Darvish bidding winner to be announced tonight
According to Yu Darvish’s agent, the Nippon Ham Fighters will announce tonight which Major League team won the bidding for starter Yu Darvish. It will be Tuesday morning in Japan at the time of the announcement, which is expected to come around 8 or 9 p.m. ET.
The Blue Jays and Rangers seem to be the industry favorites to win the rights to Darvish, with the Blue Jays especially emerging as leading contenders. The Yankees, once seen as major players in this process, now seem to be in the background. There will be a real sense of surprise if they’re announced as the winners.

Since passing on Danny Haren, they have done nothing significant. That was July 2010.
Maybe one of these pinch hitters should write about that.
Message to Japan, Darvish, his agent and his groupies. Nobody here in the US cares.
It’s about time.
Literally and figuratively.
That’s going to be a ton of money to be dumped on a wing and a prayer. I’m for going after soler and checking in on Cespedes.
Darvish is mystery meat. So is Cespedes. He’s Willy Mo Pena with the added ability to make a YouTube.
Darvish is Matsuzaka on a calorie restrictive diet.
GB-
Sounds good.
Doubt they make a move on Cespedes though.
Too much dinero.
Darvish is a 100 million dollar Jeff Weaver with his floating breaking stuff and his fastball up in the zone.

As we sit we are a 95 + win team.
A few tweaks are really all that’s needed.
If you are talkin’ WS that’s a crapshoot.
Look at the Sux and the Phillies.
Designed on paper to be heads and shoulders above everyone else, and to win it all.
Where did they wind up ?
By the way, I am not advocating doing nothing.
Just saying that we need not be in any hurry.
No move is better than the wrong move.
That’s my 2 cents.
——————
MTU –
Respectfully disagree.
Pitching is so important and the Yankees got performances from 2 starters (currently in the rotation) that I don’t know will be repeated in 2012. Garcia and Nova. Until Nova does it more than once, I’m going to remain skeptical. And as for Garcia – he could just as easily be the 4.62 pitcher he was two years ago with the White Sox as the 3.62 pitcher he was with the Yankees last year.
They also got MVP-like production from Cano and Granderson which you can’t count on – hopefully any regression there will be countered by improved play from Tex and Alex.
And certainly Montero should be more productive than Posada was.
Again though – to me, it’s all about the pitching and I don’t trust the rotation – that said, like I posted on the last thread – the only guy I would want to punt is AJ and given his contract that’s impossible.

Am I the only one who’s peeved? Either I’m losing my mind or Yankees fans are losing their edge.

No we just realize that spending on every free agent out there did nothing for us in the 2000s.
The strength will come from the guys in the minors.
Lets be real, we were one A-Rod strike out away from making it to the next round of the playoffs. The team was NOT bad, they just went into a trance after game 1.
Cashman is thinking long term, not hey let me sign the top person on the market or trade 5 players to get a pitcher
Move in on Kuroda as soon as the Darvish decision is announced. Cashman could consider Beltran to replace Jones (if) a reasonable deal can be worked with Scott Boras.
Never discount injuries which is wise for Cashman to save some bullets for the 7/31 trading deadline.
Don’t worry. Dumpster diving season is right around the corner. Cashman has on his pinstriped bib.

I don’t expect them to get Cespedes either, mostly because that means giving him a spot on the 25 man roster instead of putting him in AAA to see if he’s real or a George Lucus production. I’d just like to see them inspect him to find out of he’s Luke Skywalker or Princess Leah.

I don’t think making an old team older is the solution.
I also don’t think that Carlos Beltran is going to accept a part time role on the Yankee bench.
I would like to see the Yanks move Burnett to an NL team somewhere. I don’t even much care what we get back. Moving him will free up the fifth slot in the rotation for one of the youngsters or Kuroda. If we we have to absorb a 5+ ERA in the fifth slot of the rotation, I would rather do it with one of the minor league kids.

Exactly – time is on the Yankees side and it’s not like there are any clear upgrades available for the rotation right now.
The Yankees aren’t going to pay the ransom for a guy like Gio and the guys they can get at a more reasonable price are going to be back of the rotation starters – which the Yankees have enough of already.
Truly if my options are to trade for the Scott Baker’s of the world or to roll with what they have either in the rotation or the high minors – I’m going to go with the second route.
I don’t see the Yankees signing Kuroda unless they can trade AJ and I don’t think they can trade AJ so I don’t think they’ll be signing Kuroda.

The only scenario in which I see AJ getting traded is if the Yankees take back an even worse contract:

If Tony Reagins was still a General Manager, I would feel differently, but he’s not.

If the Yanks ate half of his salary, Burnett wouldn’t look bad as a number-4 pitcher with some upside. A couple of weeks ago, Cashman indicated a willingness to eat $8 million of the $33 million that AJ is owed. So, Cash is already halfway there.

“Did you want to talk about the weather, or were you just making chit chat?”
Darvish might turn out be that good, and then again he might not.
Huge risk IMO.

Whoa, Bret, simmer down. No one was attacking you.. my point is Jimenez to some might be considered trash heap pickings, yet you were willing to trade a top prospect for him. Cash got two other trash heap arms for nothing but money. Its just a different approach to accomplishing the same things.

—————–
And from the begining I have said (for that reason as well as others) that I don’t see the Yankees dealing AJ. Instead we’re just going to have to deal with him.
I think next offseason – when his contract is more manigable and he represents only a 1 year commitment to a team (and assuming the Yankees are willing to take back some of the money) that he will be tradeable.
Blake-
But AJ is going to have an incredible season so forget about trading him next year.
The purpose of moving AJ is not to trim salary, per se, but to free the rotation spot for somebody who might do more with it.
I’m curious if the Brewers have an awful first half if they’ll put Greinke on the market – and if they do – will Cashman be interested? He’s passed on him at least a couple of times, but I wonder if seeing Greinke perform in a playoff push may have changed Brian’s mind.
“Don’t you should reserve judgement on Jimenez until after next season? Or did you become an expert on pitching all of a sudden?”
Says the person who just wrote, “Darvish is a 100 million dollar Jeff Weaver with his floating breaking stuff and his fastball up in the zone.” 13 minutes earlier?
Jimenez trash heap pickings? You’re out of your mind.

It has been termed “Adddition by subtraction” by Mr. CB.
For Yankee fans, the only real drama centers around just how aggressive was the Yankee bid? Once that figure leaks out, (and it will), we will know for sure whether Hal was just attempting to placate Yankee fans with a PR move that amounted to nothing short of a charade. Any Yankee bid under $40 Mill would be an absolute sham, and remove doubt as to whether Hal presently has his eye on #28, or the current Yankee payroll and 2014. After Hal has gone to sleep on X-Mas Eve, I sincerely hope The Ghost of Christmas’s To Come swings by and gives Hal a view of Yankee Land down-the-road. Hal’s Father Handed him a legacy, and Hal is Ebeneezer Scrooging the whole kit-and-kaboodle.
I just don’t think that Cashman is that keen on trading away our prospects for pitching talent. He’ll kick the tires to see what it might take, but he rarely pulls the trigger.
Pat,
Talk to me when Darvish actually proves he can get outs over here and posts a season like the one Jimenez had in 2010.

Jimenez is like Hughes at this point: A big question mark. Anybody that would pay premium prices to get him NOW would be quite foolish, IMO.

Project management requires substantial social skills, especially if you’re dealing with a lot of intoverted, creative types of folks.
As long as Montero clogs the DH Slot, the Yanks are better off having an older 4th OF’er that doesn’t need to play consistently in order to improve or stay sharp. Gardner needs to play everyday as he is still learning his craft, and therefore cannot be a 4th OF’er In short, Montero as the DH impacts other positions, And forces the Yanks to carry a 3rd catcher.

Early in spring training Burnett will proclaim to Girardi / Rothschild that “he’s found himself” only to look the same minus some velocity.
He’ll never be accused of being Mariano Rivera or Greg Maddux for repeating his mechanics.
Expect Hughes and Noesi to edge Burnett right out of the starting rotation.
—————
And Burnett, Cash and Larry will talk about how impressed they are with the way he’s throwing and that they think he’s going to have a bounce back year….same bleep different year.
Of course they do – but usually they only tap into them in on-line role playing games. I’m sure Patrick is one of the most popular Elves in all the land

What would they do with Burnett if Noesi adged him out? Bullpen? TripleA? At this point in Burnett’s deal, would the Yanks consider putting him Triple A? It’s less money than they ate with Igawa, but it’s still a significant sum. Making Burnett into a long man might be the way to go.

Burnett will be miserable in the pen as a long man and I’m sure he will make that misery known to anyone and everyone who will listen.
I think for Noesi (or Warren or Phelps) to make the rotation it will be either an injury or a shifting of Hughes to a relief role.

I don’t know about that. AJ has shown himself to be a stand-up guy so far. If he gets beaten out, it’s not like he can blame anyone but himself.

Hmmm, where have I mentioned Darvish’s name this morning? I think you are confused my friend..
I think AJ could have success in the pen personally…..his stuff would probably play up a bit and he would only have to keep his delivery together for a few hitters….not an entire game. Problem is the Yanks have no need for right handed relievers…….I really think they are going to trade him before ST.
Wow, he’s even employed synonyms in his defense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He generally doesn’t implode until after 3 innings which (might) make him a candidate as a long reliever provided he had the mindset for the role.
Cashman’s first priority is to deal him but would have to eat some of his contract. It was a bad deal to begin with. Being a .500 pitcher since 2009 doesn’t make him a difference maker.
Wow a lot of grinchyness here lately. Sending internet eggnog out w/ optional rum.
I don’t think Yankee ownership/management/fans are complacent. MLB has changed the landscape, you can’t just buy all the best players anymore. Even if GMS were still in charge it would be the same.
MTU,
You hiking today? Or are you out Clark Griswalding your mansion?
AJ Burnett is a former Yankee come the first game of the 2012 season!
You put AJ in the Pen, you better bring him in with the bases Empty. All his WP’s will kill the Yanks otherwise.
I woould be willing to bet you a week’s pay that Cashman would disagree with that!!! I would bet theat the pressure on him is an order of magnitude lower now (NOT that it’s a bad thing). jacksquat has it right. AJ gets at least 3 months, if not the whole first half as a starter. 1st, I’m banking on an injury or two and 2nd, they gave Javy more than half a season that one year and even though AJ can be awful Javy really gave new meaning to the word.
Chevy Volt is the biggest fireball since Ford’s Exploding Pinto back in the day. Gimme a Schwinn Stingray with a banana seat and slick tires anyday.
Do you suppose they’ll have the big Darvish announcement on Yu tube ?
Yeah. the Pinto and the Pacer were twin disasters.
At least the “Pacer” didn’t have a tendency to ignite on impact.
Ugly cars are at least unique in their own way. The affordable cars that are currently being sold here in the US, ALL look bland and pretty much the same. I’ll take ANY ugly car over the Cookie Cutter Look Alikes being thrown at us today. This is why the Mini Copper was such a huge sales hit immediately upon release. Nothing new here in the US looked anything like it.
They tell MLB they accept the bid, MLB tells them who the team is, they announce the bid and team.
The “Flinstones” car was pretty ugly but it did have a lot of wood trim so there’s that.
And it was a convertible of sorts. And it had run flat tires on it which was a nice safety feature.
