Yankees once again host the Bronx Winter Wonderland
Good job by the Yankees who today once again hosted the Bronx Winter Wonderland, an event held in conjunction with the Bronx Borough President’s Office and Legends Hospitality. It drew approximately 5,000 local children last year. Some more details from the team…
Hosted in Yankee Stadium’s Great Hall, local youth will be treated to a holiday extravaganza, complete with holiday decorations, festive music, including caroling by the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club Choir, and food and drink.
The New York Yankees Foundation has made a contribution in the amount of $25,000 in support of this effort to cover the costs associated with the event. A matching in-kind contribution was made by Neil and Amanda Friedman to aid in ensuring that each child in attendance receives a holiday gift.
“Once again, I am thrilled to work with the New York Yankees and all of our sponsors to make the holidays a little more enjoyable for thousands of Bronx children. This event is a great way for my office, together with the New York Yankees, to show the Bronx that the true spirit of giving is alive and well this holiday season,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Stuff like this just makes me realize how fortunate my family is.
God Bless everyone who makes a point of helping those less fortunate at the holidays and all throughout the year.
Very nice

Only Jackson’s and Martin’s shouldn’t be retired. The rest were Yankee legends of one sort or another. Those two don’t fit. No reason that Mattingly shouldn’t be retired. He set a lot of team and ML records in his time. Hard to say you’d retire Torre’s number but not Stengel’s. Same with Rizzuto. Whether you agree or not, he’s a HOFer with over 60 years with the team. Stottlemyre’s number should be retired. A lot of people ignore just how great he really was with some of the worst teams in club history.
Erin,
Will jeter be giving out gift baskets for the occassion after the ceremony?
Once Martin and Jackson were retired, it opens the door for other numbers that maybe shouldn’t be.
Or, they can pretend they didn’t retire Martin and Jackson and have a new set of qualifications.
Shame,
Well, I’m not certain about who exactly SHOULD get a retired number. I know monuments should be few and far between. But numbers are a conundrum. Especially since Martin and Jackson have been retired. Makes it difficult to keep other numbers unretired. And numbers, if they’re going to be retired, need to be done while the person is alive, no?
I think homegrown, lifelong Yankees who made a mark on the team should be retired, so that would definitely include Bernie. Not really sure about Torre or Pettitte. But if Posada is, then so should Pettitte be.
Poor Yankees…..
Dr. Anthony Galea gets zero time, $275,000 fine one year’s supervised release and can’t enter the US without pernission, for drug smuggling (HGH). Must be Christmas.

Whole numbers between 0 and 100 are a finite set. I would be more willing to give monuments and plaques than dedicating numbers.
GB7,
Only saw Etta James live once, but sure did ok with the ladies with her on in the background. A loss to crossword puzzles, too.
Kingdom of Boredom .
That is , I mean Yankeeland .
Why you can’t get enough of it loser.

Plaques, sure. But monuments? Those take up a lot of real estate!!!
Truly, I don’t know why they didn’t do plaques w/o retiring numbers. Who thought up the idea of retiring numbers? And when? It’s fine if you have a team with a couple of guys who’ve made an impact over the course of our history. But the Yankees, with the championship thing going on, it was not a good idea. Or, rather, it was not thought-through very well.
Reminder ,
you can see my posts , but I can’t see yours .

Why can’t they retire a number until the player has passed, and then re-activate it?
Most retired number players also have a plaque, don’t they?
tomingeorgia –
No, no! She will live on in crossword puzzles forever!!
(And so will Uma when her time comes.
)
Villa Nova & GB….I agree with both of you regarding the retiring of both Reggie & Martin’s numbers and to a degree Guidry’s number as well……Also I think George’s decision to throw around the Yanks Captaincy was lowered to a degree as well……It seemed as though their were more Yankee Captains in th 80′s than all the years combined……Nettles, Guidry, and Randolph were all Yankee Captains in the 80′s……Did I miss anyone ????
Villa,
What would crosswords be without those two, plus Tomei!

Than can even have a handful that are never unretired, like Ruth, Gehrig, Yogi, DiMaggio, Mantle – see, where this is going???? AAAGh..
Maybe just Ruth & Gehrig.
Am I spelling Gehrig correctly?
tomingeorgia – YES!!! LOL
Pat M – The Yankees are a victim of their own success.
Hi everyone,
On the retired number issue, i agree that Jackson’s and martin’s numbers shouldn’t be retired. On Pettite i think his number should be retired as well as Posada’s. Guidry’s not so sure, but Mel’s should be retired, he was one hell of a pitcher for the Yankees as well as a great pitching coach.
Probably a plaque would have been better than retiring the number, but that’s water under the bridge.
Pat, have no problem with Guidry’s number being retired as with Stottlemyre’s. Like Mattingly, only injuries kept their numbers from being HOF worthy. Stottlemyre with 153 wins and a 2.97 ERA in 9 full seasons and 2 partials, 40 complete game shutouts with some of the worst teams in their history. Guidry and Mattingly in 12-13 years
The Nationals are “all but out” of the Gonzalez sweepstakes, according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com. The Athletics’ asking price is “way out of line,” Ladson hears.

shocker
NYYs still have numbers to go. at most, 40 uniformed players and coaches in a season and will be about 20 retired. 39 numbers to play with.
L . o . l .
Very funny scene taking place at the mall . Wish you were here .
Red Robin – Reminder. We don’t care what you post. You have to go to some other website to find people who care.
