Report: Eppler going for second Angels interview
According to Jon Heyman, Yankees director of pro scouting Billy Eppler has been called for a second interview for the Angels GM opening. Amateur scouting director Damon Oppenheimer was not called back.
Eppler spent today in Tampa going through the Yankees organizational meetings. He declined to comment when The Associated Press asked about the Angels job.
The Angels are still going through some first-round interviews, and reports indicate that the Rays Andrew Friedman is their top choice, but it’s unclear whether he’s legitimately willing to leave Tampa Bay.
Neither Eppler nor Oppenheimer has been closely connected to the Orioles GM search, but that interview process is on-going.

I think the phillies would be looking to replace Oswalt’s spot in the rotation, so I doubt they’d give up hamels. Oswalt was to get 16m, the buy out is 2m, leaving 14m extra. With Yanks paying half of AJ, that just under 6m left over from the 14m.
And that could be the trade right there. Phillies get AJ, yanks pay half… As you’re just looking to move AJ and some salary dump
If they want offense too, Jorge Vazquez is cheap…. and if they’re willing to spend on swisher, then add him for a couple of prospects.
If they’re willing to trade Dominic, then use him to trade for Kemp (plus extension)

Maybe, for me it’s not really the eating the money part- it’s are going to get anything worthwhile in return? I just don’t see it.
His stuff is still good enough to succeed. Salary off the books, is just not that critical to the Yankees, especially in this weak FA market. Starting pitching is way more important than salary off the books.
Having a spring training and off season with Larry R can not be understated. I see a bounce back year for him. Anyway just my take.
AJ’s ERAs the past two years are 5.26 and 5.15. If the Yanks were looking for a pitcher would anyone here want to pay $8.25 mil x 2 for him? I didn’t think so. So why would any other team?
Prufrock likes the sound of that
“Maybe, for me it’s not really the eating the money part- it’s are going to get anything worthwhile in return? I just don’t see it.”
The money off the books is the return.
If the Yankees had an infinite budget then fine….ride it out…but thy don’t and he’s blocking younger guys like Noesi and Warren etc from getting a shot.
Id love to believe that AJ is going to all of the sudden figure out how to repeat his delivery and become a good pitcher…..but at 34 I think the odds are stacked against that…..his stuff is diminishing and I honestly think there is a defend chance he will get worse….not better. If he loses another 1-2 mph he’s toast. Pessimistic view I know…..but he’s been one of the 10 worst starters in baseball the last 2 seasons.
I really don’t think the Phillies would consider dealing Hamels unless they are really given a strong offer from a team. Their strength is their starting pitching and they are in a win now mode due to an aging roster. I just don’t see them dealing him unless for some reason they are struggling in July.

Odds, you bet! It’s a way to wipe the slate clean of the two most ardent voices for moving that kid out of the rotation.
The Yanks can say there was an unexpected return of velo, they can say after TJ he’s rededicated himself, the new guy was able to find something with him and thinks he can make another stab at the rotation, blah, blah, blah.

Yankees Aim To Sign Sabathia Before Opt-Out Date
By Tim Dierkes [October 26 at 9:07pm CST]
9:07pm: The Yankees are “close to completing” a new offer for Sabathia, according to David Waldstein of the New York Times.
great news
not surprised. yanks will have a doubleheader announcement, before the end of the month, for both cash and cc. everything else flows from that.
Full NY Times article. Waldstein says CC can opt out 5 days after end WS.-believe it’s 3 days while FA’s have 5 days to negotiate with their current teams before declaring free agency.

Pete makes it sound so easy!
“The Red Sox could probably pluck a No. 4 type off the market. But their best bet might be making a trade.
In Kevin Youkilis, Josh Reddick, Lars Anderson and Jed Lowrie, the Red Sox have four players in their roster who could return a pitcher depending on how they’re packaged.
Their prospect list includes Will Middlebrooks, Bryce Brentz, Ryan Kalish, Xander Bogaerts, Jose Iglesias and Brandon Jacobs. Middlebrooks and Kalish are close to being major league ready while Brentz, Bogaert, Iglesias and Jacobs have significant potential.
Could a package of Youkilis, Reddick and Bogaerts bring back a starter from the Giants or Athletics? Both teams in the Bay Area badly need offense.
Ben Cherington has a good relationship with future Padres GM Josh Byrnes. Maybe there’s a deal to be made there.”
Yooooouuuuukkkkk!!!
They can’t trade him. He’s like a god or something.
I told you a while ago that CC would be back in pinstripes so to forget all the turmoil, did I not?
I also told you the Sux were going to keep Scutaro (I gleaned that from Cherington’s press conference, so I’m not claiming clairvoyance here. But I am willing to believe that Cherington isn’t putting out any red herrings at this point, so if he says they want Scutaro back, you can believe they do and they will get him.)
I am now telling you that AJ Burnett will NOT be traded and will be a member of next year’s starting rotation, so you might as well get used to it.
I’m actually not claiming claivoyance with any of this as much as I know I have the ability to read the obvious since my emotions aren’t tied up into it. It isn’t rocket science to figure out that the Yankees have no intention of giving up CC, nor does CC have any desire to go elsewhere.
I believe it’s also pretty easy to read the Yankee organization since they’re pretty transparent and are not given to blowing smoke. They still believe in AJ, and his postseason performance definitely enhanced that position.
Now there is a definite co*kiness and smugness to my tone, no question about it. I’m also smart enough to realize that any slip-up leaves me totally open to derision.
But I’m more than willing to take that chance.
“We need to add some pitching depth,” Cherington said. “We’ll do that through some good, creative, perhaps buy-low acquisitions. We’re going to do our diligence on every available player. But I think we need to hit on some pitchers this offseason much the way we did with Alfredo Aceves last offseason. We need to continue to do that.”
I think you can forget the Sux going after Oswalt (unless you consider him a buy-low acquisition) or any other big name pitcher. Read what the man said.
Remember, two huge names at huge bucks did nothing for them. Cherington probably has the equivalent of a honeymoon season coming up and he can easily claim rebuilding if things looks like they aren’t going to work out.
He also said they are counting on Lester, Beckett, and Bucholz for the top of their rotation. They saw what the Yankees did with Colon and Garcia – only won the AL East.
And for the record, I am still in AJ’s camp. Won’t move from it. I still believe in him.
It’s just an offer, don’t get too excited.
But I don’t see why they need to even make an offer now, he’s under contract. Unless his agent has already told them he is opting out if he doesn’t get a new offer.
trish,
The Yanks blow smoke all the time. I believe they’ll sign CC, but how about his last signing, and Teix, too. Mildly interested in Darvish? We’ll see. Love, and mostly share, your enthusiasm, though.

Deep fried bacon??? Where can I get that?
It sure did sound like Cherubting was going to go after players like garcia & colon or whomever. Funny, they were hailed for getting crawford & a-gon and now I can see them trying to avoid a big splash. What a difference a historic collapse makes.
“What a difference a historic collapse makes.”
Absofreakin’lutely, Lock.
HISTORIC COLLAPSE!!!! The damned gift that just keeps on giving and giving and giving!
I agree that they are going to avoid making any kind of big splash. They are in a totally precarious position and the fans are not trusting the product at all. They are resenting Theo and the ownership for getting Lackey, Crawford – and if they aren’t plissed about Agon, they certainly don’t think he lived up to his billing. I think they know that a big splash would be met with derision and just seen as a smokescreen to hide the crumbling foundation. Cherington talked about buy-low acquisitions for a reason.
Buy-lows give them plausible deniability in that if they don’t work out, they can always fall back on rebuiliding from the collapse and wanting to be sure of where they put their money since recent “high price acquisitions” didn’t work out the way they thought they would, so they are being cautious as they build back up.

How sweet that the Red Sox won that 90th game but not a 91st!
I don’think much of Sherman’s writing ability or that it’s worth reading, but this is Cashman’s opinion of Montero’s catching ability.
”
The Yankees, internally, think Montero is better defensively than Napoli, which hardly is universal. In fact, two general managers told me this week Montero cannot catch in the majors. Period. But there are those outside the Yankees who remember he still is just 21, has improved annually and has a powerful arm. Yankees officials were impressed late in the year with how much he wants to improve.
“Anyone who says he can’t catch is wrong,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. “We believe this guy can catch.”
The Yankees manager, however, is Joe Girardi, like Scioscia a former catcher who sees the position mainly through a defensive prism. The switch away from Posada to Russell Martin mainly was about this. But the Yankees have thrived both ways — going from an offensive catcher in Mike Stanley to win championships with Girardi, and transitioning from Girardi to win championships with Posada.
Yankees officials think Montero can be at least as good a defender as Posada, a level of adequacy that plays well if you are going to be an offensive star. And Montero’s late-season cameo did nothing to dim those hitting comparisons to Miguel Cabrera.
Which would make Jesus Montero a higher-evolved version of Mike Napoli. You think the Yankees could use one of those?”
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports.....um=twitter
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
If push comes to shove between Cashman and Girardi, Girardi’s going to lose.
I’m glad the Yankees are prepared with an offer for CC. Perhaps they can circumvent the opt-out.
As for Montero, I had always assumed that his first year in the majors would be a break-in year, with p/t catching duties. Martin is a good catcher to have back there while Montero continues to learn his craft.
If nothing else, Scott Boras is good for a laugh.

If Cano is wanting to avoid free agency …..then the Yankees aren’t at least listening because…….
GB7 -
Just what we all need – some MORE drama. Cano will get his payday. I guess Boras is just “doing his job.” He did not negotiate the contract that Cano is playing under.
I know we’ve been assured that CC will not opt out, but the thing is definitely that 7th or 8th year. CC is still young, so age-wise it’s not like he’s looking for a contract that will take him into his 40s. But you do have to be concerned about his physicality. Anyway, he seems to like it here, you KNOW the Yankees both like him and need him, so I am basically hopeful that something will be worked out that is mutually satisfying. (And while CC likes it here, CC would fit in ANYWHERE, because of the person he is. Except maybe Boston…)
The question is, IS there a team that has the money and flexibility to go farther than the Yankees would go?
blake -
Is that how you read it, that Cano wants to avoid FA? That doesn’t sound like a Boras thing.
But I admit, I get, maybe not bored, and not confused, but tangled up a bit, when they talk about options and contracts and guarantees and whatever! LOL
Sherman never lets the truth stop a good story, does he?
“The Yankees manager, however, is Joe Girardi, like Scioscia a former catcher who sees the position mainly through a defensive prism. The switch away from Posada to Russell Martin mainly was about this. But the Yankees have thrived both ways — going from an offensive catcher in Mike Stanley to win championships with Girardi, and transitioning from Girardi to win championships with Posada.”
Is he suggesting that Girardi brought Martin in? Seems unlikely to me, that was Cashman’s move. Posada was moved to the DH spot because his catching his had definitely diminished AND he couldn’t stay healthy. The team was trying to keep him healthy and get the most out of his bat.
Sherman writes like a paranoid schizophrenic.
Villa,
Yea I mean it sounds like he wants a new deal…….and if I can negotiate it now without competition then why not at least see. Offer him 6/100 and see what he says……..you don’t have to do it. The Yankees want to wait to years to be sure he doesn’t get injured etc…..but by doing that they coukd be costing themselves millions of dollars.
If Cano is wanting to avoid free agency …..then the Yankees aren’t at least listening because…….

Good morning GB,Villa and Blake-
Just was finishing the post article on Soriano. Boras says he likes his new role, wants to remain with Rivera! I wonder if Cashman will get some more control over transactions in his new contract.
So Cashman hasn’t returned Boras’ call about reworking Cano’s contract. That article mentioned they will because Boras represents Carlos Beltran.
Sounds more like he’s suggesting that Girardi didn’t like Jorges defense and lobbied to get a better defender.
Trader,
He’s I know they have to get CC done first …….just be willing to talk with Robbie though is all Im saying

———-
Or maybe after an injury filled year with a 39 year old catcher whose contract is ending, the organization thought it was wise to bring in another catcher to be safe. Weren’t they giving themselves options when they signed Martin? Wasn’t that the whole story?
But that’s not as dramatic as the Girardi vs Posada angle, is it?
Good morning RadioKev and anyone else who logs on while I’m slowly typing.
Villa-
We discussed this before about other teams out there offering Sabathia a 7 year megadeal.
Don’t see any west coast team either spending the money or having the need for CC. For instance the Angels have pitching and need to focus on offense.
Tigers, Nationals, and maybe the Rangers might go there. Any others?
Yankee Trader may be right. So, they haven’t called Boras about Cano yet – they do have more pressing matters to settle first. Cano is not, right now, a priority. Blake – ahh, okay. It could work to the Yankees’ benefit to “extend” him now, I guess. But I think Boras wants Cano to get that money NOW, and the Yankees have been working with a budget that figures in Cano at the cost they agreed to a few years ago.
Between a rock and a hard place. Where the Yankees live in the contract world.
I prefer writers who at least attempt to respect some journalism/sports journalism ideals.
Yankee Trader -
What about the Cubs?
Good morning Yankee Trader
Blake-
I just finished your sentence because one good C[Cano] deserves anotherC[Cashman] and another CC. I was trying to get the C’s all in a row. Dumb huh?
Radiokev,
Sure…..but organizationally the Yanks decided not to catch Posada anymore…..there have been numerous theories why. I think the point of the article was more to suggest Montero should be given every chance to catch.
And Good morning all
Cubs might spend their money trying to resign Aramis Ramirez, and/or Cecil Fielder and will be out there on Albert Pujols if not Fielder.
Yea I know Cano isn’t a priority right now……id just tell Borat that if he wants to.talk about it later on like in Jan or February then we will listen and see what they have in mind.
Dibble pitching a fit because they called the game last night………he does this guy have a job? I really don’t get it.
How
blake -
Dibble is the most obnoxious guy on MLB, in my mind. That’s probably why he’s there. You need at least one of those “types.” LOL
I wasn’t a fly on the wall at the meeting in Tampa yesterday but it sounds like the 2nd order of business after Cashman signs his new contract and CC’s contract is reworked will be:
Picking up Swisher’s option-he might be shopped
Offering Garcia arbitration, with a handshake if he wants more than 1 year that he’ll decline so the Yankees get the draft pick.
Yankee Trader -
True. They have other fish to fry. But if CC is out there, how does any team with money not get into the mix? His competition in FA is Wilson and who?
Even the guys on MLB yesterday were saying that Wilson is going to get an AJ-type contract and the Rangers and other teams don’t think he’s worth it, because for most teams, he’s not a top of the rotation guy.
CC is an ace, and would be the only ace on the market. So I do believe if he opts out, there will be teams (maybe that we haven’t thought about) that will be willing make room (and exception) for him.
Villa,
I can handle obnoxious……its the uninformed moron part that’s rough.
re: Burnett
It’s not his contract or under .500 record as a Yankee that’s bothersome nor is it a surprise that he’ll trend downward with his volocity and doesn’t respond with repeating his mechanics resulting in implosion anytime after the 4th inning or sooner.
The bigger immediate concern is that he’ll be taking up a starting rotation spot for 2 more years with good young arms on the cusp of readiness for the big leagues.
Any trade or free agent signing considered for 2012 or 2013 doesn’t get done until first considering what to do with Burnett. A six-man rotation is not the answer. Holding back talent isn’t the answer either.
“I called Cash to ask about dropping the options and he hasn’t returned the call,” Boras told The Post.
Boras didn’t say avoid free agency or say anything about an extension. Dropping the options means paying Robbie $2 million dollars to become a free agent.
Cash’s response can be “no, but we can discuss an extension” but do players hire Boras the king of free agency to negotiate extensions and avoid free agency?
Sure Blake, and I’ve always agreed with that. Montero should be given every chance to be the every day catcher, not giving him that chance wastes a WAR advantage.
good morning all
Kevin
I totally agree w/ your 7:16 post. It is getting tired, this constant Girardi doesn’t like Po, Girardi doesn’t like Montero blah blah blah.
Cardinals have a chance. Garcia on 6 days rest has been very good. LaRussa has all but said he will not use Carpenter tonight and risk injury. Carpenter will pitch if there’s a game 7, but Lohse will probably start. Maybe there will be another rainout for game 7 and we’ll see Carpenter start and Dibble fume.
Villa-
If the Yankees offer 150M guaranteed for 6 years, a lot of those teams that were interested are out. Only the teams offering the 7th year might hold interest.
Pat,
Its pretty obvious the yanks aren’t going to give away those options unless they get a pretty fair extension……so by wanting to talk Im assuming that’s what they mean…..to buy out the options and do a longer deal. If I we’re the Yanks I would at least see what they we’re thinking and at some point this winter id guess they will.
Personally I think their “no extensions until the contract is over stance” is outdated for how they are dunning things these days……..
Boras must have called George King of the NY Post yesterday, and after telling him Soriano wasn’t opting out, that he would be seeking a new contract for Cano. Both articles were written by King.
From the article:
Even when Cashman gets back to Boras, and he will because Boras represents free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran, Boras shouldn’t expect Cashman to void the option years on Cano.
At $29 million for the next two years, Cano is the best bargain in baseball
King trying to fuel the rumor mill. Yankees with interest in Beltran?
“Even when Cashman gets back to Boras, and he will because Boras represents free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran, Boras shouldn’t expect Cashman to void the option years on Cano.”
I don’t think Boras would even bother asking that.
CC is an ace, and would be the only ace on the market. So I do believe if he opts out, there will be teams (maybe that we haven’t thought about) that will be willing make room (and exception) for him.
____________________________________________________________________________
It’s like TV’s storage wars, I can’t say teams don’t want CC, but several would be happy to just see the Yanks get bid up so that the Yanks have less cash to dole around later. Hope baseball is over soon. If the Yanks are agressive we should see some moves pretty quick. If you had a 6 1/2 hour meeting to just field the same team again they must have taken alot of no doze and drank lots of coffee.
Im sure Cashman will talk to Borat this winter about various things……he should about Beltran as well
I’ve read on here the theory that Giradi prefers a defensive catcher.
Will someone explain that thought with some facts, not just a reason to defend their belief that Montero should be the catcher.
It has been reported that Cash has wanted Martin for some time. So that puts a twist to the idea that it’s Joe that prefers Martin.
I think they felt they needed a catcher to fill the gap till Montero or one of the others are ready.Martin fills that role.
Montero is just 21. Give him time to develop his skills before you decide the Yankees prefer someone else do the catching.
Phil and Joba were brought up to early according too some but now their being to patient with Montero, who by the way is only 21.
Can Montero hit? Yes. Is that all he needs to do to be on the big club? No.
I almost look at the Swisher situation as a bellweather. If they quickly pickup the option then it just says to me they are happy with the status quo. Given smiling Nick is back I wouldn’t expect many changes. George until he lost it was always in the market for the big free agents. Some worked out well some not so well, but it was the style that the club moved forward with. It would be quite a shift in philosophy if the Yanks aren’t players in some of the real big names that maybe out there.
I think they need to cut Jorge loose quickly and move on. We need a effective DH next year, either Jesus or someone else.
Im sure Cashman will talk to Borat this winter about various things.

I’m sure he will talk to several people and several people will talk to him. Don’t think much of it will come out of it though. I think Brian is locked into his current philosphy, chances are the team rewards him handsomly for the failures in the playoffs the last two years.
Picking up Swishers option is an easy decision…..they should just go ahead and do it. That doesn’t guarantee he will be will the club next year though….if they opt to replace him then he has trade value…….and you can’t trade him if you’ve made him a FA

He doesn’t seem to want to make the decision that it’s over. Good chance he plays somewhere else next year. I think if he decides he wants to retire the Yanks would accomodate him in a position that would suit him.
With the exception of Thurman Munson and Bill Dickey, the Yankees have never had a first string catcher that wasn’t in their mid-20s. Even Berra was 23 and he only caught half of the games in 1948. Very few catchers get the front line job that are under 23-24. Bench, Mauer and Rodriguez being the exceptions. Posey was 23. At age 23 or 24, Montero will be right on target for the position.

Good Morning.
Things finally cooling down in your neck of the woods?
I’ve been meaning to tell you I passed a hat to help with your renovations, but the hat didn’t come back. Maybe it was because it was a Yankee hat here in RS Nation.
:
I think if some here are willing to be patient they will be pleased with the talent the Yankees are developing.
“Curious why it’s so easy.”
Because he’s by far their best option for RF currently and as I said even if you want to sign for or trade for someone to replace him…..he has trade value and you’re much better off trading him than declining his option and letting him walk for nothing. You decline his option then you’re put in a bind of either having to give the position to an inferior player …..or having to overpay to replace him via free agency or trade.
I’m not so sure picking up Swisher’s option is an easy decision. He’s not going to have much trade value at $ 10 M salary an impending free agency.
AJ stays unless they can find a partner for a comparable contract. Somewhat similar $$ exist in contracts of Jason Bay and Alex Rios for example. Don’t see either of those deals happening.
GB-
Good post. I wonder when Montero is no longer the 1st string catcher if he’ll move out to LF like Yogi did. However after I wrote that and went back to Yogi’s stats, he played the OF quite a bit, even when he came up to the Yankees. I never knew that.
GB7
If you read some of the comments on your “buddies ” blog you’d think Chip and Bret were there with the trade proposals I’ve seen there.
To me its more about Montero’s readiness than his age…..he signed very young and has been in pro ball for a long time….. they will ease him in next year and see how he does I think
“I’m not so sure picking up Swisher’s option is an easy decision. He’s not going to have much trade value at $ 10 M salary an impending free agency.”
I disagree. I can think of several teams that would love to pay him 10 million for one year and then take the 2 picks when he leaves……
Also….if you decline his option….who replaces him? Dickerson? Golson? If not them then you’ve lost leverage in dealing with Beltran or via trades because teams know you need somebody.
86w183-
I think AJ stays for another year.
Swisher could still have trade value for teams looking for a 1B/OF’er on a one year contract until the FA pool of 2013 comes out–Kemp?
Montero can’t play outfield…..especially not LF at YS.
AJ cannot be traded unless another 180 plus inning guy is acquired to replace him. Even if such a pitcher is obtained, his innings are still likely needed. Noesi is a possibility, but only a possibility.the Yankees don’t want to excessively rely on him.
I think its possible that Cashman could find a trade for AJ if he’s willing to eat enough salary to make the aquiring team comfortable…….whether they’ll be willing to do that or not I have no idea.

No donations, huh? I expected at least to get the hat size tag that I could use to help patch the roof.
The stockpile of pitching and catching in the system is amazing. They are building a nice stable of outfielders at the lower levels, too. Middle infield is thin, but, 3rd base is looking pretty good.
Austinmac,
I really have a feeling they are going to add a pitcher this winter…..they’ve been trying for 2 years and they don’t have Cliff Lee hanging over the whole process this time.
More than anyone else, we have been hearing about Montero forever, so it seems like a very long wait. We were hearing about him back when Rebecca still posted here, so it has been awhile. He was one of her favorites.
I agree Blake, I think he is BUC next year, they evaluate and then they decide how to best use him the following year.
I still think AJ will be part of the ’12 team. If they do plan on trading him, it’ll probably be next winter. That being said, I’m sure we’ll hear rumors this year that Cashman is trying to move him, but I’ll be really surprised if it happens.

If you read some of the comments on your “buddies ” blog you’d think Chip and Bret were there with the trade proposals I’ve seen there.

yeah, I wish the Yanks could trade a couple of utility players for a font like starting pitcher like Boston can.
well Blake, I think a Maxwell/Dickerson platoon in RF would give the Yanks MUCH more speed,MUCH better defense without a dramatic reduction in offense.
Please identify the teams that might love the idea of paying Swish $ 10 M for one year and what the Yanks might be able to get from them? The Phillies might make some sense with Howard likely to miss 2012. Dominc Brown and an arm?
***front*** line pitcher
MLBTR’s has an update on SF Giants.
Their pitching is getting expensive. Matt Cain gets 15M this year and if they want to extend him they are looking at a big outlay.
List of some of the arb-eligible pitchers and their salaries[projected]
Arbitration Eligible Players (estimated salaries)
•Tim Lincecum, SP: $19.2MM
•Jonathan Sanchez, SP: $5.2MM
•Pablo Sandoval, 3B: $3.2MM
•Jeff Keppinger, 2B: $2.7MM
•Andres Torres, CF: $2.5MM (non-tender candidate)
•Ryan Vogelsong, SP: $2.5MM
•Ramon Ramirez, RP: $2.3MM
•Santiago Casilla, RP: $1.9MM
•Sergio Romo, RP: $1.3MM
To finish that’s a list of some arb eligible pitchers and position players.
The Giants may have some interest in moving Sanchez and Keppinger. Could you see Swisher traded to the Giants for pitching after a replacement in RF is obtained?
New Post: Draft slotting system still being debated
I think a Maxwell/Dickerson outfield would provide good defense and abysmal offense. Cost savings at the expense of wins.

for sure would knock on the door of the Giants…they could use some hitters & Yankees could use some SPing…
Swisher does have power that Maxwell/Dickerson wouldn’t replace.
I know Swisher hasn’t been the player we’d hoped he be in the playoffs, but you don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. He’s not the awful player that is being presented here lately.
Kate,
the first time I saw Montero when he played in the GCL in ’07 for a couple of games, but watched him in Charleston and Savannah in ’08. That bat was special even then, The defense was brutal, but it was all mechanics. I watched him hit 2 homers through the trees (both 45-470 feet to left center) at Grayson Stadium in Savannah. They ended up in the road. The old guy that I talked to often, said that the only time he had seen a player do that was Mantle in ’57 when the yanks played the dodgers on the way north after ST.
No one called him a terrible player… I certainly didn’t.
I also don’t think he’s worth $ 10 M a year.
