A bargain last winter, Garcia’s value on the rise this year

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Nov 08, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Last winter, Brian Cashman’s best offseason signing was a minor league deal with Freddy Garcia. That contract was a steal long before Garcia started Game 2 of the division series, and in theory, a similar deal would make sense for the Yankees again in 2012.

“The conversation I have to have with him (this winter) is different than what I had last winter,” Cashman said.

Cashman said he doesn’t expect a non-roster invitation to be enough to land Garcia this winter, not after he went 12-8 with a 3.62 ERA and provided some rotation stability from start to finish. Garcia seems like a good fit for the Yankees — still relatively cheap, provides rotation depth without a long-term commitment — but his value has gone up.

“I liked what he did for us this last year,” Cashman said. “Obviously he was good enough to run the whole distance.”

A few other very quick notes:

• Cashman said he’s going through the usual “dances” of checking in with agents and getting a feel for the market. “I haven’t made any offers to anybody but expressed an interest in talking further,” Cashman said. “That’s it.” Cashman said he hasn’t received any offers either. It’s just a lot of talking right now.

• Cashman laughed a little bit about the sudden flurry of calls he’s gotten from reporters about Cuban center fielder Yeonis Cespedes. Cashman wouldn’t say whether he’s interested in the player, only said that the Yankees have scouted him.

• Without getting into specifics, Cashman said he’s spoken to other Yankees free agents — not only Garcia — but again, no offers are on the table one way or the other.

• Does the thin free agent market create a problem of potentially overspending on a player? “I guess it would be bad if I felt like I had to spent the money regardless,” Cashman said. “But that’s not what I feel.”

Yeah I’m not giving Freddy Garcia more than a 1 year $3 mil contract. If he can find more than that elsewhere – fine – take the draft pick.

  5. Shame Spencer November 8th, 2011 at 3:23 pm

I want Freddy and Colon back. You just cannot have enough pitching…

  6. Warning Track Power November 8th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Garcia pitched so well last season that he deserves much more than a non-roster invite
    in 2012.

Still unsure if Garcia is what the Yankees need to fill out the starting rotation.
Would Burhle from the White Sox be a better fit???

  7. GreenBeret7 November 8th, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Garcia with an offer of arbitration and if he accepts, offer up a $4 mil one year contract with incentives and a mutual option for one year. Unless Colon is guaranteed a rotation spot, I don’t see him returning. St Louis or Boston is a possibility, though.

  8. Erin November 8th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

I don’t see them bringing both Garcia and Colon back. Garcia has the best shot of returning IMO.

I guess I find this JoPa thrashing more personal than I should. You see I overheard a young woman telling her boss (crying) that she was not up to being _ucked by the group any more. Turns out she was being used by several Supv at a meeting at one of the bosses house. 5 men took turns with her. She was 19 & here on a stateside co-op job from Germany. (BTW, she was gorgeous!)

I overheard this. 2nd hand. I took it to my manager & he was seemingly outraged. Turns out he was 1 of 5 doing her. I confronted him personally later. I talked with the young woman, but she refused to implicate anyone. I had my consulting contract end the next month. I did nothing wrong. I also told HR, but guess what he was 1 of 5 as well. Good ole boys! I told one guy’s wife later & now she is divorced!

The moral, it is bad when the only one doing what was right is the one being punished.

  12. Shame Spencer November 8th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Erin – You might be right but I was sort of hoping the end of last season would keep Colon’s value down. I don’t know how adverse he is to coming out of the pen for us. If he really wants to start he could move on but if he wants a chance at a ring and is comfortable with the team and terms of his deal I could see him coming back.

Ray – I don’t think anyone is implying this was an easy situation to handle for anyone involved.. but the focus should be the protection of the victims and all the ways they were failed in order to prevent these things from happening again.

  13. Shame Spencer November 8th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

(PS – I want his as our long man, something we are lacking. A true replacement for Aceves.)

He’s probably a little better and he’s left handed…..I don’t know hie much more he would cost though and if that additional cost would be worth the difference in performance.

Shame- I hear you. And I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to Colon coming back; I’ll just be a little surprised if both he and Garcia are part of next year’s team.

    ——————-

I would gladly take Buehrle over Freddy Garcia – you’re talking about the difference between a legit #2 or 3 starter vs. a guy who might at best be considered lightning in a bottle.

The problem is that because the pitching market is so attrocious a guy like Buehrle will likely command nearly double what he’s worth.

I would try to get Garcia on a 1 year $3 mil deal and if he can get more than that on the market – God bless.

There are a few other guys I would look at as 2012 versions of Garcia – guys who would take minor league or low base contracts:

    Ben Sheets
    Rich Harden
    Aaron Cook
    Armando Galaragga
    Rodrigo Lopez
    Chris Young
    John Maine
    Joel Piniero
    Paul Maholm

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said he will explore the possibility of trading for Carlos Zambrano.
“We would have to be interested. We would have to explore it because that’s what you should do. You should explore every opportunity. Carlos Zambrano is a heckuva competitor,” said Moore. The GM added that the Royals “have the ability to eat any contract we feel is necessary to improve the club.” Big Z is due $18 million in 2012 and has a $19.25 million vesting option for 2013, and his deal also contains a no-trade clause, which could really limit the number of teams that could pursue a deal if Zambrano wouldn’t be willing to waive the clause.

    ———————————————————————————————————————–

First Derek Lowe, now Carlos Zambrano…….I gotta believe that AJ is tradeable

  22. m November 8th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Buerhle is intriguing, but I can’t help but think he’ll be back with the Sox.

re: Joe Paterno, I’m on the fence now. Support for him by the board of trustees is “wavering”. You should feel bad for the man.

But he did lie about having no knowledge of what occurred. Pretty big mistake in light of what happened.

What is up. Not sure if im late on this but rumor mil has Boston going after Beltran. Thoughts?
Could Bostons offense actually be more potent than they were last year?

Is Aceves a free agent? If so, why not go after him rather than try to find a clone?

    Ray,
That story was freakin sad. Im sure it happens in a lot of corp. work places. Scared to lose
their jobs and trapped at the same time. It reminds me more of the Cain thing than the Paterno one. Paternos made my stomach turn.
Did you ever check back to see if the girl left the company or did something about it?

  24. Chip November 8th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Oh, and I would throw Joe Saunders into the mix if/when he’s non-tendered by Arizona.

  25. SoS November 8th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Burnett should be easier to trade than both of those pitchers. He actually pitched in the a.l. and the toughest division I must add. I believe he would do just fine in the n..l.. I have a feeling we have seen the last of AJ in pinstripes. The Cashman comments were solely to sell his trade chip
publicly last week. Stealth will upgrade this staff just like he did in 09. I expect 2 new pitchers by spring training and would not be surprised if one of the other guys traded is Hughes.

The last 2 seasons how much better then Garcia has Buerle actually been? I agree he’s better…..but how much better and how much more will he cost?

    ————

It makes sense only if they’re not planning to bring back Ortiz.

If they bring in Beltran at a 3 year deal to play that RF it would be an awful move for them – his knees would never hold up – it would be like JD Drew all over again.

If they don’t bring back Ortiz, they have a little more flexibility – DH Beltran a little – DH Youk a little.

  28. SoS November 8th, 2011 at 4:21 pm

    Chip,
The 3 guys on your list that intrigue me are
    Young
    Harden
    Sheets

Pitchers that were dominant before getting injured. Young did really well again last year until
he once again Pavanoed. I wouldnt mind stashing him in the minors and hoping to get something in return. Consider him Brackmans replacement, the walmart version.

  29. 108 stitches November 8th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

Buehrle has had a steady career with no losing seasons. Similar to Freddy Garcia and unlike that slug that clogs up the starting staff at $16.5 for the next 2 years.

It’s an interesting breakdown – and like I said, cost would be a factor, but (as someone who championed the Garcia signing at the time) I am not giving him a multiyear deal. I just don’t trust the health and I think Freddy’s success had so much to do with him changing his style between last year and this year. I think scouting reports will catch up to him. Mark on the other hand has been the same pitcher all his career. If I had to trust one of them going forward, it’s going to be Mark.

  31. Chip November 8th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

    Blake -

Heck, if I could get Buehrle and Garcia I would be thrilled. I’m not trying to knock Garcia here – just saying if he’s got a multi-year offer on the table I wouldn’t match it.

  32. SoS November 8th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

    Chip,
If Beltrans Ortizs replacement than I think the Sox would take a huge step backwards. Beltrans
bat does not strike fear to pitchers and isnt as damaging as Davids. The best thing that can
happen to us is Boston using the DH spot as a musical chairs position. I would rather them get Carlos than Michael Young from Texas or a Prince Fielder.

  33. Chip November 8th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

    SoS

I look at Sheets like Prior from last year – if he can be healthy maybe you get something. If not, what have you lost?

  34. m November 8th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

I know we have our problems with age and injuries. But Beltran, Ortiz, Youkilis? I think Cherrington will want to get younger and more athletic. But they’re going to need warm bodies, and that often means going the veteran route.

  35. m November 8th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Did Ben Sheets ever pitch this year? There were some people who were very angry we did not give him a harder look.

    —————

I think if you look at the Red Sox there are 3 issues (outside of finding a manager) that they’re going to have to deal with – and at least one of them may prevent them from keeping Ortiz around:

    1. What do they do with Varitek and Wakefield? Production suggests they should probably both go – but is a new GM prepared to dump two icons in his first year on the job?

    2. What is Daniel Bard? Is he going to be their closer or go into the rotation. If he’s going to close, do they let Pap walk?

    3. Youk. He’s played 102 and 120 games the last two years due to injuries. And now he’s playing a more demanding position at 3b. They do have a decent 3b prospect – should they bring that kid up and give Youk more time at DH to try and keep him in the lineup more? I think he’s quickly going to become their Jorge Posada.

  37. blake November 8th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Freddy didn’t change his style last year……he threw slow, slower, and slowest in 2010 as well.

  40. SoS November 8th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

    Chip,
I think Bostons catching and DH situation is alot like ours. Their captain and catcher is getting long in the tooth and has a young buck knocking down the door while a veteran has already
taken the job from him keeping it warm. At DH, they have a banged up third baseman that
cant stay on the field from his body breaking down and might need the DH spot to nurse those aches and pains. The only difference is they can trade their broken down third baseman and
go after a legit DH while our third baseman is here for life but we have a legit DH in house.

Wake and Veritek arent as much of a fan favorite like Ortiz. I think they walk while Ortiz gets some jumbo offer to go to Balt or somewhere else that thinks he can put fans in seats. Boston probably go your route.
