Chavez takes center stage

[2]With the Nakajima negotiations finished, Eric Chavez is suddenly at the forefront of the Yankees rumor mill, and of course, that makes him suddenly one of the more prominent free agents available.

Didn’t take long for Chavez’s market to emerge, with Jon Heyman tweeting this afternoon that the Padres, Nationals and Rays are also interested. [3]Of course, not one of those teams has an everyday opening at third base — Chase Headley, Ryan Zimmerman and Evan Longoria are regulars, if not everyday players — but all three teams could use Chavez as a reserve corner infielder, which is exactly the role the Yankees can offer.

To be honest, Chavez seemed perfectly content last season to view himself as a backup. He seemed to agree that he couldn’t hold up to an everyday role, so playing time might not be much of an issue in signing him. And it’s hard to imagine any team being willing to give over-the-top money to a guy who hasn’t played more than 58 games in a season since 2007.

So, this is about an offer from the Yankees and a decision from Chavez. Hard to imagine anyone offering a significantly different combination of money and playing time.
