Cashman met today with agent for Wilson and Oswalt

Brian Cashman just met with a small group of reporters here in Milwaukee. A lot of smaller notes came out of it, but the closest thing to legitimate news was Cashman acknowledging that he met today with Bob Garber, the agent for both C.J. Wilson and Roy Oswalt. Cashman said they talked about both pitchers, but Cashman wouldn’t characterize his interest level in either.

“We spoke in a non-descriptive fashion,” he said, finding a new way to say something without saying anything at all.

Cashman said several agents have asked to speak here in Milwaukee. The Garber meeting happened around 4 p.m., strictly because each side had time to meet up right then. Otherwise, Cashman said he hasn’t met with any agents since getting to town, but he’d like to if and when he has time.

The Yankees still have no free agent offers on the table.

    LOL. Get real.

They’ll resign Swisher before Cabrera returns to be their starting RF for 2013.

    Good grief.

as I figured….they have pushed all their chips to the middle of the table for the present.

Cashman with due diligence for Oswalt and Wilson. Doubtful they’re high on his priority list but you have to keep your opponents guessing as he does so well.
See last year’s dinner with Crawford in Orlando for reference.

  7. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 7:35 pm

    Blake,

Like I said, if I’m the Phillies I’m holding onto Hamels and extending him unless someone offers a boatload of offense.

But don’t expect the Phillies to let him go for nothing.

  8. djsunyc November 15th, 2011 at 7:35 pm

with CC tied up, nova, and hughes, you really only have 2 spots open long term.

AJ could still be here in 2013 on his final season. so i don’t want to tie up that 5th spot with a long term contract with so many young pitchers in the minors close to making the show.

so either trade or sign for someone young (like yu) or sign a 1 year stopgap.

buerhle is gonna be a 3 year deal and i don’t think that’s a good move for us unless we dump aj next winter.

  9. DaSaint007 November 15th, 2011 at 7:44 pm

With only CC on a long-term contract, and AJ only signed for 2 more years, there’s room for 1 additional long-term contract. That still leaves 2 slots open for young pitchers in 2012 and 2013, with another slot open in 2014.

    Lots of flexibility here.

  10. blake November 15th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

“But don’t expect the Phillies to let him go for nothing.”

they may not have a choice if he doesn’t want to stay there…..they won’t be able to get enough in a trade.

  11. Joe from Long Island November 15th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

GMs play one big game of chicken.

  12. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

    Blake,

If they sense he doesn’t want to stay there, they will take less in a trade. It doesn’t hurt to open negotiations by asking for the moon. I don’t think the Phillies would let him walk for nothing. They’d find a trade and the market would be strong for him even as a 1 year rental.

  13. Joe from Long Island November 15th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Not chicken…..just had a brain lock, but you all know what I mean…..lots of disinformation being put out there.

  14. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

“If they sense he doesn’t want to stay there, they will take less in a trade.”

no they won’t….they’ll keep him and try to win the WS….because that’s what they have been about the last 3-4 years….winning now.

  15. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

If Hamels isn’t traded this winter….then I can’t see them moving him in season. Teams contending for a WS don’t trade #1 type starters at the deadline…

  16. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

    Blake,

They have 4 playoff games of a series covered by Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.

Either they trade Hamels for a boatload offense or they lock him up.

    The offers will be strong.

  17. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

The winter just started. The offers will be significant.

  18. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

“Either they trade Hamels for a boatload offense or they lock him up.”

who is giving a boatload of big league ready offense for one year of Hamels? There is an option C…..which is they keep him and go for a title and then he becomes a FA. It’s interesting that they aren’t discussing extension now……suggests that he wants to test the market next winter.

The Phillies would need to get a signifcant upgrade to their big league offense to trade away a big chunk of their identity (their starting pitching)

  19. RI Attorney November 15th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

Cashman is just plain weak. He’s interested in mediocre players like Wilson, Buehrle, Jackson and Oswalt, . . . but isn’t interested in great players like Pujols, Fielder or Reyes.

  20. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

“Either they trade Hamels for a boatload offense or they lock him up.”

who is giving a boatload of big league ready offense for one year of Hamels?

    ***********

The Yankees were willing to trade an elite hitting prospect for 1/2 season of Lee.

The point is, you want to acquire that player so that he experiences life on your team and you have 1 year to make a good impression on that player before you sit down at the negotiating table.

  21. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

So it’s not merely 1 year of Cole Hamels. It’s 1 year of Cole Hamels + an opportunity to increase the probability that he wants to stay with your team.

Man, I feel like I walked into a pawn store with the hope diamond and you’re accusing me of pulling it out of a gumball machine.

    This is Cole Hamels.

  22. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

“The Yankees were willing to trade an elite hitting prospect for 1/2 season of Lee.”

2 problems there. 1) the Phillies won’t be interested in prospects for Hamels….again win now 2) the Mariners weren’t contenders and were at a totally different place…..they wanted prospects.

Again, whatever trade they would make would have to make their 2012 club better than it would be with Hamels on it…..that’s a tough get for a rental.

  23. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

    “This is Cole Hamels.”

    yes…which is why I don’t think they’ll trade him.

  24. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

    Blake,

Why wouldn’t they be interested in major league ready prospects like Montero? Is his bat not ready? Why wouldn’t the Phillies think they could win a playoff series with 4 games (enough to win a 5 or 7 game set) in the hands of Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee?

How would trading away a single start in a playoff series severely damage their hopes of winning now with the 1-2 they’d still have in the rotation?

the Yankees wouldn’t trade him for a rental I don’t think and where would he play for the Phillies? He’s not ready to catch every day and he couldn’t DH in the NL

“So basically you’re banking on no trade, no extension.”

I’m not banking on anything…..that’s what I’d bet on happening if they don’t do something with him this winter (either trade or extension). If he’s with them when the season starts I think he’ll hit the market next winter.

  31. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:32 pm

“The Yankees were willing to trade Montero for 1/2 season of Lee. Why not for 1 year of Hamels?”

Because he’s ready for the big leagues now and they clearly need his bat. Cash seems relieved that trade didn’t happen in hindsight.

  32. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

where would Montero play for the Phillies anyway?

  33. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Cash is trying to drive the price up for Wilson

  34. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:36 pm

    Blake,

    Maybe.

But maybe he feels he missed out by making a Montero for 1/2 season of Lee swap. Maybe he feels he could have increased the chances that Cliff Lee would’ve stayed in NY had the Yankees had only a half season to court him and endear him to the team before he reached free agency.

Maybe he feels if he had Hamels for a year, he could increase the chances that Hamels signs with the Yankees when he reaches free agency.

  35. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:37 pm

edit: by NOT making a Montero for 1/2 season of Lee swap.

Is there not a greater risk in the assumption that you can sign Hamels as a free agent? You seemed to feel confident Kemp would test free agency and choose the Yankees over everybody else. Who knows which team Hamels will choose? I’d rather give him a year tour and go to work on compelling him to pitch for the Yankees for the rest of his career.

  41. mick November 15th, 2011 at 8:44 pm

how do we know who is cut out to pitch in NY?
do they know anything about hamels mental makeup?

  42. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:45 pm

    Bret,

the Yankees need Montero’s bat more than they need Hamels….you still haven’t answered where he would play for the Phillies. The Kemp extension was a surprise…..but it happened this winter and it was always about whether Kemp wanted to stay there or not and if their ownership would step up….they did and he stayed.

  43. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:45 pm

  46. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:49 pm

    “He’s a catcher, right?”

Who isn’t ready to catch everyday…..no DH in the NL. The situation with Lee is exactly why you don’t trade Montero for Hamels…..he could turn around and sign elsewhere just like Lee did…..

  47. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:50 pm

    Mick,

Because Philly is a tough market with brutal/belligerent fans and Hamels has one big playoff games for them in the past. The guy has 10 more good years in him. His his lefty arm is golden for the New York Yankees. Players who perform in NY, especially big-game pitchers are loved by the fans. I’d rather have Hamels than Felix.

  48. mick November 15th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Maybe the Phillies think he will be ready by mid-season?

The situation with Lee can’t be compared, because we don’t know if pitching in New York would have changed his mind.

  50. blake November 15th, 2011 at 8:52 pm

If Hamels wont discuss extension this winter then that’s a strong indication he wants to test free agency…..by that same token if the Phillies know that and still wont trade him this winter then that’s a strong indication they are going to keep him and try again to win it all in 2012.

  51. mick November 15th, 2011 at 8:53 pm

philly is small time compared to the ny and boston press

  52. Bret The Hitman November 15th, 2011 at 8:55 pm

I’d rather have the advantage of having 1 full year to recruit Cole Hamels and endear him to the Yankee way, the players and the fans and vice versa. After the year is up, you’re the team with the most $$ to sign him plus you have him sold on NY. If you can’t sell him on NYC then you didn’t do your job.

  53. mick November 15th, 2011 at 8:57 pm

MILWAUKEE — Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto promised last week that he would pursue the best starting pitchers available and he delivered that message to the agent for free-agent lefty C.J. Wilson.

“I believe the interest is reciprocated,” said Dipoto, who along with assistant GM Scott Servais met with Bob Garber, Wilson’s agent, at the General Managers Meetings. “I’m sure we’re one of 30 interested in C.J. He’s got a lot in front of him and he’s earned the right to play the field.

“I’d like to see how it goes. I don’t want to express specific interest in any one player. Whether it’s Wilson, Mark Buehrle, Hiroki Kuroda, these are some of the best in the world. If you’re not interested in some level, you’re not human.”

(Sorry I wasn’t finished with that thought!)

But I certainly never said a word about it.

Here we’re talking about an issue so important, and some people have their backs up.

I truly believe that at least some of the posters who have complained are more upset that we have questioned the great Joe Paterno. I think there are people who get so attached to certain people and places that they become almost frantic inside when anyone suggests that they just might be looking at naked emperors!

Anyway, it’s tough to have it all ways. And thank you to those who have voiced maybe a tiredness with the topic but didn’t feel the need to try to stifle all discussion.

It does obviously remain a huge topic everywhere else. I’ll tell you that it is nonstop on EEI and those guys just think that Paterno is the biggest idiot in the world now and that (here comes the obvious) the Penn State brand was far more important than the lives of those victims. They are in disbelief over the breadth of the coverup and the legal officials involved and the shennanigans they’ve pulled.

Okay, that was my 25 cents for the night. Also heard that there may be some big surprise coming tomorrow – more information? Who knows.

Did you know that Sandusky AND his wife attempted to contact one of the kids before he (the kid) was scheduled to testify in front of the grand jury? Nice.

    —————————————–

That’s the thing eventually when a big story drops there is a fatigue factor and the news slowly dies down but everyday there is something new: new victims, new interview, new person comes forward, etc.

  73. rockchuck3006 November 16th, 2011 at 9:27 am

the phillies needed a closer, they went out and signed the best closer available, the yankees need a solid left handed starter, they should sign cj wilson now and not wait for their competition to do it and yes they do need a bat,a 300 hitter to go along with cano, what is cashman thinking?
