Tonight’s World Series game postponed
Major League Baseball just sent this announcement…
Game Six of the 2011 World Series between the Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis has been postponed due to inclement weather and the forecast for rainfall throughout the remainder of the day. Given the desire to play a game of this magnitude without interruption, and an outlook with better conditions over the next two nights, Major League Baseball, along with the Cardinals and the Rangers, determined that making the decision early would be the most prudent course of action to allow fans enough time to plan accordingly.
Game Six of the World Series has been rescheduled for Thursday at 8:05 p.m. (ET)/7:05 p.m. (CT) and will be televised by FOX Sports. Game Seven, if necessary, will be played on Friday at 8:05 p.m. (ET)/7:05 p.m. (CT).

Rain has not been kind to baseball this year.
“I think we all wanted Alex and to a lesser degree Tex substituted at some point…”
Foul for projecting.
Posting on this forum is like playing that game “secret”

luis, I read it and gave you props on the blog for scooping Chad & everyone else .
Have you gotten to any games? I’m already going through withdrawal!

Not yet, i`ll wait for the season to really get underway which is about Nov 10th, when most of the good players that are allowed to play down here start getting in to the games. Besides the last three months of the year is when i really have to work long hours!!

mel, not a question that they needed the beantown maurauders in order to get as far as they did. But the fact that they lose their best players to free agency and still end up somewhere in the hunt is a huge tribute to the way they manage what they have.

“With a 200 million dollar team, these guys are supposed to do their jobs. A whole different situation, I guess, which keeps Girardi between the lines with conventional thinking.”
And therein lies the conundrum, and a real one for Girardi, I’m sure. Do you take out one of your regulars that has gotten the job done for you all season and replace him with a pinch hitter or do you take the chance that he is going to come through even though he hasn’t been hitting. You know the old saying, slumps don’t last forever. Do you use one of your best relievers in a situation where you may be saving him for the next game because you’re not sure your next-day starter is going to give you long innings, or do you bring him in immediately, a la the screams of lohud?
One thing that Chad said, and I definitely agree with his take: Girardi always has a thought-out reason for making the moves he does. He doesn’t fly by the seat of his pants.

I guess Game 1 of the ALDS doesn’t have quite the panache as Game 6 of the World Series.
I don’t know my Clue characters too well, but I guess I’ll take Professlr Plum over Gloppy.
At least it wasn’t passive-aggressive projecting.

Hi Trish!,
very good post…..But in fairness, most of the critics where complaining about not pinch hitting for Martin, who didn`t hit at all in the regular season, except maybe for two or three weeks in April

Dont know if I want to give GB uhmm Col Mustard a revolver or a leadpipe. Gb would probably enjoy the leadpipe a bit more.
The rain delay could be a boon for the Cardinals? 1 extra day to practice calling the bullpen and Chris Carpenter could pitch in a game 7?
m,
I hope that you are right……i would hate the Rangers as WS champions
I did not want Alex or Tex PH hit for, or Martin…Swish, maybe, as he was swinging for the fences instead of his usual game plan.
It is harder to pull veterans out of a line up than young players Girardi is not the only manager to do so. Just to name a few: Wash stuck w/ Michael Young when he was hitting oh about .180. TLR didn’t PH for Holliday and he was a main culprit for men LOB.
You expect your veterans to come thru.
Carpenter pitched very poorly earlier in the playoffs on three days rest, didn’t he?
Embarrassed to say I don’t know any of the characters.
Hi Luis!!!
I do remember Martin getting some very nice hits during the season. But putting that aside, pinch hitting for Martin also meant losing him in the catcher position. Girardi may not have been comfortable putting one of the kids into that position in the postseason, especially where you might have had Austin Jackson or someone else like him running the bases. Maybe with Cervelli as backup he might have done it? (I certainly don’t know if he would have.)
Again, I think it highlights the difficulty of someone managing a team like the Yankees as opposed to managing a team, well, not like the Yankees.
kate-
Let’s see…who should you be- Ms. White?
Bad break for MLB… now a game 7 will be buried on Friday, the 2nd worst TV night of the year.
kate,
I think the roles are more clearly defined for the Yankees than for any other team.
Totally off-topic, but is it my understanding that the Big East is down to 5 football schools? Did you guys see Auriema go off about how Notre Dame ruined the Big East by refusing to become a football member years ago?
“You expect your veterans to come thru.”
I think that is the point. And as happened with Michael Young, sometimes they do!
Nick, something makes me think you might want to poke around some mailboxes today…
Just a shame that baseball is being played to late in the month.
Inclement weather happens this time of year Bud, get with the program already.
Bud deserves all the blame.

Ah, gotcha. I envy you in November. Give us some highlights

Who is guilty of passive-aggressive projecting to warrant the mad face?????
Trisha, I made a blunder far worse than any made by Manager Girardi this year: I discovered the mind-blowing Cornflake w/White Chocolate Ritter Sport variety just yesterday, too late to be included in my wager winnings.
My point about Alex (not Tex) is that it would have been justifiable. He clearly was not “back” from his injuries.
But he gets paid to be the man, so I can understand why they played him the whole way through.
I think we were all wishing he’d have one of those magical postseason moments.

Just a joke.
Pirate Gerrit Cole made his pro debut last night and hit 100-101 several times……..He’s going to be a beast in a few years….
Nick – just saw your post. I think that you will still be pretty happy despite not mentioning the cornflakes with white chocolate (I don’t think I saw them on any of the sites, but since I wasn’t looking for them, I can’t be sure.)

As an aside, I am a chocoholic but I cannot stand white chocolate. It closes my throat or something. (there were posters here in the past who at this point would be recommending that I eat white chocolate nonstop!)
It’s an import-only variety, I saw it yesterday at a shop downtown that carries ones brought in from Germany.
It’s the Sorte Des Jahres!

JAP,
Count on it!!
Trisha,
I do understand you logic, but Detroit wasn`t a particular fast team, aside from Jackson, there was no stealing threat in their lineup. But your point about trusting your vets is spot on, and in the end it was only a hit that separated us from advancing further in to the PS.
You and Kate make a very compelling case about the difference in managing a Rays team where you can take risks, and managing the Yankees where the players are payed handsomely to their jobs.
I don’t want to hear from Gerrit Cole
trisha,

But Teix hasn’t been getting the job done against right handers all year. So moving Posada up in the 5th spot should have been an easy move.
Also, I do believe that given time, A-rod would have gotten his timing up. But let’s not forget that A-rod had been out for most of the last half of the year & so didn’t exactly get them to the playoffs.
What kind of contract would Gerrit Cole get if he was available as a free agent right now, all else being equal?
And what if you could only negotiate with him if you had to bid in a closed auction first?
For the sake of argument, let’s say that the amount you bid wouldn’t count against your team’s payroll for luxury tax purposes.
Going to go and pick up some Halloween candy while it’s still on sale (5 bags for $10, not bad).
Was looking forward to baseball tonight.
Oh well.
Later y’all.
I wish MLB had cared enough about the Yankees/Tigers games to pre-emptively call their Game 1, knowing there was rain in the forecast and knowing the game might have to be stopped and re-started.
I wish the umpires had cared enough about the Yankees/Tigers games to have a rain delay in the 7th inning when Jeter was up with rain pouring down his face, or in the 9th inning when the same was true for Cano.
I guess those games served as the “learning curve.”
Correction, it wasn’t Cole’s debut but rather his first win……Nick in SF, I’ll take Cole just like I’d rather have Stratsburg
“Can’t get too much worse for them-this is already one of the lowest rated WS, isn’t it?”
Yup. Now, a game 6 and possibly 7 will probably spare them that distinction (game 6 and 7 usually bump up overall series ratings considerably)… it will still certainly be a top 3 lowest rated WS though, even with the ratings bump they will get from tomorrow night’s game and a potential game 7.
Have to go guys, good to see you all
and they claim the Yankees are bad for baseball…at least when the Yankees play, people watch the games
trisha – I would say that Maddon is able to manage the way he does because of the situation he is in. A low-payroll team with no ego’s, a small market team with no fanbase and no expectations… When he makes a bad decision it gets swept under the rug, when he makes a good one it gets trumpeted like he is some form of genius. Girardi has a lot more as stake and a lot more to deal with to make decisions on a whim because they “might” work out.
DocGooden16 Bringing @CC_Sabathia back is a NO brainer..it will get done. There is nobody out there who gives u wat he does on & off the field.Classy guy
ID -
I wouldn’t say Maddon’s got not egos; I’d say he doesn’t have to worry about massaging any egos he might have.
But, I have to say that once Girardi made the decision to switch Cano and Teixeira, it did not sound like Teixeira had any problem with it. A few of the players have stated on occasion that whatever “skip” wants they’ll do.
I think Girardi builds a lineup based on the “bones” – his veterans – and keeps them in place for stability, but moves the other pieces around. Also, I notice Girardi is more open to change at the start of a season. His philosophy (and it goes for the bullpen as well) seems to center around the idea that players like to know their roles and he doesn’t like to tinker with that. Most of the time it has paid off (I guess, since the Yankees managed to somehow win the most games in the AL).
I’m not saying for certain there are no Yankees players with egos who won’t do whatever, but they’re not really asked to.
“Nick in SF, I’ll take Cole just like I’d rather have Stratsburg”
Great, how can we get them?
OldHossRadbourn Things not heard in my day: “It might rain. We should not proceed.”
JAP got his ALCS refund today so doesn’t that mean the micro-managing of the 2011 season is officially over?

pat-very cool, thanks for the link.
After your profound comments last night I’ll leave that up to you……My point was to be taken as a generalization comparison, not literally …….I’m looking at The Seahawks at home vs. Cinn getting 2.5…..Besides SJ is covering the game and I usually have good success playing the games he covers….Although Cal vs. The Ducks a few weeks ago didn’t work out down the stretch….You see anything good…..
Erin
My son came home from school and said he watched a college football game on ESPN last night and there were about 100 people in the stands and Alex was one of them.
One of the broadcasters was former Giants QB Danny Kannell and he was talking about how he played baseball and football against Alex in HS and how he was a great QB.
I googled to see if there was anything about it and that Dolphins interview is what I found.
Unfortunately I continue to have a terrible feeling that I’m going to have too root for CJ Wilson next year.
With his price supposedly going down with his playoff performance and the Yankees continuing to reiterate they don’t view him highly this has a stealth Cashman swoop in written all over it.
If I recall, there was a pass to end the Cal-Oregon game that was dropped in the end zone but, had it been caught, would have given Cal the cover. A sad day all around with Game Five on the other channel… ugh…
As for Cole and Strasburg, that’s the crux of the issue with Darvish. The Yankees, as currently constructed, don’t usually get to draft such players. Cole fell to us the first time ‘cos no one thought he could be signed. Otherwise, we can draft potential stars who might fall to us for that reason, injury fears (Joba), and by going over slot, but now other teams are doing that and the next CBA might take that away. Or not.
Throwing our financial weight around with IFAs and , in Darvish’s case, by bidding high if he’s posted, is a way for the NYY to compensate for drafting so low every year.
Or we could go through the 80′s and early 90′s again and still luck out that other teams passed up on Derek Jeter.
This doesn’t mean that we must get Darvish just because we can’t get a Cole or a Strasburg. As we discussed last night, the NYY might run all the numbers and gameplan the scenarios and decide he’s not worth the freight. But Cole and Strasburg and Bryce Harper were not available to us as draftees.
I’d be happy with Cole too, but he’s off the table.

Yankees 2-day organizational meetings ended up lasting a day. 6 1/2 hours today; NY-based apparently hierarchy headed back to NY.

A 2-day meeting lasting 6-1/2 hours?
That means either everyone was totally in agreement on everything, or they met up with a few snags????
Or there is an emergency in NY that needs attention.
I’m not going to last through the “hot stove” season. Need to go somewhere where there is no baseball news. LOL
Nick,
Yup
Back to CC for a moment
.. and his contract.
I think it’s clear the Yankees should “give” him 1 or 2 more years, maybe 3,
and a couple million more per year.
BUT… and it’s a big BUTT,
They should get something in return!!
They should get some protection in the out years.
Specifically, I see 3 or 4 things in the extra years:
1. a base salary level equal to current salary, or perhaps starting 1 or 2 million higher, but declining in the extra years
2. performance bonuses based on number of innings pitched in previous year-
extra $1 million if he pitches 200+(??) innings
another extra $1 million at 215
another extra $1 million at 230
3. Yankees option if he pitches less than some number of innings (contract is guaranteed if he exceeds). The level where it becomes guaranteed is higher each year. In other words,
— 1 extra year is guaranteed if he pitches over 170 innings in previous year
— 2nd extra year is guaranteed if he pitches over 360 innings (180 avg) in 2 previous years
— 3rd extra year is guaranteed if he pitches over 570 innings (190 avg) in 3 previous years
4. possible additional clause- bonuses based on number of innings in previous 2 or 3 years (even more certainty of consistency)
— if he averages 215 over 3 consecutive seasons- extra $1 million
— if he averages 230 over 3 consecutive seasons- another extra $1 million
Thus, in total, he has the possibility for a boost of as much as $5 million per year.
I’m not fixed on the specific numbers, but I think some structure like this would be very good for the Yankees, and would also be good for CC if he performs.
The key point to all of this is to keep CC, but also to put some additional responsibility on him. In all likelihood his competitiveness will say “yes”, and he won’t be offended that the Yankees need some guarantees.
Nick in SF….ONne of the things I heard last week was that in the next CBA, that the players might trade off the slotting issue for the allowance of trading draft picks….Now that’s something I’ve always felt would be the best approach for signing guys who might otherwise oft for school….As I posted last night and on several occasions, I think Darvish has the goods and maybe will improve with heightened competition, the question is the 100 + million dollar price tag…And as GB pointed out is the track record for previous Japanese pitchers…..Nomo aside , that could be a concern for the guy who cuts the check…..
Ashamed to say I would have thought a Ronnier Mustelier was a weapon or a bottle of wine before just now.
MLBazFallLeagueArizona Fall League by YankeesPR
#Yankees 3B Ronnier Mustelier pops his first AFL home run, a two-run drive 400 feet onto the berm in left-center. Dogs cut it to 6-4, T6th.
Yes, just because they can afford to go all in for Darvish doesn’t mean that they will do it.
Cost, benefit, risk, all will be analyzed.
I can’t bring myself to predict that the NYY will end up with Darvish, though I might be willing to place a little wager on it if I like the odds.
But it’s fun to speculate about it and I hope they get him just because it would be a lot more interesting than any of the other obvious alternatives. It’s an entertainment business, after all.
