Was Jeter’s 3,000th the year’s greatest sports moment?

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 09, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Sports Illustrated is letting fans vote on the Best Sports Moment of 2011. There are 15 candidates, and Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit is one of them.

It got my vote.

Go to SI’s Facebook page to vote. There are two baseball moments in the mix: Jeter’s 3,000th and the Cardinals unexpected World Series run. The other candidates range from the NFL to the NBA dunk contest to professional surfing.

I think it won’t be much over 100 total. You could spread it over 6 years and it’s about 17m/yr, only half of which counts against the salary cap er luxury tax threshold. With a 6 year contract Yu is still only 30 in the last year.

And adjustment period is wild speculation at best. Kuroda pitched just fine his first year.

  2. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Kuroda pitched just fine his first year.

He’s also a ground ball pitcher not looking to nibble for strikeouts. He shouldn’t be walking anyone.

All of the money still comes out of the pocket of the team, regardless of the lux-tax hit. Any team posting a bid will be considering all dollars spent as tied to the player.

Rays signed Moore to an 8 year 39.75 mil contract. Why does all these guys take hometown discounts (i.e. rays and sox) and we have break the bank for our players? Not sure what Moore was thinking. He could have gotten much MOORE in the open market. He will be 30 when he hits free agency.

  7. Nilsson December 9th, 2011 at 6:05 pm

While it was great to see Jeter get to 3000, it was more of a milestone even though it was on a homer.

As a fan of all three (NFL, NFL, MLB), nothing was more dramatic than the World Series. The epic Game 6, Nolan’s facial expressions, LaRussa’s bullpen usage, thermal infrared replays, … it had it all.

  8. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:11 pm

    Funny…

On January 13, 2009, Uehara signed a two-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles. He started the 2009 season as the number two starter behind ace Jeremy Guthrie.[2] He made his big league debut on April 8 against the New York Yankees. He walked the first batter he saw in regular season play, Derek Jeter.

He was good though… he was also an IFA when he signed.

  9. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:13 pm

I vote for the finale to the RedSox collapse as the moment of the year… 20 minutes of baseball where Papelbon blew a game and ruined a season followed by Longoria hitting a walkoff HR to make the postseason…

that was the greatest moment of the year…

Rays signed Moore to an 8 year 39.75 mil contract. Why does all these guys take hometown discounts (i.e. rays and sox) and we have break the bank for our players? Not sure what Moore was thinking. He could have gotten much MOORE in the open market. He will be 30 when he hits free agency.
    —————

That’s easy to explain. The Yankees first of all don’t extend their players. They’re in the position to resign their guys when they want, no will out bid them significantly.

Second, it’s greatly within Moore’s interest to take that extension. He’s very young. He hasn’t even pitched a full season, or even a full month yet. A lot of things can happen to a young pitcher. Take the safe money now while it’s on the table, and wait it out for the next big pay day. Those contracts are win-win, and both sides assume a little risk.

  16. RadioKev December 9th, 2011 at 6:23 pm

And I cried when Jeter hit that home run. It was definitely magical.

The World Series was also very impressive this season. I suspect Cardinals fans would disagree that Jeter’s 3000th hit was the greatest.

  17. pat December 9th, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Personal milestones that are not historic are usually important moments to those closest to the person more than greatest moments.

  18. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Jeter passing Gherig was a bigger deal to me (not just because I was there)…

3000 is just a round number. You either have the most hits, or you don’t.

  19. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:36 pm

When something like a 3000 or a 600 comes around I’m happier that the fuss will be over and the player can get back to a normal routine :)

Just kidding. Hopefully BobKlap’s eye is looking better these days after the beaning.

  22. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:41 pm

The Yankees first of all don’t extend their players. They’re in the position to resign their guys when they want, no will out bid them significantly.

I expect that this will change soon since they can’t rely on another FA to be there anymore. They will need to have players locked up early, not necessarily cheap… but early.

  23. Yank 97 December 9th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

Another shrewd move by the Rays to sign Matt Moore to an extension. What a well-run organization, sucks that are in our division.

  24. Baseball Mogul December 9th, 2011 at 6:49 pm

‘Why does all these guys take hometown discounts (i.e. rays and sox) and we have break the bank for our players?’

    —————————————–

The Yankees have gotten good value from Cano’s contract since they extended him. They may pay for it after 2013 though…

  25. pat December 9th, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Only a shrewd move if Moore has a few good years.

He looks like a great talent but a significant injury or a DFA could turn a shrewd move into a bad investment quickly.

  26. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Yes, it’s “good business” for the Rays to do this but, is it unusual business? I would think teams try to get young stud players to sign deals like this all the time… wouldn’t you?

I don’t understand why Moore would sign that contract. Well, I do… uncertainty of career and injury and blah blah blah… yeah… I get that. 8 years though? That’s crazy…

  27. Irreverent Discourse December 9th, 2011 at 6:53 pm

Technically the Yankees contract with Cano was the same, signed through age 30.

There is no doubt what-so-ever they will pick up his option in 2013 for $15m… unless he agrees to a cheap 4 year extension in exchange for dropping the option… that would be a sweet deal.

  28. LGY December 9th, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Only a shrewd move if Moore has a few good years.

It’s only 14 mill guaranteed. Just one good year and it’s pretty much worth it.

  29. Nick in SF December 9th, 2011 at 7:11 pm

Does Moore get an opt-out if they move to Charlotte?

  30. Baseball Mogul December 9th, 2011 at 7:14 pm

unless he agrees to a cheap 4 year extension in exchange for dropping the option… that would be a sweet deal.

    ——————————————-

That would be sweet. But… Cano’s having switched to Boras may very well mean he’s looking to free agency, possibly only to drive the price up on the Yankees. Hopefully, he puts up another Cano-like season and next year at this time they’re looking to lock him up.

  31. pat December 9th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

“It’s only 14 mill guaranteed. Just one good year and it’s pretty much worth it.”

Maybe, I reserve calling it shrewd until they get something of value in return. They could have had that one good year at $500,000 too and that would definitely have been worth it. You hit on some and miss on some. Kazmir contract was more gamble than shrewd.

  32. Nick in SF December 9th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Yanks can post Cano to the Taiwan league.

Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Athletics will also likely receive right-hander Ryan Cook from the Diamondbacks as part of the Trevor Cahill deal.
Oakland will receive Cook, Jarrod Parker and Collin Cowgill in exchange for Cahill and Craig Breslow. Cook, 24, had an ugly 7.04 ERA in 12 appearances with Arizona this season, but profiles as a pretty nice relief prospect. Still, we figured Oakland would aim higher with the third piece, perhaps asking for either left-hander David Holmberg or left-hander Patrick Corbin. They obviously did well to get Parker and Cowgill should start in their outfield right away, but this is a disappointing return.

    —————————————————————————————————–

Parker is the Diamondbacks #4 best prospect, while the other two aren’t even top 10. Beane hates the Yankees!!

  35. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 7:24 pm

My Dark horse to land twirling Darvish.

    The Nats. They have money.

Pair him up with Strasburg and you have a Dynamic duo.

And one hell of a draw.

12 Rule 5 (Major League phase) picks (NYYs had 2)

    AAA Phase 22 picks…Yankees 0

    AA Phase 2 yankees 0

    mtu – hi there.

i think they go for both cubans. that’s an easy call. darvish? that’s a tough one. very tough.

  44. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 7:40 pm

    Joe-

I hope we get at least one.

That’s an area of need for us.

The Darvish call is above my pay grade.

  45. GreenBeret7 December 9th, 2011 at 7:41 pm

I think NYYs will go for Jorge Soler first and work from there.

  46. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 7:43 pm

    GB-

Would Soler be able to start off at AA, or would he have to go to high A first ?

  47. Baseball Mogul December 9th, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I think NYYs will go for Jorge Soler first and work from there.

    —————————–

Agreed. If they are uncertain about laying out $100M for Darvish, they’re probably also uncertain about doing so for Cespedes… and with good reason. Soler is younger, cheaper, and at a position where they need depth.

  48. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 7:50 pm

    I have a question.

    It concerns GGBG.

Does anyone think he can stay in PS as an everyday Of’er if he hits .260 again ?

  49. Jerkface December 9th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Does anyone think he can stay in PS as an everyday Of’er if he hits .260 again ?

Yes, as long as he keeps playing ‘best in the game’ defense, steals bases, and gets on base. Despite hitting .260 he was one of our best Postseason bats.

  50. ctyankeefan. December 9th, 2011 at 7:52 pm

MLBTR says Saunders could be traded. I wonder if the yanks have any interest. His numbers havent really been good, but I just remember how he used to baffle us as an angel not too long ago.

  51. Jerkface December 9th, 2011 at 7:53 pm

Joe Saunders. I wonder if the yanks have any interest

    Hopefully none.

  52. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 7:53 pm

    JF-

Thank you for the opinion but I have my doubts.

Perhaps if he can keep his OBP up.

Also, he might progress again next season.

Would you consider trading him now while his value is still high ?

  53. Jerkface December 9th, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Would you consider trading him now while his value is still high ?

Yes but it depends on what comes back. The return would have to be good, because right now I think Gardner is too important for the teams ability to win games due to his defense being otherworldly compared to the alternatives.

Gardner is a player I can see sticking on the yankees until free agency, then being allowed to go elsewhere.

  54. Jerkface December 9th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

I honestly dont think the Yankees care enough about batting average only to evaluate a player on that. I think they care mostly about winning games. Obviously they love russel martin and that guy hit .100 for like 3 months.

  55. GreenBeret7 December 9th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

    MTU,

Soler is about 19 years old, so, I’d guess he starts in Tampa and NYYs hope to move him fast if he produces. Charleston has a load of young outfielder on the way, among them is Mason Williams.

  56. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

    JF-

Just wondered. Some would not even consider it.

    I would consider it.

In fact I would consider trading just about anyone other than Montero and Banuelos.

  57. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 8:00 pm

    Gb-

Thanks. Maybe 1/2 a season at Tampa and 1/2 atTtrenton if everything went swimmingly well.

    He is very young.

  58. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

    JF-

I understand the combination that D and speed brings but a .260 avg., with no power is a little hard to stomach.

Especially if GGBG doesn’t get that OBP up to where it needs to be.

    I hope he does.

  59. GreenBeret7 December 9th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

MTU, if he signs on, he’ll be in the first wave of good young outfielders along with Santana, Heathcott, Williams and possibly Murphy and a few others to follow.

  60. MTU December 9th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

    GB-

That’s good because we might need them.

Swisher might disappear after this season, and I’m a little concerned about GGBG sticking too.

I was hoping we might get Kemp but that’s gone.

Williams is getting rave reviews. Let’s see if he continues to shine.

P.S. I know this sounds crazy but I always thought Cano would make a really good corner Of’er. he’s got the arm and is crazy good at shagging flies. Speed is the only concern.

  61. GreenBeret7 December 9th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Williams is like Banuelos. When his name is requested in trades, the talks stop. Regardless of what people yammer about, Montero is in that same area unless it’s for the best talent out there.

I’m officially sick of the Rays Jedi Mind tricking these naive youngsters into these contracts……the Yankees really should consider following their lead though in certain cases…..because their policy of no extensions during contracts no longer fits their business model IMO….they work off a budget now….so they should look to save money where they can.

Its good to be multi-dimensional. Gardner helps the Yankees with not only his defense, but his speed on offense. He’s still relatively young and cheap.

I have been critical of him in the past. But I think he might surprise some people next year. Being smart about being more aggressive is going to help. Personally I hope he’s been watching Tony Gwynn film all winter.

I think you give Gardner another year.

I didn’t realize Moore was an 8th round pick. I say the Yankees should figure out what the Rays are doing scouting-wise and development wise. It’s really amazing how many hits they’ve had on pitchers. Or maybe it’s the ones that hit are so very good.

No way that the yanks can do what tampa does, because with few exceptions, the Yanks aren’t dealing with a roster full of rookies and 2nd year players. As the old guard leaves, that may change, but, as long as they add FA players, they aren’t getting “home town discounts”.

they shouldn’t operate exactly like Tampa does because they don’t have to take on that much risk to sign kids that early…..however if they really believe in certain young players then they should try to lock them up BEFORE they get so expensive IMO….not in all cases but the special ones.

When you operate on a budget and talk about the payroll all the time then it makes no sense to wait until players are going to cost the absolute most to retain them…..if you want to retain them.

I bet, the lead story on MLB Hot Stove, TMZ etc. Erin would have a field day.

    Jack-

That is because you live in Rio Rancho which is almost like a NY colony.

I lived near Edgewood out in the mountains so I knew about remote.

I know and it makes those late nite tumbles easier to handle too.

    Got to run soon.

    Have a good evening.

    Don’t bother behaving yourselves.

    Ain’t much fun.

One last thing I must say before I go.

When I was back East visiting Family I had the extreme pleasure and high honor to taste a few slices of NY style pizza again.

I have to say the experience was exquisite.

I really, really miss the food.

    Later.
