Garcia named Type B free agent

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 31, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A Yankees source today confirmed that Freddy Garcia will be a Type B free agent this winter. Of course, to receive compensation, the Yankees would have to offer Garcia arbitration and I’m not sure that’s likely.

Garcia is the Yankees only free agent who qualifies as a Type B. CC Sabathia and Rafael Soriano both qualify as Type A free agents, but Soriano isn’t expected to opt out and the Yankees are obviously trying to lockup Sabathia rather than lose him for a couple of draft picks.

If Sabathia does hit the open market, he obviously would be offered arbitration.

Offer Garcia arbitration and then see if anyone signs him to a 2 year+ deal, if not sign him for 1 year.

  2. pat October 31st, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Other than Soriano what other players have had opt outs that didn’t use them?

Is Derek the only Yankee who still has a player opt?

  3. bdog375 October 31st, 2011 at 2:34 pm

How much would Garcia cost for one year of arbitration? He proved very consistent this last year. Having him as a #6 starter on a one year contract for around $5 mil would not be the worst thing, especially considering the prospect of a draft pick otherwise.

  4. Bronx Jeers October 31st, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Is there a maximum raise for arbitration? Freddy earned 1.5MM base with 2-3 million in bonus.

He just turned 35. I think I’d definitely offer him arb.

Lowe, Jiminez, Carmona, and Masterson is not a bad front 4. Kudo’s to the Indians for seizing an opportunity. And all they had to give up was an A-pitcher. Wow.

    ————–
    Garcia should be offered arbitration.

  6. blake October 31st, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Why wouldn’t they offer him arbitration? If he accepts then you have depth….if he doesn’t then you get a pick….seems like a fairly easy decision to me.

  7. RS October 31st, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Why not offer Garcia arbitration? He could probably get a 2-year offer somewhere, so maybe he declines. And if not, his 1-year contract should be reasonable enough that he can be a trade candidate

  8. Chambliss October 31st, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Garcia is crafty and he is a good fit for the Yankees. I would offer him arbitration. How much could he get? $8 mil?

  9. 108 stitches October 31st, 2011 at 2:43 pm

LaRussa retires. Does that mean that his long time pitching coach Dave Duncan does the same ?
The Yankees should be perfectly happy with Larry Rothschild.
Can’t see Duncan going to a goofy place like Boston if he stays active.

And yes, offer Freddy Garcia arbitration. He’s good insurance.

  10. tomingeorgia October 31st, 2011 at 2:45 pm

The Yanks should also look into Paul Maholm whose option was not picked up by the Pirates. An okay lefty, probably cheap.

    DaSaint007 –

    1. congrats on your little one’s birthday. enjoy the day, and every day.

    2. yeah, that’s not a bad rotation, if you only look at the upside, which there is a lot of. but, there’s also some downsided risk there, also. quite a bit of it. but, if you’re cleveland, i think it’s a risk you take, especially if the braves eat a good chunk of the money for lowe. given their payroll limitations, that’s some good work, there.

  12. Joe from Long Island October 31st, 2011 at 2:49 pm

108 – i get the impression that the yanks are very happy with rothschild. and, i also get the impression that boston is very different from st. louis, and that duncan may not find the caldron of new england red sox nation to his liking, on a lot of levels. if the red sox can run a respected baseball man like curt young out of town, then i think a thinking man pauses before signing on there, if he has other options. like retirement, maybe.

  13. Erin October 31st, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I’d have no problem with Garcia for another year.

Do they need a wide receiver?

  16. joeman October 31st, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Garcia at this time is a #4..#5 SP…would rather have him than Colon, if CC signs would like to see them add a #2 by trade

  17. Bronx Jeers October 31st, 2011 at 2:56 pm

So according to Marc Carig, CC is not going to accept the Yanks offer and will declare free agency.

I think if we don’t hear what the offer was they’re still at the table. They have an exclusive window till midnight Wednesday.

If his shoulder issues are OK according to any physicals, he might be worth a thought by just the fact that he’s lefthanded.

I’d off Garcia arb. He’ll probably get a 2 year deal somewhere & the yanks get a draft pick.

Let’s wait & see what CC does. If he opts out, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rangers offer him a lot. They won’t sigh CJW and I can see them battling hard for CC. Then the yankees will have to make a decision. They may have to go 7, will 25 million a year be enough? Time will tell. But I have hope that it’ll work out somehow.

  37. bruceb October 31st, 2011 at 3:21 pm

So according to WFAN’s Jon Heyman, CC plans “to look around.” I guess that’s another way of saying he wants to get more teams involved in the bidding process to drive the price up. Do we need CC? Yes. Do we need CC at any price? Yes. Should we re-sign CC at any price? No. Personally, I don’t think CC is in the same class as a pitcher like Doc Halladay but the one thing he does do is eat innings (as well as a lot of Cap’n Crunch), which gives the bullpen a day off and Girardi a lot of options with his pitching. Despite all that, I don’t want to see the Yankees hand out another long-term contract to a player who may well have already reached his peak. We have another six years to rue the foolhardiness of the A-Rod contract. To be honest, I’m kind of disgusted with CC that he’s decided to opt out. Yes, the Yanks were real dumb to include an opt-out clause in his contract. But CC was just as dumb to say he wouldn’t exercise it. Now his decision to opt out can only be based on pure greed.

i would like to know your opinion:
if Aaron Hill – $8MM club option for 2012 and $8MM club option for ’13. This will be declined by diamond backs.
posibilitie$$ Erick Chavez, Eduardo Nuñez and Ramiro Peña for Aaron Hill, defense, ofense, or trade, and fit in the club

  39. Villa Nova-Ya October 31st, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Or maybe CC really is not all that happy in NY…

  40. Villa Nova-Ya October 31st, 2011 at 3:35 pm

But what I want to know is this: Why would CC be telling anyone what he plans to do at this particular juncture in time, when the deadline hasn’t come yet?

In other words, who’s Heyman’s source? Or is it whole cloth?

  41. Erin October 31st, 2011 at 3:37 pm

JonLaneNYC Off-the-cuff #Yankees offseason predictions: CC will re-sign. So will Garcia. And Oswalt will sign for 2 years tops.

  42. ET October 31st, 2011 at 3:39 pm

“In other words, who’s Heyman’s source? Or is it whole cloth?”

Probably his agents. or Yankees people, who have been prone to leaking a lot the last couple of years.

  49. yankee 221 October 31st, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Unless the Yankees blew CC away, why wouldn’t he opt out?

There is not much for him to think about. He either gets a great offer or he doesn’t. Unless the Yankees gave him an ultimatum, which I doubt they would, why wouldn’t CC go out there and see if he can leverage an extra year or $20 million from the Yankees?

Only way CC would have to pause is if the Yankees gave him an ultimatum. If they didn’t, it is a no brainer for him to take the offer in hand and shop it, knowing he has it to fall back on whenever he wants. That’s what happens when a player has a team over a barrel…

The Yankees can squeeze one more year from Freddy Garcia as a 5th starter minus any kitchen knife incidents. He has a long history of pitching quality starts. The solid Yankee bullpen takes care of the rest. He is also a mentor to Ivan Nova and would get the ear of Hector Noesi.

Alright – here’s my number one request for the offseason.

    HIRE DAVE DUNCAN.

Not even as the ML pitching coach, but as the organizational pitching coordinator replacing Nardi.

It’s perfect for the Yankees and Duncan. The Yankees have a good pitching coach at the Major League level, Duncan is 66 his wife has been battling illness, the pitching guru role allows him to set up shop in Tampa and stay there.

I would absolutely love for him to work with the kids and set up a strategy to develop Yankee pitchers for years to come.
