    Kubel:
    2010: .249/.323/.427/.750
    2011: .273/.332/.434/.766

    Cuddyer
    2010: .271/.336/.417/.753
    2011: .284/.346/.459/.805

    Swisher
    2010: .288/.359/.511/.870
    2011: .260/.374/.449/.822

Kubel is a bad outfielder and while Cuddyer is versatile and I like that…..he’s older and has been an 800 OPS player like 1 time. Swisher is .800 + OPS almost every season.

  2. 86w183 November 13th, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Kubel helps Yanks vs RHP more than Cuddyer does, and will cost less.

Kubel or Sizemore as 4th OF with the idea that they’ll all play quite a bit and have some DH duties as well makes some sense depending on the cost. I’m fine if they just go with Dickerson there and use resources for rotation upgrade and/or LHP for bullpen. Those are higher priorities to me.

As for awards… I don’t expect the Yanks to win any of them… But Granderson, Nova and Sabathia should all be in the top 3-5.

  3. blake November 13th, 2011 at 2:23 pm

    and also…..about Grady Sizemore.

The last time he played a full season was 2008. His slash that season was .268/.374/.502./876. That slash is very Swisher like and he always K’d a ton. (130 in 2008 and 150+ the 2 seasons before that).

What made Grady special was the 30/30 ability as a CFer…..the injuries have robbed him of the speed and ability to play CF. To me at this point his upside is probably what Swisher is year in year out…..and that’s if he could stay healthy which he hasn’t done for going on 4 years.

As I said, would love to bring him on as a 4th outfielder and then see what happens…..but there is no way you could trade Swisher to make room for a guy when it’s unknown even if he COULD stay on the field if he’s even as good as Swisher anymore.

  4. blake November 13th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

would love Kubel or Sizemore as 4th outfielders…..don’t think either would agree to that role unless the money was significantly more. Sizemore needs to play every day to reestablish his value and there are teams out there that would give Kubel an every day job as well I’d imagine.

Cuddyer is another guy who categorically cannot hit righties. He has a career OPS+ around 90.
    ==============

Categorically cannot hit righties? Don’t you think that your exaggerating just a bit? Having a 90 OPS+ means that he is about 10 percent below average as a right-handed batter facing right-handed pitching. His numbers against righties aren’t bad, evn if they are unspectacular: .264/.326/.433/.760. Against lefties, Cuddyer is quite good with an OPS+ of 119, hitting .290/.378/.491/.869. Moreover, the Yanks had more trouble with lefties than righties last year

Hey, I think that there is something WAAAY off on the OPS+ computations on baseballreference.com. I thought Cuddyer’s numbers looked fishy, so I tried looking up A-Rod’s splits and I found that he has an OPS + of 100 against righties and 99 against lefties. There is no way that correct. There is absolutely no way that a player with a career .955 OPS is a league-average player.

    Cuddyer is a career .794 OPS player with .272 BA;
Swisher is a career .826 OPS player with .254 BA average.

I see it as a tradeoff between BA and OPS: I’m willing to trade a 4-percent dropoff in OPS for a 7-percent gain in BA. Similarly so for Kubel….

  8. blake November 13th, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Again…..its a lateral move at best unless you can trade Swisher for something useful….like a SP.

  9. yankeefeminista November 13th, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Not that I am a fan of Swisher’s long swing in the playoffs… however, Cuddyer’s numbers aren’t any where near as good as Swisher’s in the regular season. Then you are adding 20-25 HR’s Swish is going to hit vs. RHP–both his strength and his detriment. Hoping he can revert to a more compact swing from that side going forward. However, with Cuddyer how are you subtracting that pop from RF when you still have Gardner playing LF? Plus Swish is a better defensive OF’er than Cuddyer.

    Cuddyer: .264/.327/.435
Swish .247/.341/.474 and .866, .880, .763 OPS since joining the Yankees.

  10. yankeefeminista November 13th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

*That triple slash is vs. righties.

Hey, I think that there is something WAAAY off on the OPS+ computations on baseballreference.com.

    ——————–

You are looking at tOPS+ which measures against the player himself not the league like OPS+.

Also, the Yankees were way worse vs RHP last season.

    .256 .325 .396 vs RHP.
    .255 .342 .457 vs LHP.

And they were even more formidable vs LHP once Montero was included in the lineup.

  12. yankeefeminista November 13th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Pruf, yeah not sure why Ramirez is being relegated to the pen. Don’t know if that is legit and from a Yankee source, but it would be a shame to give up on him. Likewise, I saw a plus fastball and a plus plus change when he pitched at Lakewood a couple of years ago. Supposedly, in Instructs his stuff was equally as filthy, plus he had finally added an average to above average(?) slider. Would love for us to get our hands on him by second half of the Trenton season, so we can properly monitor him and give Nardi et al hell if they don’t bring him along properly! ;)

  13. yankeefeminista November 13th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Right, my point: we are bad vs. righties, so why add another player who doesn’t hit them well?

  14. LGY November 13th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Yeah. Especially one who is worse defensively and 2 years older.

    LGY, yep.

  16. blake November 13th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Beltran would be an upgrade over Swisher if he could stay healthy…..he’s the only free agent outfielder that is though.

  17. blake November 13th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Sign Cespedes if they think he’s the real deal……start him in the minors and if it turns out he is then they can put him out there in the 2nd half.

  18. yankeefeminista November 13th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Pruf, I should say plus plus FB but I guess they like that velo bump out of the pen more. Still if he can improve the slider don’t see why they wouldn’t give J-Ram every opportunity to start. He is still only 20 y.o. Stoneburner only has two pitches and who knows how his slider will evolve, and still we having heard any pen talk about him of late.

Blake, yes all for signing Cespedes, if we deem him worthy. Not sure about Beltran’s viability with the health issues…

Okay, I see. Thanks! This tOPS+ strikes me a rather superfluous stat. I wonder why they don’t compute OPS+ on platoon splits, which would be much more informative.

  20. kd November 13th, 2011 at 3:55 pm

why not just bring back andruw jones if possible? he played well second half, even if you have to give him a raise, he’s not that expensive.

he’s also a veteran, power bat off the bench who’s seen a lot of playoff runs. could help talk guys like laird and montero through it. team seemed to like him

I agree with this. Yet again, our scouts are pretty darned good these days. If they think he’s worth the money, then I’d take that gamble.

And I whole heartedly agree with this lateral movement at best debate with Swisher. You either go with a full upgrade or you stick with him. Signing Kubel or Cuddyer in hopes they’d out perform Swisher in the post season seems silly to me.

  22. blake November 13th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Personally I think Beltran’s health issues are a little overblown. He had microfracture surgery ….and it took him awhile to get past that….but aside from that he’s been pretty duration le in his career and he played 140+ games last year. The whole thing for me would be length of deal because of his age…..2 years sign me up.

  25. DaSaint007 November 13th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Beltran would seek a 2-3 year deal. Too many years for too many uncertainties. However, if someone wanted to give me a legit mid-rotation starter for Swisher straight up, I’d have to consider it. All that said, I don’t see it happening.

The only upgrade in RF that I’d like to consider before/during or after 2012 is Justin Upton or Matt Kemp.

  26. kd November 13th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

i’d really like to see the yankees make a run at cespedes. and some of the other cubans that have defected. some of those players are great athletes at are 18 to 20 years old. bleacher report talks about jorge soler.

    http://bleacherreport.com/arti.....w-contract

the yankees will never get the pick of the litter in the us draft, they have to maximize in latin america. take a few chances on top level athletes and use the financial advantage

We are less than a week away from the deadline for filing major league and minor league reserve lists in preparation for the Rule 5 draft. Here is my speculation as to the Yankee organzation players who would be subject to at least the major league phase of the draft if not moved to the 40-man roster by the deadline. This list will change as transactions occur between now and the deadline. Cot’s Baseball Contracts, which is linked on this site, says that the deadline is November 19, 2011. Fox Sports MLB Offseason Calendar says that the deadline is on November 18, 2011. Major League Rule 2(a) which is given verbatim on Cot’s says that the deadline is on a date designated by the Commissioner no later than November 20 unless November 20 is not a business day. If November 20 is not a business day then the Commissioner’s designated date can be no later than the last business day preceding November 20.

By my count, there are 51 such Yankee organization players:

First, the pitchers. There are 22 of them. They are: Tim Norton, Craig Heyer, Richard Martinez, Francisco Rondon, Michael Solbach, Francisco Gil, Jairo Heredia, D.J. Mitchell, David Phelps, Cory Arbiso, Jeremy Bleich, Pat Venditte, Brandon Braboy, Ryan Flannery, Manuel Barreda, Yobanny Reyes, Joel De La Cruz, Steve Evarts, Victor Beriguete, Israel Tolentino, Ryan Pope, and Ronny Marte.

Second, the catchers. There are 6 of them. They are: Jose Gil, Ryan Baker, Mitch Abeita, Francisco Arcia, Jhorge Liccien, and Damian Taveras.

Third, the infielders. There are 13 of them. They are: Bradley Suttle, Kelvin Castro, Emerson Landoni, Jose Pirela, Jose Toussen, Kevin Russo, Corban Joseph, Addison Maruszak, David Adams, Carmen Angelini, Reegie Corona, Walter Ibarra, and Jose Mojica.

Finally, the outfielders. There are 10 of them. They are: Austin Krum, Damon Sublett, Cody Johnson, Dan Brewer, Ray Kruml, Kelvin DeLeon, Taylor Grote, Eduardo Sosa, Abraham Almonte, and Zoilo Almonte.

I have included Zoilo Almonte on the list, even though some say the Yankees may be in the process of adding him to the 40-man roster (a recent transaction report said that he was assigned to the New York Yankees) because his name has not yet shown up on any published 40-man roster that I have seen.

Most observers are probably in agreement that D. J. Mitchell and David Phelps will likely be added to the 40-man roster within the week. Beyond that, I would think that Pat Venditte, Corban Joseph, David Adams, and Zoilo Almonte are possible additions to the 40-man, although the Yankees have been real quiet on the PR regarding Adams lately. Ryan Flannery is my extreme dark horse for the 40-man.

Pursuant to Major League Rule 2(b)(1), the Major League Reserve List can have a maximum of 40 players, the AAA Reserve List a maximum of 38 players, and the AA Reserve List a maximum of 37 players. Players on the above list of names who are neither selected in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft, nor placed on the AAA reserve list, can be selected in the AAA phase of the draft. Players on the above list of names who are on a Class A or Rookie Reserve List can theoretically be selected in either the major league phase, the AAA phase, or the AA phase of the draft. To my knowledge, the Yankees have never made available to the public their AAA, AA, A, and Rookie reserve lists prior to the Rule 5 draft.

Much appreciation goes to Cot’s Baseball Contracts for publishing on its website within the past year the full text of the Major League Rules. I never understood why MLBAM never saw fit to publish the Major League Rules on its website. Neither did Baseball America. Now, instead of fans arguing endlessly over the meaning of some commentator’s paraphrase of a rule even the commentator has not seen, we can simply read and refer to the verbatim text of the rule as found on Cot’s. Of course, even as I write this, the Major League Rules may have to change to reflect the new CBA, if one is reached, and changes may or may not have any effect on events and transactions during this offseason. The above list of names is provided in the belief that eligibility for the Rule 5 draft will not be changed for 2011 even if there is a new CBA before the December draft.

Thanks for your efforts in putting together this list. This should keep Brian Cashman and Mark Newman very busy this week in shaping the 40-man roster and prepare for any upcoming moves.

Yeah blake, I agree. I’m not that excited Cespedes as I find the hype somewhat dubious, but if the team thinks he’s the real deal, than that’s enough for me to get behind him.

It’s the same with Yu Darvish. Pay the premium for the talent, you won’t see those young guys in MLB free agency.

Yes, he was in the pen in Instructs and most pitchers stuff plays better in the pen vs. the SP. Sure, his FB was sitting mid 90′s but his FB and changeup were great as a SP until the injury. The slider has been a work in progress. I am not ready and I don’t think the Yankees should ready to categorize J-Ram as a RP.
