Yankees getting into the holiday spirit

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Nov 19, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Truth is, the Yankees are good about things like this. You see plenty of individual players getting themselves heavily involved in philanthropic organizations, on Thursday night Brian Cashman slept outside to promote relief for young victims of homelessness, and the organization as a whole does multiple events like the ones listed here. The Yankees sent a schedule of some of their holiday season plans. Here are some of the highlights.

• On Wednesday, November 23, the Yankees and Legends Hospitality will provide a Thanksgiving meal for approximately 200 local residents at the Supportive Children’s Advocacy Network (SCAN). Located in the Bronx, SCAN has provided support to thousands of New York City-based at-risk families since 1977.

• On Thursday, December 8, the Yankees will partner with Community Board 4 (CB4) to host the 2011 4 + 44 Awards Ceremony at Yankee Stadium in the Delta SKY360 Suite. During the event, local police officers will be recognized for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of CB4 residents.

• On Wednesday, December 14, the Yankees, along with White Rose and members of the Bronx clergy, will hold their 18th annual Holiday Food Drive from 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Non-perishable food will be accepted at Yankee Stadium’s Gate 2. Fans who donate at least 30 pounds will receive a voucher good for two tickets to a designated Yankees home game in 2012. Last year, more than 105,000 lbs. of food was collected and distributed to families in need throughout the Bronx.

• Yankee Stadium will once again transform into the North Pole on Friday, December 16, when the Great Hall plays host to the 2011 Winter Wonderland. This event, held in conjunction with the Bronx Borough President’s Office, will treat several thousand local youth to a holiday extravaganza complete with holiday decorations, festive music, food and drink, as well as a holiday gift for each child in attendance. Approximately 5,000 local children enjoyed last year’s event.

• The Yankees will host the 2011 Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Varsity City Championship Football game at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, December 6, at 5:00 p.m. Last year, approximately 6,000 fans were in attendance to witness Fort Hamilton and Lincoln High School compete for the City Championship.

• On December 20, the 2011 MVP Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony will take place at Yankee Stadium. The night will honor 11 scholar-athletes from each of the five boroughs of New York City and will recognize these individuals for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements. In addition, the 55 scholar-athletes will be recognized on field during the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on December 30.

Sponichi: Farsad Darvish says his son is at 50-50

by Gen on Nov.20, 2011 @ 12:47 pm, under NPB

According to Sponichi, Yu Darvish is planning on holding a family meeting after the Nippon Series.

Farsad Darvish is quoted as saying, “At this point, it is at about 50-50.”

Yu Darvish sat in the same booth on Saturday night as Nippon Ham Fighters’ newest manager, Hideki Kuriyama. After the broadcast, he apparently said he had nothing to talk about and that his training was more or less going fine.

Kuriyama said, “I think the two of us were able to focus on a wonderful game. We didn’t talk about [the Majors] at all.”

Would love to see the Yanks get Darvish, The guy has good, if not great movement on his pitches. Age is good, stuff appears very good, but I guess we won’t know for sure until we see it here against MLB.

Report: Braves have interest in Eduardo Nunez
    By Mike Axisa
Via John Harper, the Braves let the Yankees know that they have interest in trading for Eduardo Nunez last week. “They need offense, they need a shortstop because they don’t want to bring (Alex) Gonzalez back, and they like Nunez a lot,” said Harper’s source. “They know the jury is out on him defensively, but they think his offense is strong enough that he could move to the outfield if he can’t be their long-term answer at short.”

The two sides apparently did not discuss any kind of framework for a trade, and Harper says no names were mentioned on Atlanta’s side. Feel free to come up with trade scenarios and rosterbate as much as you want, but remember, just say no to Jair Jurrjens. ·

….I would be wiliing to bet that the team with the fifth best record in each of the leagues averaged less than 90 wins, since the realignment and advent of the wild card….

    ==================

I was curious, so I looked it up…

In the 17 season since the advent of the MLB Wild Card, the team with the 5th best record in the AL had 90 or more wins 7x and less than 90 wins 9x (not counting 1995 when the 5th best team only had 78 wins, because they only played 144 that year).

    btw ~
My M’s would have made the playoffs at least one ‘extra’ time during that stretch (2003) and possibly three more times – depending on how tie-breakers were settled/decided for the 5th best record…
    - 1996, M’s, Red Sox and White Sox all finished with 85 wins
    - 2007, M’s and Tigers finished with 88 wins apiece

Anyone know what the tie-breaker will be for these situations?
    Head-to-head? One game play-in?

  9. spidanyc November 20th, 2011 at 12:13 am

Nunez, Laird (Chipper’s relpacement in a year or two) and Swisher for Jair Jurrjens.

  10. Triple Short of a Cycle November 20th, 2011 at 12:43 am

Jurrjens would not translate well in the AL East.

Cute story about Girardi and his daughter reading lines for an animated movie based on Negron’s book. This is the Yankee part:

“I am extremely proud how our young kids stepped up, and I have a feeling there are going to be more kids that step up, and we need that influx of youth because we have players who have some age,’’ he says. “They are not going to be there forever, so somebody has to step up.’’

Here in Vermont we are very appreciative of Brian Cashman (along with Theo Epstein and Buster Olney) coming here to help the farmers affected by hurricane Irene. It’s wonderful when people can use their prominent position to help others.

Jurjins is an injury risk for sure……but if the Braves would do a package for him with Nunez as the centerpiece then you do without thinking twice about it.

  17. Villa Nova-Ya November 20th, 2011 at 8:04 am

How do you not think twice if he’s an injury risk?

So you give up Nunez, which leaves you with Pena as the backup infielder, you lose whatever else you put in that package, and you may or may not have a healthy starting pitcher?

If Atlanta’s willing ot trade him, that’s a big question mark right there.

  18. Villa Nova-Ya November 20th, 2011 at 8:12 am

    BTW -

    Good morning, blake. :)

  19. austinmac November 20th, 2011 at 8:12 am

Jurrjens fastball dropped two mph last year and he only strikes out five to six per nine innings. I agree he is very questionable going forward, and when was the last time the Braves traded a pitcher who was successful after he left?

  20. Joe from Long Island November 20th, 2011 at 8:14 am

Interesting tidbit about Atlanta wanting Nunez (I guess he’s not so horrible, after all ;) ) –

I’d have to trust the Yanks, Cash and Eppler, to do their due diligence on Jurgens, but I wonder about Hanson, Venters. A big part of the equation here is how the Yanks feel about Pena, Laird to step up and fill that reserve role. Ig they’re counting on Nunez to get over 300 ABs this coming season, in relief of Jeter, Alex, and Robbie, then they better have a plan if he’s not here.

  21. Nick in SF November 20th, 2011 at 8:18 am

You do it ‘cos Jurjins has big upside potential and ‘cos Bob Dylan sang “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”.

Although he was being ironic with that lyric. Hmmmm. Remember when Jeter was on the DL and Nunez was a really hot hitter for a few days? I prefer to think of that more than the errors.

The last time we got a pitcher from Atlanta is another bad memory.

    Japan: yes. Atlanta: no.

  22. Nick in SF November 20th, 2011 at 8:21 am

Solution: new backup SS/2B Prince Fielder (apres fat farm).

  23. blake November 20th, 2011 at 8:28 am

    Villa,

Because I see it as an acceptable risk for the price of Nunez. He’s really good when healthy…..the arm wasn’t the biggest issue for him last year.

You’d have to get a very complete physical of course but Id make that swap. You can find a backup infielder….. I know a lot of folks seea Nunez as an I valuable piece and maybe even the future SS……I see him more as a luxury to have around and honestly I would rather have Jurrgins in the rotation and Pena as the backup than Nunez as the backup……at least Pena catches the ball……JMO

The best way to disabuse people of the notion that Nunez is a future SS is to give Jeter a juicy extension.

Brian Cashman homeless and sleeping in an alley next to Covenant House in Times Square:

    http://www.nypost.com/rw/nypos.....15;300.jpg

He’s lucky he didn’t die from hypothermia or it’s not quite cold enough for him to.

    Enough of Yu Darvish.

History shows Japanese starters are mediocre or crap in MLB, mostly crap, like this:

Hideo Nomo: His best season was his rookie season. Mediocre at best with flashes of brilliance.

Hideki Irabu (RIP) : A bust.

Kei Igawa: A complete and total bust. The highest paid AAA starter in MLB history.

Daisuke Matsuzaka: Better than Irabu, buries Igawa, but not as good as Nomo – a general disappointment. The 2007 Red Sox would’ve won the World Series without him.

Basically, Darvish has to be better than all these guys to be worth the posting fee and contract for him, and history just doesn’t show he would be.

  31. Nick in SF November 20th, 2011 at 8:36 am

Ooooh, double post with variance. Milwaukee is whack.

  32. Villa Nova-Ya November 20th, 2011 at 8:36 am

    Joe from Long Island -

That’s exactly what I meant. It seems like Joe G is talking a lot about giving his regulars more half-days, including Robby, which makes Nunez a major player here. It sounds like they’re planning on giving him a lot of opportunity to play, and they are considering him for outfield work as well. That’s a lot of player to replace. So there has to be a backup plan if they find a deal too enticing to turn down for Nunez.

I’m leery about Jurgens because he had two instances of injury last season, the first was at the beginning of the season, and then, of course, later on. No doubt he is talented, a good pitcher. But the last thing the Yankees need to do is get a guy who might not be able to give them the innings they’re looking for. It’s too much of a risk in my mind. I do admit to being extremely conservative.

If they get Jurgens and he goes down, they have the depth in AAA, I guess, unless some of that depth was also included in a trade to get Jurgens.

And the history with Atlanta pitching is definitely not too good. (Though I’m not sure whether that’s a real concern or just a lot of coincidence.)

  38. Baseball Mogul November 20th, 2011 at 9:04 am

You need a backup that does something at the plate because of who they would be replacing in the lineup, and I think Nunez can be that more consistently. I think the fielding will come. This is not to say he’s untradeable. I’d be leary of Jurrjens too. It’s not just last season- only 40 something starts in two years

  39. blake November 20th, 2011 at 9:07 am

Good morning. Just read that Braves interested in Nunez.
I’m a little nervous when the Braves are willing to trade pitchers or let them go to FA and the Yankees pick them up.

Jaret Wright, Chris Hammond, Kyle Farnsworth, Javier Vazquez

If Martin Prado were included in the deal along with Jair Jurrjens I would feel better, as he can play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and both corner outfield positions.

Maybe a package deal could be worked out.

  41. blake November 20th, 2011 at 9:12 am

“You need a backup that does something at the plate because of who they would be replacing in the lineup, and I think Nunez can be that more consistently.”

Sure….but I think a good starter is more valuable than a backup infielder. That would be as a good return fir Nunez if you we’re going to deal him.

That’s a good idea…….though I can’t imagine the Braves would trade Prado and Jair for Nunez…….it’d take more than that.
