Cespedes one of many being scouted in the Dominican

Brian Cashman still won’t say much about sudden sensation Yoenis Cespedes, but it’s clear that the hype surrounding the Cuban center fielder goes beyond internet hysteria. George King today named the Yankees executives who have seen Cespedes workout, and it’s an impressive list of the team’s elite player development gurus. I heard yesterday that international scouting director Donny Rowland has seen far more of Cespedes than anyone else in the Yankees organization, and I suppose that comes as no surprise. Clearly the team is paying close attention.

Today Cashman emphasized the fact that this happens to be a time when there’s a heavy emphasis on several players currently in the Dominican. Cespedes has most of the hype, but he doesn’t have all of the attention.

“Te describe what just took place in the Dominican over the last 10 days, there were a number of players in the marketplace down there, and a number of showcases,” Cashman said today. “MLB had one. The individual (agents) had one. Our scouts had their own individual workouts. It was busy in the Dominican for everybody in the game the past 10 days, not just for the player getting a lot of notoriety. Where that takes us, I don’t know.”

Cashman wouldn’t comment specifically on Cespedes aside from stating the obvious: “They’re certainly putting themselves out there to be evaluated.” Today, Kevin Goldstein did another piece on the viral video and the ensuing hype.

“We had an army of scouts down there because there was a large population of players that were presented for viewing,” Cashman said. “We had a number of scouts go in there to evaluate over a nine or 10 day period, a lot of different showcases, not just him… In fairness to the other clubs, (they did the) same thing.”

I don’t know about Cespedes but if the Yanks start selling spit-roasted pig at the stadium, that will make me very happy.

The reason the Yankees should invest in players like this (and Darvish if the cost doesn’t go totally crazy) is because they need to compensate for having poor draft positions, including often losing their first rounder to type A signings (like this could be a way to compensate for the idiotic signing of Soriano).

    Stay classy, Boras.

    “on November 1st.

A deal between the D’Backs and Bloomquist’s agent Scott Boras seemed unlikely a few days ago, when Boras and GM Kevin Towers debated who owed who a phone call. Boras explained to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic on Saturday,

***”It sounds to me like what happened is, they got upset when Willie opted out. They got emotional and they went out and signed a guy who hit .169.***

Boras was taking a shot at John McDonald, another utility infielder who the D’Backs re-signed to a two-year deal earlier this month. Towers has been generous with such role player multiyear contracts, as Geoff Blum was inked to a two-year deal a year ago. The Diamondbacks are well-covered in case Stephen Drew is still recovering from July ankle surgery when the season begins. They’re also covered if they are not able to sign Aaron Hill, leaving an opening for a second base platoon.”

SI_JonHeyman 1 hour if madson/phillies deal does blow up, rangers, red sox and nationals are expected to pursue madson.

SI_JonHeyman 1 hour madson/phillies deal falling through after sides verbally agree on terms would be highly unusual. still awaiting ceo ok tho.

blake – just finished reading GJ report. No surprises. Spanier knew; Paterno was told exactly what happened – in detail; and there were laws in place that REQUIRED reporting of any suspicion of child abuse/molestation to the appropriate state agencies. No reports were ever filed. Lots of people knew about Sandusky. All of them turned a blind eye.

Paterno doesn’t deserve to coach until the end of the season. My opinion.

    Spanier suppposedly resigning tonight.

    And this.

    Trisha,

I read enough last night to be disgusted….but I haven’t had time to read through the entire thing. Does it say that exactly what Paterno was told and when? How on earth coukd this guy have been allowed to run around on campus for the last 10 years? If the stuff in that report is true…..and as many people knew about it as it seems……then Penn State is going to have a tough recovery from this….

  9. blake November 9th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Did the GA tell Paterno merely that something inappropriate happened in the shower or did he tell him detail what he really saw? Did Paterno really know about and understand the severity of what was going on? That’s the question I think regarding him……

blake, it says (and Paterno acknowledged to the GJ) that the graduate assistant told him the day after the event occurred. He asked to meet with him at Paterno’s home and he told him exactly what he witnessed. The two dregs Paterno told also told Spanier (as Spanier acknowledged to the GJ.) And the dregs also met with the graduate assistant, and he told them exactly what he saw. They told him they would take care of it.

They lied to the GJ and really waffled on what the grad assistant told them. GJ noted grad assistant extremely credible, stooges lied.

Also GJ testimony and totally corroborated – A janitor witnessed Sandusky performing oral sex on a young boy in the showers and reported it to his superior. The other janitors who testified said he was crying and so upset they thought he was going to have a heart attack. It appears that report never got any further than his superior.

Spanier allowed Sandusky back onto campus after he retired and he was given free reign of the buildings, etc.

The grad assistant told Paterno and the two other amoral morons exactly what happened. He saw Sandusky having anal sex with a young boy in the shower. He told the GJ he told all three what he saw. I seriously doubt he would have spoken in code to them. He was upset enough to call his father and have to leave and go to his father’s house to talk about it. He didn’t just think he may have seen something “inappropriate” going on. He said specifically what he saw going on. He said he heard slapping sounds that sounded like sexual activity and when he looked in the showers (because it was semester break or something so he was suprised to see lights on in the shower room) he saw Sandusky having anal sex with a young boy.

Any more information or proof needed?

    They should all die.

  12. blake November 9th, 2011 at 7:27 pm

Why on earth would they allow this guy back on campus and why would they cover this up? What was the motive to cover for this guy? I think Paterno may be guilty of negligence …….but it seems like some of these others creeps actually went through measures to bury this……unreal.

blake, as I said before, unfortunately it isn’t so unusual at all with higher education. The worse the crime, the more they worry about the school’s reputation. Add to it that Sandusky was part of what defines Penn State – their football program – well, all the more reason to just keep it quiet. One huge f’n conspiracy of silence. Again, Paterno is god there. Everybody knows it. And football is god there.

If it were some member of a nondescript department that was caught, maybe the guy would have been fired immediately, stripped of all benefits, etc., and maybe they would have tried to keep it quiet that way.

The best one is that they violated federal law by not reporting the crime to the DOE.

    MF’n smug, self-interested a-holes.

If the grad assistant told Paterno that he saw Sandusky having anal sex with Paterno’s son Mark, I wonder what Paterno would have done about it.

  14. blake November 9th, 2011 at 7:36 pm

“The worse the crime, the more they worry about the school’s reputation”

Well it didn’t quite work out good for their reputation. I wanna know who on this board of trustees knew about it too.

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue November 9th, 2011 at 7:36 pm

blake, I know that this may be a self-evident statement, but this is HUGE. I don’t think I can wrap my mind around all of the implications. As someone mentioned on Sportscenter, how easy is it going to be for kids to be recruited to Penn State to play football? Are parents going to trust that their sons are safe? Do they want them at that kind of institution anyway? How about kids that aren’t going to play football, but just study? Do their parents want them at that kind of institution? Do they want to be there?

Penn State will probably take the biggest hit in its history as an institution, and who knows the extent of damage or recovery time.

Are alumni going to be as generous as they were in the past?

This thing has tentacles that don’t quit.

  16. tomingeorgia November 9th, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Does anyone else but me think that the Pennsylvania courts will figure this out, through trials with actual evidence presented? I thought that’s the way we did business like this in the USA. Maybe not, anymore. Sad.

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue November 9th, 2011 at 7:39 pm

“Well it didn’t quite work out good for their reputation. I wanna know who on this board of trustees knew about it too.”

And you see that’s the hell of it. Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. You can imagine that the brainless amoral bas*ards figured they had nothing to worry about, that king football was powerful enough to make it all go away. After all, these were just kids from dysfunctional families. Who was going to believe them anyway.

    Good question about the trustees.

MarcCarig Posada undecided about playing next season but he’s resigned to the fact it’s not gonna be with the Yankees.

MarcCarig Says he’s talked to Bernie Williams about the situations, which are similar. Says a few teams have reached out.

MarcCarig Posada sees himself as somebody who could be a backup catcher/DH etc. Cashman said he had yet to call Posada’s agents.

MarcCarig Posada says it’s not going to happen. Doesn’t hold bitterness toward Yankees.

MarcCarig Still, Posada says he will always be a Yankee.

And blake, think about that AG who went missing. What an hellacious horror show. You’d think this were fiction if you didn’t know better.

Gonna run an errand. Talk to you later.

    God help us all.
