Yankees injury report

A quick rundown of the injuries suffered in Yankees camp this spring…

Robinson Cano
Bruised hand
Hit by a pitch last night, Cano was pulled from the game, then he went for x-rays that came back negative. He’s going to be reevaluated on Tuesday, but the Yankees don’t seem overly concerned.

Derek Jeter
Sore left calf
Jeter felt some soreness in his calf during Wednesday’s game in Dunedin. He finished the game but hasn’t played since. Today he’s scheduled to get treatment at the stadium. He hasn’t done baseball activities since Thursday. He’s expected to play Tuesday.

Russell Martin
Tight groin/hamstring
Martin was scratched from yesterday’s road trip because of some stiffness that he says is between his groin and hamstring. He felt something similar a few years ago and decided to be cautious about it this year. He’s expected to play Tuesday.

Nick Swisher
Sore groin
An MRI came back negative, but Swisher hasn’t played since feeling something “tug” running out of the box on Wednesday. He’s been going through regular baseball drills and is expected to play on Tuesday. Like Martin, Swisher said he wouldn’t have come out of the lineup if this were the regular season.

Dave Robertson
Bruised right foot
The most infamous Yankees injury of the spring seems to have resolved itself. Robertson stumbled down a step while carrying a box at his house and he hasn’t played in two weeks, but he threw a bullpen yesterday and is scheduled to throw another one tomorrow. He could be in a game within a week or so and the expectation is that he’ll be ready for Opening Day.

Freddy Garcia
Swollen right hand
Hit by a comebacker on Wednesday, Garcia has been shutdown for a few days. He’s skipping a scheduled minor league start this afternoon but could be back in a game as early as Friday. X-rays showed no broken bones, and Garcia’s simply been waiting for the swelling to go down.

Eduardo Nunez
Bruised right hand
Although he still had the hand wrapped after the game, Nunez played last night and said everything felt fine. He’s now played in back-to-back games after missing nearly two weeks because of soreness than lingered longer than expected. He suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in Clearwater.

Ramiro Pena
Sprained right ankle
Pena is scheduled to take batting practice off Brad Meyers on Tuesday, which seems to indicate that he’s pretty close to returning from a sprained ankle suffered while sliding into second base on Thursday. He’s been walking around the clubhouse with no noticeable limp.

Austin Romine
Sore back
Romine missed time with a sore back last season as well, so the Yankees decided to be extra cautious when his back began feeling sore this spring. Romine has not played in a game and just started taking swings two days ago. He might be able to get in a game late in spring training, but he’s spent most of his time just trying to make sure the back doesn’t become a lingering issue.

George Kontos
Sore oblique
Injured in his first bullpen of the spring, Kontos waited longer than expected before getting back on a mound, but he finally made his spring debut last night with a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Russell Branyan
Sore back
Something of a wild card for the Yankees platoon DH job, Branyan hasn’t had a chance to plead his case because he’s been shutdown with a sore back. He received epidurals last week, but it’s still not clear when he’ll be ready to play.

Manny Delcarmen
Strained lat
The former Red Sox reliever hasn’t pitched in a game this season, but he threw a bullpen yesterday. Based on the timing of other pitchers he seems to be on track to get in a game in about a week.

Dan Burawa
Torn oblique
The biggest long-term injury of the camp could force Burawa to miss significant time. The young relief pitcher seemed to make a fast impression — both Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman mentioned him at different points — but he had to shut it down at

I think the Yanks are indeed going to fast track Mason and start him in High-A as they believe he can handle it and at the same time the OF in Charleston is going to be crowded with Ravel Santana in RF, Eduardo Sosa CF, Daniel Lopez LF Kevin De Leon and Ben Gamel all needing regular playing time.

    Mason will be in Tampa with J.R. Murphy, Gary Sanchez, Anderson Feliz, Slade Heathcott and maybe Ramon Flores….That Tampa team initially won’t be as stacked as the Charleston team will be with the likes of;

    Eduardo Sosa CF
    Cito Culver SS
    Ravel Santana RF
    Dante Bichette JR 3B
    Rey Nunez DH/1B
    Tyler Austin DH/1B/3B
    Angelo Gumbs 2B
    Isaiah Tejada C
    Daniel Lopez LF

but could still be very good prospect-wise if they do something like this in Tampa

    Mason CF
    Anderson Feliz 2B
    Slade Heathcott RF
    Gary Sanchez C/DH
    Ramon Flores LF
    JR Muprhy DH/C
    Kyle Roller 1B
    Rob Segedin 3B
    Jose Mojica SS

On second glance that Tampa lineup may actually be better than that Charleston lineup!!!
Lots of high ceiling guys in the system poised to make names this season…

  4. austinmac March 19th, 2012 at 3:02 pm

    Tom,

That was a wicked hop that hit Cabrera. I can’t blame that one on his fielding and am just glad it wasn’t a Yankee 3B.

  5. GreenBeret7 March 19th, 2012 at 3:05 pm

The biggest mistake the Yankees could make with Mason Williams is to let his look at the right field stands. Let him hit the way he’s always hit. When he’s a little smarter and a little stronger, Long or Piniella can teach him to pull the ball like Piniella did with Mattingly. First, he needs to be smart enough to know that not every pitch is meant to be pulled. Guys like Giambi and lately, Teixeira forgot that as soon as they saw right field.

    austin,
He had no chance. Played third years ago and know why they call it the hot corner. A suit of armor is sometimes appropriate, no matter what your fielding skill. Miggie went to the hospital, and I haven’t heard any reports.

Bronx – Fantastic afternoon reading, thanks!

  11. austinmac March 19th, 2012 at 3:29 pm

After his 4-5 first game, Cespedes has struggled. He may need a good bit of time to hit MLB pitching. That is quite a risk the A’s took.

  12. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Really sad I missed Dustin Hoffman chat, because everyone got it wrong. The correct answer is ‘Dick Tracy’.

  13. m March 19th, 2012 at 3:39 pm

I don’t want to even look at the comments by Freddie. I do feel for the guy though. But the Yankees gotta do what’s best for the team.

Even before Andy signed, it wasn’t looking like Garcia would be starting.

For now, it’s best he stop talking and collect his paycheck every two weeks. And answer the phone when Cash calls because it’s probably opportunity calling.

  14. mick March 19th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

    what did freddy say?

  15. tomingeorgia March 19th, 2012 at 3:44 pm

Francona did an excellent job on ESPN this afternoon. A pleasure to listen to.

  16. m March 19th, 2012 at 3:44 pm

Melancon’s ERA just shot up from a 2 or 3 to nearly 10, on one swing.

  17. Rich in NJ March 19th, 2012 at 3:46 pm

“For now, it’s best he stop talking and collect his paycheck every two weeks. And answer the phone when Cash calls because it’s probably opportunity calling.”

While I agree in the larger context of the best interests of the Yankees, Garcia may think that talking will accelerate his departure (it has happened before for other players on some team), and since time is running out on his career, I can’t say that I blame him.

  18. m March 19th, 2012 at 3:50 pm

Good point. But if we’re talking exit strategy, then his agent should approach Cashman.

But, the press likely put him on the spot and he likely couldn’t feign excitement about Andy’s return. And how could he? They were never teammates. And it’s clearly a sign that his room in the inn is not his for long.

  22. stuckey March 19th, 2012 at 3:55 pm

I doubt the Yankees need much motivation to move Garcia at this point.

The monetary savings may be enough.

I don’t think they’ll move him to the Sox, Rays, Jays, Tigers, Rangers or Halos, but other than that if the right deal presents itself, they’d may well bite, regardless of anything Garcia says.

  23. Shame Spencer March 19th, 2012 at 3:56 pm

I’ve been looking out for you all day Jerkface, and I was TOTALLY going to mention Dick Tracy (I’m a Madonna fan, sue me) but decided against it in favor of Hook trivia.

Anyway….. how hard did you laugh (along with the rest of America) when Lori finally discovered Can’t-Ac-Carl was missing?

  24. GreenBeret7 March 19th, 2012 at 3:56 pm

    Players for the Trenton game

    More: Rosario 4. PITCHERS: Marshall 1-3, Stoneburner 4-6, Montgomery 7-8, Guerra 9. @TrentonThunder

    “Thunder” lineup for today: A. Almonte 8, Mustelier 5, Murphy 2, Almonte 9, Lyerly 3, Higashioka 0, Johnson 0, Pirela 6, Cayones 7 …

  25. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 3:57 pm

M’s released Kuo, who looked real bad in spring, might be a guy to look at on a minor league deal to try and get fixed. He is dealing with anxiety of some sort and coming off an arm injury. If the stuff is there they just need to fix the yips. He was so good as a lefty reliever some team will take the chance.

  26. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Anyway….. how hard did you laugh (along with the rest of America) when Lori finally discovered Can’t-Ac-Carl was missing?

Very hard. If she put as much effort shrieking like a harpy that ‘MY BOY IS MISSING!!!’ into actually… paying attention to him, he wouldn’t be missing in the first place. The best part of the revelation is that he was upstairs, so he snuck out a window or something? With a gun? Snuck past everyone while wearing that ridiculous hat? Hershels infinite ammo shotgun was also quite dumb, as is the CDC revelation that Rick decided to keep to himself. Another lame mystery solved, go team!

Since the farm is now burned to the ground / overrun and most of the useless ancillary characters removed, I am hoping the writers can salvage season 3 now that they are free from the plot lines spun by the first show runner.

  27. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 4:05 pm

reallly amazing how few injuries the yankees have had this ST. (knocks on wood…)

    Jack Curry ? @JackCurryYES

Yankees say Pettitte will have press conference in Tampa on Tuesday at 6 PM.

  29. tomingeorgia March 19th, 2012 at 4:09 pm

    Darvish is pitching now.

  30. GreenBeret7 March 19th, 2012 at 4:11 pm

The only serious injury is to Daniel Burawa. He probably won’t pitch again until late May or early June.

  31. mick March 19th, 2012 at 4:15 pm

sounds like their was a serious injury to freddy’s feelings…stay away from the knives

  32. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 4:15 pm

“‘I don’t really care,’ Garcia said, when asked about Pettitte’s return. ‘That’s their decision. I’m here to pitch and that’s what I want to do.’

When asked if Pettitte’s addition was good for the team, Garcia threw his hands up, seemingly exasperated by the turn of events.

‘I don’t know man,’ said Garcia, who like Hughes a day before, gave a lukewarm reaction. ‘Ask the people. I don’t know. I guess …You play with the Yankees, nothing surprises you.’”

Jerkface, asked teen daughter if she ever saw TWD. “Oh, I love that show!”. But she also like True Blood.

Anyway, apparently the dr lady on TWD is from Hawaii. She said she didn’t like zombie stuff, but was hooked when she read the script. The AMCguys asked her to look at it, so they must have thought she was a fit for the part.

  35. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 4:17 pm

btw, bleacher report and carig are stirring the pot, hughes said nothing critical at all. he just wasn’t as effusive in praising andy’s return.

  36. mick March 19th, 2012 at 4:19 pm

hughsie will step it up even more now…

  37. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 4:20 pm

Anyway, apparently the dr lady on TWD is from Hawaii.

    Doctor Lady?

  38. m March 19th, 2012 at 4:21 pm

Hughes had only nice things to say. He did, as he has his whole Yankee career, say that he only can control what he does.

Agreed. Media stirring pot. Not good.

  39. m March 19th, 2012 at 4:22 pm

    Main character? Caucasian?

  40. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

I don’t think there is a doctor lady ! Actresses name?

  41. Giuseppe Franco March 19th, 2012 at 4:28 pm

The only doctor on the show this season was a male veterinarian.

  42. Bronx Jeers March 19th, 2012 at 4:28 pm

I can’t blame Freddy for being a bit frustrated. He wants to pitch for the Yankees. That’s why he signed here when he may have gotten a sweeter deal elsewhere. At the same time I’m sure he understands that business is business.

  43. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 4:29 pm

…again, where is chad when these things happen?

CHAD, you’re a find journalist, get the facts straight and spell everything correctly, a credit to Mizzou J-School and Uncle Walter himself. BUT you’ve got a seat at a table very few people get, why don’t we every hear anything from you that everybody else doesn’t have? Why do Klapish and Carig and Kepner and Sherman and Olney always get stuff you dont? You seem to have no sources inside the team despite traveling with them. You seem never to get any quotes that aren’t in everybody else’s reports.

Get in there and find stuff out, turn over some rocks, make connections, find sources! C’mon buddy, this is your big opportunity, don’t be a fly on the wall!

  44. m March 19th, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Haha. Lori Grimes. The clueless one.

  51. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

If the ‘things that happened’ are reactions to Pettitte’s signing, Chad already posted the quotes and so far no one has a new quote, just re-cut the original quotes from the day pettitte was signed.

I’m not sure how to feel about the hooded figure in the woods. I saw her and immediately loved her.. but I am a little concerned that a show that has mostly stuck with ‘real life’ stuff is now going to be responsible for introducing a character that has zombie slaves and swings swords.

Hands down though, these people are the most ill prepared to survive the zombie-apocalypse. They must be. Personally, I’ve always had a contingency plan. And if I wasn’t, I’d figure one out by the time I was 2-3 months in.

Oh… and yay baseball! (this means no one can yell at me about unrelated posts)

indians’ broadcaster threw out this gem from manny acta: 90% of first pitch strikes that are swung at are outs. don’t know it it’s true, but it’s very interesting.

Greg Maddux once said only 15% of players who steal second score!

The league hit a collective: .330 .336 .523 .859 on the first pitch so I really doubt the accuracy of that stat.

  68. Jerkface March 19th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

I think, much like Greg Maddux telling Chris Young that only 15% of stealers go on to score, Manny Acta is trying to use an unverifiable (for most baseball players) statistic to try and impart some kind of lesson in strike throwing.

Y’sGuy, Chad hasn’t been on the beat as long as some of these guys.

It takes a long, long time to develop “relationships” and contacts. Further, he’s not working for the

kind of paper that organizational insider types care to “plant” something in.

We also have no idea what his editor asks of him, what he gets paid, etc. You’re being unfair.

  76. m March 19th, 2012 at 5:14 pm

Pettitte (in response to a ? about how weird it will be without Jorge) said he obviously has some comfort with Cervelli.

  77. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Also, at big-time papers, there’s usually a columnist and sidebar writer floating around in addition
to the beat reporter. Those types have their own contacts as well, and all 3 can be chiming in trying to get something to beat the rival paper. Even though newspapers have downsized, there’s still way more in the rolodex of names and contacts at your disposal that has been institutionalized within big-time news organizations.

There are guys who break stories when they’re not even at the ballpark; they just make
phonecalls and in some cases, people call them. And approach to coverage, as well as resources, really vary from paper to paper. For instance, a beat reporter from a modest paper cannot afford to “piss off” the Yankees by digging too deep: he/she will find themselves shut out, without the backing of a heavyweight paper behind them. If that happens, they’re basically thoroughly unable to operate.

With the Freddy thing, maybe he was talking to one or two reporters at the time. You can’t be everywhere at once.

  88. mick March 19th, 2012 at 5:31 pm

that kind of digging for inside information is the essence of journalism.
    ============
athletes know how to hide it well, they tell you what they want you to know, mostly nothing…take jeter for example.

freddy let it be known he wasn’t happy…doesn’t take much digging

  89. luis March 19th, 2012 at 5:31 pm

    mick March 19th, 2012 at 5:28 pm

Freddy knows he’s gone, doesn’t need the media to further his case for a trade…abreu for freddy could happen

    ==========================

Abreu would be an upgrade for Ibanez….He is a professional and patient hitter

  90. mick March 19th, 2012 at 5:32 pm

  91. mick March 19th, 2012 at 5:33 pm

“that kind of digging for inside information is the essence of journalism. regurgitating what’s fed to you is pure PR. a dog with a recorder attached to his collar can get the same quotes everybody else has.”

Arguments have always been lost on me.

If Chad’s style is not of your liking, you have many other options. It is not like the service you seem to want performed for you isn’t being offered elsewhere.

Chad has a job. Its up to his editors/bosses to decide if what he brings to the table is what they want representing their publication and/or if he draws enough of an audience.

Again, I FULLY understand if you don’t happen to like Chad’s style, but the days of 3 NY tabloids being the only source of Yankee news is LONG over.

Why can’t Chad be Chad and you follow whom you like, the options of which are plentiful?

Why, to you, does every beat reporter have to function that SAME way.

    What’s wrong with variety?

  100. Betsy March 19th, 2012 at 5:37 pm

Kay thinks the Yankees will go with Nova and Hughes………I guess that means he thinks Pineda will be sent down.

Oh great, now here goes La Greca killing Kuroda. Time to shut this off?

No mention of Pineda by Kay.

  107. Betsy March 19th, 2012 at 5:40 pm

Ok, I’m shutting Kay off. Sorry – Hughes has ? over him to be sure, but I can’t deal with hearing about him in the pen. No great loss missing Kay, who never liked him anyway. Hughes will have a month or so to prove he’s improved his secondary pitches and his ability to put hitters away. If he does that, then he’s not going to the pen – for the Yankees or for anyone

  108. mick March 19th, 2012 at 5:41 pm

they are reaching on the kay show…we discussed this to death for the entire weekend…nothing new ..they are hacks with little or no insight that the common man doesn’t have

  109. Giuseppe Franco March 19th, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Listening to the Cone podcast the most interesting thing I heard was Cone saying he was going to do “40 to 50 games” on the YES Network this season – a substantial increase from last season.

I’m hoping the more we hear Cone the less we hear Flaherty (although I’m not holding my breath).

  110. stuckey March 19th, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Wasn’t a whole lotta difference between Ibanez and Abreu last season.

Ibanez slugged more, Abrea got to first base more.

  111. m March 19th, 2012 at 5:41 pm

La Greca and that caller are way off.

And even if something happens to everyone behind CC, there is some depth.

This guy is a wet blanket.

  112. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 5:42 pm

listen if chad want to hang around and transcribe what everybody else has for a few years, then go back to columbia and work for the daily tribune, thats fine. i just think he has a great opportunity he’s letting pass him by.

Thanks JAP, he will certainly be an upgrade from Ibanez, he can still play some defense, but most of all he can hit and has an incredible situational hitting approach…He may be able to talk some sense to certain players that come the PS just turn in to all or nothing hitters ;) ..You know who i am talking about. :)

Being a short term solution it allows the team to assess their options in the off season…you keep Hughes as well

Yes, I think I’ve an inkling who you’re talking about ;) . With Abreu, just start the count at 3-2 :D . We could use a patient, but good contact hitter. Don’t know about Hughes being saved, though – I think there’s going to be a blockbuster (hopefully, not with him in it!).

The caller was just an ignorant whiner.

I think our pitching is good and deep.

Though Jerome Williams is a local boy and I’m pulling for him, the fact he’s their penciled in (pre-injury) starter is a knock.

    You’re very welcome!

I really don’t think the content of the blog threads has anything to do with the quality of the blog – the members/posters have much more to do with it. Still, different strokes for different folks. I much prefer Chad’s style to Pete’s, who in addition to blathering on about Springsteen every 5 minutes, was obnoxious.

  125. luis March 19th, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Putting Hughes in the pen would be very dumb IMO….First you want to see if he has what you need going forward, second he has more value as an SP if you want to trade him, third it gives you options for 2013, remember that next sesason we may be without Kuroda and Pettite. Are the Yankees going to plug to rookies in the rotation?…Not likely

  126. Giuseppe Franco March 19th, 2012 at 5:49 pm

  128. Ys Guy March 19th, 2012 at 5:52 pm

    ^^that’s the Angels rotation.

  130. luis March 19th, 2012 at 5:52 pm

    *two* rookies

  131. Betsy March 19th, 2012 at 5:52 pm

M, but the caller was still hilariously depressed. La Greca is a Mets fan – not a closet one, though. He can be ok at times, but please. While I don’t think Kuroda is going to put up NL type numbers, there is no reason he won’t be good. I guess Pineda sucks, Nova sucks and Hughes/Garcia sucks. Might as well forfeit the season.

Hughes has serious ? to answer, but Kay is not one to discuss him because he can’t be objective; he’s never liked him. He trashed him as not having good stuff when he returned from injury in 2007 and was still struggling. I think he holds it against him for not being as good as the Yankees hyped him to be.

  132. LGY March 19th, 2012 at 5:52 pm

if andy is on, he’s not a #5….he will slot in behind kuroda…lefty-righty-lefty

  135. Betsy March 19th, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Luis, putting Hughes in the pen would really tell me a lot about how little the Yankees know about pitching. Whether or not he’s a part of their future, you can’t keep yanking him around. He’s healthy now – either start him, send him down or trade him

  136. GreenBeret7 March 19th, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Sorrym but, it isn’t Chad’s reporting or, according to some, the lack of it that caused people to move away from here. It was much of the extra curricular BS that was and is going on. nd, yes, I’m well aware that I was part of that Bs. There were plenty that contributed to that. You have every right to have and express an uninformed opinion, but I imagine MLB clubhouses are like ANY other community/professional environment.

They have their politics, pecking orders and seniority like any other working place.

If you want to accuse Chad of not being ambitious enough, having NO idea what goes on behind the scenes, you have that right.

Not sure why you’d want to use it though.
