Here’s the short and to-the-point press release from Major League Baseball.

The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan’s Pacific League have informed Major League Baseball that they have accepted the highest bid for the negotiating rights to 25-year-old pitcher Yu Darvish, it was announced this evening. The highest bid in the posting process was submitted by the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers now have a period of 30 consecutive days to sign Darvish to a Major or Minor League professional contract.

    We were never going to go that high. Let’s go get those OF’s.

    Yay time to spend 50 mil on A-ballers!

    :x Yankees losing Darvish, ok, its hard to win a blind posting, but to let Texas get him a team I find despicable in every single facet of the game. Even worse!

  5. Jerkface December 19th, 2011 at 11:18 pm

    I hope Darvish doesn’t start doing that antler / claw thing.

  6. LGY December 19th, 2011 at 11:19 pm

    Hopefully Darvish plays some serious hardball with the Rangers now.

    Can’t stand the Rangers. It sucks I’m going to have to root against Yu :(

  7. yankee 221 December 19th, 2011 at 11:19 pm

    I don’t see the tradeoff of letting a potential frontline AAAA pitcher go in order to sign 1 or 2 A-ball outfielders

  8. Jerkface December 19th, 2011 at 11:20 pm

    I was hoping if the Yankees missed out, which was obviously expected all this time, that the Cubs would have mystery bidded him.

  9. DONNYBROOK December 19th, 2011 at 11:20 pm

    What’s the weather\temp difference between Arlington and wherever Darvish played his home games in Japan? Gotta be a significant difference.

  10. Ghostwriter December 19th, 2011 at 11:20 pm

    I still think that’s a crazy amount of money for a high level prospect. I wish Texas well with it.

    I’m dying to see what the Yankees bid for this guy.

  11. m December 19th, 2011 at 11:20 pm

    Wow. I didn’t expect the Rangers to win the bid. Toronto would have been a better landing spot as far as the Yankees are concerned.

    I hope it was atleast 45 mil, which I thought would be a pretty good bid at the beginning of the offseason. If the Yanks were trying to seriously win I’d hope they’d bid 55,555,555

  15. Jenna. December 19th, 2011 at 11:21 pm

    I just don’t get this Rangers team. Lol where are they even getting this money to pay for this fee and this guy’s contract? On top of that they refused to pay CJ Wilson and go the extra mile for Lee, but this is where they throw all their money at? Pathetic.

    With that said, I hope he doesn’t sign with them.

  33. Jenna. December 19th, 2011 at 11:27 pm

    I just hope this doesn’t haunt the Yankees. The Angels and Rangers are two teams that always give us a hard time. We’ll manage I guess. I just wish Cashman would make moves that will take us from being a 97 win team to an actual World Champion team…but time will tell.

    The Jays are a 4th place team with or without Darvish.
    Could definitely have rooted for him at least somewhat in that case.

  38. Phranchise December 19th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

    Not sure Hal has no balls given the CC, Tex, Swisher and AJ year. But I am sure enough people realize we can’t have a 100 million due every player on this team. Swisher leaves next year, Grandy in 2, have to pay Cano soon enough, etc. There is limited room no matter who you are to keep tossing out 100 mill especially for a guy you hope is as good as advertsied in the majors.

  39. Ghostwriter December 19th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

    I kind of feel sorry for all of those Jays fans that popped their bottle of champagne, only to learn that Darvish went to the Rangers.

  40. Jerkface December 19th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

    Shouldn’t you all be happy he’s not in the division?

    Uh he went to the Yankees biggest rival for the world series the past 2 years. So no, not happy at all. If he went to a team that was rebuilding, that’d be fine, but to a team that is already built to contend that has been to the WS twice, thats not good.

    Especially with the new Wild Card rules. I don’t wanna get in a 1 game playoff with the Rangers or Angels. Yankees have to win the division.

    Hope they get Kuroda or Danks (price gotta come down eventually!), sign the cubans, dump AJ, keep Noesi in AAA the entire year so he is ready to go next year, let whoever is left from warren/phelps/mitchell be the spot starters, and get Betances and Banuelos their innings.

  47. Pat M. December 19th, 2011 at 11:30 pm

    So Jerkface, do you still think that the Yu Darvish package will be around 70-80 million dollars that you were selling a few months ago ???? As stated it’ll be somewhere in the 110-120 million neighborhood…….Even at 5 years 75 million dollars that contract is far more than what you were promoting…..And will he be worth the 15 million per ??? I think in time he might, but those summer nights in Arlington will be a rude awakening………

  48. DONNYBROOK December 19th, 2011 at 11:30 pm

    - BLAKE -
    You were right about that. In our Division or not, this really hurts.

  49. CB December 19th, 2011 at 11:30 pm

    At the total dollars that Darvish is likely going to cost – his contract just doesn’t add up to good allocation of resources and management.

    People who seen him pitch describe reasonable expectations for him as being a 2.

    To pay and #2 pitcher 100M+ long term is questionable. If you are putting up that much money the pitcher really needs to be able to be considered as a reasonable #1.

    So even if the deal works out optimally – and Darvish meets reasonable expectations – the money still may not be a good investment.

    And on top of that, Darvish carries much more risk. He could be a 2 – but he very well could struggle. It’s very difficult to know.

    It does seem like Texas must feel that he’s a 1. They hardly bothered trying to negotiate or retain Wilson. We’ll see. Very difficult place to pitch and for Darvish to transition to.

    At this point the Yankees off season clarifies itself.

    Go get Kuroda on a one year deal. Try your best to trade AJ Burnett. Resign Jones. Maybe add a lefty to the pen on a low risk deal. And head into spring training.

    Hopefully Cole Hamels camp reads this situation the right way. Hamels hits free agency next winter and the Yankees are going to throw money at him.

    I think the Yanks decided to pass on Darvish due to the uncertainty/risk and they are going to take the other kind of risk to wait for the free agent market next winter while perhaps giving Noesi a shot and seeing how Banuelos/Betances develop.

    This year a short term guy is really what makes sense. Kuroda is that guy. The really need to go sign him now and should try to do so quickly.

    I think not getting Darvish will turn out to be a huge Yankee blunder. Furthermore, the Yanks decision tells me that the Yanks are no longer willing to outspend every other team so that we can count on them to be perennial favorites. I anticipate age-related deterioration of Jeter, Mo, and ARod and regression to the mean for Freddy Garcia and Colon (if they sign himi). I’m not optimistic about a 2012 Championship.

    I’m upset now, but maybe I’ll feel better in the morning.

  57. blake December 19th, 2011 at 11:33 pm

  60. Jerkface December 19th, 2011 at 11:34 pm

    We’ll see what the contract is. The Rangers really love Darvish, so I could see them overspending, but even a CJ Wilson type deal will be worth it. Darvish is beast.

    I think that the best case scenario is that the Rangers break even on this one. Darvish is going to have to be awfully good to be worth this outlay.

    I had been hoping that the Yanks would have prempted the Darvish announcement by announcing the signing of Kuroda.

  62. blake December 19th, 2011 at 11:35 pm

    If I’m Cash, Priority 1 is to counter Darvish with Gio. I aint givin’ away the shop, but Gio is my primary target. The other SP’s available are a significant step down. I would give serious thought to Montero for Gio straight up, and clear that DH Slot that Montero is currently clogging. Then look to plug that DH Slot with maybe Beltran who would also be the 4th OF’er.

    35 starts?

  70. Yank1 December 19th, 2011 at 11:39 pm

    I think Cash is hesitant to bump Hughes from the rotation, doesn’t think he can trade Burnett (NTC, wife doesn’t fly, very few places he could go to outside the AL East), and wants Noesi as the 6th starter incase Garcia flares up…and knows Garcia took less to stay here and won’t remove him from the rotation until he gives them a reason to.

    I really wonder how aggressive he really has been in pursuing pitching. Yeah maybe if he could get Gio for Romine/Warren or something, but I think Cash thinks his rotation is set…. not because he loves it, but because he doesn’t want to make a move because he doesn’t know who to remove.

    The fact that they refused to make a decision at all last year and screwed their ace as a result shows that they don’t want to make tough decisions.

  71. Jerkface December 19th, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    35 starts?

    Or 33 starts, pretty sure if a #2 makes all their games they get 35 starts. 33 probably more realistic.

  72. yankeefeminista December 19th, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    Donny, you don’t worry about Montero “clogging” a DH spot. You may darn sure no one else clogs it *for* Montero. Alex and co. will get their DH days when Montero catches. Problem solved.

  73. CB December 19th, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    Also – whatever the total Darvish signs for – in terms of real dollars – the cost of the contract will be significantly higher than its nominal value.

    To have to pay 52M up front and then pay him say another 50-70M is an extraordinarily costly deal.

    That is much more expensive than the usual contract structured as say 6yrs/120M. That upfront payment is exorbitantly expensive.

    And the Rangers aren’t going to benefit from any savings in taxes as they aren’t over the limit.

    This is has a chance to be a massively expensive deal in terms of real dollars.

  74. Jerkface December 19th, 2011 at 11:41 pm

    and wants Noesi as the 6th starter incase Garcia flares up

    This would be dumb. They messed up his inning progression last year so I dont think he would be a good bet to start. He needs to be in AAA for most of the year building his innings up. Banuelos and Betances as well need to hit 150 IP

    Ghost, what I meant to say is, they can’t really tell the difference between a “good” hitter, and a great one. That’s why they get so exasperated with people who refuse to trade Montero. They honestly don’t know what the big deal is. They assume you can just replace “offense.”

  88. pat December 19th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

    Wonder how CJ Wilson feels about the Rangers right about now?

  89. Bret The Hitman December 19th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

    Kuroda. Ditch Burnett. Sign Beltran for DH. Groom Montero to catch in AAA to start the year. Rock and roll at the trade deadline with Montero + for King Felix.

  90. Phranchise December 19th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

    Darvish was making 6 mill plus 6 outside endosements. Kuroda isn’t going to see that money. At the end of the day I think the price for Danks comes down and we get that second lefty we could use. If not Kuroda. But Cashman has to stop playing like this is his own money too. The Soriano money from last year is a case in point. They had it to use and blew it. I feel like these days it isn’t so much about the money and more about Cashman making his mark and proving he can do it without the $. They need a solid starter. They could use a little more of a dynamic hitter than an aging Jones in the OF as well. We need guys who can get on base, get some hits, work counts and generate tough outs. Not home run guys on the bench.

  91. blake December 19th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

    The Yankees need a young impact bat long term a lot more than they need a “#2 starter”….they have pitching help on the way…..you can’t find elite bats under the age of 25 and although Montero is still unproven….just the potential that he could be one is something you just can’t give away these days.

    It will dawn on them eventually. Cashman has been quite prescient with his decision-making. The only major issue that I would take issue with him on is how he handled Joba. He should have sent Joba to Triple-A (or even to Double) to get his act together, after Hughes beat him out. It was a terrible mistake to give up on him as a starter the way that they did.

  125. Ghostwriter December 20th, 2011 at 12:19 am

    Darvish for Wilson is a wash, and possibly a downgrade. I just don’t think that Texas needs Fielder, they have more than enough offense.

  126. Bret The Hitman December 20th, 2011 at 12:21 am

    But if you had the choice between Fielder vs. Hamilton long term I think you choose Fielder because Hamilton is so fragile and possibly was a roider.

  127. Bret The Hitman December 20th, 2011 at 12:23 am

    Guerrero is gone as their DH. They had Michael Young playing 1b.

    I think Fielder makes sense for them in that stadium.

    What other AL team is going to give Fielder 8 years?

    I believe Fielder wants to win and he wants to go to an AL team to have the DH option later in his career and he has an opportunity to rake HR’s in that Stadium and go toe-to-toe with Pujols every year.

    As I said, i’m pretty much just guessing, but, there’s more that nobody’s talking about. Chamberlain may have a high threshhold for pain, because he said it was stinging well before he was shut down. Said there was no pop, just a little trouble getting loose. I think about Mantle and Koufax. When most would need a wheelchair to get around, he was playing. Koufax only quit because Jobe and Kerlan told him that his arm would or could be crippled for life with one more pitch. I’ve have pain before, but, nothing like they were describing what they had to feel.

    Actually, I was against the Haren deal. Frankly, I felt that keeping Hughes, Chamberlain, AND Kennedy was the plan that should have been followed. Now do I appreciate Granderson? Absolutely. I know IPK pissed off management with his attitude, but in him I saw a swing-and-miss pitcher, which is what he is. He’ll give up the gopher ball, but he’s talented.

    But what do I know? I wanted to keep Ross Ohlendorf and Tyler Clippard too.

  141. GreenBeret7 December 20th, 2011 at 12:44 am

    Pat, there’s two hitter’s parks in the NL West and Arizona is one. I saw a lot of his late night game against all teams. He was impressive against most of them. Hard to complain about having to part with him, but, Granderson was too hard to pass on. I would have felt even worse had they demanded Hughes. Hughes is going to win big this coming season. It sounds like he’s building himself from the ground up…that he’s learning that even gifts can be lost if you don’t treat ‘em right. 20 wins and a sub 3.00 ERA, maybe in a couple of years if all goes well, but, I’ll be happy to see the average Andy Pettitte type seasons…16-17 wins, a sub 4.00 ERA and around 160-170 strikeouts, year in and year out.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    Triple,

    If Banuelos gets called up the second half of this year, and is impressive, then management may ask themselves this question: Why pay $20M/year for Hamels, when you’re already paying CC $24M/year, and this young kid, who’s also a lefty and cost-controlled for years, may do just as well? Also, when they’re about to get out from under the AJ contract, and get below the new luxury tax threshold, why add to it?

    Chamberlain can start. Whether he will is debatable and not likely. Nova has developed into a ood young arm, that’s now allegedly frequently asked for in trade talks. Where would we have been without him last season? Chamberlain still has a role, particularly if Mo retires and Soriano opts out or is traded, which I expect at some point prior to his contract expiration. He could easily be the setup man for Robertson or vice versa.

    I really dont know what the Yankees are doing at this point. They either posted nothing more than a token bid for Darvish knowing full well that it would not be enough or they were fully commited to getting Darvish and were simply outbid by the posting fee of the Rangers.

    If it was nothing more than a token bid, then why waste your time? What were they accomplishing? They look like the Mets – making a quasi attempt at a big ticket acquisition but never truly invested enough to be serious.

    If they were commited, then obviously it is an admission by the organization that they are fully aware that they are short in the starting rotation no matter how much rhetoric they spew by saying that they are comfortable with what they already have. If that is the case, then why didnt they at least talk to C.J. Wilson (proven commodity, left handed, 20-something starter). Between their own posting fee and the cost/years it would have taken to sign Darvish, they probably would have spent the same amount. Is Darvish “that” much more of an upgrade that the Yankees were comfortable to not even talk to Wilson?

    Again, I really dont know what they are thinking.

    While Hamels has a lifetime 3.39 ERA, which probably translates to a 4.40 ERA in the AL East, which may not be too dissimilar from AJ Burnett’s 4.375 ERA while in the AL. Additionally, to say that:

    Triple…..The Haren deal was all set to go and then at the last minute Zona wanted Cashman to switch Joba for Robertson to go along with Ivan Nova….This deal was done and several of the D-Back players knew and went home thinking Joba and Nova were going to be their teammates the next day…..Then along came Joe Saunders and Cashman said no to moving Robertson……

  158. J. Alfred Prufrock December 20th, 2011 at 1:06 am

    It always seemed to me that there was something behind the scenes driving events with Chamberlain, a health issue, or possibly some kind of behavioral problem…
    ////

    Ghost, this is of course possible, but I really don’t think so. To some degree, perceived health/stamina and “attitude” may have been influential, but I also think the more decisive truth is far less enigmatic, although probably more distasteful, in its sheer prosaic wrong-headedness.

    There are situations in life where artistry and talent suffer at the hands of mediocrity and bad management. In fact, it happens every day. This, I believe, is one of those situations. My hope is, the new pitching coach. He comes with his own pedigree, and already has a good working relationship with the pitcher, who has the kind of ability the pitching coach not only can appreciate, but properly mentor. It’s not out of the question, any way.

    Good night.

  159. Triple Short of a Cycle December 20th, 2011 at 1:06 am

    Obviously the price to trade for pitchers is super high in today’s baseball which is more of a reason you need to strike when given prime opportunities.

    Haren and now Darvish.

  160. Pat M. December 20th, 2011 at 1:06 am

  165. DaSaint007 December 20th, 2011 at 1:10 am

    No, you don’t need to strike! You need to develop talent organically (cheaply). Look at IPK, Hughes, and Chamberlain. While they’ve not all had equal success, they will still be relatively cheap for several more years for their teams.

    FA pitching costs upwards of $20M/year now – today. Teams like the Yankees are seeing the writing on the wall, and will anchor their rotation with 1 or 2 high-priced, very talented pitchers, 1 reliable low-cost veteran, and 2 young affordable arms. The Yankees have no intention of having 3 starting pitchers making over $20M/year on average, while they’re carrying contracts such as Tex and Arod for the next several years. Maybe when Jeter’s contract retires – er, expires, they’ll be additional flexibility, but not for a couple years at least.

  166. GreenBeret7 December 20th, 2011 at 1:11 am

    Simon, I don’t know where got that fastball, but, he didn’t have it with the yankee system. Still gives up more inherited runners than I’d like, but, he’s been pretty good in Washington. Ohlendorff has been released. Something always seemed to happen with his games, whether it was no run support or the bullpen but, he had the arm.

    3-way trade:

    Yanks: Felix Hernandez

    Padres: Betances (+ 1 lesser minor leaguer from Yanks if necessary)

    Mariners: Hughes, Rizzo, Hiroyuki Nakajima (sign and trade), Romine + ?

    The idea is to keep Montero but get Seattle some offense.

    Thoughts? Fair deal? Ideas for modifications?

    First, are you a Mariners fan? :)

    I thought that package to Mariners might be a little light, but not laughable. Hughes is still fairly well regarded. Rizzo absolutely destroyed AAA in 2011 and is like 21 or 22 only. Nakajima all-star in Japan, another japanese player for Seattle, probably better than what they have. Romine top 100 potential quality catcher.

  170. Bret The Hitman December 20th, 2011 at 1:19 am

    18 pts in 19 min. tonight for Kemba. He shot poorly but took the ball to the rack aggressively as usual. He’s so quick to the hoop his size is not as big a factor as the scouts thought. He will be the steal of that draft.

  171. sammiejohnson December 20th, 2011 at 1:25 am

    I do live out in the M’s area (Rosy-land). So I do follow them.

    They are not trading Felix for a #3 or #4 SP that the Yankees would obviously be giving up on.

    A SD 1B who hit like .144 (yes sss) in the bigs last year.

    An unproven Japanese SS who most see as a utility IF.

    And a AAA C.

    For one of the best pitchers in MLB? Just is not happening.

  172. jacksquat December 20th, 2011 at 1:40 am

    Well, not trying to fleece the Mariners, I thought the idea was at least somewhat close to fair. It could be adjusted/sweetened a little. IMO, the Mariners either should add significant offense ($$$) and go for it while they still have Felix for 3 more years and are paying him almost $20mil/year, or they should trade him for several good players/potentially very good prospects. Seeing what the Angels and Rangers just did, standing pat seems doomed to failure.

  173. Ruby Wednesday December 20th, 2011 at 1:45 am

    Done with the Darvish nonsense now.

    Apparently now its back to the same old ridiculous fantasy trade proposals that don’t have a prayers chance in hell of happening.

  174. sammiejohnson December 20th, 2011 at 1:45 am

    I agree that the M’s should trade him also. It could only help them. But it would take a deal by the Yankees that really ‘hurt’ to pry him loose.

  175. Bret The Hitman December 20th, 2011 at 1:47 am

    This is more like it

    Mariners Get:

    Jesus Montero
    Ivan Nova
    Eduardo Nunez
    JR Murphy

    Yankees Get:

    Felix Hernandez

  176. sammiejohnson December 20th, 2011 at 1:55 am

    Remember I am a Yankees fan too, Bret. But I doubt that even gets it done. I am more than willing to bet that just to get the M’s to listen, Montero, both B’s + would be the starting point.

    If I am Cashman, I keep the kids….

  177. GreenBeret7 December 20th, 2011 at 1:59 am

    take for what it’s worth from MLBTR.

    •There’s a consensus among international MLB people that the Yankees are “BIG” on Yoenis Cespedes, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus (on Twitter).
    •Cespedes is close to establishing residency in the Dominican Republic, reports Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. The Cuban outfielder still needs to secure a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control since his residency is not permanent. The process could take two weeks, but he should be cleared to sign sometime in January.

    also:

    apparently, the Cubs are thinking about moving Sean Marshall. No word on what they’d want in a trade, but, it won’t be cheap. Marshall, would be a major pick-up for any team, including the Yanks

  178. DaSaint007 December 20th, 2011 at 2:00 am

    Morning, traveling back North shortly for the Holidays. I guess I won’t pack any shorts :-)

    I disagree I don’t think the rotation is garbage, but I’ve said consistently it’s not a championship quality rotation. Hope there will still be a move along the way.

    I see all the glass is half empty crowd was out on Darvish. So many experts so much time, after all the Rangers who have made it to the WS the last two years scouted every game he pitched and ponyed up with the cash. What do they know though, others here know far better then their organization, time will tell I guess.

  183. raymagnetic December 20th, 2011 at 6:05 am

    “cuz our rotation is garbage after CC. nova, hughes, garcia, burnett.”

    Amazing how garbage can win you 97 games a year ago :roll:

  184. jacksquat December 20th, 2011 at 6:10 am

    For that rotation to remain the same, 4 need to repeat last year (on average at least), and Hughes basically needs to pitch like Colon did, who had a mid-3′s era into September. Can be done. I think the criticism some have is there doesn’t seem to be a clear, strong #2 for the playoffs. Of course the pitching wasn’t really the problem in the 2011 postseason.

  185. raymagnetic December 20th, 2011 at 6:11 am

    Last I checked the Yankees won more games than the Rangers a year ago and all the Rangers realistically did was swap CJ Wilson for Yu Darvish.

    The Rangers may not even win their division next year as the Angels will be much better.

  186. 108 stitches December 20th, 2011 at 6:35 am

    The Angels made their big splash so the Rangers feel that they’ve made a counter move. They would be smart not to deal any of their pitchers like Feldman etc. to allow a year of culture change, different pitching routines, and learning major league hitters by Darvish. He won’t make an immediate splash.
    Regardless of what the Yankees bid amount was, Cashman can feel free to fill out the roster without Darvish hanging over his head.

  187. Gary December 20th, 2011 at 6:40 am

    Regardless of what the Yankees bid amount was, Cashman can feel free to fill out the roster without Darvish hanging over his head.
    ____________________________________________________________________________

    With noted back benchers and for trades he refuses to make? I don’t think Cash loses any sleep over this. He has talked over and over about how things are set and he sure isn’t going to give up on his strategy of not trading anything that anybody else wants. Basically I think we are going to the next season with the guys we have.

  188. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2011 at 6:48 am

    Good morning.
    The season is still a long ways off and Darvish is going to need to replace CJ Wilson’s 16 wins in a ballbpark that ranks #! in homeruns allowed.

    Time to move on with this rumor:

    There’s a consensus among international MLB people that the Yankees are “BIG” on Yoenis Cespedes, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus (on Twitter).
    Cespedes is close to establishing residency in the Dominican Republic, reports Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. I’m over the Darvish saga.

    Lets just roll with the Kids …… and pray Nova and Hughes take some steps foward.

  190. RhapsodyInBlue December 20th, 2011 at 6:51 am

    Let’s see if Yu can Cowboy up in the Texas heat.

    I’d have to think that’l create a little home sickness.

    The first time I flew into Dallas the first thing i thought was that this place is in the middle of the desert.

    But I grew up in upstate NY where it is lush and green montains, lakes, rivers and streams.

    Good luck Yu but I hope you suck big in a Texas kinda way.

  191. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2011 at 6:58 am

    I’d be surprised if Darvish is willing to sign for anything less than 15M/year as he made 12M this past season in salary and endorsements in Japan. 5-6 years with a 75-90M investment after a 51.7M posting fee.

  192. Gary December 20th, 2011 at 7:00 am

    There’s a consensus among international MLB people that the Yankees are “BIG” on Yoenis Cespedes, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus (on Twitter).

    YT I saw this also, don’t know what to make of it as I’ve seen other rumors that have the yanks having no interest in any of the cubans. Top that off with Cashman comments of the offense is set and he sees spending no major dollars on offense besides adding a couple of bench players that can wait.

    Like anything else this winter I guess you have to err on the pessamistic outlook. So far you would have been right.

  193. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2011 at 7:06 am

    Gary-

    I don’t make much of these rumors. Toronto was rumored to have made a “whopper” bid on Darvish. Perhaps that meant that they were bidding a large amount of McDonalds stock to win the bid from the Nippon Ham Corporation! :)

  194. blake December 20th, 2011 at 7:14 am

    Jacksquat,

    From last night…..I like the thought but I think its probably light on the Mariners side. Th Ms seem to be valuing Felix even more than they should be…….in reality they should have traded him when Cashman opened up the system for him in the past…….because I doubt he would now.

    I think the Yanks sign Cespedes and maybe Soler too……..

  195. blake December 20th, 2011 at 7:16 am

    Yu better not hang breaking balls in Arlington.

  196. blake December 20th, 2011 at 7:29 am

    Yankees @YankeeSource 6h A scout: I’m not sure a 51.7 million dollar bid should be considered “winning.” Buerhle only cost 58 million dollars.

  197. Triple Short of a Cycle December 20th, 2011 at 7:33 am

    So the Yankees are big on Yoenis Cespedes who has no major league experience and is a mystery yet Darvish was too much of an unknown

  198. raymagnetic December 20th, 2011 at 7:36 am

    The bidding on Darvish will be higher than cespedes’ entire contract.

    If they even sign him at all.

  199. blake December 20th, 2011 at 7:39 am

    Yea I think Cespedes’s contract will be less than the posting fee for Darvish……for similar money Im sure the yanks would rather have Darvish because he’s more projectable and better fills a need…….but Darvish may cost 70-80 millon more in total dollars……so its nit really an apples to apples.

  200. Mike Ri December 20th, 2011 at 7:39 am

    I agree . . i bet the Yanks placed a legit bid …… nothing you can do but place your best bid.

  201. Villa Nova-Ya December 20th, 2011 at 7:39 am

    I think Soler, yes; Cespedes, no.

  202. Villa Nova-Ya December 20th, 2011 at 7:42 am

    The Yankees do not look to be spending large sums of money on long-term contracts on players who represent high risk.

  203. blake December 20th, 2011 at 7:42 am

    Cespedes agent is reportedly asking to start at Chapman’s 6/30…..that’s fine…..they can ask for whatever they want…..but I can’t see a 26 year old outfielder getting significantly more than a LHP that throws 103 mph.

  204. Mgumpher December 20th, 2011 at 7:58 am

    I don’t think the Yankees were going give up enough money to get passed the Jay and Texas, and I don’t think it was a bad move on their part. That is a lot of money for a pitcher who is an unknown quanity for the majors. Even if he pitches well enough to cover CJ Wilson’s wins, that is big money spent for no gain.

    Texas had the Angels nipping at their heels last season, and the Angels had their struggles. The Angels addressed a big need at offense that might be enough to push them over Texas, though I don’t think they needed Wilson and doubt he will be much of a factor to the Angels near the top of their rotation.

    The Rangers blew a ton of money, and to get Darvish to sign they will have to blow a lot more, and I just don’t see it being worth the amount spent. Darvish will be under pressure to sign with the Rangers, but I don’t see him going Dice-K’s route with agreeing to less to get the deal done.

    Darvish has his value amount in mind already. While he could agree to less, he doesn’t have to, and he can go where he wishes next year. Texas needs to get the deal done.

    I’m fine with the Yankees not getting Darvish. They could have eaten the cost of the posting fee easier than the Rangers can, but why throw money away that could be allocated better? That posting fee system got broken by Boston, and Texas just made it worse.

  205. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 7:59 am

    No surprises there.

    The Jays and Rangers were considered the favorites. Very risky move IMO.

    Time to move on.

    Looks like Nakajima, Soler, and possibly Kuroda to me.

    Long shots would be Cespedes, Danks, and Prado.

    Yankees seem to have their eyes on next year’s FA class.

  206. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:07 am

  207. blake December 20th, 2011 at 8:11 am

    Hey MTU,

    Yea I agree…..no surprises….however I didn’t really think it would be the Rangers.

    I think its a little dangerous to look totally towards next winter’s FA class…..we’ve been down that toad before and things can change between now and then. Personally I think Hamels is going to test the market…..but if the Yanks can improve themselves now without paying too much I absolutely think they should push a little to win now…….not give away the future…..but push a little.

    I think there is a championship window with this club that may be closing soon for a little while and id like to see them take advantage if possible……JMO.

  208. blake December 20th, 2011 at 8:12 am

    MTU,

  209. Triple Short of a Cycle December 20th, 2011 at 8:17 am

    but why throw money away that could be allocated better?

    ———————————————————–

    Like signing Soriano?

  210. rl1856 December 20th, 2011 at 8:18 am

    It all comes down to money doesn’t it ? How much you pay vs how much you receive in return.

    Rangers won the rights to Yu and will reportedly spend $100mm over 5y before he signs a contract.

    How good does he have to be to justify a cost of $100mm over 5yr ?

    I think he will be a good, but not great US pitcher. Remember that not every dominant AA pitcher becomes an ace in the ML and the Japanese league is about equivalent to our AA minor leagues.

    15w / 190ip / 4ish ERA / 1.2-1.4 Whip More importantly, I think he will not be much of a factor in the post season due to fatique. At some some point he will be on the DL with an arm injury. I don’t see him being a workhouse innings eating staff ace…more like a very good #2-3.

    So lets put this together. 2yrs/ 30w and mediocre post season performance, possible injury in yr 4. Bounce back in yr 5 as he pitches for a new contract.

    If the Yankees had been the high bidders, would we be happy if this is what we received in return ? I don’t think so.

    Give the kids a shot.

  211. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:19 am

    Blake-

    If is the same he is a stud.

    Could be a fast mover.

    Understand your thoughts on the ‘window of oportunity” but that is just not the way the Yankees seem to be going at it right now.

    The seem to have a more pantient and systematic approach.

    The GMS days are likely gone forever in the sense of trying to acquire every shiny new toy on the Market.

    I don’t mind that. I kinda like the develop from within thing along with strategic, well-thought out trades and FA acquisitions.

    I hope they grab at least 1 of the Cubans.

    Kuroda or Colon can hold it down for 1 more season.

    Adjustments are always made at the TD too.

  212. austinmac December 20th, 2011 at 8:23 am

    Marc Carig, who correctly said the Yankees bid for Darvish would fall far short, also said they would not be in on Cespedes. Cashman says they don’t need offense. Cespedes will not happen.

    Writers always expect Yankee involvement, but times have changed. I hope they consider Soler.

  213. dogface December 20th, 2011 at 8:28 am

    Writers always expect Yankee involvement

    ===========================

    None of the regular beat guys expected anything to come of Darvish bid. Seems they are getting the picture as it relates to the practice of patience the Cashman has preached and indeed adhered to. On a national level, I think the writers still expect the Yankees to be in on everything, but the beats get it.

  214. DocTodd December 20th, 2011 at 8:28 am

    So basically the team that got eliminated in the first round is the same team, minus Posada, plus Montero.

  215. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:29 am

    Mac-

    The Yankees could use some additonal strength in the OF pipeline especially any guys who are close to ML ready.

    For that reason, if the price is right, I think they might take a shot at Cespedes.

    If not, then they should add Soler.

    Heck. They might even add both.

    The rotation will be fortified as the opportunity arises.

    Kuroda or Colon could hold it down until next year.

    We may not be WS bound with that but we almost certainly will make the playoffs again.

    Next year I think we see some real changes.

    I like player development as well and its a necessary change in todays baseball world…..however the Yanks are still about winning titles (at least they are supposed to be) and I can tell you if even a hint starts to spread across the fanbase that the Yanks aren’t doing everything they can to win…..it’ll start showing in the stands and in ticket sales.

  219. blake December 20th, 2011 at 8:33 am

    All that said……if two big x factors go the Yankees way next season (Hughes and Montero)…..then that’s essentially the same as adding impact players via free agency or trade. They are still one of the best teams in baseball if they so nothing else……but they coukd improve in some areas and if it makes sense to do so I hope they will

  220. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:34 am

    Blake-

    Maybe so.

    I think they can win it all with a few improvements.

    They do not have to be major IMO.

    The difference between success and failure last year were a few lousy at bats at the wrong time and maybe a few bad breaks.

    No matter how the Yankees set themselves up on paper, or any team for that matter, luck plays a
    signifcant role in who gets the trophy.

    I think next year will bring signifcant changes. Not so much this year.

    I can live with that.

    I think the Yankees should operate like Hamels is going to re-sign with Philly…..then if he doesn’t 1) you wont be desperate for him 2) you can still flex the budget to add a real co-ace if you want.

    If Hamels hits the market the Yankees will have no excuse…..they can’t say he’s not good enough or young enough….or too.much of a risk

    A very strong FA Pitching class that includes guys like Hamels, Cain, Greinke, Danks, sanchez and others.

    Knowledge of Montero’s capabilites.

    These are just a few things I can see.

    My crystal ball has it’s limits.

    The Yankees do not have all of their eggs in one basket IMO.

    :)

  225. dogface December 20th, 2011 at 8:40 am

    Next year I think we see some real changes

    =========================

    Probably some, but I think a lot of it may be from within. If Mo retires, perhaps Robertson or Soriano assumes the role of closer. Perhaps Banuelos and/or Betances is ready to assume a key role on the pitching staff. We’ll see what happens in RF, but based on what’s projected to be available, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Swisher back on a 3 year deal or something. Swisher’s October failings can be frustrating, but the guy has been very consistent as a Yankee and is probably a little underrated by most. He’s probably a Top 25 outfielder right now. With Cano and Granderson presumedly having their 2013 options picked up, the Yankees will have $151M spent on 8 players. Will be there be room for a big free agent splash? Maybe. If Hamels is out there, and I think that’s less than a 50/50 prop, I think the Yankees will be in on him.

  226. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:40 am

    Blake-

    Hamels may or may not want to take Yankee money.

    Lee didn’t want it.

    Next year’s FA clas also includes several other high value targets.

    Trades may also be possible on some guys.

    Yankee Trader December 20th, 2011 at 8:34 am
    Sign Kuroda 1year D-backs out
    Sign Nakajima, Soler
    Offense improves with Swisher in walk year,Tex improving from left side,healthy ARod and Gardner getting on base
    Fill out the bench
    Play Montero every day.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sounds like a winning recipe. Factor in Noesi as help during the year.
  228. upstate kate December 20th, 2011 at 8:41 am
    good morning
    I like your crystal ball MTU.
    I didn’t really think the Yankees would get Darvish, so I am not disappointed. I do still think Cashman will surprise us w/ a pitcher before ST.
  229. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:42 am
    Dog-
    I said OF. That might include GGBG too.
    It depends.
    MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:19 am
    Blake-
    If is the same he is a stud.
    Could be a fast mover.
    Understand your thoughts on the ‘window of oportunity” but that is just not the way the Yankees seem to be going at it right now.
    The seem to have a more pantient and systematic approach.
    The GMS days are likely gone forever in the sense of trying to acquire every shiny new toy on the Market.
    I don’t mind that. I kinda like the develop from within thing along with strategic, well-thought out trades and FA acquisitions.
    I hope they grab at least 1 of the Cubans.
    Kuroda or Colon can hold it down for 1 more season.
    Adjustments are always made at the TD too.
    ___________________________________________________________________________
    MTU, I agree with much of what you said. I also agree with Blake, I think perhaps there is a narrow window of opportunity, but I’m not really that optomistic about that. I think there is such a thing as perhaps going to far in the opposite direction vrs the GS doctrine. That’s the danger. I think the clubs that are agressive will be the ones that will carry the day.
  231. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:44 am
    Thank you Kate.
    It’s worth about what everyone else’s is.
    maybe we’ll still get you Garza.
    I can always hope :)
  233. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:47 am
    Gary-
    Do you you always catch Dorado by being aggressive, or does trolling and patience sometimes work ?
    maybe the Yankees are agressive in a quiet sort of way.
    Being showy doesn’t always cut it.
    For instance, I think the Rangers took a huge gamble with Darvish. It may or may not pay off but the the bet was an enormous one and is fraught with risk along with the potential reward.
    Make no mistake about that.
  234. Shame Spencer December 20th, 2011 at 8:50 am
    MTU December 20th, 2011 at 7:59 am
    Looks like Nakajima, Soler, and possibly Kuroda to me.
    Yankees seem to have their eyes on next year’s FA class.
    ——————-
    I don’t think that’s a bad thing, either..
  235. upstate kate December 20th, 2011 at 8:51 am
    The Rangers had to do something after the Angels signed Pujols and CJ.
  236. Joe from Long Island December 20th, 2011 at 8:52 am
    It will be very interesting to see if the Rangers give Darvish the money they refused to give to CJ, someone who had a track record of success with their team. If they do, then that suggests to me that they saw something they didn’t care for in CJ.
    If they do sign him, I think it is a very risky move by Texas.
    Don’t they play in domed, climate-controlled stadiums in Japan?
    On another note, given what Kevin Towers had to say about Kuroda, I wonder if Kuroda might not happen in NY.
    And, given what we’ve seen about the price of starting pitching, I further wouldn’t be surprised if:
    1. Cash is not able to make a deal for a SP, and the Yanks go with what they’ve got
    2. Cash finds a taker for AJ
    3. Cole Hamels and his agent decide that, heck, they should get in on all of this next off season.
    4. Cash makes some back channel moves, and whispers $$$ into the ear of Hamel/his agent, to help poor Cole make the right decision.
  237. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:52 am
    Shame-
    Nor do I.
    :)
  238. Shame Spencer December 20th, 2011 at 8:55 am
    “maybe the Yankees are agressive in a quiet sort of way.”
    I’d say Cash flying out to CC’s house as soon as he hit free agency was a sign that we haven’t lost our aggressiveness :) We go balls out when it matters.
  239. Shame Spencer December 20th, 2011 at 8:56 am
    upstate kate – I’m wondering if signing Darvish is enough.. Texas has now made it to the WS two years in a row and lost. Over under on them getting the opportunity again this season? Pretty slim, IMO.
  240. MTU December 20th, 2011 at 8:56 am
    Joe-
    Unless Hamels absolutely loves playing in Philly, and they are willing to really pony up he would be mad not to test the FA market.
    No self-respecting agent would let him do otherwise because he can make himself a boatload of cash.
    Heck. he might even be able to play for a team that wins lot’s of WS’s.
    ;)
    So I was recently placed on probation and I get random drug tests. I have not taken my initial drug test yet, but I pretty much know it’s going to be either tomorrow or the day after that. I currently have a prescription for oxycodone, but I smoke my pills and I also smoke heroin. I would like to know if the oxycodone and heroin would come up the same on a drug test or different. I really want to pass my first drug test so I don’t have to test as often and eventually get taken off the testing. So does anyone know about the drug tests or how I can pass my first test?.
