Mattingly to appear in Nutcracker ballet performance

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 17, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Pretty much impossible to make this up.

Don Mattingly will wear a wig and a big dress in an Indiana performance of The Nutcracker tonight. He’s going to play a character named Mother Ginger, whose dress apparently hides multiple little kids, who come pouring out during the second act. *

The above link has all the details from the Evansville Courier & Press, including the somewhat awkward suggestion from the Evansville Ballet’s artistic director, who had vaguely mentioned the idea to Mattingly’s wife, who’s also performing.

“I’ve been around athletes my whole life,” Mattingly said. “I look at all these dancers as basically athletes in a very disciplined art form. I really have enjoyed it.”

*As you might guess, I’m basing the details of the performance entirely on what I’ve read. I’m not exactly a ballet expert. Or a ballet anything for that matter.

    I’ve been saying for years that ballplayers need to learn ballet and other dances to become more flexible and mobile. Mattingly is finally listening to me. I wasn’t aware that donny M. had remarried after getting away from that nutcase he was married to.

  2. Villa Nova-Ya December 17th, 2011 at 7:39 pm

    I didn’t know Donny had remarried either.

    He’ll have a blast performing in the Nutcracker.

    Mattingly married Kim Sexton on September 8, 1979; they are now divorced. They have three sons: Taylor, Preston, and Jordon, two of whom attempted careers at professional baseball.

    Preston Mattingly with the Class-A Great Lakes Loons
    Taylor was drafted in the 42nd round (1262nd overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Yankees, and played in 24 games for the Gulf Coast Yankees in the rookie league before an injury cut short his season. After sitting out all of 2004 and 2005, Taylor retired from baseball in 2005 after only 58 professional at bats. Of his eldest son, Don mentioned: “He loved the game, not the lifestyle.”[12]

    Preston was chosen in the first round (31st overall) of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and was rated as a B- prospect in John Sickels’ 2007 Baseball Prospect Book. Sickels noted, “Position a question but has promising tools and bloodlines.”[13] Preston was traded to the Cleveland Indians on September 26, 2010, just nine days after his father was announced as the manager of the Dodgers for the 2011 season.[14] He was subsequently released by the Indians at the end of spring training, and resigned with the Dodgers.[15]

    Mattingly remarried on December 10, 2010 in his hometown of Evansville, Indiana. The marriage as well as his managing the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League kept him from attending the Fall 2010 Winter Meetings.[16]

    Tony LaRussa did the ballet thing for a number of years with the Oakland Ballet. Think that was the Nutcracker as well.

    He also got some of the players involved, including Dave Stewart as I recall. When you’re Dave Stewart, nobody is going to give you shi-ite about anything.

  20. Red Robin December 17th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

    We decided on ” Carnage . “

    The only way it makes sense to pay part of AJ’s salary to pitch somewhere else is if you replace him with someone inexpensive who is likely to do as well or better, like Noesi or Colon.

  24. Ys Guy December 17th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

    i had to leave that discussion and take my gf to the emergency room b/c she cut her finger. anyway, if you sign Kuroda to take aj’s place for $12M and then you have to pay $8M of aj’s salary, in the end you are paying $24M to cover that rotation spot which was suppsed to cost you $16.5M, so it cost you $7.5M more to make the switch. And getting anyone to assume $8.5M of AJ’s salary is probably way too optimistic.

  25. jacksquat December 17th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

    If what SI said is correct, and the bid for Yu was over $51 mil, I don’t think it was the Yankees. And I wouldn’t go that high either. It’s probably the Jays.

  26. Ys Guy December 17th, 2011 at 8:39 pm

    if the jays are going to pay $50M on the bid and 5/$75M for the contract then the average cost for yu to the jays will be more than the yankees cost for cc over the same 5 years. good luck with that…

    Hopefully she is ok Ys

  28. jacksquat December 17th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

    Yu Darvish updated his blog on Friday and spoke of losing some wait, but nothing more.

    Losing weight: Done

    I finished my first round of weight loss.

    I lost about 5-6kg over three weeks (a good pace) and now plan gain 3kg and then lose 3-4 kg in January.

    I have also managed to maintain the amount I can lift!

    I want to focus on growing stronger and trimming down even more.

    I also recently found out how I like to blow off steam.

    By thinking about training exercises, how to stay fit, and supplements.

    You may have realized by now that…

    I am weird.

    Today I feel that baseball, or being an athlete, is a vocation.

    http://yakyubaka.com/tag/yu-darvish/

    That is weird, because I thought he was trying to put on weight (muscle weight). He does not appear to really have any excess fat to trim off. To gain strength you pretty much have to add muscle mass, and therefor weight.

    Yea that’s basically Cliff Lee money…..now part of that isn’t taxed but its still a load to pay for a guy that’s never pitched in the big leagues. If Darvish plays hardball on the contract and then I can definitely see him just staying in Japan……..however there will be more pitching on the market next winter mist likely so he may get even less then.

  33. austinmac December 17th, 2011 at 11:30 pm

    Blake,

    The luxury tax doesn’t affect the Jays so they are paying as if he were an MLB free agent. Pretty amazing. I wish he would be a Yankee, but I understand why he will not be.

    The Latos returns will embolden other potential trade partners for pitchers.

    Edwin Jackson anyone? But, he would likely require at least three years.

  34. blake December 17th, 2011 at 11:33 pm

    True but it’s still money….

    No thanks on EJax…..we already have an AJ.

  35. DaSaint007 December 17th, 2011 at 11:44 pm

    I’d rather play Lotto than make the bid the Jays supposedly did for YU.

    In fact, we could probably sign Colon, and use all our AAA staff and get the same results as Yu will get this year, yet save tons of cash.

  36. Deal With It December 18th, 2011 at 6:32 am

    First everybody here is hot to trot for Yu and can’t live without him, he is the alleged savior.. Now that the supposed bid posting amount is leaking out, coupled with his expected contract demands he is now much too expensive.

    A few here said from the get go that he would be too expensive and not worth the risk / investment. Opinions changing in an instant…………………………..?

  37. Villa Nova-Ya December 18th, 2011 at 7:09 am

    GB7 -

    I was thinking of the ribbing he’d get from his players and peers. Wasn’t thinking about what he might get from the “fans.”

    Still, I think he’s tough enough to take it. :)

    Y’s Guy -

    Good to put the numbers on the AJ/Kuroda thing. Glad your gf is okay.

    jacksquat -

    Maybe something got lost in the the translation of Darvish’s blog?

  38. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 7:32 am

    well, i had the math wrong, $12M (kuroda) + $8M (aj)= $20 M to cover the spot which was supposed to cost $16.5M an increase of $3.5M. But then, they arent going to get anyone to pay half of aj’s salary, so it might end up consting $7.5M or more anyway.

  39. Villa Nova-Ya December 18th, 2011 at 7:36 am

    Y’s Guy -

    Yeah – if they’re watching every nickel, as they seem to be, it doesn’t make sense.

    They can’t count on AJ. But I believe they are stuck with him for 2 more years. So you have to have a strong staff ahead of him. So the keys are Hughes, Nova and Garcia/Noesi/unknown. If Hughes has a bounce-back year and CC is CC, they can withstand AJ. It’s aggravating, but it is what it is, as the man said.

    Hey, maybe Girardi finally starts taking AJ out a little quicker and some of those losses turn into wins. You never know.

  41. Tom in N.J. December 18th, 2011 at 7:50 am

    Yesterday on ESPN Radio Tim Kurkjian said that Yu is ‘stuff-wise’ somewhere between Josh Becket and A.J. Burnett.

  42. blake December 18th, 2011 at 7:55 am

    You have to pay AJ either way…..its not like if you keep him you dont have to pay him. Trading hiim means you just get to pay him less. Adding Kuroda and subtracting AJ would make the rotatation significantly better and thats the goal.

  43. blake December 18th, 2011 at 8:06 am

    If you signed Kuroda to a one year 12 million dollar deal and then were able to deal AJ by eating half his contract ……then you’d add about 4 million to the 2012 payroll but still subtract 8 million from the 2013 payroll.

    You’d be knocking 16 million off the books whole making the team better…..the question is obviously would you have to eat more to move Burnett…..and maybe so but either way its trimming payroll and getting somebody better into the rotation….which should be the goal.

  44. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 8:28 am

    you’re not trimming payroll, you’re adding payroll. you may be making the rotation better but you are definitely adding payroll to do it.

  45. blake December 18th, 2011 at 8:32 am

    Ys,

    In 2012 only…..you’re cutting it again in 2013…..and also Im assuming they are going to add a starter…..if they add a starter then its going to cost less trading AJ than keeping both he and whoever they add. Another option would be to deal AJ and then just put Noesi in the rotation……that really does trim payroll and still gets a better pitcher in the rotation and one with upside.

  46. upstate kate December 18th, 2011 at 8:33 am

    morning all!

    Is it Donnie Ballet instead of Donnie Baseball now?

    Glad to hear your GF is OK, Ys

    I really don’t see AJ being traded

  47. blake December 18th, 2011 at 8:48 am

    If they don’t add a starter then they’ll keep AJ for depth……if they do add someone then I really think they will deal him both because there would be no spot for him and to offset the salary of the new guy. JMO

  48. upstate kate December 18th, 2011 at 8:50 am

    maybe the Nats would take him

  49. Villa Nova-Ya December 18th, 2011 at 8:54 am

    blake -

    Well, you are sticking to your guns, that’s for sure. I don’t see any takers for AJ, on two fronts – first, how does he improve anybody’s rotation, at any cost? And second, who wants to help out the Yankees by taking on AJ?

  50. 108 stitches December 18th, 2011 at 8:55 am

    blake December 18th, 2011 at 7:55 am

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    One way or another, Cashman has to subtract Burnett before 2013. As it is right now, he’s blocking the progress of Noesi, Warren, Phelps, and Mitchell. In 2013 he holds back the progress of Betances and Banuelos.
    Burnett will have heavy competition from Hughes and Noesi in ST of this year and if Cashman gets Kuroda, Burnett starts the year as a high paid back-of-the bullpen mop up man for junk innings.
  51. blake December 18th, 2011 at 8:59 am
    Villa,
    lol. There are always teams that could use help at the back end of their rotation and with the prices of pitching now I could see some NL team being interesting if the Yanks would make him affordable. If you needed a starter would you rather pay AJ 2/16 or Edwin Jackson 3/45 or whatever he’ll get? If you put AJ in the right ball park I think he could do ok…..Nats, Marlins, Dbacks, Padres etc…
    I think the Marlins and Nats are both interesting options because they both have money and they both want to win now.
  52. Villa Nova-Ya December 18th, 2011 at 9:03 am
    blake -
    Well, I hope you’re right. Actually a change of scenery could do AJ some good. He’s been a stand-up guy, most of the time, start after start answering the media. It might be nice to be somewhere with a little less exposure. I do hope it’s an NL team, though, because there’s no way I want to see a reborn AJ blowing away ARod & Jeter again!
    This might be one of those things that has to wait until just before the season starts.
  53. blake December 18th, 2011 at 9:04 am
    After watching the 2nd Cespedes video…..I’m curious for sure about him. Unfortunately the video doesn’t show him trying to hit a John Lester cutter or a Felix Hernandez curveball…..but he does some things in that video that very few human being can do.
    If the price is around Chapman money then I’d certainly be interested….even if it were a little more because the potential value would be so good. This guy has some Justin Upton like tools……only question is whether he has the all important “hit tool” against big league pitchers that really separates whether you can play in the big leagues or not.
  54. blake December 18th, 2011 at 9:05 am
    Villa,
    I agree…I think a change of scenery would be good for him too.
  55. Tar December 18th, 2011 at 9:07 am
    “As it is right now, he’s blocking the progress of Noesi, Warren, Phelps, and Mitchell.”
    They just signed Garcia who is doing the same thing. The only way I see them dumping AJ is if they give one of those kids a spot/ or sign Yu. Not by swapping a Kuroda or Jackson for AJ. Only than are they are actually saving payroll instead of Blake’s funny math. :D
