PHILLIES
Jimmy Rollins SS
Shane Victorino CF
Hunter Pence RF

LHP Cole Hamels (14-9, 2.79 last season)
Hamels vs. Yankees
TIME: 1:05 p.m.
WEATHER: A few clouds in the sky, but otherwise perfect spring training weather. And this is easily my favorite Grapefruit League park.
UMPIRES: HP Phil Cuzzi, 1B Tom Hallion, 2B Eric Cooper, 3B Paul Emmel
FAMILIAR FOE: Jonathan Papelbon is scheduled to pitch out of the bullpen for the Phillies. The rest of their available pitchers: RHP Dave Bush, LHP Dontrelle Willis, LHP Raul Valdes, RHP Chad Qualls and RHP Michael Stutes. You might remember Valdes from a few Yankees appearances last year.
PHACING THE PHILLIES: The Yankees open the Grapefruit League schedule with three straight games against the Phillies. Last season, the Yankees were 3-2 against Philadelphia in spring training. That included a 5-4 loss in last year’s spring opener in Tampa. The Yankees don’t face the Phillies in interleague this year.
WINNING ONE NUMBERS GAME: The Yankees have 69 players in camp. For comparison, the Phillies have 57.
UPDATE, 1:09 p.m.: Granderson doubles off Cole Hamels. Yes, Hamels is a lefty.
UPDATE, 1:12 p.m.: Nice ovation for Raul Ibanez, who blooped a double for a 1-0 Yankees lead.
UPDATE, 1:20 p.m.: Not an especially easy play with Victorino running, but that’s still an error on Nunez.
UPDATE, 1:22 p.m.: Two-run homer by Pence. Remember, Girardi said today’s game has no impact on his rotation decision.
UPDATE, 1:49 p.m.: Solo homer by Granderson. Might have gotten a little help from the wind, but still, pretty good start to his spring. David Phelps in to pitch the bottom of the third.
UPDATE, 2:09 p.m.: Phelps has thrown two scoreless, and now Papelbon is pitching for the Phillies. Quite a few boos mixed into the cheers when his name was announced.
UPDATE, 2:15 p.m.: Banuelos in the game for the Yankees. All of the backups are in except Nunez and Martin.
UPDATE, 2:33 p.m.: Jorge Vazquez has his first RBI of the spring, and didn’t need a homer to do it. His RBI single has the Yankees up, 3-2.

Charlie Manuel expecting a 100 win season. Good luck with that against an improved Marlins and Nats team as well as a solid Braves team.
And Grandy keeps on hitting lefties!!
“Right behind home plate \o/”
Hey Jerk are you the big red haired lady in the tank-top sitting behind home plate? If so I think I see you.
Ibanez smoked that RBI double.
Gardner GO to 2nd.
Granderson solid smash.liner, for a double-quick wrists
Swisher weak flyout to right.
Ibanez loops a double down LF line for double 1-0
Nice.
That’s me, please refer to me as big mama from now on! Lmao raul squibber.
Tar March 3rd, 2012 at 1:12 pm
LMAO!!
JF-
What row and are you wearing a blue NYY T-Shirt?
Raul already demonstrating my he’s clutch theory
Nova
For you MLB.TV veterans, is there a way to have the game always on top? ( I have a Mac )
3-2 strikeout of Rollins. There is no radar gun.
JF,
Do they have a gun in the park?, the MLB transmition is not showing any readings
Nunez picking up right where he started last season.
Was a tough play though.
Nunez misjudges short hop-error at SS
“Charlie Manuel expecting a 100 win season.”
nfw
NunEz already in midseason form.
Nova really wild
Nova serves up a meatball on 3-0 count to Pence 2-1
Seemed like that was wind blown, he didn’t hit it all that well
Pencd crushed that. Wind is blowing in from the direction he hit that. Not wind aided.
Windblown allright, but it was a meatball
Thanks JF
“Nova really wild”
Exaggerate much buddy ?
“he didn’t hit it all that well”
Belt high and straight 3-0 fastball– I thought he crushed it.
JF-What row are you in behind home plate?

LOL – second that -
Nice CU that Martin swings thru and strikes out.
Yankee baseball – YAY!!!
Nunez maybe a liability with the glove, but he certainly can hit, love the approach
I’m thinking we all realize that ST is time for players to get back into the swing of things, yes?
Remember that AJ Burnett had the best ST record last year – or at least that’s what someone posted.
Enjoy the fact that we have baseball back. Ignore pretty much everything else – especially on official day one of ST.
Hi luis!!!
Hamels CU in midseason form. Hall loops a single to right. Looks like the wind blew that one in.
Hi Trish!! Good to have Yankee baseball back!!
Are all of you watching the game?
I absolutely love having it back. I can’t take it too seriously of course, since it’s just practice time! But still it’s fun to be able to watch it.
I’m watching it.
YT,
When we faced him in 09, did he have that CU or he was a fast ball- CB pitcher?
“JF-What row are you in behind home plate?”
It might be dangerous to give away his real position. You never know who might be there.
cough GBandkiller cough.
Me too…
Future yankee dom brown?
Tar-
Just wanted to see if Jerkface is the typical nerdy stat guy! Just kidding JF.
Luis-
Hamels best pitch is the CU. One of the better ones.
Jerkface March 3rd, 2012 at 1:37 pm
Future yankee dom brown?
=========
His swing looks a bit long for my taste
Nice play by Hall throwing out Brown.
“Just wanted to see if Jerkface is the typical nerdy stat guy!”
Guy?
Really I picture her as the “big mama type”. I bet you that’s her in the big red tank top
Very good curveball for the K
Much better inning by Nova, pitching ahead in the count.
Novas breaking stuff and offspeed seem ahead of his fastball command right now. Good for nova to pickup his defense. His slider was breaking hard into the lhb box.
Trisha,
Right now, i’m just enjoying a baseball game!
Tar-
I see her. I see her. Tats all up and down the arms. Did I spell tats right?
Now we’ll see Phelps, then Banuelos followed by Betances.
“Very good curveball for the K”
Yeah. I think the Change on the pitch before was pretty good too.
Nunez opposite field lineshot was impressive. Hit it too hard, was 2 strikes too if I recall.
“Did I spell tats right?”
Yep.
I think the stogie hanging out of the mouth is a nice touch by “big mama”.
granderson is ridiculous. He should quit now, save it for the regular season.
Yeah. I think the Change on the pitch before was pretty good too.
Yup.
Grandy going oppo!! wind blown??
Granderson is ready.
Why is Ibanez playing against a lefty when there’s a righty going tomorrow? Damn you Joe!!!!
Also…good start at short for Nunez. Glad to see that glove has improved over the winter.
Curtis Granderson hits belt high pitch out in left. Impressive. Gardner struck out on same pitch, looking.
Yankee Trader March 3rd, 2012 at 1:27 pm
JF-What row are you in behind home plate?
————————————————————————————————————————-
He’s in the front row, just to the right of the Yankee dugout. He’s there in case Girardi needs help managing. In the seat next to him is Cashman…in case he needs help with his general managing.
Ibanez shows off the power.
Grandy! Batting 1.000 with a 3.000 Slugging.
Tar-
LMAO. Where is this WALDO guy/gal?
BTW Tar-
Are you going to the UNC Duke game?
Like the movement on the pitches of this Phelps kid
Curtis Granderson hits belt high pitch out in left. Impressive. Gardner struck out on same pitch, looking.
============================================
Like Pence’s, it was wind blown in a big way, but he’s swinging a nice bat early on.
Tom-
Did you have to spend part of the evening last night in the basement? Rough storm just north of the beltway in Atlanta.
“Trisha,
Right now, i’m just enjoying a baseball game!”
Anyone remember the consternation on the forum during Grandy’s first year when he went cold at the plate and the lohud “faithful” were ready to trade him???
LMAO!!!!
I remember that Tar, Fran, and I all felt good about what he offered in the field and refused to jump on the the “kill Granderson” bandwagon – and it was quite a large one!
Hope Grandy doesn’t waste all his hits in these meaningless ST games
WOW!!, That’s a nasty curve
Doubt it YT. It’s at Cameron Indoor.
“Are you going to the UNC Duke game?”
Unfortunately no.
It’s a bit crazy around here, probably safe to just stay home tonight.
Al Leitar – gotta see how he handles New York.
Horrors, Al. Didn’t you know that there’s no such thing as Bronx pressure!

trisha – true pinstriped blue March 3rd, 2012 at 1:51 pm
I must say that i wanted to see Jackson play for the Yankees, but boy!! what a great trade this one was
Let the Phelps love begin!
Poor AJ and poor Pirates – 8-12 weeks. Yikes.
The game is on MLB Network, in case anyone was wondering.
By the way, they are raving about Pineda and said they know Montero is supposed to be a good prospoect but they had no idea how Seattle could give up Pineda after how impressive he was last year when they saw him
You guys will enjoy watching Phelps pitch. Others have better stuff, but, nobody gets as much out of the stuff he has as Phelps.
I’m sitting next to the annoying philly fans. Pences hr was not wind blown, he hit it out right center. Wind is in from right.
YT,
Those were some pretty fierce storms, but no tornados around here. The leak in the back shed roof got a little bigger, though.
luis – people get so wrapped up in their jonesing for offense, they totally tend to forget the defense that someone brings. Heck I’d be content just having Grandy’s glove out there, though of course his offense is a huge bonus, ha ha.
This Phelps kid has great stuff….Good FB with movement, nasty curball and a two seamer if i’m not mistaken
I’m so happy we got Chavez back.
Nice command there by Phelps.
Phelps last pitch looked like a change, he should be the first guy in line for a spot start.
“but they had no idea how Seattle could give up Pineda after how impressive he was last year when they saw him”
Well there you have it. It must be so…. I heard it on TV.
J/K
JSalisburyCSN: Hamels said Yankee fans were nice to him in bullpen. Wonder why.
——————
He must not have gotten the notice that Hal “Wilpon” Steinbrenner is on a budget so there is no chance of adding a 28 yr old lefty ace/WS MVP, so there is no need to be “nice” to him. might as well taunt him.
Hi Tom!
Good to see you around, is great to have live baseball back
Close play on Nunez. Was he safe? No replay.
Last Sunday at a family birthday party, our my 5 year old’s piece of cake, she asked for a second. I said yes.
After the 2nd, she asked for a third. I said no, she replied “Daddy, you never let me have anything”.
Just thought I’d share.
Starters still in, pretty nice for first spring game. I expected two or three innings then the parade of milbers.

Crawford suffers a setback to wrist on bunting drill. AJ fractures his orbit bunting. Maybe Tex should stop practicing it.

Hopefully the kids step up.
Phelps had a 10.50 Era in 6ip during spring training last season.
…But so far is making a good first impression with these 2 innings today.
Hopefully all the adjustments he’s made since coming back from a unfortunate injury plagued season in 2011 can lead to a productive 2012.
Oh … I love his arm action it looks faster compared to the last time we all saw him last march.
We got lucky there, it looked like a hanging offspeed pitch
Hey, luis!
Wife insists on watching the Villanova BB game, so I’m in the corner with my new fast PC getting drowned out by her shrieks of anguish.
“They’re only young once. A third piece of cake isn’t much to ask!”
And there was LOTS of cake left and we live next store to a bakery.
Her grandfather George would have let her have more cake, god rest his soul.
This is one of the great things of live baseball, i get to forget about that trade and look in to some good prospects that might play for the team”
Luis
Yeah, it was a big trade for both teams. There will be Montero talk for a long time ( and that’s ok ). But not nearly as much now that we live Ball and lots of our own great prospects.
Papelblown!!!!
Sad to see Papelbum in the NL. Will definitely miss his meatballs.
Papelbon in for the 5th to keep the game close. Phillies going all out.
Charge the mound!!!
Lusty boos eminate from the pro yankee portion of the crowd as papelbon puckers in.
Tar, I’m really looking forward to Pineda talk. I’m excited beyond belief to have gotten him. My perspicacity meter tells me we are going to be kissing the ground that we got him, for many years to come.
Pap looked into the the Phillies clubhouse and saw a bunch of grinders**?
Wasn’t that the problem with the Boston clubhouse?
(Google “Philadelphia, grinder’ for the punchline)
Thome lookin’ like Amos McCoy instead of The Real McCoy. Age makes this guy a DH\PH’er period.
Chavez at 1B brings back memories of Giambi defensively. Rollin’ the dice there.
Phelps lookin’ like he is gonna make Girardi think twice about sending him down.
Papelbon better put on some sun block. The guy musta been inna cave the entire offseason.
Unless he improves his D, it’s NIX-ON-NIX
Gardner leading off, needs to take pitches. Batting in any other situation, he needs to be aggressive.
JF
Is that Hooters girls as ball girls?
Banuelos time.
” My perspicacity meter”
I’ve heard of many types of meters, but this one has to be the best one !! Where can i get one??
Trish
Hopefully Pineda talk will drown out Montero talk. Also I’ve learned to trust your “perspicacity meter”.
He may be a Philly now, but i’ll hate him no matter what uniform he wears
Show us the game. No interview with the bush
Manny B!
wish they could acquire the guy batting.
wish the guy talking would SHUT UP
Manny vs Brown looked like Natalie Portman vs. Dwight Howard
Brown’s swing looks better.
There may be hooters girls somewhere, but I have laser locked focus on manny b.
Banuelos is going to be really good.

Mannys big thing this year is fastball command. Even though he was in a hitters count his stuff was too good.

Brown’s swing looks better.
————————————————————————————————————————-
Better than what? He couldn’t beat Ibanez out last year and hasn’t stuck after two years and may not again.
Certainly effective, but Banny failed to throw anything inside to righties.
In all seriousness, looks like Banuelos has a (very) slight hitch when he picks up and turns his plant foot on the rubber.
He picks his foot up, puts it down and then sort of readjusts it again.
D-Train lookin’ as old as Casey Jones.
Banuelos has added about 30 pounds over the last two years and up to 195 pounds. That should help with his stamina.
“Better than what? He couldn’t beat Ibanez out last year and hasn’t stuck after two years and may not again.”
better than last year when he was terrible…..he’s what 23 years old. His swing was too long….still probably is a little but looks better
Hope D-Train gets it back. He was really fun to watch.
Cole garner, who?, just smoked that hanger.
Dontrelle just sat that hanger on a tee.
Is D-train vying for rotation spot or a loogy ?
Nice hti by new AAA acquision Garner-competing with Maxwell, Curtis, Dickerson-anyone else?
Sarge puts Ibanez up there with Darvish as key additions?
*acquisition*
Garner picked up from Rockies
Dom brown hurt his wrist last year so he couldn’t beat out anyone in spring as he got hurt in the first few games. He managed to ops 700 in the majors recovdring from wrist surgery, the yankees would be lucky to have him he has talent.
I would think rotation, Luis. Not sure of their rotation though so really don’t know if there are any openings.
Is it me, or does Vasquez remind anyone of you-know-who?
stuckey – in more ways than one…
Chato goes the other way nice. Disappointed I had to see him so closely though.
“Is it me, or does Vasquez remind anyone of you-know-who?”
kinda looks like him a little….that piece of hitting looked like him as well.
That’s a nice piece of hitting from Vasquez…
Trisha,
I don’t know either
Put Sanchez in!
Nice hit by you know who!
Boo Martin! Bring on Gary Sanchez!!
“Chato goes the other way nice.”
Spoiler. Quit predicting future events.
blake, they didn’t announce him it didn’t immediately dawn on me who he was, and I see his stance and first few swings, then his face, and I’m like, ‘what, did we acquire his older brother?’

You can’t seriously think I’m actually ragging on Martin.
Yankees signed OF Cole Garner to a minor league deal. Garner became a free agent after being non-tendered by the Rockies in December. The 27-year-old had a brief stint with the big-league club last July, but spent the majority of the 2011 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, batting .330/.366/.557 with eight home runs, 35 RBI and a .923 OPS over 203 plate appearances. He’ll provide some outfield depth with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.[Yankees Fans Unite]
Pat M.
Will Martin be public enemy no. 1 this year?
“Fans” always need a focus of their ire.
As a Knick fans I’ve watched it go from Jefferies to Douglas to Stoudemire.
Is Martin the 2012 piss cup?
Anyone know g sanchez number this camp? Think he just warmed up manny b.
Why don’t they do that stupid stuff in between innings?, i want to see ManBan!!
So MLB.TV (Online) is like a minute behind the Television version.
“You can’t seriously think I’m actually ragging on Martin.”
NTTAWWT
Look at Banuelos left foot.
It isn’t ‘quiet’.
Brown is 24 and a real hack in the outfield. Philadelphia would want a lot for him and he’s not worth the asking price.
Vazquez reminds me of Pujols. Not the guy that attempts to catch balls with his mask.
Stuckey is this some kind of randy impersonation?
can they please stop doing dumb interviews
Heads up manny b.
Will Martin be public enemy no. 1 this year?
———
I’m going with Cole Garner
Banny threw a BB over to 1B on that Sac Bunt.
Tyson Gillies-traded from the mariners for Cliff Lee?
What’s the point in leaving Martin for so long in to the game?
Jerkface,
No, I’m serious.
I’m not suggesting it’s ANYTHING of import. Not a warning. Just noticed it.
It’s sort of like Mo’s tap-tap, but that’s from the set and before his upper body moves.
Dom brown is 24 this year but opsd 950 in aaa as a 22 year old and plays fine defense in right. Don’t let your bias for certain posters cloud your view of a fine prospect. Was a top 15 guy in milb before 2011
“I’m going with Cole Garner”
I’m going with LeBron James
Sarge does nothing for me. His hats even less.
“Two-run homer by Pence. Remember, Girardi said today’s game has no impact on his rotation decision.”
This quote made me laugh Chad. It’s laughable to think that Girardi doesn’t already know his rotation. Girardi has to be high if he thinks anyone is buying that crap about Pineda and Nova not being locks to be in his rotation.
Stuckey, unless its a tip for a certain pitch I don’t think it matters. He stands square so he has to turn before each pitch when not in stretch.
Holy crap manny b sawed bat in half pointy end went into the crowd.
That girl now has a weapon.
ManBan, has to work on being more economical

Good move by leaving Manny out there to clean up his own mess.
Uh oh. The book is out on Banuelos. If he loads the bases his first time out in ST, whatever is he going to do when he makes it to the majors? Fans, start to panic.
Never mind, his career has been saved, praise be to God!
Winds swirling.
Betances is warming up.
Manny will take off when he starts challenging guys…..it’s really early so I wouldn’t take anything away from today….but that’s what he needs to do….trust his stuff and get ahead of guys
Now we know why they got Pineda…
/anti-Stuckey’d
Manny B needs to slow down a little plus he overthrows his fastball…..Definitely a rhythm pitcher
Is the online version of MLB.TV online always this far behind the TV version?
Tar you need to get off nextdef, then its the same.
37 errors in less than 500 games in the minors and another 5 errors in less than 70 games in the majors suggest that Brown is not a fine outfielder. Unlike you, I don’t care who the poster is. It’s what’s said, not who says it.
I think it’s about 15- 30 seconds behind live tv.

Agree on Banny. Gotta throw with confidence, which he did Not do today. In general, his mannerisms reminded me of Pettitte. Hopefully, career follows the same path.

Errors for a kid learning how to play don’t mean a whole lot….he’s very talented just hasn’t put it all together yet…..
Errors ain’t a thing in the of, look at his range and arm. And you poopoo a guy for being 24 when he was gonna make the majors at 23 if he didn’t hurt his wrist. Got to aaa at 22 top rated prospect with power and patience. Laird is 24 and trying to put together a solid aaa campaign.

Wouldn’t that be awesome if the Yanks got some bench player and he turned out to hit 50 homers a year….
Betances in.
Hunter Pence has the ugliest swing I’ve ever seen for a good player.
I wouldn’t mind Chris Dickerson as lefty dh. If ibanez doesn’t pan out, I’d give him a shot.
Sanchez catching
Now we get to see the 3rd lineman along with CC and Pineda of the NY Yankee/Giants.
“Wouldn’t that be awesome if the Yanks got some bench player and he turned out to hit 50 homers a year….”
Both on the field and in the accounting ledger.

Yea it would but I’m pretty sure there is some rule in the baseball universe that makes it a once in a lifetime/generation thing.
I haven’t seen Dellin pitch a lot….but every time I have he’s been all over the place and consistently up in the zone.
“It was stated that he was a fine outfielder. He ain’t.”
Because he made some minor league errors? I haven’t seen him play out there enough to judge.
Betances needs work on mechanics. Didn’t he walk 6 last year in a call-up?
@LookoutLanding: Hector Noesi is throwing 94-97
Really poor attempt by Sanchez. Has been an issue with him over the last 2 years.
honestly, I am more impressed with what I seen from Phelps than the 2Bs whom prolly has higher ceiling. The Bs look raw and need more seasoning. that said, we 3/4 way thru a st game.
“Really poor attempt by Sanchez. Has been an issue with him over the last 2 years.”
Pretty poor pitch as well.
Lucky break
Phillies with both Podsednik and Juan Pierre. Pete and Re-Pete. One of these guys aint breakin’ camp.
“honestly, I am more impressed with what I seen from Phelps than the 2Bs whom prolly has higher ceiling. ”
Phelps can pitch…..he’s pitched at every level
Betances is like the Greg ‘the hammer Valentine of Yankees prospects. Meaning that , once he starts getting in a groove after being a bit unorthodox at first… he’s good to go.
“@LookoutLanding: Hector Noesi is throwing 94-97″

blake March 3rd, 2012 at 3:11 pm
“It was stated that he was a fine outfielder. He ain’t.”
Because he made some minor league errors? I haven’t seen him play out there enough to judge.
————————————————————————————————————————-
Even if you believe that errors don’t tell the whole story, 42 errors in less than 550 pro games says enough. NYYs won’t pay the cost to get him. Not right now.
Batances as well as Banny B. are overthrowing and he opens up too soon…..Slow down guys
If the Yankees don’t find a second bullpen lefty to their liking, maybe Phelps will come north with the team
“@LookoutLanding: Hector Noesi is throwing 94-97″
His velocity spiked a tick during Winterball from what I can recall.
Sanchez on deck.
“Even if you believe that errors don’t tell the whole story, 42 errors in less than 550 pro games says enough. NYYs won’t pay the cost to get him. Not right now.”
probably not….all I said was that I thought his swing looked better than last year.
Phils have put together a pretty nice team. If some of their acquisitions live up to their good years, Phils are going to be fine. Pierre, Thome, Posednick, D-Train, Wiggington.
One thing that Girardi has no patience for is pitchers who do not consistently throw strikes. Dellin appeared to be overthrowing the ball.
GB can’t be happy watching Valdes pitch for the Phillies after crying the Yankees let him go.
I’m really rooting for betances, but this guy has a lot of work ahead. At first, it looked like he was yanking his pitches, then releasing too soon. He seemed to alter his delivery from pitch to pitch.
I know he’s very young, and very tall. But, unless he’s trying to be a young version of aj, he’s got sooner work to do. I’m sure uncertainty about him, and banuelos, helped prompt the trade for Pineda.
Go Sanchez!!
Trisha, all those guys are on the wrong side of the hill.
If pena reaches the great garner comes up.
banuelos still lacks command
The great garner stranded on deck
Does anyone think the Yankees would be willing to shift Betances to the bullpen and try and turn him into a closer?
That’s one ugly k for Pena
I’m rooting for Betances-Brooklynite!
Bret there’s no upside to that move until he has spent a bunch more years as a starter. Command issues don’t go away in the pen. Wild closers can be effective but not many are consistent.
Bret The Hitman March 3rd, 2012 at 3:24 pm

—————————
If it doesn’t work out for him as a starter sure.
Bret,
They have to exhaust all possible ways for him to become a starter before shifting him to the BP
Betances out after just 1 inning. Cabral in.
Trisha-
The Phillies have to have concerns about their offense. Howard now out longer than expected.Utley can’t play ever day. Polanco coming off a bad year.
If Betances can’t throw strikes as a starter, what makes you think he could throw those as a RP? lol
Pena need to sacrifice his gloves to Jubu and transfer it to Nunez then we may finally have one average possibly above average SS to back up Jete.
there is really no reason to shift Betances to the pen now….they don’t have a need at the big league level and he still could figure it out.
Lost my internet feed. More play by play, please!
Bret-
I remember a recent article about potential future closers for the Yankees when Mo retires-Betances was on the list.
Almost made an incredible play
Tyson Gillies infield hit off glove of Cabral.
Cabral Tom
It sounds like they need to break down Betances, simplify his arsenal and stick with pitches he can most often throw for strikes.
Talking about the pen for Betances now is absurd. Let him pitch.

Afternoon, Joe.
Hope all is going well up there. Getting the spring rains here. Those Indiana tornadoes are brutal, huh? My mom still has family in that area and those two towns really got hammered. I heard that Huntsville got hit hard too.
Both Banuelos and Betances are better off when they back off on the fastball a bit. I’m hoping that they can get some help from Rothschild and Aldred. Betances could talk with both Sabathia and Pineda about how tall, wide bodied pitchers deal with that kind of size.
I’d give Banuelos about a B- for today, he really didn’t get any defensive swings even though they didn’t score on him.
Betances was no better than D, he is all over the place with his delivery even though he obviously throws hard. Until he learns to repeat his delivery from pitch to pitch let alone from game to game he isn’t going to be on the big club.
“Trisha, all those guys are on the wrong side of the hill.”
Joe, people said that about Freddy and Bartolo Colon, too. And also Andruw Jones!
You never know what a change of scenery might do. I’m hoping they all do a great job because they’ve all been really good players in the past.
Cabral gets Hernandez to fly out to Garner, who makes good throw to 1st, but too late to double up Gillies
JF beat me to it. Can’t walk so many out of the bullpen.
I’m all for being patient, and it seems like the Pineda move takes all the pressure off for the 2 B’s to get it together right NOW.
Looped single in front of Wise in center. 1st and 2nd 2 out Tom.

LMAO. Someone wants him to be converted to a reliever off today? He, and Banuelos, didn’t even play WB. They haven’t pitched in months and the adrenaline’s going.
I haven’t seen it yet, going to MLB archives in a while.
Has Sanchez had an AB?
I hope Betances doesn’t end up the next Brackman.
The only way breaking down betances would help is if they chopped 3 feet off him. He struggles to throw fastball strikes, because he is huge. Not like he zips them in there 65% of the time but misses with everything else.
Easy flyout to Wise. still 6-2 thru 8
Hi JAP!,
Yes he did ,a slow roller to third
I thought Banuelos did ok for his first spring outing….he still is nibbling too much. He needs to attack….
His misses are different than Betances….Betances really doesn’t know where it’s going half the time….I still think Manny just tries to be too perfect a lot of the time instead of just going after guys.
Don’t know about Betances and Banuelos but the Yankees certainly do. That’s why I think it’s crazy to talk about them as being ready to come up as reason to not have gotten Pineda. Pineda is both now and the future. Heck Banuelos is only 20! Like good wine, let them ripen in time.
The only place for a w(h)ine before its time is on the lohud forum!
Thanks, YT.
Sanchez ab was ugly, ground out on ~3 pitches. He took some vicious practice hacks before stepping in. Can see where the power comes from
hi gb.
the storms sound dreadful. hope your family is ok. some rain here, but sunny now.
good point about cc and pineda. at this point, both kids just need to pitch, and spend the year at aaa. they’re both still so very young.
Tom-
Get your internet feed back up?
Aw I was all excited for garner but its cojo. Mixed up their numbers
“I hope Betances doesn’t end up the next Brackman.”
Randy Johnson was in his late 20s when he found himself. Patience is a good thing.
Michael Stutes pitching. solid for Phillies last year
lefty Joseph up-easy popup to 3rd.
Laird hard hit grounder to SS 2 outs
YT,
Not yet. Dont know what’s the matter.
Patience didn’t work out with Brackman though.
Thanks, luis.
Not sure why Dellin didn’t get a second inning. As you can see, he’s not short relief material
.
They should have pitched him in the ninth as well. Probably would have settled down some, although not surprised he’s off this time of year.
Joe from LI, Rich,
Both spot on

Betances hasn’t lost velo. Citing one example, high or low, is worthless.
Dickerson up. wails away at a CU. but works a walk
Isn’t Brackman two yrs older than Betances?
Wise with looping hit, 2nd hit, 1st and 3rd
Zoile Almonte up
YT,
Obviously, the internet is working, just not the MLBTV feed. Probably the MLBTV server I’m getting it from.
Almonte has a good swing…
The difference between brack and betances is that betances is effectively wild. When brack was wild he just stunk. Gio gonzalez walked hella batters turned out ok. As long as he has great stuff and suppresses hrs and hits he will be fine. Brackman was walking guys out of the zone and getting hit in the zone. Different story. And brackman went to the pen and still sucked.
Smokes a double to RC both runs score
Almonte has a nice-looking swing.
Almonte smoked that liner, nice. Sounded awesome.

Thanks, joe. They’re all good in Indiana. They about 40 miles west of Maryville. It could have been even higher death toll if it had hit Evansville (about 40 miles southeast) or into Kentucky in Louisville or Covington, but, Henryville has hit hard and there’s nothing left of Maryville. Shockingly, school was in session and rrally tore the schools up and only a few minor injuries. I’m afraid this is going to be a bad weather season and it’s not even the season for tornadoes, yet.

He’s pitched an inning in ST. To speak of patience.
///
Zoilo could be in play next ST for an OF spot.
Brackman had other issues. His main sport was basketball, so he really was a project. Huge kid with body parts flying all over. TJS. Major league contract also shortened his development time with the Yankees.
For Trish:
Celebrate Boston’s humiliation with a T-Shirt
Sanchez just threw it into the of. Brackmans mlb deal meant they only had 4 years of development time.
You can look at young pitchers and fall in love with their potential but they still have to prove they have the tools to pitch in the bigs.
Betances was lucky to not get scored on in his one inning because the DP was smoked but right at Nunez, if it’s a foot either way it could have been a crooked inning.
He has obvious potential, he’ll go back to AAA and if he blossoms he’ll be a Yankee, that’s all any of us can say right now.
Brackman only had about 200 innings of pitching in college and couldn’t stay in the game long enough to chalk up the innings in the minors. Regardless of his age and stuff, he’s pretty inexperienced.
YT,
One of them was sent down to open a spot in the roster, i think it was Maxwell

) Agreed… They should have let him pitch the ninth… Big frame and tall pitchers take a little longer to get in a groove
///
Even in the season, he can have the first inning from hell, and then he’s a different pitcher. With the height, the time off, and the desire to force the issue to impress, that’s a collision course for a one inning cameo for a guy like Betances. Nothing to worry about, there.
Mike O’Conner in pitching for Yankees-lefty facing Willie Mcgee, oops no that’s Juan Pierre.
JAP,
I was very impressed with Phelps, that guy can pitch for real

Homerun now 8-4. The game is on the MLB TV station in highdef. Tom-Do you get it?

JF,
The Daily Dime guys at espn.com were chatting live from MIT. There there for a conference on sports analytics.
There are some articles on espn.com. TrueHoop has one titled “Dorkapalooza”.

YT,
Nope. Dish network doesn’t carry MLB TV. I have to use Dish because I have 9 TVs hooked up, and Direct TV didn’t have a clue how to to do that for less the gross national product of Germany.

Great night, y’all.

I’d love to get excited about these young players in ST, but I know 90% of them will be playing on other teams in the near future anyway – Maybe a guy like Man-Bam might be saved by the nasally GM.
Goodnight Trish
Agree with your stars trader. Also liked nunez almonte and vazquez at the plate. Novas slider and manny banuelos overall stuff get honorable mention. Phelps looked great I’m telling everyone he could start in the majors right now. He throws hard doesn’t walk people and has acceptable secondary offerings. Him and warren are good pitchers. Unheralded but could be a lot like hellickson shields fister etc. Not necessarily guys that are pegged for number 1 upside off the jump

You could do what I do: root for them in other uniforms. I spend a lot of time and some $$ seeing these kids develop. Just because they get dealt away doesn’t make me stop following them. I’ve already invested the time and at that point, you’re interested to see what they become.
Face…..Phelps was eye opening for me today……..I do think Betances will play more games at The Stadium in visiting grey
luis, if you’re still out there, or blake, what was Nunez’ error like?
i didnt see the game, but i can tell you that i’ve seen betances get in the groove in a trenton game, and he was impressive. he wasn’t sharp his first inning, then pretty untouchable the next 4 and they took him out. he hasn’t done that yet for the bombers, i hope he gets a chance to show it before he gets sent out to minor league camp.
i think he’s been a little over-excited pitching for they yankees thus far, but he’s better than he showed in september and today.
Phelps is IPK like to me….he doesn’t have the plus CU but he’s a pitchabilty guy that pounds the zone……if you look at his numbers he’s had success all the way up through the minors at every level.
I also agree that Nunez looked very good today….very comforable out there.
JAP,
I didn’t see it…he made the plays I saw.
Liked what I saw of Almonte. Nice quiet setup, simple swing with power. Reminded me a bit of Cano. He had a very good year in Tampa then stumbled a bit in Trenton. 12 HR/300 ab in Florida is a very good power rating.
JAP,
Tough hop roller…..but he hesitated a bit at the start of the play so that could have led to the tough hop
“……..I do think Betances will play more games at The Stadium in visiting grey”

You’re really talking about trading a kid off of a ST appearance?
They aren’t getting arms like Betrances very easily any more given the new CBA.
It’s really premature to talk about trading him like that isn’t so.

Thanks, luis. His issue in Trenton usually was overcharging, and alternatively, not planting his feet before throwing, resulting in wildness. He also had clean games, don’t want to make it sound like he didn’t.
Got to go to do some errands, later folks
Every time I’ve seen Dellin pitch he’s struggled with flying open and getting over his front side…..its because he’s so tall…..but it causes him to stay ip in the zone…..its one ST inning….I hope he gets a lot more this spring.
Nunez’s issues both fielding and throwing arr almost entirely footwork…..he has a tough time getting the timing of the dance steps down
JAP,
But his batting approach is incredible, love the guy he is going to be very good
Phelps and Warren looked solid – they’re going to be nice trade chips for us.
You know when you talk about trading Betances? When he’s pitching lights out, while Pineda, Hughes, and Nova are blowing hitters away, and a team knocks your socks off by offering a top ML young player who is just about to get a little more expensive.
Barring that, treat him like a growth stock in its early stages, and forget about him while he develops. The Yankees can afford to do that.
blake, you’ve seen him mostly in ST games, though. There’s a reason he’s a top 100 prospect, and it’s not because he’s tall. You can’t get to the good stuff because he’s so mechanically off in these games. When he’s on, his stuff and arsenal come into play, and then he shows you why you don’t give up on him. I think you’d have a good deal more optimism if you could see a few starts.
Can anyone tell me what kind of arm Zoilo has?
Neat thing about ST is that you now have an image along with the numbers. Mind you, you could live in Trenton and have both.
JAP
Yea….certainly possible and Im not saying that’s always who he is…..its just what I’ve seen in the 5-6 times I’ve seen him.

He really just needs to play more to work out those kinks, which is where the timing would come in. He’s always had that footwork issue, but playing often kept it more in check.
JAP,
Yea its timing….I liked how he looked today.
betances has a complicated delivery, it takes work to get it flowing. from sitting behind home plate i can tell you that he’s got a little hesitation that throws hitters off when they are trying to deal with a hard 96. plus he hides the ball really well so you can’t see it then it’s there. i saw him killing new brittain, a good hitting team, and he had their timing all off. true to form i believe he walked 2 in the first inning, then allowed only one hit. he was inducing bad swings and guys were looking funny at their bats on the way back to the dugout.
i hope we get to see somadat before he goes back down…

Nunez? If so, his approach has improved. I agree he’s going to be a good one. But where does he play? He’s got a fast bat and hits nice LDs. He probably has more power on the way, too. Just checking on Almonte on Fangraphs, he seems to have been injured because he didn’t play much until last year.
Rich in NJ…..I’m not basing my comment about trading Betances on today’s performance at all….In fact I mentioned him being traded dating back to last season….I can see him in a package for a position player that’s all…..Not advocating a trade but just saying he could be traded
Zoilo Almonte hasn’t been hurt that much. He’s just progressed slowly. His first 4 pro seasons were short season leagues. With Charleston and Tampa, they always had 5 outfielders that they were trying to squeeze in. Abraham Almonte has been hurt though. Zoilo Almonte has a pretty decent arm, though not exactly a cannon. He’s been around for 7 years as of this season, but, still won’t be 23 until June.
