In their search for an new general manager, the Orioles are reportedly leaning heavily toward former Red Sox GM Dan Duquette. He’s going for a second interview, and Ken Rosenthal reports that second interview will happen before the Orioles so much as finalize a meeting with Yankees amateur scouting director Damon Oppenheimer.

Read a couple of articles today, that had Darvish at around $125M if he decides to come out to team which wins the posting and then inks him to a long term deal.

  2. tucker November 5th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Hope he’s a better GM than radio-show host.

  3. blake November 5th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Dan Duquette is the cousin of radio host Jim Duquette

  4. jacksquat November 5th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Articles by who? That’s crazy, no one is going that high.

  5. blake November 5th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

A strong argument could be made that Duquette had more to do with Boston’s 2004 title than Theo.

  6. Mike_Boston November 5th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Blake, that’s exactly why Duquette is getting another shot. This same notion has been brought up over the last month. Before that this guy was banished from the game…he’s been out of MLB since ’02. It’s no coincidence he’s suddenly back in there.

  7. tucker November 5th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Oops, my bad. The wrong duquette. Jim duquette and Kevin Kennedy provided good insight on their radio show, but they always hinted that they knew more about certain situations than they would tell the listener. They teased the listener. Seemed like Kevin Kennedy doesn’t want to offend anybody in the hopes that he will land another managerial gig or other non-media baseball position.

Between Buck and the ownership, I wonder how much autonomy Duquette will have.

  8. Chip November 5th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Jim Duquette was also a GM of the O’s prior to Andy McPhail.

On another note – I’m torn on Jair Jurjjens. Talented? Sure. But is he another NL only pitcher who should be stayed away from like the plague or is he a budding young star that the Yankees would be lucky to get? If he’s the latter I would be willing to go Phil Hughes, David Phelps and a low level, high upside guy for Jurjjens and Prado – though my fear is that it’s more likely than not that in NY Jurjjens would perform like Hughes and Hughes would perform like Jurjjens.

  9. 108 stitches November 5th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Duquette is a good hire for Peter Angelos. He has an axe to grind with John Henry.

  10. Pat M. November 5th, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Phil Hughes will reach his expected potential in 2012, it’ll be a huge mistake to give him up mow……GB, I watched an old Bob Hope movie yesterday with Rhonda Fleming as his co=star……WOW, what a dish she was, man oh man…

  11. blake November 5th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Yea Jim and Kevin are both pretty good….they both are knowlegable. Really may favorite on mlbradio is Bowden by far…..say what you want about his GM career but he knows the game and is very entertaining on air. I think Dan Duquette would be as good a hire as any available for the O’s.

  12. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

    Blake-

They have Duquette as long as they leave Oppenheimer alone.

    ;)

  13. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

    edit: “can have”. sorry.

  14. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:11 pm

    Pat M.-

I’m glad he’s going to API again.

  15. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:15 pm

    Chip-

Ask yourself why the Braves would let go of a talented 25 yr. old pitcher ?

Answer: Because he has had arm problems and they are worried about his ability to stay healthy so they move him now.

I think if you look back at relatively recent DL stints, say in the last year or two, you’ll find he hit the DL for that type of problem.

If healthy he is way to young and talented to trade.

A little like the U-Jim situation from a while back.

    ;)

  16. tucker November 5th, 2011 at 5:19 pm

Blake, agreed. Bowden is entertaining and he’s not afraid to step on peoples’ toes. If you are on radio, you have to be all in and not be afraid to call people out.

Pat M … It will be a big year for Hughes. He needs to perform to his potential or I can see the Yankees cutting ties with him. He needs to take control of his conditioning program this offseason and come out blazing.

  17. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:23 pm

    Chip-

It wasn’t him arm in the last 2 seasons but he has had injuries to his hamstring, oblique, and knee.

    Is he durable ?

    ===============

If there is a need to throw extra money around then sign Prince @ 5 for $ 125 be done with it and put him at DH where he can hit 45 HR’s with the YS short porch. At least you would be getting a known commodity. Montero will have to be the BUC unless traded for a SP.

How about Prado as a super utility guy for a mid level prospect ? Jurjjens is fine when healthy which is not too often between his time in Detroit and Atlanta. NYY have too many good prospects to ignore by taking a chance on him.

  20. tucker November 5th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I like Prado as a super utility guy. He has a little bit of speed, some nice power and hits flor a decent average. I imagine Atlanta would want MLB-ready talent in return, though. I wouldn’t trade Nunez for Prado.

  21. austinmac November 5th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

    MTU,

I agree with you on Juryyns. The Braves are very good at selling pitchers at the right time.

  22. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:49 pm

    Mac-

Guy sounds a little like Hughes. Has talent but has trouble staying healthy.

  23. Vineyard Yankee November 5th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Prado can play INF (1B – 2B – 3B) and OF (LF – RF) has a career BA of .293 and is 28 years old. What’s not to like ? How about a AAA arm for him ? He then takes care of the Chavez and Jones issues in one fell swoop.

    Pat M.,

Without question, Rhonda Fleming had the best archetecture in Hollywood in the day. Her and Arlene Dahl. You must have been watching “Alias Jesse James”.

Sad news to hear about Matty Alou and Bob Forsch passing away on back to back days. Two really fine ball players,

Hope all is well with you and family.

  25. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

I’m surprised the Braves are wanting to trade Prado.

He seems versatile, hits for average, and is relatively young.

Perhaps they cannot afford a relatively expensive super-U type guy ?

    If so, we sure can.

    ;)

  26. Vineyard Yankee November 5th, 2011 at 5:56 pm

    MTU November 5th, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Hughes hasn’t been injured as much as Jurjjens has. LOL !

  27. GreenBeret7 November 5th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

a “super utility player” had better be able to play shortstop…and Prado can’t. doesn’t have the arm for starters.

  28. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

    VY-

Some of it was just strange.

For example, that stress fracture of the rib.

I’m more optimistic if Hughes completes his 2nd OS stint at API.

They’ll put him right and he’ll be ready for ST.

Pivotal year coming up for Phil IMO.

  29. Vineyard Yankee November 5th, 2011 at 6:01 pm

In his career Jurrjens has averaged 23 GS and 140 IP per year for the 4 years he has been a SP and he is only 25.

  30. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

    GB-

Well he’s versatile. Let’s just say that. He has no platoon splits so maybe he replaces Chavez and Jones as was suggested above.

    Nunez can play ss.

    Let’s have ‘em both.

    ;)

  31. GreenBeret7 November 5th, 2011 at 6:09 pm

Atlanta won’t give up Prado without getting a player to replace him and that Nunez. Prado will be playing a lot of third base, as he has for the past few years because of Larry Jones’ continued injuries. That leaves Pena to play when Jeter is out and that’s too horrible to contemplate.

  32. MTU November 5th, 2011 at 6:12 pm

    GB-

Maybe they’d go for something other than Nunez ?

I agree. We should not let go of Nunez at this point.

Would they be interested in Laird, + ?

  33. GreenBeret7 November 5th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

More baseball on MLB-TV today. The series in Taiwan continues with Game #4 on MLB right now and the AFL Futures game starts at 8:00 PM tonight on MLB.

  34. GreenBeret7 November 5th, 2011 at 6:16 pm

I doubt that Laird gets it done. Not sure why everyone is so interested in unloading Nunez and Hughes. That’s a lot of very good and very young talent to toss away.

I’m not particularly interested in trading either of those guys.

I’m hoping that Hughes will bounce back strong after his OS conditioning program, and Nunez’s talent, though raw, is still fairly obvious.

    He’s Jeter insurance right now.

  37. Vineyard Yankee November 5th, 2011 at 6:23 pm

    MTU:

Agreed, time for a nice rebound year in 2012. Not to get expectations to high, but 15 wins would be just fine with me.

I think Hughes needs to have another solid season. I hope he does.

I wonder when Duquette will tell Matt Wieters he’s in the twilight of his career like he told Clemens?

An awful GM. Perfect for an awful owner like Angelos.

  40. Vineyard Yankee November 5th, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Pena and a AAA pitcher for Prado. Nunez and Prado on the bench will fill a lot of holes and provide some pop at the plate as well.

Jurjens & prado are due arb raises to around 5 million each & the braves are runored to maybe wan’t to trade both & use the cash for a ss.

Doubt the yankees will wan’t to pay prado 5 million to sit on the bench & losing prospects in addition, especially with nunez & laird.

    1. Pat m – Hughes will be nowhere but back in the Broxnx. You can set your clock by it (but don’t forget to subtract an hour tonight!)

Pena has zero trade value. Not sure what Phelps, Warren or Mitchell would bring, either. Phelps is sort of blue-collar prospect. Not a lot of hype, but he is learning to pitch and compete and may be useful to have around in case the Yanks need a spot starter during the year. He’d be a second or third piece in any trade.

  46. trisha - true pinstriped blue November 5th, 2011 at 6:53 pm

He got vilified for it but he knew what he was talking about.

    3. I would give my firstborn for Prado. If the Bravos are really letting him go, they’re nuts. Of course I believe nothing until I see it in black and white, with the team’s imprimatur in the article. (I’m doing a quick skim of the posts before I go out so didn’t read where the Prado talk started, just read that there’s Prado talk. The guy is great.

  47. trisha - true pinstriped blue November 5th, 2011 at 6:55 pm

sorry, Cupcake, but, we’re not giving up our first kid for a part time player.

  51. Vineyard Yankee November 5th, 2011 at 7:00 pm

No Jurrjens. Prado for Pena and a second tier AAA pitcher.

    ** Prado plays multiple positions INF (1B – 2B – 3B) and OF (LF – RF)

** Coming to the AL he could also DH when necessary.

** Fills the roster spot of Chavez and Jones which could open up a roster spot for an additional pitcher.

** Giving them Pena fills their SS (Util. INF) want with a pitching prospect in the deal to boot.

The Braves look to be trying to save costs (Lowe) and this would get rid of them needing to give Prado a raise.

“sorry, Cupcake, but, we’re not giving up our first kid for a part time player.”

Okay, perhaps I shouldn’t have been so ready to part with our firstborn. I think I meant to say this – Prado is a phenomenal player. Any team that gets him is going to benefit mightily. I’ll be stunned if the Braves give him up.
