Girardi and Cano assisting with Yankees Holiday Food Drive
The Yankees passed along information about tomorrow’s Yankees Holiday Food Drive at Yankee Stadium. Joe Girardi and Robinson Cano will be on hand to help with donations. Here’s the release from the Yankees with all of the details.
The New York Yankees will continue another great tradition this holiday season with the 18th annual Yankees Holiday Food Drive, presented by White Rose Foods. On Wednesday, December 14, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Gate 2 at Yankee Stadium (corner of 164th Street and Jerome Ave.), any fan bringing at least 30 pounds of non-perishable food will receive a voucher good for two (2) complimentary Grandstand or Bleachers tickets or two (2) half-price tickets in select general seating areas* to one of 22 designated games during the 2012 regular season.**
Joe Girardi and Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano (arrival time TBA) will be on hand to assist in collecting food items. The Yankees, in conjunction with Bronx clergy, will distribute the food throughout the Bronx to those in need. To help kick off the Yankees Food Drive, White Rose Foods and Domino – along with their Good Neighbor Brands General Mills, Unilever, ConAgra, Smucker’s, Barilla, Nestle, Red Gold, Georgia Pacific, Pinnacle, Motts and Kraft – will donate over 40 pallets of food (approximately 60,000 lbs).

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that the Twins and Josh Willingham have agreed to a contract, pending a physical.
It was supposed to be Montero helping out, but Girardi didn’t trust him enough.

Martin isn’t going?
LOL.
Beane wants Stanton for Gio.
” Beane wants Stanton for Gio.”
That’s funny……but I do remember someone on here suggesting the Marlins trade Mike Stanton for Ozzie Guillen once…..I can’t remember who it was though.
Sweet Lou to YES booth
Martin hadn’t been tendered a contract yet, but supposedly they want him for the next three Christmases.

Ha! Love it.
The YES Hot Stove show is really good. Not just Yankees, but all of baseball. Willie Randolph, plus one of the longtime NY scribes. They have some pretty good insights.
Listening to Willie Randolph talk about Catfish Hunter…..how he and Chambliss, Roy White, Thurman, helped a young second baseman break in….. you can hear the respect and gratefulness in Willie’s voice.
They asked Willie about Yu Darvish. He said, no way. Not at that money, for someone who hasn’t ever pitched in the major leagues.
Oh, and Klapsich thinks the Mets are nearing insolvency. Hard to argue. When they have to borrow $40M, in the offseason, without any player salaries to have to pay…….
As has been reported in the NY papers, it’s close to the point when Wilpon and Katz have to sell the team.
Joe,
You and I had a conversation awhile back about the Mets ……you thought they were done for and in huge trouble and I thought that Sandy would rebuild them fairly soon and at least have them competitive …….I think you were right ….what a mess….and really no end in sight…..everyone in that divisions is significantly better than them both now and for the future.
LostNYY Lost ..
#Yankees Hal said, “I doubt highly we have the highest bid for #Darvish, I prefer more certainty if we are going to spend that money”.
blake – Because I live in NY, I follow the Mets’ shenanigans thru the papers.
Fred Wilpon and his family are in a fairly big financial mess. Besides the Mets’ problems, Fred’s real estate empire is in trouble. The only thing he owns that is profitable, as far as I can tell, is SNY. And, his financial obligations don’t yet iincude the Madoff trustee’s claim on what now stands at $386M. That court case comes due in 2012.
I really think the only way Fred survives his mess is to sell the team.
LostNYY was the same one who just one week ago Hal was going to go “all-in” on Darvish.
Then he continued to talk smack to Heyman about it.
Joe,
aside from all of that….they just have no talent in their organization and it’s going to be harder than ever to build that up.
Bret,
yea….take with plenty of salt.
The teams that make the most sense to make the highest bid for Darvish are the Nationals, Jays and Mariners. Especially the first two. Those are teams for different reasons that have money but have trouble attracting free agents.
We’ll see. This all could be bluffing. But if with a blind bid its actually difficult to truly “bluff” outside of saying you won’t bid and then make a bid. You really don’t know what a “good” or “high” bid is.
For the Yanks- Kuroda makes a great deal of sense.
Yankee fans are going to hate it. They’ll be apoplectic that the Yankees did “nothing” two winters in a row (despite keeping CC, etc.). The competition will of course have made decisive moves, such as signing Carl Crawford.
But there simply isn’t necessarily a high priced move out there to make that can make the Yankees much better given the talent already on the roster and available alternatives.
Its not reasonable to think Darvish will be an ace. Most reports on him say he could be a 2.
Its a real question at baseline whether most guys who are true 2′s are worth 100M.
That means even if Darvish fulfills his “potential” it still may not be a great deal. That’s really not a good baseline to be working off of.
Given the uncertainty its reasonable to hold your bullets.
I’m going to go jump off a bridge
CB-
I’ve been picking the Nats.
It’s would be interesting if a team came out of the woodwork.
That would make it interesting.
Next year’s FA class might be a very rich one.
Kuroda would be a nice addition…..the biggest addition could be Montero to the lineup and getting a healthy and in shape Hughes…..I’d still like for them ideally to add a real option to slot behind CC….but that may depend on trade prices falling or whatever they decide on Darvish. If Kenny Williams would decide to deal fairly on Danks then I love that option….but so far he doesn’t seem to be.
Given the uncertainty its reasonable to hold your bullets.
————————————————
For who? Hamels that will never make it to free agency?
The Nats will probably drop a big bid for Darvish….they’ve been quite this winter….they have the cash….and it would bring more attention to their organization.
Blake-
It would be interesting if it is someone we are just not talking about.
I agree on Danks. He would be attractive if KW would lower the price and offer him as a non-rental.

1921-2011: AJ Burnett is the only pitcher to make at least 96 starts with the Yankees since 1921 and have a losing record, 34-35.

CB – Hi.
It has been interesting to see the back and forth on Darvish. I, myself, have gone back and forth on him. Is he really a $100M pitcher? Willie Randolph put it perfectly – the guy’s done nothing in the major leagues. This is all pure speculation. And, because of the upfront cost of the bid, he will be pretty expensive.
One could argue that Banuelos and Betances, by virtue of playing American style baseball with an American ball, are more sure things than Darvish is.
If one accepts that pitching, specifically starting pitching, is the key to the kingdom, then I could readily imagine Brian Cashman doing all within his power to accomplish two things. One, to persuade the Phillies to trade me Cole Hamels at a price I can live with, and Two, to do whatever necessary to make Manny Banueolos and Delin Betances big time big league pitchers. Those moves might be better bets than Yu Darvish, and better values.
I’m trusting the yankee scouts on Darvish….I don’t know enough about him to say if they spend 100 million or not.
Re: Can Food Drive
” … In general, most studies have found that urinary BPA levels in typical adults average somewhere around 2 micrograms per liter. That was roughly the levels the Harvard researchers found in the subjects after a week of eating the soup made from fresh ingredients. After eating the canned food, though, their levels rose above 20 micrograms per liter, a 1,221 percent increase. … “
Just saying .
Stay away from canned food .
Joe-
Assuming Hamels even makes it to FA there will tremendous competition for his services.
The Nats already have solid pitching. I think that it should be a club that isn’t far away from contending, but need to imprve their pitching, maybe Toronto or Cincinnati, or perhaps even St Louis.
Since when do the Yankees not over spend on players? This is kind of a precedent if they don’t throw down for Darvish over money reasons.
It seems that every organization holding top-rotation starting pitchers nearing the end of their contracts are competitive teams. There’s no incentive to trade a key piece like that.
Gio Gonzalez is the only potential #2 out there who pitches for a team that is guaranteed to miss the playoffs. There’s just a huge shortage of talent on that Oakland team.

The truth is that nobody knows. And nobody will know until they see him face MLB hitting. In the videos that I’ve seen of Darvish (admittedly a very small sampling), it seems like a lot of Japanese hitters swing at balls well off the plate. Darvish won’t get away with that against Major Leaguers.
“1921-2011: AJ Burnett is the only pitcher to make at least 96 starts with the Yankees since 1921 and have a losing record, 34-35.”
Why 96 starts? Yankeesource does realize that AJ is only 1 game away from NOT having a losing record.
I just don’t get stuff like that tweet. The guy has nothing better to say, so it’s bash AJ time. Whatever
2 losses for UNC ALREADY?
“it seems like a lot of Japanese hitters swing at balls well off the plate. Darvish won’t get away with that against Major Leaguers.”
I’ve watched as much video as I can find online of him and 3 things jump out at me really. 1) he does have good stuff…..very live fastball and sharp breaking ball when it’s down. 2) japanese hitters chase a lot of garbage that big leaguers would spit on out of hand 3) he leaves breaking balls up in the zone sometimes…..
It’s really tough to tell much just based on the clips….you’d need to see him pitch multiple full games to really get any idea of what he’s about.
Thought of the day, stay away from canned food.
Good grief.
Darvish will be a 100 million dollar version of Jeff Weaver (not JERED)
“2 losses for UNC ALREADY?”
only thing that matters is March….this isn’t the BCS. Anyway they should have beat Kentucky and UNLV couldn’t miss in the 2nd half of that game…..long way to go yet.
Why 96 starts?
–
Because that is how many AJ has… so no pitcher has been allowed to pitch as much as AJ has and have a losing record. AJ sucks, dude.
UNC SUCKS
Darvish won’t get away with that against Major Leaguers.
–
So you’re saying he wont have a sub 2 ERA in the majors?

I’ve never seen anybody as systematically ignored by most of the bloggers on a forum as that person.
Bret, you can get off Gio. They just asked for Stanton for him. Fuggedaboutit.
“2 losses for UNC ALREADY?”
Have you heard the saying it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.
I would be very afraid if I was you. Very afraid.
They suck. They suck. They SUCK!!!
“Because that is how many AJ has… so no pitcher has been allowed to pitch as much as AJ has and have a losing record. AJ sucks, dude.”
Arbitrary number dude.
Did Pavano suck? Oh wait no he didn’t have 96 starts so I guess he was better than AJ huh?
“Why 96 starts? Yankeesource does realize that AJ is only 1 game away from NOT having a losing record.”
Hi Tar….hope you’re well…..AJ has pitched 98 games for the Yankees and is 34-35 during his Yankee career.
I think the point is that the Yankees are a combined 106 games over .500 since AJ joined them……it’s almost unimaginable that he could have pitched badly enough to have a losing record….
He should have used the number 98 because that’s how many starts he has as a Yankee….still has a losing record in 98 starts.

Yes I know. Plan B. Wait another year. Maybe this trade deadline the prices will come down but probably not…and maybe next off season the front office can find a fair compromise….probably not though. At some point you have to pay to win.
Hi Blake
The implication is that AJ is the worst pitcher in the last 96 years.
That is just false.
“They suck. They suck. They SUCK!!!”
You are sounding just like a whiney Sox fan.
Excuse me I should have said since 1921.
and not to pile on….but here are AJ’s average fastball velocities since 2007
2007: 95.1
2008: 94.3
2009: 94.2
2010: 93.2
2011: 92.7
not a good trend and you notice that he really fell off in 2010 when he average velocity started settling in the low 90′s……if he loses more velocity it’s going to get worse….velocity is everything for AJ
The implication is that AJ is the worst pitcher in the last 96 years.
–
The worst pitcher allowed to pitch 66 games probably. Most pitchers that suck get booted.

===================
Oy. Usually when folks spend $100 million on something, they like to have some reasonable expectation that they will get their money’s worth. The spread of outcomes with this guy is so wide, it’s hard to know what to expect from him: He could be an ace, or he could be a guy that barely hangs onto his spot in the rotation. That kind of variability in outcomes would be acceptable with a smaller wager at risk.
“The implication is that AJ is the worst pitcher in the last 96 years. ”
no of course not….there have been a lot worse pitchers than AJ in the last 96 years…..there are some out there now…..the thing is though that most of those guys haven’t been allowed to pitch as long as AJ has.

That’s a great point. You’ve gotta be pretty good for them to keep running you out there if you’re not winning. In other words, it say something that Cy Young lost over 300 games.
Beane just has no reason to trade Gio unless he gets a big haul. He doesn’t cost that much.
Who else is a free agent next off season?
