Random Yankees sightings on Day Two

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 06, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Late this morning, Jean Afterman walked quickly through the Hilton hotel lobby. Several minutes later, Billy Eppler came through. Several minutes after that, it was Brian Cashman’s turn. Not one of them stopped to talk — not that I saw, anyway — and Cashman came through with a cell phone to his ear.

Unless big things are happening behind closed doors, that’s the extent of the Yankees action today.

Random Yankees sighting of the day: Greg Golson is at the trade show helping to promote the bat company that he uses. His company makes all of its bats by hand, one-by-one. Golson said there are three guys who make the bats, including one who was making bats in front of everyone. There were flakes of wood flying everywhere.

For what it’s worth, Golson said he hasn’t stopped hitting since the end of the season. Said he took maybe a week and a half “off,” but kept getting the itch to swing a bat.

Non-Yankees news centers on the Blue Jays trade for Sergio Santos and the ongoing Albert Pujols situation, but things still seem fairly slow.

I’m not sure if I’m a bat company I want Greg Golson to be my spokesperson…kind of like having Adam Dunn promoting a video teaching defense.

I personally would not trade Gardner .. . he’s a young . speedy , cost effective . GOLD GLOVE caliber outfielder with a decent bat …

If he’s dealt.. .. it better be for a sure lock number 2 .

    —————

He’s not all that young and his bat is not all that decent. Other than that…

Kenny Williams is trying to maintain some diginity, but he’s still doing a darn good impersonation of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow.

One word for Nick Johnson-Bionics. :)

    Patrick,

You mean you’d trade Brandon Laird for Justin Upton? Come on….huge Overpay ;)

Chip – it’s pretty hard to swing a .350 OBP as “not decent”.

    Repost:

    J. Alfred Prufrock December 6th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
Bret, Upton is more talented, but I wonder if he’ll ever put it all together.

If someone like Long could help him be more level and shorter to the ball, he might take off. He’s already one of the most natural CF’s in the game – nobody makes those running, over the shoulder bread basket catches like Upton can, and he’s got to be the most effortless guy out there.

The problem is, sometimes his “effort” (quite apart from a sheer athleticism that makes him look “effortless) takes a mini vacation; he actually seems uninterested at times. I don’t know what that’s about, but if you want to take a gamble strictly on talent, Upton would be classic high risk/high reward.

  10. LGY December 6th, 2011 at 2:22 pm

Signing BJ Upton to a long term deal doesn’t sound like a particularly smart idea.

  11. Chip December 6th, 2011 at 2:23 pm

The Giants are supposedly open to dealing Keppinger and Andres Torres – depending on cost (obviously) – I would like to pick up both those guys.

Keppinger would be a nice addition to the bench if they can’t bring back Chavez and Torres would certainly be an upgrade over Singleton as a fourth OF and could give the Yankees some more latitude in making a move.

  12. Pat M. December 6th, 2011 at 2:23 pm

If the Yanks want to make an investment that is non-taxable with a greater return and for far less dough….Sign the two Cuban outfielders…..Darvish is going to cost huge money and this is the last bite at the apple…..Darvish looks very impressive but he’s going to cost way more than Dice K ….Does anybody here thinks he’ll be as good as El Duque ????

  13. Irreverent Discourse December 6th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Torres can’t be a Yankee starting OF though, he’s worse than Gardner by your own standards.

  14. LGY December 6th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

If you traded Gritner for Upton, you’d have to fill left AND right field at the end of 2012.

With Kemp off the market and no upper level OF in the system, pretty terrible scenario.

  15. Jerkface December 6th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

I would – it’s the last year we can do something like this, and while we don’t have an immediate need, we do have a gap time waiting for the likes of Williams/Santana…

  20. blake December 6th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

    Patrick,

Id probably open up the farm for real as well there.

  21. Jerkface December 6th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

El Duque and Darvish are different types of pitchers, but I’ll say this of Darvish. He was once injured and couldnt reliably throw the ball with his regular mechanics. He had a stress fracture in his throwing hand and lower body pain. He changed his mechanics for 1 game and won it. It was the world series of Japan and it was the only game his team won. Dude is beast.

    ————–

    Two issues:

    1. He’s more streaky than good

    2. If his only asset is his ability to run then he needs to be around .370 ala Kenny Lofton/Brett Butler

    Again – I’m not saying he’s a bad player – just overvalued.

I said he’d be an upgrade over Singleton. And when I say he would offer up some latitude for other moves, it goes back to the thought that if you’re not 100% sold on Cespedes right out of the gate – you can still sign him and let Torres play for a month while Cespedes gets acclimated in extended spring.

  24. Irreverent Discourse December 6th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

whether you believe that or not it’s immaterial to the point. A one-trick pony entering his 30s is not something that you want to pay significant money for.

  37. Irreverent Discourse December 6th, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Chip – Naturally his value will decrease as they start paying him more… we are all in agreement that Gardner is nearly finished product. You are just on the other side of the fence in Gardner’s value to the club. How much longer is Jeter really going to lead off? Gardner is the perfect player to step into that role.

I’m OK with him on the team for anything up to around $10-12m/year until he’s 32. He’s not even a FA until he’s 31. It’s unlikely he will ever see a contract from the Yankees, just lots of arbitration $’s. He’ll never touch double digit money in arbitration, so what’s the risk of holding on to this guy?

  38. DONNYBROOK December 6th, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Buzz in Dallas seems to be all about Marlins, Pujols. One NL exec just asked me via text “are you hearing what I am? Pujols, 10/250, Miami.”

You can considerl the 6% state income tax vs no income tax in FL a hometown discount for the Cards but that would be alot of money to leave on the table if the Cards don’t raise their offer.

    ————-

I don’t know if that’s true – a lot is going to depend on how they draw and the moves they’re making at least should generate interest from the fan base. Every team gets a bump from a new stadium (except the Yankees) once that wears off you have to have a reason for the fans to show up – fielding a team that has three tremendous talents (not to mention Stanton and LoMo) is a heck of a start.

By the way – if the Marlins do sign Pujols it means that the Mets get a 4th round pick for Reyes…giggle.

  41. blake December 6th, 2011 at 2:46 pm

10/250 with that tax situation would be tough for anybody to turn down…..loyalty to st. Louis or not.

  42. Jerkface December 6th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Donnybrook……Look at their system, they have pitching, pitching , pitching….What they don’t really have are Outfielders……I’ve also mentioned a month ago that they should get another starter as well as an outfielder to upgrade Gardner…..Now 2 high end , very high outfield prospects have fallen into their laps, don’t you think it’s where the money should too……

Yup – if you’re not even going to make him an offer then why not trade him in July?

  51. spidanyc December 6th, 2011 at 2:52 pm

According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, a trade that would potentially send left-hander Matt Thornton to the Braves is “picking up steam.”
The White Sox unloaded closer Sergio Santos to Toronto on Tuesday and may now be looking at other moves as part of an offseason fire-sale. Thornton, 35, posted a 3.32 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 59 2/3 innings this past year. He’s owed $12 million over the next two seasons.

    ————————————————————————————————————

Don’t the Braves have 2 really good lefty relievers?

Mason Williams, Nunez, maybe a trade for a Gardner-type player to provide some speed and play some defense?

Maybe Russell Martin if he is still here?

Report: Nats have asked Yankees about Gardner
    By Mike Axisa
Via MASN, the Nationals have asked the Yankees about the availability of Brett Gardner, but were rebuffed. Washington has been looking for a long-term center fielder/leadoff type, a role Gardner fills perfectly. The problem is they don?t have any decent pitching to offer the Yankees since Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann are presumably off limits. John Lannan and Ross Detwiler are nothing worth getting excited over, nor are they an upgrade over what the Yankees already have stashed in Triple-A.

“What did I miss? Where did the Marlins get all this money?????”

Ahh they basically got a brand new stadium for free which will translate into a massive increase in attendance. They have also been getting millions in revenue sharing every year from teams like the Yankees

    Haha so true

I think the Marlins have financed their team in unsavory ways but I admire the intelligence. Loria, Beinfest, etc are smart, they kept the payroll super low while building a base of good young players then when the new stadium is ready to provide an influx of money they open the checkbooks and sign a ton of good players.

    Irreverent Disclosure -

You really have to wonder about the fan base there. Will a new domed stadium, a new name that reflects where they play, and a couple of marquee players guarantee that the people will show up consistently?

I would suspect that if they sign Pujols, they will get a bump in attendance. But will the bump stay? Or will it be a passing fancy?

If they win the WS next season, will people say they bought it?

If they win the WS next season, will they dismantle the players w/o NTC (everyone but Albert)?

Is the low attendance anything to do with winning, or the players, or baseball? Or is it more to do with they don’t have the fanbase to begin with?

I’m rambling, but the Marlins do not have the best history.

  111. LGY December 6th, 2011 at 3:31 pm

    Chip – Yeah I agree

Cash has fallen over himself everytime he mentions Noesi in public. Even Gammons was on MLBN yesterday and said Cash told him in September that Noesi is next year’s Nova and could be even better than him. Everytime he has gotten an opportunity, he has genuflected about Noesi

All fine and well… except he probably doesn’t even have a realistic shot to make the rotation out of ST… ahead of the likes of Hughes and Burnett who Cash said he sees rounding out his rotation (also Girardi mentioned how Garcia doesn’t have to compete for his spot this year). So this super pitcher that he has is regulated to an insurance policy.

If it isn’t a negotiating ploy, I have no idea what it is.

Era+ has been better than any trade target mentioned over the last two years……you don’t give up too much for him because he does have some warts…..but he’s young, cheap, has a great hook, and has upside.

I would be happy getting Gio but I wouldn’t overpay for him, he’s not an ace.

  189. 4time December 6th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

    They can’t even afford Kuroda?

    Great to hear.

  190. blake December 6th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

If Beane trades Gio then he’s trading 4 years of one of his best starters……he’s nit trading that for 4 years of 28 year old Gardner…….he’s going to want more control and more upside than that.

  191. Chip December 6th, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Again – with Gio or Kuroda – who are you exiling from the rotation to make this guy fit?

Hughes? You’re going to dump a 25 year old that you touted as a future ace for a 25 year old who might not be any better than him or a 37 year old?

You can’t do anything with Burnett. There’s been talk of eating his contract and then dealing him, but let’s say the get is Kuroda – you’re talking about eating nearly $32 mil and then spending another $12 mil on Kuroda – that’s $44 mil for one spot in the rotation!

Unless you’re making this pick up and then think you’re going to get some huge package back for Hughes – it makes no sense.

The only guys I would bump Hughes for are Darvish or Danks – get one of those guys and I would turn around and deal Hughes for a prospect OF or something.

  192. blake December 6th, 2011 at 4:49 pm

I would be happy getting Gio but I wouldn’t overpay for him, he’s not an ace.”

Nah he’s not……but he’s 25 and if he improved his command than his upside could be frontline……I wouldn’t trade too much fir him but how terrible he is is greatly overstated.

  193. Patrick December 6th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

You could always dump Hughes into the bullpen or cut Freddy Garcia.

  194. Stoneburner December 6th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Oh Gio – come to the Yankees. Larry R as your pitching coach helping with your command – and you can improve your fastball/slider combo by learning from the best – C.C.

Hughes? You’re going to dump a 25 year old that you touted as a future ace for a 25 year old who might not be any better than him or a 37 year old?

I am as weary of Gio coming to the AL East as anyone on here, just read my past posts about it, but come on. Gio vs Hughes??? Hughes, whom I love, has not done anything. He was very good in the bullpen, and had 1 good year starting. Gio put together 2 years better than Hughes 1 back to back. I think the Yankees would replace Hughes with Gio 10 out of 10 times. I don’t think they will because of cost, and likely the same weariness I have of him coming over to the AL east which goes against the high cost of acquiring him.

    Amazing use of resources.

Nah he’s not……but he’s 25 and if he improved his command than his upside could be frontline……I wouldn’t trade too much fir him but how terrible he is is greatly overstated.

Well the perception of him as being “bad” has persisted because most prospect gurus pegged him as a back of the rotation guy and he had bad results in the majors in 2008 and 2009. I think that perception has mostly disappeared because he’s had good 2010 and 2011 years (despite having a significant home/away split). And he’s shown an improvement in bb/9 and k/9

I’d take him but I’d prefer Darvish

    Moving around the rotation options:

    - Simply dump AJ. God they should do this anyways! Salary dump him somewhere.
    - Push Hughes to the pen/long man.
    - Push Garcia to long man
    - Trade one of Hughes/Nova

  205. Eroc December 6th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Danks, Gio, and Kuroda are all better pitchers than Hughes (and Burnett).

  206. DaSaint007 December 6th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Yanks should offer Buehrle 3 yr, $45M with no-trade clause. Add that arm.

Cash should consider trading Soriano. There’s enough depth to replace a 7th inning guy.

Want a real upgrade of RF – target Justin Upton.

  207. Jerkface December 6th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

And he’s shown an improvement in bb/9

Its easy to improve from such astronomically high starting points :)

So you think the Yankees should be satisfied with a rotation that includes 1 ace and 4 back of the rotation starters? If they can upgrade and get a true #2 they will do it and not look back. The presence of Hughes, Burnett, Garcia and even Nova will not stop the Yankees from getting another pitcher for the rotation.

Why would you bump Hughes for Danks but not Gio or Kuroda, when those two are better pitchers than Danks???

    ———–

    Because I trust Danks.

I do not trust a guy who has never in his career pitched a meaningful game and who goes from being a great pitcher at home in one of the most pitcher friendly parks in the league to an average or slightly worse than average pitcher on the road.

Nor am I dumping a 25 year old for a 37 year old – that’s not how you help the long term future of your club. I’m also not convinced that Kuroda can pitch in the American League let alone the American League East – how many times do you need to be burned by an NL pitcher before you stop coveting them?

  211. Melk Man December 6th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Allow the circumstances to dictate who gets cut/demoted/sent down/traded, etc.

Shoot first, ask questions later. Don’t back out of trade discussions for a good pitcher because of the presence of the immortal Phil Hughes, Freddy Garcia, Nova, or Burnett. None of those guys are better than Garza, Gio, Danks, Kuroda,

They’re not going to move out Nova after the year he had last year – at least not at the start. They’re not cutting Garcia a week after giving him a 5 mil contract and they’re not eating $32 million of AJ Burnett’s contract even if they could find a team that had use for a 35 year old pitcher with zero consistancy.

  213. DaSaint007 December 6th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

The Yankees biggest resource is cash. Lots of it. It comes with no strings attached. Use it to acquire the FA arm that fits: Buehrle.

Save the remaining resources – expiring contracts and young talent – for other areas of need: RF

  214. GreenBeret7 December 6th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

This might end all of the Gio Gonzalez to NY chatter once and for all. They want young, upside outfielders in the deal, and that doesn’t mean Gardner. There none in the Yankee system and few available anywhere else, even in 3 or 4 team deals.

“•The Athletics are looking for young, high-upside outfielders in any Gio Gonzalez trade, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Yankees may have to consider a three-team deal if they want to acquire the lefty, since they don’t have any outfielders in the high minors that fit that bill”

Can you tell me that Kuroda is going to come here and not poop the bed like almost every other NL pitcher the Yankees have brought in over the last decade?

If you can’t tell me either of those things for certain then you can’t tell me that they represent clear upgrades over Phil Hughes who has shown that when he’s healthy he can pitch and win here.

  226. Irreverent Discourse December 6th, 2011 at 5:10 pm

At no point during his Career has Hughes walked as many guys as GioVERRATED does. There is no clear upgrade there. I would still peg Hughes to have the better career going forward.

  227. LGY December 6th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

    Chip

You are including Gio’s road stats from when he was a terrible pitcher in general his first two seasons which is a completely unfair way to look at it.

The last two seasons on the road: 191 IP, 3.77 ERA

And just writing off NL pitchers completely??? Come on now. Kuroda is a really good pitcher.

  228. m December 6th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

I would have liked Kuroda over Freddie. Kuroda doesn’t fit the bill of a clear #2 in the AL East. I’m not very in love with the idea of Kuroda.

The fact that we don’t have an OF that Oakland is looking for is not an impediment here. Would they like Heyward? (not sure if he’s on the block, just going on conversations we’ve had here) You could send Nunez and catching or whatever they need to Atlanta. You could send pitching to Oakland.

Yeah, show the stat lines for Javy Vazquez, Denny Neagle, Jeff Weaver, Kevin Brown, etc before coming to the Yankees. They all looked freaken unbelievable. Tell me again how those deals worked out…Back when the deal was made Jeff Weaver looked like a clear upgrade over Ted Lilly and Kevin Brown looked like a clear upgrade over Jeff Weaver – both times those deals ended badly for the Yankees.

  230. m December 6th, 2011 at 5:13 pm

Gio walks a lot of guys? Not good in the AL East.
Danks gives up a lot of hits? Not good in the AL East.

Like Gio much more than Danks, pitcher friendly park and all.

  231. Chip December 6th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

I will sum up my feelings this way:

Saying Gio is a clear upgrade over Hughes is akin to saying Jeff Weaver was a clear upgrade over Lilly – the stats might back you up, but I ain’t buying.

blake – GioVERRATED has never walked less than 4guys per 9 in his career, minors or majors. it’s not a matter of that he’s not developing, it’s that… this is the type of pitcher he is. it took him 3 seasons to get back down to his 4 BB/9. Think about that for a second.

Gonzalez clearly has a better track record than Hughes. His uncertainty in performance is less than Hughes.

On the flip side – Gio will cost talent to acquire. And it will be expensive.

    So the question is whether:

(Gio + talent + Gio’s uncertainty in performance)=(Hughes + uncertainty in Hughes performance)

And of all those variables, “talent” is the key and the one that is really going to drive whether or not that equation is true.

  249. disco stu December 6th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

For all the Gio Gonzalez naysayers, didnt Al Leiter spend the better part of his 20′s struggling with control issues and then settled into the big game pitcher he became as he matured both physicially and mentally when he reached his 30′s?

I dont think that at 26 you can say anyone is a finished product and/or has little to no room for improvement. And as someone posted earlier, maybe someone like Larry Rothchild could be exactly what Gio needs to gain better command of the strike zone and become an even better pitcher than he is now.

Gio is only 26, left handed, throws hard, had a really good strikeout/innings ratio last season … at the very least, those are attributes to build on … no?

  250. m December 6th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

    Hughes is a 25-year old 18-game winner. He’s 36-23 4.46 ERA lifetime.
    Gio Gonzalez is a 25-year old who’s won 15 and 16 games the last 2 years. He’s 38-32 3.93 ERA lifetime.

It’s not as clear cut as it seems. Hughes has the potential, and 2012 may be the year to return to the esteem expected of him. If I were Cashman, I keep him.

  253. m December 6th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

The success of the DET/ARZ/NYY trade might open up more possibilities.

Once GM’s bring down their ridiculous expectations, we should see some movement on the trade front. Maybe not involving the Yankees, but at least something will happen. Maybe after the big FA names come off the board.

So I read that the Mariners are the front runners for Fielder. Really?

  254. DaSaint007 December 6th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Now if I can get Gio without giving up a top prospect, maybe I do it.

  255. Chip December 6th, 2011 at 5:48 pm

    Patrick-

You’re an idiot. There are obvious exceptions to every rule. Just as I would trade for Felix despite him pitching in a huge park and under no pressure I would trade for Linc. You also have basic reading issues as I specified that I wouldn’t trade for an OLD nl pitcher.

But hey, if you want to buy high on Gio or spend 12 nil on a 37 year old Kuroda what do I care? You don’t get to make these decisions any more than I do. I will sleep well knowing Cash is smarter than that.
