YANKEES (8-8)
Brett Gardner CF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Raul Ibanez DH
Bill Hall 3B
Justin Maxwell RF
Dewayne Wise LF
Gustavo Molina C

RHP Ivan Nova (0-1, 6.23)
Nova vs. Orioles

ORIOLES (5-7)
Endy Chavez LF
J.J. Hardy SS
Nick Markakis DH
Adam Jones CF
Chris Davis 1B
Matt Wieters C
Mark Reynolds 3B
Ryan Flaherty RF
Robert Andino 2B

RHP Alfredo Simon (0-0, 0.00)
Simon vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m., MLB Network

WEATHER: Clouds in the sky, but not really threatening. Wind blowing from right to left.

UMPIRES: HP Wally Bell, 1B Tim Welke, 2B Chad Fairchild, 3B Bill Welke

BALTIMORE PEN: After Alfredo Simon, the Orioles are scheduled to pitch RHP Jon Link, but the rest of their bullpen is listed as TBA. Could be that most of the guys made the afternoon trip to Orlando to face the Braves. The O’s are a split squad today.

MARKAKIS PLAYING AGAIN: Recovering from an abdominal injury, Nick Markakis has played in just two spring training games including 2-for-3 with a double on Saturday.

THINNED OUT: After a round of 14 cuts, the Yankees are down to 56 players in camp. Kyle Higashioka, who was part of the first round of cuts, is back for the day to be an emergency catcher off the bench.

UPDATE, 7:32 p.m.: Not the first inning Nova was hoping for. He gave up four hits in the first, including home runs by Adam Jones — to dead center — and Matt Wieters. It’s an early 4-0 lead for the Orioles.

UPDATE, 7:36 p.m.: That’s one of the few balls I’ve seen Raul Ibanez hit hard this spring, but it’s still an out to deep left field. He’s down to an .069 batting average.

UPDATE, 7:49 p.m.: Single, sac bunt, single to start the bottom of the second. That’s another Orioles run off Nova and it’s a 5-1 Orioles lead.

UPDATE, 8:16 p.m.: There’s a 1-2-3 third inning from Nova. If he can show an ability to make an adjustment and get himself straightened out, he might turn a negative into a positive.

UPDATE, 8:41 p.m.: Two bad innings and two good innings for Nova, who’s been relieved by David Phelps to start the fifth. Nova retired seven of the last eight hitters he faced, three of them with strikeouts.

UPDATE, 9:07 p.m.: Nothing good about this scene. Robinson Cano has been pulled form the game after being hit by a pitch in either the left hand or wrist. He seemed to be in fairly significant pain at one point.

UPDATE, 9:10 p.m.: Mason Williams just pinch ran for Teixeira and was thrown out by Wieters trying to steal second. Williams stays in the game to play center.

so where are the orioles playing ST this year? i know when i used to go down there, they played in fort lauderdale in the same stadium the yankees had ST in decades ago…

  3. tomingeorgia March 18th, 2012 at 7:12 pm

It’s 85 in Sarasota, and Buck is bundled up, as usual, like it’s 35. He has ague?

Sarasota, in refurbished Ed Smith Stadium.

It’s not 85 here but great weather, all in all a beautiful day to be on Siesta Beach, named #1 in the U.S. last year by Dr. Beach

    MG,

You are living in Sarasota?, that’s a beautiful place to live, with the gulf just in front of it, close to Miami and Tampa but still a nice distance away. Plenty of golf courses around, not bad MG.

  7. tomingeorgia March 18th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

It’s nice to see somebody wearing real uniforms.

  8. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

From here on out, Nova needs to kick it in.

  9. luis March 18th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

    Nice curveball

  10. luis March 18th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Was that the slider or the CU?

I’ve been in Sarasota about a year, it’s far and away the best place to live in Florida. Tampa and St Pete are close (Miami is 200 miles) so I get to see the Yankees at the Trop, the Rangers when they play the Lightning, and get a weekly walk on Siesta Beach with friends, it was packed this morning with snowbirds.

  13. Benny Blanco March 18th, 2012 at 7:27 pm

    Can someone explain how
Aceves leaves the yankees and starts throwing 94?

  14. randy l. March 18th, 2012 at 7:27 pm

i lived out on siesta key for most of the 80′s and 90′s in the winter time. often lived right on the beach. great place to spend the winter.

there’s been tons of baseball there with the pirates in bradenton, white sox/reds/ orioles at ed smith and orioles out at twin lakes.
    and tons of golf courses.

  15. MG March 18th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

And I also play golf with a retired LI cop who is a big Yankees fan and posts on RAB, we laugh every week about the intensity of the posters.

  16. MaineYankee March 18th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

And there is your AAA candidate. :D:

  17. tomingeorgia March 18th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

    Nova will be fine.

  26. luis March 18th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    MG,

My sister in law used to live in Bradenton, she worked at the tennis academy there ( Boletieri ). I used to go there to visit her back in the late 90′s. Loved the golf courses.

Spring training may be meaningless for established veterans, but for a guy like Nova they are actually pretty important as he doesn’t have a track record to fall back on…

    Nice oppo for Tex

  28. MG March 18th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

that was an impressive swing by Teix on a 2 strike pitch…

  29. blake March 18th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

That might be the best swing Tex has taken in two years…..

  30. luis March 18th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

  34. luis March 18th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Unhinged swing by Ibanez, i was surprised how far it went

luis, the whole area is very nice, IMG has taken over one of the country clubs and Bollitieri’s Academy is based there. I don’t play as much golf as I might (1x a week, too much else to do) but there are lots of courses, the best one is Sara Bay Country Club.

  37. Jerkface March 18th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

And one of the things that is a knock on Nova as a prospect is his command. Leaving his offspeed stuff up and middle and getting into unfavorable counts isn’t something you can hand wave away as ‘spring training’.

Not saying he is bad or will be bad, but a guy like Nova should be impressing and showing improvement.

  38. Villa Nova-Ya March 18th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

that is really funny, it’s a conversation that happens often here.

I’m not a huge fan of The Broken Egg but haven’t eaten at the one on Siesta Key, they have a couple in town that aren’t all that good. It’s also really crowded during season, after it ends in a few weeks we’ll probably go there after our Sunday beach walk, where the bikini watching is always a pleasure.

    Jerkface,

I understand he isn’t a established veteran but isn’t the purpose of spring training to work on your pitches and to build up stamina?

When the season starts; if nova pitches well in his first time thru the rotation then this stupid game against baltimore will be forgotten about.

Nova is a pitcher who works hard and understands the importance of being competitive and pitching well. He knows nothing is promised. He doesnt strike me as someone that has a lackadaisical approach. He’s a tough kid.

Oi! College broadcast talking about Bobby Valentine. Saying his voice is something or another and he can be glib. But one thing is that he’s really akamai (smart).

The other guy asked how long before he wears a fake mustache and glasses. Is this something Bobby V has done previously?

  48. MG March 18th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Everything Nova throws is up in the zone tonight except for the slider that got a K in the 1st inning…

“WOW!! what a play from Gardner!”

Seems to be a recurring theme in Yankee games.

  53. Jerkface March 18th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

I understand he isn’t a established veteran but isn’t the purpose of spring training to work on your pitches and to build up stamina?

Yes of course, but its also for players who are not guaranteed anything to show that they have improved something enough to be considered. Nova has had 1 good season with the Yankees, and even that season showed some signs of being a little flukey good, mainly things like his FIP, LOB%, BABIP, etc.. We as Yankee fans are betting on his determination to succeed, the development of his slider, and general improvements for him to keep being an above average pitcher. We like Nova as a dude, his rookie season was exciting, so go Nova, but because he is not CC SAbathia he doesn’t get the spring training pass that a vet does.

Yeah, he got thrown out of a game, I think he was with the Mets but not sure, and he “snuck” back into the dugout with the mustache and glasses thing. I thought it was hilarious.

  55. m March 18th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Yes, MY. A not so deserted island. :)

  56. Jerkface March 18th, 2012 at 7:58 pm

  63. m March 18th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

  69. ron March 18th, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Also if hughes has a great spring, and pettitte was back now,and pitching well, with the way nova is pitching now,he would get sent down,if the reg season started tomorrow.

Garcia traded or in the pen.

  70. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2012 at 8:09 pm

cano has only had a handful of good at bats that I’ve seen, this ST. Most have been grounders and lazy flies.

  71. Cashmoney March 18th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    AAO
He is a big drawing card just as Strasburg was and prolly still is, I can see the Nats motivation to bring him up just base on that, asap, that is. I am looking forward to his debut if he does come to the show. Just thought he is extremely young and could probably use more abs in the minor, but I am not privy to his development so good for him if he does get an opportunity.

  72. ron March 18th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    Don’t start on cano.

    Cash,

I think thy will try to hold him back enough this year to gain an extra year of team control. Not sure how long they have to hold him back for that.

  78. m March 18th, 2012 at 8:29 pm

2 good bounce-back innings for Nova.

  79. Jerkface March 18th, 2012 at 8:29 pm

With the exception of the warning track shot by Jones, Nova did a great job the last 2 innings getting ground balls and some good Ks

  80. luis March 18th, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Second good inning from Nova in a row, it seems that he has settled down a bit… To be fair, aside from the two HR’s, the other hits have been on the ground.

  81. Jerkface March 18th, 2012 at 8:32 pm

To be fair, aside from the two HR’s, the other hits have been on the ground.

True but ground ballers will give up hits, its the nature of the beast, so Nova has to work on cutting down his walks and his HRs or start striking out more batters.

Improving his slider will go towards the latter, and it is improving.

  82. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2012 at 8:38 pm

bad base running, Wise. Your perfect game catch can’t help you on the bases.

  83. luis March 18th, 2012 at 8:40 pm

    =======================

Spot on….I think he already has 4 k’s, so that’s encouraging….He also has to work in missing down rather than up in the plate

  84. blake March 18th, 2012 at 8:42 pm

Nova made some goodand pitches to Jones before he hit the homer….actually some really good pitches ….he’s just hung a breaking ball there and that happens…..Nova is good when he keeps the ball down and throws strikes…..its really as simple as that for him….his stuff is good enough to win if he just does those things.

  85. luis March 18th, 2012 at 8:42 pm

Well…I couldn’t see how tough the play was, but Hall has butter hands

  86. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2012 at 8:44 pm

  87. luis March 18th, 2012 at 8:46 pm

AAO He is a big drawing card just as Strasburg was and prolly still is, I can see the Nats motivation to bring him up just base on that, asap, that is. I am looking forward to his debut if he does come to the show. Just thought he is extremely young and could probably use more abs in the minor, but I am not privy to his development so good for him if he does get an opportunity.

    ———————–

True he is very young and I’m sure if he struggles there will be ppl that say he was rushed. Hopefully he has a long productive career. I can’t wait to see him either.

With Andy not being ready for awhile and not completely sure if he can in fact make a comeback, I think NYY should just stay patient and roll into the season with 6 starters. Designate Freddy for the long relief role and see what happens.

No way to make friends with the catchers, Ivan.

    “Mark Feinsand

    Also In Baseball

Ivan Nova threw catcher Gustavo Molina under the bus after giving up five runs in four innings, four of them in the first: “I was shaking too much. That slowed my game. We threw a couple bad pitches, like the curveball for a homer and the slider for the other homer. In that situation, you have to move the hitter and we didn’t do it. Sometimes you want to throw that pitch and he doesn’t call that pitch. You start shaking and you get out of what you want to do. I think that happened out there.”

I’ll tell you one thing, we have at least two pitchers in AAA knocking. Something has to give.

Waiting on Cano info was a sweat fest.

Yankeefem, Scully is just like a great storyteller – I could listen to him all day. And he’s got a soothing timbre, similar to T.S. Eliot (and I’d know, of course).

I missed Mason’s AB trying to find stuff on Cano, but I read the blog comments. Will have to watch on MLB.com when they put the game up.

blake, and in the future SP, which I was referring to.

Pujols playing and love hearing Scully call the game.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

Better get your fill of him, because he’s likely retiring after this season and cutting back on his games this year to just the West divion home games. Just think, next year, you’ll get lots of Charlie Steiner and Steve Lyons or Rick Monday. Regardless of what anyone says, he’s never been my favorite voice of baseball.

I am sorry we won’t get to see The Father play catch with his Son. Was looking forward to that, at least while the Father was still around.

luis, LOL. I bet the Christian community (at least, the more uptight segments of it) would not have

cared for such metaphors coming from John Sterling, but how could you have avoided them?

Some kid on another site has a pic of Montero (in pinstripes) and beneath it it reads: What Would Jesus Do?

Yes, we missed out on all that pun fun, and worse – we’ll miss out on the bat (for six years, any way ;).
