Jeter, Martin and Swisher scratched
Derek Jeter was pulled from todays lineup because of a tender left calf. Joe Girardi said hes decided Jeter wont play again until Tuesday, but he labeled this as more precautionary than anything. He hasnt forgotten what happened to Jeters other calf last year.
Also, Russell Martin was scratched because of soreness in his left groin. Its unclear whether it happened on yesterdays play at first base.
Nick Swisher has told Girardi that his tight groin feels better, but Girardi decided not to play him today either.
UPDATE, 10:14 a.m.: Here’s the basic injury update…
Derek Jeter
Went through normal drills in Tampa yesterday, but while the Yankees were on the bus home from Viera, Girardi got a call saying Jeter’s left calf was “tender.” That’s not the same calf that Jeter hurt last year, but Girardi considered last season’s injury to be a cautionary tale.
“My alarm was he hurt his calf last year,” Girardi said. “I said, even though it’s the other calf, I said we’re going to be smart about this. I told him, ‘Don’t even go out today.’ I think he could hit today and take BP, but just let it calm down.”
Russell Martin
Girardi planned to have Martin catch seven or eight innings today, but instead Martin showed up and said his left groin was “stiff.” Girardi’s not sure whether it’s connected to yesterday’s awkward play at first base. For whatever it’s worth, Martin said yesterday that he was fine on that play, banged his shoulder into the ground but nothing else.
“He will not catch today and I’m not sure when he’ll play again,” Girardi said. “… I don’t think Russell will be out but a couple of days, but you never know. You don’t know how guys respond.”
Nick Swisher
Pulled from Wednesday’s game because of a sore groin, Swisher went through drills yesterday and told Girardi that he’s feeling better, but Girardi is being extra cautious — hard to blame him given the current state of nagging injuries — and so he won’t play this afternoon. Girardi said it’s possible Swisher will play tomorrow.
Freddy Garcia
Was scheduled to pitch on Monday’s off day, but Girardi said he doesn’t expect that to happen. However, there seems to be a chance that Monday will be the only start Garcia actually skips. Too early to know for sure, but Girardi didn’t seem to be ruling out any other start.
“His hand looks better,” Girardi said. “(But) he still has some swelling in there.”
Eduardo Nunez
As scheduled, Nunez will not hit again today. It will be his third day off in a row. He’s scheduled to try to hit again tomorrow. He still hasn’t played since being hit by a pitch in the right hand last Monday.
Ramiro Pena
Out with a sprained right ankle suffered in yesterday’s game. Although Pena said yesterday that he thinks he’ll be out only a day or two, Girardi still thinks it might be longer. Girardi mentioned Tuesday as a possible return for Pena.
“I imagine he’s going to be a couple of days,” Girardi said. “The way I saw him walk off the field yesterday, I wasn’t extremely encouraged.”
Russell Branyan
Has yet to play in a spring training game and had multiple epidurals this morning to try to help his sore back.
Austin Romine
Still not doing anything baseball related because of his sore back.
“He’s doing better,” Girardi said. “He’s probably pretty close to getting on the field to do some baseball activities. He feels much better, he feels much stronger, and that was the feeling we wanted him to have.”
Dave Robertson
Said this morning that he’s going to play catch today, but he’s still not sure when he’ll be on a mound. Robertson said he’s “doing well” but Girardi had too many other players on his mind today and forgot to check on his setup man.
“I forgot to ask about him,” Girardi said. “I had so many other guys to talk about.”

Looks like the Yankees are alternating their sore groins.
That’s smart.
Maine, that’s terrible. I really feel for you. When I was trying to nurse the pulled muscle in my shoulder back to health, I still tried working out and in an attempt to isolate the shoulder strained my intercostals – and reaggrevated the shoulder anyway. The pain was such that I ended up in the ER to get some heavy meds. I’m just about out of the woods. I cannot imagine what cracked ribs have to feel like. Can they give you anything for it? Maybe vicodin would work?
Bad week injury wise. At least Swisher feels better.

Your belief that Pineda can’t learn a CU at the ML level leads me to think you don’t think he’s smart enough.
Does that sound about right?
If so you’re “skating on thin ice.”
:
Randy, your comments about being smart are far too general. Define smart? There are plenty and mostly “not smart” professional athletes. However, just like the general population, there are varying degrees within the group. The IQ may be low, but they may be able to have good baseball smarts. Saying Pineda will do well depending on how smart he is, well, it is just fairly silly.
This place is starting to sound like a MASH unit.
GM – so happy to see you here!
Thanks for the technical information. As you were a catcher at a Division 1 school and actually more recently than the 1800s, I think you have some great information to impart. Your fielding record tells me that you had to be a manager’s dream.
Just wanted to say that I’m so happy to have your voice added here.

randy, thanks. I actually bought my ticketd for all of the SWB games at McCoy two nights ago. They arrived yesterday. Not the seats I typically like but I took what was left. A guy I used to work with always got me front-row seats for those games. Well I emailed him yesterday and asked if he could get me better seats and he said I always should check with him ahead of time and he was going to look into it.
My dad always said I was impulsive.
So now I’ve paid a king’s ransom (well a king with a very small kingdom)
for tickets and they are not returnable. If he gets me the better seats, I will be giving these tickets away. If that happens and you want to travel this way, I’ll be happy to provide you with tickets to any of the games!

Go away for two days, come back and the conversation is still the same – Randy thinking Pineda stinks and intelligent people blowing up his arguments.
Anyway I am officially dubbing this the Spring of odd injuries
We’ve already got D-Rob hurting himself taking out the trash
David Price hurts his neck toweling off after a shower
and now Dom Brown hurts his neck sleeping on a bus
I am tempted to say that players this spring have been snake bit, but I’m going to hold off on that to see if someone actually does get bitten by a snake.
Sounds like Doug Bernier is throwing himself into the mix as a potential callup with his play this spring – always nice to see.
If Martin only came up with a gimpy groin after that fall yesterday, he’s lucky. That could have been a disaster for both teams. Lots of injuries all over baseball in the last few days.

five years on this blog hasn’t helped , that’s for sure.

First, Trisha, thank you for the compliment!
As for Randy, you miss the point about whether someone’s intelligence helps them. the answer is of course it helps them, but a person can be extraordinarily successful in sports with very limited IQ.
We have also heard that sometimes people are too smart for their own good always over analyzing every aspect of their game and they need to just see the ball and react to it.
You mention Rivera, I have no idea how smart he is, but when he is on the diamond he has excellent baseball smarts (and the best single pitch in the history of the game!)
ARod has excellent on the diamond baseball intelligence, but off the field, I have no idea how smart he is. Cano doesn’t strike me as having great on the field baseball IQ, but he has amazing wrists and is quick as lightning with his hands, but he may be a genius on his IQ???
My point is that IQ is not any indicator of how good a player will be on the field, I would say that physical talent is first, then the sport you are playing IQ along with the motivation/drive you have coming in next with overall IQ coming in after these factors. of course, within each group their are a ton of subsets, but my point at the beginning of this paragraph remains.

Trisha, I would say that Mussina was guilty of that at times. In his case, instead of going with what was working real well that day, he would say that is what the batter would expect me to throw and then he threw his 2nd best pitch and got hit. In his case, he was better to throw the pitch he was releasing well and focus on locating it and making the batter hot a good pitch. After the game he was smart enough to realize the mistake he made, but he wasn’t able to realize it during the game.
When the real games begin I will start to post my blogs and I will send the link here (I post about 120 times in a year. I call every pitch and this is the way I watch a game. i do watch on video tape most of the time as I don’t have 3.5 hours a day to watch, but I don’t miss action unless the game is a blow out.

People who know me understand that the comments I make are the ones I made before the play happened and many times I say I disagreed with something even though it worked out well and I give my opinion as to why. My predictions on players are in advance so that is easier to see, but over the years people know I just call it as I see it.
Elway all by his lonesome makes Denver a storied franchise. That city is a Football HOTbed, and The Rocks fanbase pales in comparison. The SkySox is a nice AAA franchise down in Colorado Springs. I think the Boomer example is a great one about intelligence. Catchers need to be intelligent because they need to see everything…of course you can’t see everything when you are in the bullpen
Just kidding, there were plenty of catchers that were superior physical specimens, but they weren’t the sharpest knife. That being said, there is a valid reason why a lot of managers were catchers.

I am hugely optimistic about the Yanks this year, but one popular optimism around here I don’t get.
I just can’t climb on the Phil Hughes wagon. I expect his ERA to land somewhere between his 2010 and his 2011 ERA, but I don’t expect him to lead the major leagues in run support per game (by more than a run) the way he did in 2010, which in my view is going to translate to a mediocre 2012.
How can anybody not like Donovan??
YF – when I tried to buy tickets I got this message:
Note: You’ve selected an away game that WILL NOT be played at this team’s stadium.
I think I’ll have to go right to McCoy.
wave your hat-
i agree on optimism on yanks in 2012.
i’m for some reason feeling good about hughes.
no particular reason except he seems to come back strong after a bad year. he doesn’t seem to put two in a row.

I think Hughes has suffered from “overanalytis” in the past.

He doesn’t want to read here then.

Neither does Pineda

over-anal-ytis?
he should blog here…maybe he does.
randy,
I hope you are right, because Phil appears to be the favorite over Garcia. I like Garcia myself, I think he managed to re-invent his career last year.
@shannondrayer: Saw on the drive thru Phoenix on the way to Mesa for game an electronic billboard w/ad for mattress co “Peyton Manning please sleep here!”
Ugh.
Please, don’t let him choose Zona.
Trisha, you may have to buy them through SWB’s site b/c it’s their home series. Try this:http://www.milb.com/schedule/i.....038;y=2012

“I don’t think the inability to repeat one’s mechanics are a consequence of what most people think of as intelligence.”
rich in nj-
do you think that aj knew that’s what his problem was?
that’s where intelligence would come in.

That is what a coach is supposed to do Randy. Was Granderson a dumb ass because he couldn’t hit lefties? Is he a genius now? or was he coached differently?
AJ had two really good pitches, but his major issue was when the fastball slowed by 4 MPH he had one good pitch and another decent one. He always had issues with keeping his delivery consistent so when the fastball slowed he became mediocre

Would that make Koufax a dumbass for the first 6 years of his career, or Ryan, Randy Johnson or Mussina for a couple of years? Did he revert to dumbassism?
