Jeter’s milestones are more Yankee-like because he is Jeter!

  2. Nick in SF December 18th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

He is also more likely to leave an autographed milestone in a gift basket for the special fan.

The only think Arod cares about autographing is the back of a check.

  3. Villa Nova-Ya December 18th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Wait, no! Derek Jeter doesn’t have milestones!!!

    ****
    pat -

I agree that all players care about their milestones. Derek seemed to have a bit of a blip going for 3,000 hits and even admitted that it had an effect on him. My point was that ARod doesn’t seem to talk about that stuff as much as he did (or maybe it just seems that way).

  4. GreenBeret7 December 18th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

There are very few third basemen that put up 30+ homers, 100+ rBI and a .280-.290 batting average year after year. Two of the last 3 years by Rodriguez. Given his number of at bats, that’s pretty inpressive. He can’t control injuries unless you’d prefer to see him or any other player dog it on the field. His numbers in 2011 were on the same target.

Perhaps you’d better look at Sukuki’s numbers against his 2009 and 2010 numbers. The drops were worse than Jeter’s or Rodriguez. Sorry, but, that’s as much of a collapse as people are claiming Jeter/Rodriguiz had.

Jeter, just like Rodriguez knows exactly what his numbers are and where he stands. Rivera may not know exactly, but, he knows that the numbers are pretty damned good.

  5. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

again, i couldn’t care less about milestones.

gb, thats what i said, i didnt consider either arod or ichiro as ‘collapsing’, someone else did. i was just making the point that if you call ichiro’s 2011 #’s a collapse, then you had to call arods a collapse, too. i think they will both be good this coming year at least at the start of the year. ichiro has to prove he’s interested over the long haul on a last place team, arod has to prove he healthy.

lets hope arod comes through big time.

  6. GreenBeret7 December 18th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

Rodriguez has always known what his numbers were, just like Aaron, Mays, and Jeter. they knew because the media kept reminding them. Rodriguez talked about it when asked. Jeter knows his two. He just gave his standard response as he does when asked about what he had for breakfast. “It doesn’t matter what nuymber of bowls of cereal I had as long as we win.”

  7. LGY December 18th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Jeter’s milestones are more Yankee like because Hank was locked in the basement during the negotiations.

  8. blake December 18th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Was Hank locked in the basement when they discussed the bid for Yu?

  9. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

i think hank is banished from any negotiations till arod gets the whole $300M, then maybe we can talk…

  10. pat December 18th, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Out of curiosity………If Alex is ranked 45th, who is ranked 44th and 46th?

  11. LGY December 18th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Nah. Hank has been busy making youtube videos for Centipedes.

Yu bid discussions were conducted with George via a Ouiji board.

The Yanks have been hush-hush on whether it was Hank or Hal manning the board, however.

The fate of the franchise could hang in the balance.

  14. pat December 18th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

Pujols has a $7M bonus for hitting HR#763 in his Angels contract and Hank wasn’t even involved.

I think that it’s a little unfair to draw the kinds of distinctions that some on this forum have drawn between Jeter and ARod, suggesting that Alex is selfish and focused on his individual achievements.

It could be another 86 years before the Yanks win another WS if they pass on Darvish!

  17. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 6:13 pm

pat thats obvious, if hank was involved, he would be getting $35M in milestone bonuses not $7M

    or 10 months…

  19. GreenBeret7 December 18th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Jeter is considered a winning player and not Rodriguez, because Jeter’s been on winning teams, surrounded by star players…same as Mantle, Berra, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio. Until Rodriguez got to NY, he either had pitching or hitting stars, but, seldom had both at the same time. Makes no difference because of over the years, the Yanks weren’t likely to win without either player.

  20. pat December 18th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Pujols has over $30M in incentives in his contract.

  21. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 6:27 pm

well somewhere i read that the yankees have won the WS 25% of the seasons they have played (27/108 with 1994 not counting) but they have only won 1 WS during the time arod has been the ‘star’ or the team (12.5%).

but i think thats not really fair. mattingly never won one. (jeter’s 5/15 31% is unfair to compare to).

  22. Red Robin December 18th, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Hitch your wagon to a star of the 1% .

  23. blake December 18th, 2011 at 6:34 pm

At least Alex was showing no sign of decline when he signed both of his contracts……the Angels may end up paying 300 million for a player that was already in decline when they signed him.

  24. Laura - I Bleed Blue December 18th, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Well, we know Jeter leads the Majors in Most Autographed Baseballs given out to women. :P

  25. Laura - I Bleed Blue December 18th, 2011 at 6:38 pm

I wonder if the players in the American League are excited about playing against Pujols on a regular basis. Probably not. :P

  26. blake December 18th, 2011 at 6:40 pm

How far from the wild pitch record is AJ?

  27. GreenBeret7 December 18th, 2011 at 6:44 pm

The difference between the late 90s-200o teams and those since 2004 is balance in the pitching staffs and offense. Hell, those teams rotated 4 players between DH and left field. Since 2004, the pitching staffs have been mostly patched together in the rotation with rookies and bad signings for the pitchers. Usually one stud pitcher and castoffs or kids. The bullpen has been exceptional, but, seldom more than one lefty. Pettitte was more reliable than stud, until the post season. It was Mussina and others and now it’s sabathia and others. I’d prefer the kids learning now as oppossed to bringing in a handful of one year patches. It’s time to see what Hughes and Nova and the kids behind them can do. Burnnett is gone in 2 years and Garcia after 2012. Same thing with the select few offensive pkayers. NYY has been looking for hitters like Nunez is for years. Not since Cano have they had that. The offensive players are doing exactly what they were brought in to do…produce runs.

What’s the record for harping on the same subject on a sports board? Must be getting close.

  29. 108 stitches December 18th, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Alex came to the Yankees as a SS in 2004 and fully knew that NY is Jeter’s town. He gladly accepted moving to 3rd base and worked many long hard hours with Graig Nettles for at least 2 spring trainings to make the transition as smooth as possible.

There would never be a “straw that sirs the drink” such as Reggie Jackson ignited with Thurman Munson.

There were probably 3+ years in the mid-late 2000′s that the Yanks don’t make the playoffs without Alex……and no 09 WS without Alex either.

Not a third baseman in baseball that wouldn’t have killed for Rodriguez numbers from 2008-2010 and without injuries, his 2011 numbers would have been that or better.

    He was ambidextrous. And Irish.

Tebow may never become the top quarterback in the NFL, but, he plays a lot like Jim McMahon did….never pretty, never great numbers, but, always seemed to win.

My Cowboys in first. Next week the G-Men v the Jets, Cowboys v Iggles.

More then likely will come down to the final game at Giant Stadium between the two teams on New Years Day.

Have to take my hat off to Eli as much as I dispise the Giants, he has been absolutely brilliant this season. MVP like.

  47. Patrick December 18th, 2011 at 7:12 pm

    Next week:
    Giants lose to the Jets
    Eagles beat the Cowboys

    Week after that:
    Eagles beat the Redskins
    Giants beat the Cowboys

Result? Eagles win division :) :)

so when you break it i want my due credit.

No problem, Randy. We’ll raise a toast to you and wash down the record setting pizza with beer. The record will live forever.

I never knew if you were just trying to keep some crap stirred up with that Livan stuff or if you had a screw loose. I settled on both.

  52. Patrick December 18th, 2011 at 7:19 pm

    Giants will beat the Jets.

Not sure I’d be all that confident in the Giants beating ANYONE after the way they played today

  53. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 7:22 pm

Redskins are a very good team.

A lot of dropped passes by the Giant receivers today.

The Skins beat the Giants twice this year.

Imo the Jets are one of the most over-rated teams in the entire NFL.

    As well as Mark Sanchez.

  54. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 7:23 pm

If Sanchez thinks he had a tough day today wait wait until next week.

  55. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Sanchez is going to be running for his life.

Plaxico might have a decent game but i guess that works both ways, the Giant defense will more then likely want to make him look bad.

Hard to blame the quarterback for the defense giving up 45 points

  58. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 7:37 pm

I didn’t blame Sanchez for the faults of the Jet defense.

He did make some big mistakes that contributed to the Eagle lead though.

I watched the game early but it’s so ugly I’m guessing only the Eagle fanes are still tuned in.

  59. Carlo December 18th, 2011 at 7:38 pm

They sure were ugly today. I just don’t know about these guys, I wonder is some just get up on Sunday morning and say you know I just don’t feeel like putting it out today.

Terell Thomas was a hugh loss. I love Spags, but I’m sort of hoping he gets let go so we could have a shot at getting him back here. Tuck is really hurt, he just needs a offseason so he can play again at his level. Osi like MIA for the entire year.

  63. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Gary as a lifelong Cowboy fan I have nothing but the utmost respect for TC.

I’d love to see the Giants fire him.

  64. Smackerel December 18th, 2011 at 8:07 pm

So in other words, Jeter is far from being 1st in any category and this post really means nothing.

  65. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 8:07 pm

In my book TC is what most young coaches aspire to be.

  66. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Landry, Madden, Grant or Halas could not survive in this era of free agency, the cap, revenue sharing.

The personal changes from year to year would drive them crazy.

The bottom line is that Tom Coughlin is smarter then 99% of the coaches that he’s looking at across the field on the other sideline.

He gives the Giants a hugh advantage for example any time he plays the Cowboys over the likes of Jason Garret. That should be enough for most fans.

What is it Giant fans expect from a coach in this day and age? A dynasty?

    It’s going to happen.

  67. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Meant to type “it’s not going to happen”.

  68. jacksquat December 18th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

If anyone remembrers, Arod looked awesome last spring and finished April with a 1.000+ OPS. He looked like a potential MVP. Then I guess the physical problems started sometime after that and ultimately took him off the field. When healthy he may still be the most dangerous hitter in the lineup, at least right there with Cano.

And by WAR he has been the most valuable player on the team 4 out the 8 years he’s been on it.

  69. Nick in SF December 18th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

I didn’t watch the game, only saw the clip of Hicks (?) dropping the breadbasket probably TD pass.

I know there have been injuries.

  74. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 8:58 pm

i’ve been rooting for big blue since fran tarkenton. imo unless they think they have a young guy available who’s gonna be really good for years to come, a mike tomlin or jim harbaugh in line to take over, then keep coughlin. bringing in a bill cowher isn’t gonna be the answer, nobody’s ever won a SB with another team, im pretty sure. coughlin is a good coach and a good man and its not likely another coach is gonna come in and get it together while eli is still on his game and switching up the offensive scheme again and again is just gonna waste a franchise QB’s last few peak years.

on the defense, though this guy’s gotta go. nobody knows who they are covering and they are completely dispirited. they do need help at LB but i’ve never seen a defensive group look so lost in all the time i’ve been watching the gmen. pay what you have to and get spagnoulo back in the fold, keep him out of philly.

  75. RhapsodyInBlue December 18th, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Dogface, Keep in mind the Giants play in a tough neighborhood (NFC East) and that they’ve won more superbowls in recent times then any other team in that division.

Great news. Finally the NBA returns to NY.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

Does that mean that the NBA will be allowing two road teams to play in the Garden so the fans can see basketball games until NYC gets their own pro teams?

There is no such thing as a “Ham Fighter”!

Yu Darvish’s team in Japan is just called the “Fighters” and they’re title sponsor is the Nippon Ham company. In Japan, the professional baseball teams are usually identified by their title sponsorship and not their geographic locations.

Tokyo’s team is sponsored by Yomiuri news company, thus the “Yomiuri Giants”.

THis is not always true though. Sometimes the team’s home is part of the name, such as the Chiba Lotte Marines, who are sponored by Lotte and play in Chiba.

Their home is the northern city of Sapporo, Hokkaido. Sapporo the city, not to be confused as being title sponsored by the brewing company, which coincidentally names their beer after that city.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some Sapporo beer ads at their stadium too, but the Nippon Ham Company is their title sponsor. Calling them the “Ham Fighters” is sort of like saying our team’s name is the “York Yankees”.

Yes, one difference is that their’s involves a corporate sponsor name and ours the name of the state/city in which the team plays.

This is one of the few instances where the term “same difference” is actually used in a gramatically correct manner. (by the way)

  90. Nick in SF December 18th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

I think the Hipster Puppies tumblr is cuter than that one, but I think kimjongillookingatthings is updated more frequently.

  91. Jacques Strappe December 18th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

    “they’re title sponsor”
Now how’s THAT for gramatically correct? :P

  92. Ys Guy December 18th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

    yeah, thanks for that…

so when are the ham fighters gonna decide to grab the cash?

  93. Jacques Strappe December 18th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

If you really get down to it, Nippon Ham actually OWNS the fighters. Still, title sponsor.

  94. Nick in SF December 18th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

So they rarely fight ham these days? That’s odd.

  95. Jacques Strappe December 18th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

They’re probably going to “officially” grab it at the last minute.

They’re already counting their money while praying Darvish signs.

As I recall, Dice-K’s posting fee alone was enough to fund his old team’s entire player payroll for a few years.

If Nippon refuses to fight the ham anymore, no wonder Yu wants to leave.

  100. Jacques Strappe December 18th, 2011 at 11:03 pm

Darvish’s father is from the Middle East and his mother is Japanese. In his father’s part of the world, people generally don’t eat ham. As for fighting any hams, I don’t really know.

  101. Ghostwriter December 18th, 2011 at 11:04 pm

They’re actually in the music business. They have a whole stable of song writers. As is the custom, though, they’re not very original, as they copy most everything. Who can forget that old rock-nroll song?

    “Lotte-Lo”

    Starts like this:

    La La La Lotte
    La La La Lotte
I’ve got a girl that I love so
    Hey Lotte Lotte Lo
Her name is Lotte Lotte Lo
    Hey Lotte Lotte Lo
    Sing it:-
    Hey Lptte Lotte Lotte
    Hey Lotte Lotte Lo
    Hey Lotte Lotte Lotte
    Hey Lotte Lotte Lo
    La La La Lotte

Cubs probably say no before anyone else.

  120. blake December 19th, 2011 at 7:37 am

“,Cubs probably say no before anyone else.”

You think? But Rizzo used to be a Red Sock prospect so he has to be good right? Nah I think the Padres would have to kick in some prospects too…..but Rizzo and Romine wouldn’t be a terrible return for a guy with only 2 years of control left. I don’t get why the Padres would want Garza unless its to flip him for other pieces.

  121. dogface December 19th, 2011 at 7:41 am

..but Rizzo and Romine wouldn’t be a terrible return for a guy with only 2 years of control left

    ==========================

No, it wouldn’t IMO. Don’t see either guy as being anything special at the MLB-level.

Not really buying the Padres being in it for Garza anyway. Defies logic to move Latos for prospects only to turn around and move prospects for Garza.

  122. blake December 19th, 2011 at 7:46 am

“Not really buying the Padres being in it for Garza anyway. Defies logic to move Latos for prospects only to turn around and move prospects for Garza.”

Only thing you can figure is that they are trying to rebuild and they got several pieces for Latos and they could get a few more for Garza. They don’t need Rizzo anymore since they have Alonso……so they coukd trade him for Garza and then trade Garza to fill other holes…….

  123. upstate kate December 19th, 2011 at 7:51 am

Yankees get Garza? Music to my ears :)

  124. RadioKev December 19th, 2011 at 7:54 am

So yesterday the argument was made that we’re a much weaker team without Matsui, Damon, and Cabrera..I forget who said that. It just hit me this morning: think about the 2011 post season.

Posada and Gardner were the best players, replacing Matsui and Damon’s positions. Cabrera vs Granderson? Come on.

This isn’t a new point, but the problem in the post season came down to A-Rod and Tex being completely ineffective. Throw in no production at all from Martin, and that was a major drag on the team.

If A-Rod has a healthy year, Tex smooths out his swing, and we see more of Montero behind the plate, I’d expect better results in 2012.

  125. blake December 19th, 2011 at 7:55 am

Most folks like the Latos deal for the Padres……Im not sure I do.

They traded a young frontline starter with 5 years of control…..which is very valuable. I think when you’re rebuilding that’s harder to find than the other pieces they got. Volquez is only going to be there for 2 years and he’s a question mark…..

  126. blake December 19th, 2011 at 7:59 am

I think the 2011 Yankees may have won the WS in 2009 as well……the clutch hitting that postseason had at least something to do with facing Twins pitching, Lackey and Saunders, and a washed up Pedro Martinez…..a down year Cole Hamels etc…..

Not trying to take anything away from the 09 team because they were very good…..but I don’t think they were significantly better than either the 2010 or 2011 team……the 2011 team had the best run differential since the 1998 team I believe.

  127. dogface December 19th, 2011 at 8:02 am

Most folks like the Latos deal for the Padres……Im not sure I do

    ==================================

Obviously, you don’t get your answer for awhile. If Grandal, Alonso and Boxberger meet expectations, it’s a great score for the Pads. Don’t see Volquez as much of a factor in the deal. He’ll either continue to stink or improve to the point of being a trade chip later.

  128. blake December 19th, 2011 at 8:05 am

    Dogface,

True….its hard to judge now….but they really need at least a couple of those players to pan out to warrant trading their cheap ace. The deal would have made more sense to me if he were in his 2nd or 3rd arbitration year…….he’s not even eligible yet.

BronXoo RT @jonmorosi: Darvish’s agent tweets announcement comes late morning Japan time tomorrow — so around 9 pm ET tonight.

  131. Yankee Trader December 19th, 2011 at 8:40 am

Yasmani Grandal might be better than their other catcher, Devin Mesoraco.

Yonder Alonso, apparently not a fielding whiz, showed a pretty good bat.

Edinson Volquez still has good strikeout numbers and might improve in Petco.

However Matt Latos, even though he pitches in Petco[home ERA last season 3.24, away 3.68] might very well be the best of the pitchers on the trading block-Jurrjens, Garza, Gonzalez, Floyd and Danks.

  132. Villa Nova-Ya December 19th, 2011 at 8:41 am

  133. Yankee Trader December 19th, 2011 at 8:56 am

The Diamondbacks have signed outfielder Jason Kubel, tweets Tom Krasovic. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports confirms the agreement, which is for two years with an option.

Kubel, 29, will play left field for the Diamondbacks according to Rosenthal. The acquisition likely pushes Gerardo Parra to a fourth outfielder role, meaning Arizona is swapping defense and hoping for more offense. Perhaps Parra will become a trade target for other clubs. Kubel hit .273/.332/.434 in 401 plate appearances for the Twins this year, missing nearly two months with a left foot sprain.

Parra put up some pretty good numbers last year. Towers owes the Yankees!! :)
Of course I’m waiting for Justin Upton.

  134. Yankee Trader December 19th, 2011 at 8:59 am

    Erin-

Is that announcement coming from MLB, or leaked by the Japanese club, who are not supposed to know which club made the winning bid. Of course all they had to do was put 2 + 2 together.

    Have a great day.Until later.
