Epstein: “I felt like (Cashman) was always lurking”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 01, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

For longtime rivals, Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein have always seemed to have a friendly respect for one another, and yesterday they spoke together at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

Tyler Kepner used the occasion to take a look at the relationship between Cashman and Epstein.

Cashman: “The best compliment you can give is when you start studying your opponent. We actually took a lot of different things that (the Red Sox) were doing and have acclimated into our business.”

Epstein: “We tried to focus on just executing our strategy and building our organization the way we wanted to. We got some rewards from that. But I was never able to totally relax, because I felt like (Cashman) was always lurking.”

As Kepner points out: You have to wonder how long it will be before Cashman and Epstein finally make a trade with one another now that Epstein is the general manager of the Cubs, and the former Cubs GM Jim Hendry is a Cashman assistant with the Yankees.

    Pineda for Castro.

  2. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Whether or not one thinks that Cashman is doing a good job, at some point, like Theo, he may move on to another job in MLB, if only to attempt a new challenge. If so, I don’t want Eppler to succeed him. I think it would be time to hire from the outside.

  3. JK February 1st, 2012 at 7:10 pm

Epstein was interested in Arod, Contreras, Marte, Pavano, Vazquez both times, Granderson & Swisher.

Some of those deals Cashman saved Theo from disaster, but he was always worried about Cashman beating him to a player.

  4. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Back to the same old saw? I’m sure that Eppler made the decision on putting Chamberlain in the bullpen. That sort of thing is an organizational decision.

  5. tucker February 1st, 2012 at 7:22 pm

I’ll give Theo this much credit: He knows when to bail. The good ship BoSox is taking on water with a micromanaging president, a distracted owner, a pile of bad contracts and no prospect bridge in sight.

The team still has a lot of talent, but it has just as many questions.

“And the LoHud award for most tortured segue goes to…”

    stuckey-

you don’t run into people with your kind of sarcasm much on athletic fields.

    i think it’s a natural selection thing.

  7. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 7:28 pm

“Back to the same old saw?”

Hardly. Eppler was only appointed Asst GM yesterday, which makes him the putative heir apparent, so my comment is quite topical.

It has more to do with hiring an established GM with a proven track record than any myopic view of an isolated decision.

Sorry to burst your preconceived bubble.

  8. tomingeorgia February 1st, 2012 at 7:36 pm

rein in a little, gentlemen. Theres nothing substantive to slur each other about at the moment.

  9. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 7:37 pm

How proven was Gene Michael, Bob Watson, Theo Epstein or Brian Cashman or any other GM before being hired for their first GM stint? you’ve been whining about it being Eppler being the one that put Chamberlain in the pen for more than a year.

  10. Jerkface February 1st, 2012 at 7:38 pm

once he gets away from that standing at first until the batter is in a 0-2 or 1-2 hole.

He only attempted a steal 9 times in those counts.

28 attempts in the first 2 pitches. (first pitch 1-0, 0-1)

  11. Jerkface February 1st, 2012 at 7:38 pm

you’ve been whining about it being Eppler being the one that put Chamberlain in the pen for more than a year.

You’ve been whining about something that doesnt happen (gardner waiting too long to steal) for 2 years. Maybe time to pack that in?

  12. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 7:40 pm

somewhere along the line, management decided that Chamberlain would go to the pen, and just a guess that it’s health related.

  13. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 7:42 pm

I don’t know Rich why Eppler gets all the blame on Joba and if so why he’s not qualify to be the next Yankee GM. How much do any of us know about him to make that determination?

  14. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 7:43 pm

That’s the problem…he only attempted to steal 9 times. He’s not very good at reading moves.

  15. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 7:45 pm

Well, Gardner certainly isn’t Ricky or Lou Brock.

  16. Jerkface February 1st, 2012 at 7:46 pm

That’s the problem…he only attempted to steal 9 times. He’s not very good at reading moves.

So you want him to steal MORE on 1-2 and 0-2 counts? You probably just did not understand, so I will tell you again. He only attempted steals in those ‘bad counts’ 9 times. He stole first pitch 0-1 or 1-0 28 times. And in more aggressive counts the rest of the time (2-0, 2-1, 3-0, etc).

No one steals first pitch all the time. Not even the guy who had the most steals in the majors.

  17. Jerkface February 1st, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Well, Gardner certainly isn’t Ricky or Lou Brock.

He isn’t a hall of famer?!

  18. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 7:49 pm

Just making a joke here as guys like Coleman can apply to it too.

  19. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 7:55 pm

“How proven was Gene Michael, Bob Watson, Theo Epstein or Brian Cashman or any other GM before being hired for their first GM stint?”

Of those, only Stick started with nothing and built a powerhouse. I don’t think it was foreseeable that he would do that.

The Yankees have the luxury, should the need arise, to be able to spend whatever it takes to get the best GM (the best scouts, the best player developmental people) money can buy. It’s not like they don’t set money on fire for marginal players.

So why take a chance on an unproven commodity.

  20. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 7:56 pm

“I don’t know Rich why Eppler gets all the blame on Joba and if so why he’s not qualify to be the next Yankee GM. How much do any of us know about him to make that determination?”

Eppler has NOTHING to do with any of my posts on this thread.

  21. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 7:58 pm

“So why take a chance on an unproven commodity.”

Because they might think he’s the best man for the job which is why they do interviews.

  22. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 7:59 pm

i’m all for Tim Raines being brought into camp and teach the young players how to read pitchers, get reads and overall learn how to steal bases at a more successful rate. There was nobody better. That just doesn’t go for Gardner, Nunez and Cano, but, all of the youngsters in the system, but, especially the speed guys.

  23. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 8:00 pm

“Eppler has NOTHING to do with any of my posts on this thread.”

    So you’re not the anti-Eppler?

Anyhow, I don’t care if you are as I have no idea whether Eppler should be the next Yankee GM. I’m sure Hal would conduct a very detailed interview process to make that determination.

  24. PhiltheThrill February 1st, 2012 at 8:01 pm

    Rich,

    why do you bother?

  25. Against All Odds February 1st, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Yes his health as a starter was such a concern that they had him train as a starter and compete for a rotation spot he had no chance of winning.

Damon Oppenheimer also got a multi-year extension and added responsibilities from the Yanks this offseason.

  28. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 8:07 pm

    “So you’re not the anti-Eppler?”

I meant Jobber. I don’t have the highest opinion of Eppler, but it has nothing to do with what I have been posting on this thread. I think it’s time, whether Cashman stays or not, to look to hire people who have proven track records, like those in TB.

    Phil

    I’m a masochist?

  29. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 8:08 pm

“Eppler has NOTHING to do with any of my posts on this thread.”

As I just posted, I meant Jobber. Freudian? Maybe, but a slip nonetheless.

  30. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Yeah, it only took Tampa 11 years to get a proven track record with getting top 5 draft picks for years.

  31. Against All Odds February 1st, 2012 at 8:12 pm

If Cashman did leave it would be great if Friedman became the GM.

  32. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 8:13 pm

Exactly who is this “Jobber” that you’re referring to?

  33. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Andrew Friedman became GM in 2005, about the time when Cashman got more power. His record is outstanding.

  34. Rich in NJ February 1st, 2012 at 8:15 pm

    Jobber is Francessa-ese.

  35. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 8:17 pm

I was hoping at one time that Gardner could become a player like ex-Yankee Willie McGee , or even though I think has better skills than Otis Nixon, Otis was a pain in the arse when he stepped to the plate….Pitchers, catchers and defenses were already thinking about him being on base…..A very disruptive guy

  38. randy l. February 1st, 2012 at 8:32 pm

ah, there is an answer .

  43. GreenBeret7 February 1st, 2012 at 8:43 pm

Yep, it’s time for groundhog day. Same thing here, day after day, same people involved in arguments.

  45. randy l. February 1st, 2012 at 8:46 pm

“The Red Sox, once Theo got in there and they started going in the right direction — and obviously passed us, and won the championships — their decision-making was pure, objective analysis, with a lot of discipline about what’s best for the Sox rather than the emotional ties to an individual player.”

this kind of statement reaffirms what i have been saying about cashman for a long time. i hated what he did with bernie. i hated what he did with wang. i’m close to hating what he’s done with hughes and joba. i for sure hate what he’s done with montero.

the red sox have created a climate where there are no core red sox players. all of them know that management does not care about them as individuals. from the way garciapparra was treated it went right down the line. players knew they would be bad mouthed and run out of town.

i don’t think this over time creates a team. i think it creates a situation where there are a lot of players covering their asses. if cashman wants the yankees to get to the situation where the red sox are in now where they have imploded as a team, all he has to do is to think what’s better for the yankees than for individual players.

if a management takes care of it’s players, the favor and loyalty will be returned. if management doesn’t. it’s every man for himself.

that’s a dumb way to run a business and borderline immoral.it shows a complete lack of character and real leadership. it is just corporate ego run amuck where management thins they are the key to the organization and everyone else but them is replaceable.

I dug out an old scrapbook that my mom had kept for more than 45 years with ticket stubs and programs. in them were the games from Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland. Two in particular I remember well. One from a game in Detroit on September 20th, 1960. Mantle clocked a pitch off of righty Paul Foytack over the right center field stands for a 3 run homer and the other was going back to back with Maris with a blast off of Early Wynn in the first inning. It hit off of the exploding scoreboard in center about half way up on the right side. Old Early was stunned. Never showed much emotion until he was pissed, just stood on the mound shaking his head. Bill Stafford was cruising until he gave up a shot to the center field bullpen by relief pitcher Frankie Bauman. 6-2 win for NY and Arroyo pitched the last 3 innings.

I was so young when Mantle played that an older kid was able to convince me that Felix Mantilla was Mickey’s brother.

I do know there’s no BS in Special Forces, at least back when I knew something about it.

GB7′s supposed special forces background has nothing to do with how he acts on a baseball blog, and he has posted plenty of BS on here and has been called on it many times.

GB…..I’ve been to The old Tiger ( Briggs ) Stadium on 6 occasions……4 baseball games including the McLain groove pitch to Mantle and 2 Lion games…..I didn’t clearly understand what was going on beween Denny and Mantle at the time but the people around me knew….I was 16 at the time and all I cared was that The Mick went yard …..

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

    Pat,

Briggs Stadium was a great place to watch a game. Ernie Harwell hanging out over home plate and hearing his broadcasts over the speakers, watching Kaline and Colavito hitting homers in one inning and then hosing out base runners in the next, Freehan’s voice could be heard everywhere you sat, hated Frank Lary and Jim Bunning going back to back in a series, the odd batting stance of Dick McAuliffe, one of the ugliest pitchers ever besides Jim Coates Don Mossi, great hotdogs. Everything in the park was green. I liked that place better than Wrigley Field. Never got to the old, old YS until 1972 when i finished my first tour in VN. It caught my breath with the size and beauty. I got there after the remodeling, but, not to the new one, yet.

  86. Pat M. February 1st, 2012 at 9:44 pm

Tin Cup…..Mantle cards were rare to find in my pack of Topps……I did have both Rog & Mick’s 1961 cards though, in fact I had the entire 61 Yanks team and just about the 61 Reds team…….I did extra work around the house so I could buy a few more packs a week…..They used to be a nickle a pack and you got maybe 20-22 cards…And if you were lucky the gum wasn’t real hard …I still remember the white powder that was on the gum…..My .25 cents a week allowance was usually devoted all spring for baseball cards……Once school was out it was time to trade cards or flip for them……

No ballentine’s. but, did mistakenly get some Falstaff once. even the ‘Yards refused it. Cold or hot, that stuff was as bad as Stroh’s

I drank a lot of Strohs in school. We used to buy the 30 packs. Saved the cans so we could buy more.
Then one day I cracked open a semi warm one, took one sip and immediately tossed my cookies.

My body had said “no mas!”

  101. J. Alfred Prufrock February 1st, 2012 at 10:14 pm

    Rich,

I wouldn’t want Eppler replacing Cashman, either. We don’t need a lateral move. I posted as much yesterday.

As for the great mind who concluded Joba was finished as a reliever at age 23, Eppler was the ringleader, reportedly. Cashman basically did a lot of talking and then abided by Eppler (Eiland also bailed and changed his rhetoric).

    http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/

cashman-disagrees-with-eppler-but-defends-his-right-to-say-it-1.1835500Cashman disagrees with Eppler but defends his right to say it

TAMPA, Fla. – Yes, Brian Cashman said, he wants Billy Eppler to keep talking.
Eppler, the Yankees’ director of pro scouting and one of Cashman’s most trusted advisers, started a minor tempest – outside the organization – early Saturday evening during an interview on WFAN.
Asked about Joba Chamberlain starting at some point this year, Eppler said: “I don’t foresee a situation where he would be starting at all.”
Asked if Chamberlain will be competing for a rotation spot next year, he said: “I wouldn’t consider that likely, no.”
Cashman, speaking Sunday in the clubhouse, said no determination on Chamberlain’s future – either for this year or in 2011 – had been made.
The GM again said the Yankees see Chamberlain as a “starter that can relieve” and that “we haven’t had any team meetings and said, all right, he’s a reliever for the rest of his life.”
Cashman said Eppler’s comments were simply an example of the “healthy dialogue” that takes place internally and that unanimity doesn’t, and shouldn’t, exist.

Good find. Candor can be a virtue, but discretion, more so.

  104. Pat M. February 1st, 2012 at 10:18 pm

Face….Last week you had be hanging out at Santa Monica HS, now you have me skulking around elementary schools….Wow….Now remember , do not stick your tong on a frozen flagpole regardless what anyone tells you……While you are here, I did think of you during a scene in Money ball….It’s early on when Billy is having a round table with the old guard scouts and one of them rule out a player because of him not having a good looking girlfriend…..Funny yes, but there are still some real old timers who have that on their charts…..No malice intended but I did think you must have liked that scene….

  105. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 10:21 pm

That article proves nothing except an organization decision was made about Joba and Eppler was the first one to reveal it.

  106. stuckey February 1st, 2012 at 10:27 pm

    “stuckey-

“you don’t run into people with your kind of sarcasm much on athletic fields.”

Randy, that may well be true. Do you generally have trouble wrapping your head around the atypical? That a little too much running for the mouse in the your wheel?

Ironically, however, given that man reputedly eligible for AARP membership is seemingly still basking on the glow of his athletic accomplishments achieved during the Nixon administration and looking to use it in some unprovable quest to establish alpha dog status ala some high school knucklehead whose just self-aware enough to know making varsity squad is going to forever adorn the top of his lifetime resume, I suspect our experiences on the athletic fields of our youth are in fact probably strikingly similar.

I can say anything I like here, its vapor. You can call it a lie and I can’t do anything to prove otherwise.

But to play your game, I fully understand your (relative) impressive baseball accomplishments, but from me to you, if we were to face each other in our respective days, you’d probably get the best of me 4 times outta ten, but if I wanted to sit your ass in the dirt with something up and in, there wouldn’t have been a damn thing you could have done about it expect sit down.

Trust has nothing to do with it as he’s the one that’s going to make the decision whether you like it or not.

  109. J. Alfred Prufrock February 1st, 2012 at 10:29 pm

    Rich,

Hang in there, if you care to, that is. This place has its good and bad points :) .

  110. Crawdaddy February 1st, 2012 at 10:30 pm

“Damon Oppenheimer also got a multi-year extension and added responsibilities from the Yanks this offseason.”

You sure about that? BA reported only a one year contract and the same with Newman and Eppler.

  111. yankeefeminista February 1st, 2012 at 10:31 pm

I can’t believe that they may actually eliminate a travel day during the ALDS in order to get in wild card round games. Not liking that for us at all. I truly hope that they wait a year to add the wild card round.

“Sources say there have been extensive discussions about eliminating a travel day during the division series to create more room for the wild-card round. But in return, the union has told management it would want concessions on start times for games that would be played on back-to-back days in different time zones.”

That’s possible, but he certainly showed he was philosophically strongly in favor of it. I don’t really give a f***, because all who said “aye” made a baaaaad decision. Off with all of their heads, I say :D .

  117. comet February 1st, 2012 at 10:51 pm

My favourite Mantle HR was one he hit off of Hank Aguire? a Tiger relief pitcher. Mantel was sent up to pinch hit and couldn’t run. Anything other than a HR was supposedly an out. I didn’t see it, but listened to Yankee broadcast on a transistor radio.
