Classy farewell from one of New York’s best

Interrupting another slow offseason day to direct your attention to this beautiful goodbye from one of the very best columnists in New York.

I don’t know him well, but I’m always proud to tell people that I’ve spoken with George Vecsey on several occasions, and he’s always been about as kind a man as you could ever hope to meet. One of the great written voices in the City as well.

It doesn’t take long for a young sports reporter to get over the fact he’s surrounded by great athletes day after day. Being surrounded by writers like Vecsey, though, always feels special and never gets old.

All the best to George in all that comes next.

RIP, George Vescey. Last of the NY old guard covering baseball. Sorry he’s gone.

  2. MDD2 December 16th, 2011 at 6:57 pm

    ^ He retired…no RIP necessary.

He isn’t dead, just leaving the NY Times.

There are reports in Japan that the top bid for Yu Darvish was 37 million yen (about $48M U.S.). Not confirmed. BlueJays

  6. kd December 16th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

when will all of this darvish stuff be over?

  7. Against All Odds December 16th, 2011 at 7:20 pm

Probably by next week Monday or Tuesday

  8. Nick in SF December 16th, 2011 at 7:21 pm

It won’t really be over until his Hall of Fame induction.

  9. Nilsson December 16th, 2011 at 7:28 pm

Sad to hear he’s leaving NYT. I grew up reading his sports columns.

It’s weird how vastly different he was from his brother. George’s style was always dignified. On the other side of the coin, his brother Pete was sorta of a douche.

George is one of the great sports journalist of this generation……I will miss reading his column and insights…….

  11. Pat M. December 16th, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Nilsson…..Peter knew hoops though especially NY hoops, but I agree he lacked George’s class and style….

It really is a bummer to see Mark Melancon on the Red Sox, same with Aceves. I don’t blame Cashman at all for trading him, as Berkman clearly still had the potential to be a difference maker. Do we even need Melancon right now? Is he better than Joba?

We dealt from strength, but it just didn’t work out.

Why don’t we just sign Roy Oswalt? Is someone going to give him three years?

  14. Tom in N.J. December 16th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

    George’s brother is a grade ‘A’ hack.

kev; ruth, ruffing, lyle, el tiante, boggs, damon, we’ve gotten a few from boston over the years, too…

  16. kd December 16th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

quick poll: gio gonzalez or danks?

    my vote: danks

  17. Ys Guy December 16th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

ill take gio, the trends are better, but that’s two talented pitchers.

  18. GreenBeret7 December 16th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

I see the Cubs are after Paul Maholm. I’m surprised that he wasn’t connected to the Yanks or anyone else for that matter.

Feds went 0 for 2 on prison time on PEDs cases today. Novitzky must be cranky tonight.

Loved this description of Galea’s sentence… “a year of supervised release that would not be supervised.” otherwise known as unsupervised release?

    gio

I’d vote for Danks. 4 pitch pitcher. Throws a cutter. Good ground ball rates. Reminds me a bit of Pettitte.

Gio may have a higher overall ceiling – but his floor is also much lower. I just completely dislike the walk rates.

  22. Joe from Long Island December 16th, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Writers like George Vescey are why I’ve always loved newspapers. Call me 20th century.

Boy, those federal investigations have sure been worth it. Glad the Congress and Justice Dept spent so much time effort and money on this.

  23. Baseball Mogul December 16th, 2011 at 9:07 pm

” I just completely dislike the walk rates.”

    ——————————-

I’d vote Danks also. Gio’s home/away splits are significant too.

I see the one year rental as a positive: probably a lower cost in terms of prospects and it gives them flexibility going forward if Betances or Banuelos are ready after 2012 or if someone else becomes available next offseason.

  24. Pat M. December 16th, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Doc Joe…..And the US Justice Dept. is going to spend even more dough for the re-trial of Roger Clemens…..Public humiliation and tarnished legacy’s should suffice at this point…..Next time you recieve your pay check just look at the tax deductions and ask your self why !!!!

  25. Ys Guy December 16th, 2011 at 9:11 pm

prosecuting clemmens isn’t the first waste of public money that comes to my mind, but i won’t get political here…

  26. pat December 16th, 2011 at 9:27 pm

    Gossip Break…..

Reports Kobe’s wife filed for divorce today.

    1. When you have 2 young children is the week before Christmas really the best timing.

    2. Could it be true they don’t have a pre-nup?

  27. blake December 16th, 2011 at 9:37 pm

Danks…..because I think he will ultimately cost significantly less.

  28. Against All Odds December 16th, 2011 at 9:50 pm

Yea I think number 2 is true
