Royals name Eiland pitching coach

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 25, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Former Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland is reportedly close to joining the coaching staff of the Kansas City Royals.

Jerry Crasnick reported late last night that Eiland is “close” to being named the Royals pitching coach. It was reported earlier this month that Eiland was a candidate.

After his rather bizarre departure at the end of last season — missed a significant chunk of the season to deal with a personal issue, then the Yankees announced immediately after the season that he would not be brought back — Eiland spent this season serving in an advisory role with the Rays.

On that note: Today is Yankees bullpen coach Mike Harkey’s 45th birthday.

UPDATE, 1:31 p.m.: The Royals made it official and hired Eiland as their pitching coach.

    Happy Birthday Harkey! :)

    MTU-

Buehrle’s stats last year were almost identical to Garcia’s stats from the right side. Other than Wilson and Buehrle the other FA lefty starters are Chen, Bedard, Francis, Capuano, Willis, Maholm, Davis.

I hope they go after Darvish. Montero and Darvish. Like the enthusiasm and energy they would bring to the team and fan base!

  3. yankeefeminista October 25th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Just keep Eiland as far away from Joba as possible.

  4. tucker October 25th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Can Eiland take AJ with him?

  5. tomingeorgia October 25th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Eiland was missing in action for a long time. If he had been the Red Sox pitching coach, his “personal issues” would certainly have been leaked all over the place. I never heard a peep from the Yankees or anybody connected to them about the nature of those issues. Class organization, the Yankees.

    YT-

I think Darvish might be too expensive but hey it’s not my money.

Like Blake has said, “He’s risky.”

    I agree with that too.

    ;)

  7. 86w183 October 25th, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I’m betting the Yanks do not go after Darvish, Wilson or Buerhle. It makes more sense to try and trade for a starter since they have a surplus in pitchers who are (or almost are) big league ready and catching depth throughout the organization.

Noesi, Joba, Robertson, Warren, Phelps, Brackman, Banuelos, Betances, Mitchell, Ayala and Wade coould all be dangled. Romine has great value and does Nunez. Putting together a quality 4-to-5 man package could certainly get some people’s attention.

Add to that the financial flexibility with having some serious $$$ coming off the books and you have the ability to perhaps absorb a bad contract to get the guy you want.

I definitely wouldn’t want that. If AJ were to be traded, I rather he stay far away from Eiland. Whatever Larry worked on with AJ prior to september really helped. He’s a different pitcher for the most part. No doubt, he’ll have a good year next year as I believe he’s almost there with Larry.

But if he’s traded, I still think he’ll do well, just not with Eiland. I think that would be set back & I would like to see him succeed and continue from his strong finish.

  9. Crawdaddy October 25th, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Sometimes, you have to take a risk in order to make your ballclub significantly better.

  10. blake October 25th, 2011 at 12:32 pm

So will Montgomery be moving to the bullpen now?

  11. Joe from Long Island October 25th, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Reportedly, Eppler and Oppenheimer have extensively scouted Darvish. The catch, I would think, is that however hard they scout him, he’s still playing in a league where he pitches once a week, and with a ball that is significantly different than the one used by MLB. I’m not sure how those things can be translated.

  12. blake October 25th, 2011 at 12:34 pm

Darvish is risky…..but its not the type of risk that’s going to set the organization back significantly if it doesn’t work out……so therefore…..go for it.

  13. Joe from Long Island October 25th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

I thought Mark Montgomery had been used exclusively in the bullpen.

  14. LockDown October 25th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

just to be clear…are you dumbfounded that the red sox pitchers drank bud light b/c they were drinking beer, or b/c they weren’t drinking Sam Adams?”

I was trying to say that the fact that they drank beer and ordered in chicken was more of a “shock” to me than hearing about a player calling a hit and run on his own, BUT, come to think of it, why wasn’t it Sam Adams?!!:??

    Villa,
Did you expect those three bozos to be drinking St Paulie Girl? The 7-11 by the trailer park don’t stock anything but Bud Light.

  18. tucker October 25th, 2011 at 12:40 pm

When the Yanks signed AJ, one of his biggest question marks was durability. He has not been injured during three years in pinstripes. As much as he struggled, he never faked an injury nor failed to be accountable for his at-times subpar performance. There is value in that. I’d take AJ over Lackey any day.

  19. yankeefeminista October 25th, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Joe, as per the different ball, at least Darvish is 6’5 and likely has big hands. Plus he is supposedly his own pitching guru.

  20. ac1 October 25th, 2011 at 12:42 pm

If Cashman wants one less headache with the rotation, start planning for Joba to take his spot in the rotation back as he recovers…

  21. ac1 October 25th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

    Forget Bryce Harper.
If we are going for a young OF in a trade, go for Justin Upton.

  22. Pat M. October 25th, 2011 at 12:45 pm

tucker…..You nailed it, that was the singular concern about AJ Burnett on this blog during the winter of 08-09…..I was very much hoping for him being signed as I really thought he turned the corner in 2008…….Our good pal CB even went on to say that he thought that maybe AJ could morph into what Schilling became…Lofty hopes indeed by us however he does make his spin every 5th day though for better or for worse…..

Speaking of catching, interesting how we drafted Bird for his big bat and not his D: that 1.1 Million signing bonus wasn’t because of his receiving abilities. Supposedly, though read today in PP (sub required) that he’s progressed defensively in Instructs. Good to hear. I hope we get Bird in Staten Island in 2012. He’ll be one to watch. Tejeda, another big bat, is also a work in progress. These kids sure can hit though. Our catching arsenal will soon be even more legendary. Interesting to see which catches are placed where in the minors next season.

MTU, nor mine, but we can’t be gun-shy (gutless?) because of a bad signing in Igawa who in no way compares to Darvish on any level, esp in terms of talent and age.

  32. LockDown October 25th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

okay, so what will it take to get Justin Upton

The reason I was talking Harper was as a future OF with Kemp being today.

Kemp (27) and Harper (19). So if Kemp had a 5 year (age 32, start of decline for him or whomever grandy/gardy), Harper would then be 24 and would be ready to step in. Just keeps the team young & fresh.

  33. blake October 25th, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I thought so too, but in that ESPN poll that had the AJ/Lackey swap, who would benefit, yanks, sox, neither, both… the answer was that it would benefit the yanks. So a lot of people think Lackey is better than AJ (or at least the people who answered the poll).

AJ over Lackey! Lets toss in the names of other tough contracts to trade-Johan Santana, Carlos Zambrano-Barry Zito-Derek Lowe-? Ted Lilly.

Can I throw some cold water? What says that the Johan Santana of 2012 is going to be anything like the Johan Santana of the prior decade? His older age? The greater mileage on his surgically repaired left arm? Pitching against the lineups of the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Orioles in the AL East?

If the Yanks could get him for the price of a newpaper or cup of coffee, then, sure thing, go for it. If it’s going to take actual talent, plus his sizeable contract – as we say in Brooklyn…..FUHGEDDABOUTTIT.

  56. disco stu October 25th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Like I posted previously, it has become increasingly more frustrating being a Yankee fan these days with hoping/wanting them to make an impact trade … the Yankees overvalue and protect their prospects and potential trade partners seem to hold the Yankees up for more in return because they are the Yankees and they should pay more of a premium.

Regardless, the Yankees at some point are going to have to start taking some chances and trade some of these chips away … they can’t keep all of them and I would think the longer they are held onto and kept down on the farm the greater the chance that they will lose value to other teams.

Anybody on this board ever see Ronnier Mustelier? He’s a Cuban defector, a little bit older at 27, but all indications are this guy can hit. He OPS’d over .900 at Tampa last year, and he’s hitting nearly 400 in the Arizona Fall League against MLB-ready arms. I wonder what the Yanks’ plan is for this guy. I imagine he would be a decent trade chip, or perhaps they see him replacing Nunez as a super utility guy in case Nunez is traded.

ZiPS is a 3 year regression model right? It always seems to err on the low end, especially if you didn’t have a good season. it almost never (by design) predicts bounce-back years.

It also is based on Ban/Bet in the rotation which is… probably not happening.

all kidding aside, people on the blog go overboard with thinking anyone that works for the yankees must be really good. my criticism of eiland was that he was just a generic pitching coach who rose through the ranks because he kissed up to cashman.

rothschild has some clout that goes along with his experience and seems to have a mind of his own. cashman needs coaches that speak their minds to him and go against his ideas when necessary. the pitching coach situation is much better than when eiland was there.

i wouldn’t want it to break when he was up real high, maybe just the last 20-30 feet for comedic value.

    MTU,

I don’t think Darvish needs a translator. Perhaps, he would translate well in the US.:)

Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup )…..You shooting in the 70′s ???

  93. austinmac October 25th, 2011 at 2:04 pm

    YT,

If the Rays trade Shields+/or Upton, they will get value in return. They will also add Moore full time to Price and the others. I expect the Rays to be good every year in the near future, and Friedman may get joy from being competitive at such a low cost.

randy – you’re starting to sound like GB. Careful, there’s room for only one crotchety old-timer on this board.

    Maybe Nurse Karloff should decide.

Bringing Theo into the fold… I expect the cubs to splash this offseason. Pujols or Fielder…

i’m at the fort lauderdale airport after a week of golf down here in so florida. probably a six or seven righty right now. but it’s hard to tell because i hit most of my under 100 yard shots lefty. there’s a little bit of a learning curve there, but i have great touch lefty when i get it going. i can basically just throw the ball up to the flag.

plus playing righy and lefty is great for betting. it’s not my fault they press me when i’m playing lefty and i pull out the righty two iron when i need it. hey it was in the bag. not my fault they didn’t look.

Is it true that Eiland had a drinking problem (as was speculated on in a few blogs)? Amazing that the New York media never actually reported on the real reasons behind his 25-day leave of absence and subsequent departure from the Yankees. It’s hard to keep a secret in this city.

  98. austinmac October 25th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

If their is only room for one crotchety old guy, I feel like I am being excluded. It’s discrimination I tell you. Although I must confess I cannot be nearly as crotchedly and cranky as GB. I have always suspected it is because he misses Nurse Karloff.

  99. J. Alfred Prufrock October 25th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Eiland was bad. I don’t care if he was drunk or sober – & I think it sucks to spread rumors any way, about someone’s personal life, even though I’m no fan of Eiland.

Glad to be rid of him. There was a guy on the boards who rushed in to sing his praises. He’s gone too, guess he lost his inside apple polishing gig.

    “Maybe Nurse Karloff should decide.”

    joe from long island-

i heard gb7 had a really bad dream the other night. he was pushed out of an airplane the way he used to be when he was learning to jump out of planes for a living.

the nightmare part was nurse karloff was strapped to him the way they do with new sky divers.
he looked for his knife to cut her lose but he didn’t have it. he tried gnawing through the ropes but he forgot his false teeth and could only gum the rope. like i said , it was a real nightmare .

Tin Cup…. Your post reminds me of a story that Gene Michaels used to tell about a bet that The Mick made with Murcer on the links about teeing off lefthanded…..Mantle then proceeded to drill his best drive of the day about 300 yards……This was back in the days of Persimmon woods…..You are the original tin cup…..

i ran into an old pro last year at miami shores country club and he showed me all these photos on his office walls of mantle, dimaggio, berra, etc with him in the photos . in some of them he was a little kind and eventually in his twenties. it turns out that’s where the yankees used to play their spring training golf in the old days. he was their caddy as a kind and theor club pro when he got older.

he told me mantle could just absolutely kill the ball, like 375 yards kind of long, but he said bill martin was the most competitive guy and had the worst temper he’s ever seen with a golfer. seems he used to throw a lot of clubs.

  105. Pat M. October 25th, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Randy…..GB tells us that Nurse Karloff is your personal caddie when you’re in Florida……Now somewhere in there lies the truth….

Enter Sandman on the PA system as a struggling David Phelps warms in the bullpen preparing for this afternoon’s start. Doesn’t seem right.

Media: “Do you have a Carmine?”

Cherington: “”The only mistake we had with this press conference is not having a seat for Carmine.”

Sense of humor is important for Sox GM..
