Down a building, then down to Dallas

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 04, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As expected, the Hilton Anatole is massive, and various baseball executives, agents and reporters are already making their way back and forth through the lobby. Things seem pretty quiet for now, especially for the Yankees, whose general manager isn’t even getting to town until tomorrow evening.

The good news is, Cashman has survived yet another Heights & Lights event in Stamford. Dan Barbarisi was there, and reports that Cashman made his way down the Landmark Building and ripped away his elf costume to reveal a Yankees jacket. He did something similar last year.

As you might expect, Cashman was asked about Manny Ramirez — who is apparently trying to be reinstated into Major League Baseball — and Cashman said the Yankees have no interest.

    @Joelsherman1 Joel Sherman
Source tells me #Marlins are over 100M for Reyes, #Mets know it and are out of bidding. Reyes is leaving unless change of heart

  3. blake December 4th, 2011 at 7:37 pm

If they do sign Reyes has it been confirmed that Hanley would accept a move to 3B…..would they shop him?

  4. Stoneburner December 4th, 2011 at 7:39 pm

    They Might Be Giants. . . .

Where would you play Hanley on the Yanks?

  6. LGY December 4th, 2011 at 7:41 pm

    blake

The Hymen says position change, most likely 3B.

  7. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Rogers is going to break Giant hearts. Too much time for him to not do what he does best.

  8. Nick in SF December 4th, 2011 at 7:45 pm

So the Giants can beat the Patriots in Bostonborough, can go toe-to-toe with the Packers, but can also look like crap against mediocre teams.

Does that mean they’re built for the playoffs?

  9. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 7:46 pm

If nothing else, the Giants played the Packers tougher than any other team this year and scared the hell out of them. How many loudmouths and other media will pin this one on Manning. He played Rogers even up.

  10. Pat M. December 4th, 2011 at 7:47 pm

The Packers are a very good football team……

  11. Stoneburner December 4th, 2011 at 7:48 pm

At least still just one game behind the Cowgirls – w/ two games left against them – and one against Washington and the Jets. . . .

  12. LGY December 4th, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Eerily similar to the Giants-Pats game in 07.

Maybe a good omen for Giants fans.

“Where would you play Hanley on the Yanks?”

Well I wasn’t specific ally talking about the Yankees…..but RF.

  14. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Pat, they’re as good as I’ve seen them in years. If they’re lacking anything, it’s a strong, fast back coming out of the backfield. Imagine them with an Adrian Peterson type back there.

  15. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 7:56 pm

  16. DONNYBROOK December 4th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

Reyes is not worth that kinda $$$ in general, and especially with the big dog free agents still available. I’ll believe that suppossed Marlin offer to Reyes when he actually signs. If I’m Reyes and the Marlins make that offer, I sign it ASAP.

  17. kd December 4th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

trade for hanley, make him a right fielder?

sj used to always say that he and jeter/arod were close. i bet jete could have sure he doens’t get lazy out there.

if you can trade for hanley, you really have to look at it

Tough one especially when you think about the Eli pic for seven in the first half. This is a different team then in 2007, the defense was then much stronger. Can’t turn the ball over to the likes of Rogers, Brees, or Brady with time left, it’s a mismatch. I was hoping we’d get to the OT coin toss, at least then I though we had a chance.

  19. Pat M. December 4th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

kd…..I mentioned the very same thing about Hanley the other night if Miami were to sign Reyes…..Leftfield

Nick the games they come to play they are very competitive, like you said the losses to Seattle, SF, and Philly have been killers.

  21. blake December 4th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

LF, RF, 3B, SS……Hanley coukd play a lot of places and the Yankee veterans would like be a very good influence on him……he’s very talented…….its not very realistic though I wouldn’t think.

  22. LGY December 4th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Signing Reyes to trade Hanley would be a downgrade for the Marlins. They are trying to compete heading into their new stadium so I don’t see them having any motivation to move their best player.

    ___________________________________________________________________________

Agree, pin this one on Fenwell the defensive cordinator. We didn’t pressure Rogers enough, he had too much time to pick us apart back there. The TD to Driver should never have happened, that was the big one.

Eli though did put the ball on the ground one time probably costing us 3 points and the pic went for 7. He has to get some heat for those, especially the pic.

  24. kd December 4th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

    sorry pat m,

not trying to steal your thunder….

imagine him batting 2nd for the pinstripes though

  25. kd December 4th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

    blake,

if you’re going to part with prospects, hanley is as good enough of a reason as there is out there

he could be an offensive force in the outfield for years

  26. dan l December 4th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

There is no way any player like Hanley is coming to NY if you read Joel Sherman this morning. The Yankees want to be under the 189 million threshold set for 2014.

As for Reyes if he can keep his batting average well above .300 for the life of this contract he’ll be worth every penny.

  27. blake December 4th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

“Signing Reyes to trade Hanley would be a downgrade for the Marlins.”

Yea I agree…..unkesstry there was something brewing behind the scenes where they just decided to move him. Stanton is the future face of that franchise

  28. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Until Hanley Ramirez is convinced that he is not now nor ever has been a very good shortstop, he’s going to be an issue where ever he plays at whatever position it is. He should give the team the same half-hearted effort that Alfonso soriano has given after moving to the outfield from 2nd base.

  30. DONNYBROOK December 4th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

I agree with Dan regarding the $189 Mill\2014. Any immediate $$$ laid out should be earmarked with Darvish in mind. Hanley would fit with Jeet switching positions down-the-road, but monetarily with the $189 Mill\2014 in mind forget it. Darvish would be the last big money outlay till 2014 if I was looking at that $189 Mill\2014

  31. Pat M. December 4th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

kd…..No thunder at all, at least now we can share the barbs from our astute colleagues here at the LoHud

  32. blake December 4th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Why would you want to make a last big FA signing be a guy that’s never played in the big leagues before?

  33. Pat M. December 4th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

When I read Sherman’s contribution to the world of sports journalism this morning the first thing I thought of was the sale of the NY Yankees…..

  34. kd December 4th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

    pat m,

i saw your post a week or so ago about cito culver, great news that some scouts see him ready in three years.

do you scout buddies see mason williams and slade heathcott in the same light?

  35. LGY December 4th, 2011 at 8:36 pm

Bowden and a couple others saying the Marlins are not done shopping even with Reyes apparently on board.

    Buerhle still a target.

  36. blake December 4th, 2011 at 8:37 pm

    Pat M,

Do the scouts you talk to think Culver will hit?

  37. blake December 4th, 2011 at 8:39 pm

Marlins making me believe……still think the Pujols thing was for total show though.

  38. dan l December 4th, 2011 at 8:47 pm

It’s very unlikely that Culver will be ready in 3 years. Switch hitters take more time development wise then if he were just batting from one side of the plate. He might be ready defensively but why push him when it’s very likely the Yankees will still have Nunez?

  39. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Miami, like Tampa is never going to have that great following. The majority of them are transplants and follow their hometown teams. Maybe they’ll follow them for a short time, but, it won’t last. The money that’s their and it’s old Yankee money. They’re either hometown fans or not baseball fans at all. If they think they can survive off of the Latin following, they’ll fail and within two-three years, Loria will sell off the stars.

  40. Pat M. December 4th, 2011 at 8:54 pm

kd & Blake…..Cito’s name came up and one club’s scouting evaluator said he could be in the bigs in 3 years which would be 2015……dan I, what you say does make sense however this is what was told to me and a few other guys……

  41. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 8:56 pm

Heathcott is too reckless to continue playing center field. He’s going to need to be moved to a corner. He’s a big kid and leg problems will most likely follow him around. Right now, the shoulder issues are a bigger problem.

  42. blake December 4th, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Wilson Not A Top Target For Nationals
By Zach Links [December 4 at 7:42pm CST]

7:42pm: Pitcher C.J. Wilson is not a top target for the Nationals, tweets MLB.com’s Bill Ladson. One person told Ladson that the left-hander isn’t really on the club’s radar screen.

It’ll be curious to see if the Yanks match the reported 3 offers to Buehrle of 3 years and $42 mil. Nobody has yet given him the no-trade that he supposedly asked for. Will that be the turning point?

  46. blake December 4th, 2011 at 9:18 pm

3/42 is too much for Buehrle if you’re the Yankees….he’s not enough of an upgrade over what they have to warrant 14 million per year.

  49. m December 4th, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I thought the Nationals were the front runner? All kinds of things getting floated and then getting shot down.

    Buerhle for 3 years? Yikes.

Marlins going to pay all that money to Reyes to move off SS. Sounds like a plan!

  53. Giuseppe Franco December 4th, 2011 at 9:44 pm

If there’s any truth to that Reyes deal to the Marlins I have no doubt it will be a long term flop and the Mets will be better off for it.

New yard or not, the Marlins can’t afford to make such a mistake.

  54. Giuseppe Franco December 4th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

That Kenny Williams is a card I tell you.

  55. Dionysius Thelxinoe December 4th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Hanley trade not so far fetched. Marlins owner is still a cheapskate, this offseason notwithstanding. He cannot be thrilled with the idea of paying $15M for even one season to an underachieving (maybe soon to be ex-) SS.

If they sign Reyes, I say Hanley’s history.

  56. LGY December 4th, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Kenny probably thinks Cash owes him one from the Swisher deal.

  57. m December 4th, 2011 at 9:48 pm

I don’t want Danks at all. I’m sure he’s a very good pitcher, but lots of reasons to shoot down that deal.

People threw out his H/IP stats. Williams is overcompensating after giving up on Swisher (how is that one our fault?). He’ll likely be a rental. Bad vibe all around.

    Pass.

“Under no uncertain terms will we move you off SS, Hanley.”

  61. blake December 4th, 2011 at 9:51 pm

As LGY pointed out….if they sign Reyes and then trade Hanley then their team is worst for it unless the return fills several other holes. It may depend on how well Hanley takes changing positions….if they think he’s going to pout then maybe they try to move him now for the biggest return possible (though hes coming off a bad year)

  62. Benny Blanco December 4th, 2011 at 9:51 pm

    LGY,

How does the performance training center (API) that hughes attended help him as a pitcher? What does that facility specialize in? Do they help pitchers with their mechanics? Just curious.

  63. GreenBeret7 December 4th, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Maybe the Marlins trade Ramirez to the Mets for David Wright.

Dionysius Thelxinoe…….For me I think the most pressing issue in Miami regarding Hanley is Ozzie ….It’s his ballclub and clubhouse and there’ room for only one ego and it’s not their shortstops…..I can see him being shipped out of South Beach if Reyes is inked…….A new Sherriff is in town….We’ll see what happens……Say no to Beuhrle

  66. Nilsson December 4th, 2011 at 10:02 pm

Yanks practically gave away Jose Contreras to the ChiSox. He carried the staff on his back to the 2005 title. Williams shouldn’t feel so cheated by the Swisher deal.

  67. Dionysius Thelxinoe December 4th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Blake, Hanley is already on record as being willing to move from SS if they sign Reyes.

  68. 86w183 December 5th, 2011 at 8:14 am

Hanley is far from on board with the switch. Read the South Florida papers and you’ll see they know they have to finesse the issue with him and are somewhat anxious about it.
