Darvish bidding winner to be announced tonight

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 19, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

According to Yu Darvish’s agent, the Nippon Ham Fighters will announce tonight which Major League team won the bidding for starter Yu Darvish. It will be Tuesday morning in Japan at the time of the announcement, which is expected to come around 8 or 9 p.m. ET.

The Blue Jays and Rangers seem to be the industry favorites to win the rights to Darvish, with the Blue Jays especially emerging as leading contenders. The Yankees, once seen as major players in this process, now seem to be in the background. There will be a real sense of surprise if they’re announced as the winners.

    Since passing on Danny Haren, they have done nothing significant. That was July 2010.

    Maybe one of these pinch hitters should write about that.

  2. Bret The Hitman December 19th, 2011 at 10:35 am

    Message to Japan, Darvish, his agent and his groupies. Nobody here in the US cares.

    That’s going to be a ton of money to be dumped on a wing and a prayer. I’m for going after soler and checking in on Cespedes.

  5. Bret The Hitman December 19th, 2011 at 10:36 am

    Darvish is mystery meat. So is Cespedes. He’s Willy Mo Pena with the added ability to make a YouTube.

  6. Bret The Hitman December 19th, 2011 at 10:38 am

    Darvish is Matsuzaka on a calorie restrictive diet.

    Doubt they make a move on Cespedes though.

    Darvish is a 100 million dollar Jeff Weaver with his floating breaking stuff and his fastball up in the zone.

    Bret-

    As we sit we are a 95 + win team.

    A few tweaks are really all that’s needed.

    If you are talkin’ WS that’s a crapshoot.

    Look at the Sux and the Phillies.

    Designed on paper to be heads and shoulders above everyone else, and to win it all.

    Where did they wind up ?

    By the way, I am not advocating doing nothing.

    Just saying that we need not be in any hurry.

    No move is better than the wrong move.

    That’s my 2 cents.

    ——————

    MTU –

    Respectfully disagree.

    Pitching is so important and the Yankees got performances from 2 starters (currently in the rotation) that I don’t know will be repeated in 2012. Garcia and Nova. Until Nova does it more than once, I’m going to remain skeptical. And as for Garcia – he could just as easily be the 4.62 pitcher he was two years ago with the White Sox as the 3.62 pitcher he was with the Yankees last year.

    They also got MVP-like production from Cano and Granderson which you can’t count on – hopefully any regression there will be countered by improved play from Tex and Alex.

    And certainly Montero should be more productive than Posada was.

    Again though – to me, it’s all about the pitching and I don’t trust the rotation – that said, like I posted on the last thread – the only guy I would want to punt is AJ and given his contract that’s impossible.

    Am I the only one who’s peeved? Either I’m losing my mind or Yankees fans are losing their edge.

    ___

    No we just realize that spending on every free agent out there did nothing for us in the 2000s.

    The strength will come from the guys in the minors.

    Lets be real, we were one A-Rod strike out away from making it to the next round of the playoffs. The team was NOT bad, they just went into a trance after game 1.

    Cashman is thinking long term, not hey let me sign the top person on the market or trade 5 players to get a pitcher

  12. 108 stitches December 19th, 2011 at 10:42 am

    Move in on Kuroda as soon as the Darvish decision is announced. Cashman could consider Beltran to replace Jones (if) a reasonable deal can be worked with Scott Boras.
    Never discount injuries which is wise for Cashman to save some bullets for the 7/31 trading deadline.

  13. Bret The Hitman December 19th, 2011 at 10:44 am

    Don’t worry. Dumpster diving season is right around the corner. Cashman has on his pinstriped bib.

    I don’t expect them to get Cespedes either, mostly because that means giving him a spot on the 25 man roster instead of putting him in AAA to see if he’s real or a George Lucus production. I’d just like to see them inspect him to find out of he’s Luke Skywalker or Princess Leah.

    I would like to see the Yanks move Burnett to an NL team somewhere. I don’t even much care what we get back. Moving him will free up the fifth slot in the rotation for one of the youngsters or Kuroda. If we we have to absorb a 5+ ERA in the fifth slot of the rotation, I would rather do it with one of the minor league kids.

    Exactly – time is on the Yankees side and it’s not like there are any clear upgrades available for the rotation right now.

    The Yankees aren’t going to pay the ransom for a guy like Gio and the guys they can get at a more reasonable price are going to be back of the rotation starters – which the Yankees have enough of already.

    Truly if my options are to trade for the Scott Baker’s of the world or to roll with what they have either in the rotation or the high minors – I’m going to go with the second route.

    I don’t see the Yankees signing Kuroda unless they can trade AJ and I don’t think they can trade AJ so I don’t think they’ll be signing Kuroda.

    If the Yanks ate half of his salary, Burnett wouldn’t look bad as a number-4 pitcher with some upside. A couple of weeks ago, Cashman indicated a willingness to eat $8 million of the $33 million that AJ is owed. So, Cash is already halfway there.

    And from the begining I have said (for that reason as well as others) that I don’t see the Yankees dealing AJ. Instead we’re just going to have to deal with him.

    I think next offseason – when his contract is more manigable and he represents only a 1 year commitment to a team (and assuming the Yankees are willing to take back some of the money) that he will be tradeable.

    For Yankee fans, the only real drama centers around just how aggressive was the Yankee bid? Once that figure leaks out, (and it will), we will know for sure whether Hal was just attempting to placate Yankee fans with a PR move that amounted to nothing short of a charade. Any Yankee bid under $40 Mill would be an absolute sham, and remove doubt as to whether Hal presently has his eye on #28, or the current Yankee payroll and 2014. After Hal has gone to sleep on X-Mas Eve, I sincerely hope The Ghost of Christmas’s To Come swings by and gives Hal a view of Yankee Land down-the-road. Hal’s Father Handed him a legacy, and Hal is Ebeneezer Scrooging the whole kit-and-kaboodle.

    Beltran will get more playing time with the Cards or Cubs than he will with the yankees…..and they don’t need Kuroda. They may like him, but, not for multiple years and he’s not taking one year.

    ————–

    The only way Beltran gets to the Yankees is if they do one of two things A) Deal Swisher; B) Deal Montero.

    They don’t have to do either. They could put him in LF.

    I’m not proposing it, but I wouldn’t mind it either, if it’s just a 2 year deal (Beltran might have to override Boras).

    I think teams have the same thought that you’re sort of voicing – if they’re going to have a back end pitcher with a 5 ERA – why not have that guy be someone from within the system with some upside instead of a 36 year old.
    ============

    Possibly. It would have to be a team that could use a veteran to eat innings, and aren’t quite ready to bring up their own prospects. With AJ’s ability to restrict certain teams, it won’t be easy to move him.

Now, I know W/L is the worst way to judge pitchers but considering it would also cost you a top 5(!!!) prospect the question becomes what is the real value of getting Jimenez. That’s all I meant.

    And that doesn’t even consider that we actually have arms in our system that might be better than Jimenez but… oh just forget it. I don’t care about this enough.

    As long as Montero clogs the DH Slot, the Yanks are better off having an older 4th OF’er that doesn’t need to play consistently in order to improve or stay sharp. Gardner needs to play everyday as he is still learning his craft, and therefore cannot be a 4th OF’er In short, Montero as the DH impacts other positions, And forces the Yanks to carry a 3rd catcher.

    I think AJ could have success in the pen personally…..his stuff would probably play up a bit and he would only have to keep his delivery together for a few hitters….not an entire game. Problem is the Yanks have no need for right handed relievers…….I really think they are going to trade him before ST.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    He generally doesn’t implode until after 3 innings which (might) make him a candidate as a long reliever provided he had the mindset for the role.
    Cashman’s first priority is to deal him but would have to eat some of his contract. It was a bad deal to begin with. Being a .500 pitcher since 2009 doesn’t make him a difference maker.
    I think AJ could have success in the pen personally…..his stuff would probably play up a bit and he would only have to keep his delivery together for a few hitters….not an entire game. Problem is the Yanks have no need for right handed relievers…….I really think they are going to trade him before ST.
    ——————
    I’ll make you a gentleman’s bet on this one – I say (barring injury) AJ is in the rotation all season long.
  150. blake December 19th, 2011 at 12:01 pm
    Hi comet….I have that feeling as well….
  151. MTU December 19th, 2011 at 12:02 pm
    I’d be OK with AJ relieving as long he starts the innning “clean”.
    No way I want to see him w a steady diet of pressure situations.
    I woould be willing to bet you a week’s pay that Cashman would disagree with that!!! I would bet theat the pressure on him is an order of magnitude lower now (NOT that it’s a bad thing). Crap–I still remember the story about Cashman’s little girl crying in the driveway at their home, because her daddy had to go into work one day…
    jacksquat has it right. AJ gets at least 3 months, if not the whole first half as a starter. 1st, I’m banking on an injury or two and 2nd, they gave Javy more than half a season that one year and even though AJ can be awful Javy really gave new meaning to the word.
    Ugly cars are at least unique in their own way. The affordable cars that are currently being sold here in the US, ALL look bland and pretty much the same. I’ll take ANY ugly car over the Cookie Cutter Look Alikes being thrown at us today. This is why the Mini Copper was such a huge sales hit immediately upon release. Nothing new here in the US looked anything like it.
    They tell MLB they accept the bid, MLB tells them who the team is, they announce the bid and team.
