Report: DiPoto to be named Angels GM

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 28, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Angels are ready to name Jerry DiPoto their new general manager. DiPoto was the vice president of scouting and player development — and briefly the interim GM — for the Diamondbacks.

Why does a Diamondbacks executive taking an Angels job matter on a Yankees blog?

Because the Yankees pro personnel director director Billy Eppler interviewed for the job twice, and the Yankees director of amateur scouting Damon Oppenheimer generated some early buzz for the job. For now, this seems to clear the way for the Yankees to keep two of their most trusted decision makers.

“We achieved by maintaining major league quality with a 2008 All-Star in Joe Saunders and a guy who quite frankly has been one of the winners in Major League Baseball. I think he trails only Roy Halladay among major leaguers in total wins. He’s won 63 percent of his games since coming to the major leagues, pitched in the postseason on two different occasions. He’s a quality, durable, steady major league starter. We feel like this club needs that, and a guy with a good deal of playoff experience.”

Getting to keep Damon Oppenheimer and Billy Eppler is a plus.

I’m amused, but that deserves an eyeroll

Each team got clutch hits, and each team did not get clutch hits. The game went 11 innings because each team didn’t get clutch hits in every situation. (11 LOB each team)

The Cardinals don’t have this Series wrapped up because in prior games they failed to get the cluth hit and had an army of players LOF.

Same for Texas in the games they did not win.

The Yankees got clutch hits in the games they won, and not enough clutch hits in the games they lost, just falling short.

I’m tired of ragging on the Yankees.

Happy the Yankees get to keep their guys (mainly because I have no idea what happens when/if they ever leave – who would their replacements be? – Chad – maybe a story there?)

I notice that Baseball America reported yesterday that Jose Gil has signed for 2012 with the Yankee organization.

God seems to be really, really into baseball these days.

I guess now that all of the world’s problems have been solved, he’s moved on to sports…

God actually LOVES the NBA, but with the lock out he’s got no choice but to intervene in baseball games.

That was really sneaky stuff, having Hamilton hit an apparent GW HR only to let St Louis win.

Lucifer must be cracking up at the irony

Extract Game 3 and history will look back at this World Series as one of the great WS…..Last night was epic in my mind, and I lost money on the game…..

  14. Erin October 28th, 2011 at 1:06 pm

    hardwired and 86-

  15. Erin October 28th, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Joelsherman1 Both in 9th, 10th innings of Gm 6 when trailing LaRussa reminded players to go out dugout salute crowd if lost. Amazing. #Cardinals.

    Pat M -

I am surprised you think so.

I think it’s been exciting and fun to watch, but from a crisply played baseball POV, is it great? Or merely dramatic?

Or does it matter? Are we nitpicking?

  17. Erin October 28th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Joelsherman1 With Gm 7 now locked in, Sabathia has until Tues noon to alert #Yankees voiding final 4 yrs. Yanks fully expect, which is y they (cont)

Joelsherman1 have been proactive, put together an offer to submit to CC to see if they can avoid him becoming free agent

  18. blake October 28th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Wonder what kind a rating the game tonight will get…..I know im jacked for it

  19. BJK October 28th, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Adrian Gonzalez was right. God didn’t want Boston to go the postseason, because that may have interfered with Hamilton’s home run in a losing effort.

I wonder what’s planned for Game 7 that was set up earlier in the season? God should have been a writer on Lost.

  20. Pat M. October 28th, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Villa Nova-Ya…….How many times do you see a team down to the final pitch with the World Series on the line, not once but twice and prevail…….Dramatic indeed, perfect of off course not, however Game 6 of the 2011 World Series is one for the books and will be remembered and compared to for a very long time….By far the best WS since the 2001 WS……Oh Nelson Cruz !!!! Texas is favored in Game 7, not by much but Vegas thinks so…..I’m an AL guy so go Texas….

  21. blake October 28th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

the way this series has gone it’s hard to say…..but I like the available Cardinals pitchers a lot better than the available Rangers pitchers and the NL rules give the Cards an advantage.

Pujols may have his chance at ultimate glory tonight

  22. Erin October 28th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Vegas has Texas? Interesting. I’ve seen a lot of people saying the Cards are favored tonight.

  23. Pat M. October 28th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Erin…Texas is – 115.00 , Cards + 105.00….Narrow line and by the time the first pitch is thrown it could be a pick em….

  24. Erin October 28th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Pat M-I’m assuming you have money on tonight’s game? Best of luck. :)

  25. Joe from Long Island October 28th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

pat m. – i’m going to show my ignorance about betting. what does that -115 and +105 mean?

  26. Pat M. October 28th, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Erin…….I’ve yet to call in for tonight’s game as I’m waiting for the lines to shift towards St. Louis which they will….That line I posted was from last night’s opening line….I’ll be calling around after 1:00 this afternoon……

  27. pat October 28th, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Whoever said great entertainment, not great baseball summed it up well to me.

If the Yankees had been on the losing side of that game, Lohud today would have been pointing out all the Yankee mistakes and not the clutch hits by the other team.

  28. Pat M. October 28th, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Doc Joe…..It means if you want Texas you have to put up 115.00 to win a hundred, and conversely if you put up a 100.00 on The Cards you win 105.00

  29. Joe from Long Island October 28th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

    thanks, Pat M.

    Later, got called.

  30. pat October 28th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

OF Matt Holliday suffered sprained right wrist and will be replaced on Cardinals active roster by OF Adron Chambers for #Game7. #WorldSeries

  31. m October 28th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

I’m sure there’s an adding insult to injury thing that applies to Holliday right now.

  32. pat October 28th, 2011 at 2:22 pm

NY Post headline tomorrow. Yankee GM Careless….Just latest example since A-Rod contract

  33. Erin October 28th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

pat- that headline wouldn’t shock me at all. ;)

    Glad he’s OK

  34. JM October 28th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

I don’t know, it may have been poorly played, but for sheer drama it was one of the best games I’ve ever seen…..

    —————

Can’t hold that against DiPoto – he was forced by ownership to deal Haren and got pesos on the dollar. He can’t stand up there and say “yeah, this trade stinks, we all know it stinks.” He has to spin it the best way he can.

  36. GreenBeret7 October 28th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Bluster Only is an idiot if he thinks that was the greatest WS game ever played. Entertaining, yes. but one of the worst played and over-managed that I’ve ever seen. This series and this game reminds me a lot of the ’60 series. LaRussa and washington burns through their pitching staffs like they have 25 man pitching staffs…every game.
