    Whats’s the difference.

Jeter was done last April anyway.

Gb- i don’t think they’re going to be in a hurry to trade Freddy, nor anyone else right now. Not until they have a better idea of what Andy is going to bring.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

Joe, just a joke. As I stated a few days ago. I don’t think a trade gets made before the middle or end of May. If Garcia becomes a malcontent, that may change.

“seriously, read pete’s post from this morning, its an excellent post going through all kinds of things going on in sock’s camp and full of his own opinion and analysis. there’s no ‘company line’ there, in fact he pretty much always blows up the company line.”

Ys – But Pete is a Sox fan. Admittedly so. I still think there’s some ‘company line’-ness to his take on that team.

Well, I guess this got lost in all the fuss a couple of threads back or else it’s already been posted. It’s certainly a very interesting survey!

Since so much of the conversation is still about pitching, here’s a very interesting article from SABR. Yes, the survey is old (1978), but I’m pretty sure still on the money. So much for “pitching wins” as just an old canard So in case this hasn’t yet been posted, here goes -

I like this lineup, can we just bat jeter 8-9th? :(

  16. GreenBeret7 March 20th, 2012 at 2:48 pm

There has to be a lot of concern over the health of the rotation in Atlanta. Jurjjins falls on the mound.

  17. Shame Spencer March 20th, 2012 at 2:49 pm

People tried to tell me Atlanta would compete this year against their division… no shot. I think the Nats have a better chance.

  18. Ys Guy March 20th, 2012 at 2:51 pm

shane, exactly! the fish might beat them out, too. im looking for phils/nats/fish neck and neck to the finish line.

  19. Irreverent Discourse March 20th, 2012 at 2:51 pm

shame – Atlanta “competed” last year and they aren’t exactly worse… why would they not compete this year? I think anyone assuming the Nats are going to magically find an offense this year isn’t paying attention :p They over-achieved a little last year and they still need to win 9-10 more games to think about making the playoffs.

It made no sense to play Jeter today anyway. he wasn’t going to play again until Friday. Might as well give him today off too.

  22. Shame Spencer March 20th, 2012 at 2:55 pm

YS – I agree. The Marlins are either going to fall apart or surprise some people.

ID – I didn’t think they were as good as they looked when they were winning last year. And like you said, they’re bringing back the same team that collapsed at the end of last season… I just think they’ll be worse this year. I have no support for this opinion other than I think the Braves blow. *shrugs*

  23. Erin March 20th, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Bryan Hoch ?Andy Pettitte just completed his bullpen session, said he felt good. Well, “terrible” at first, but Russell Martin got him going.

  24. GreenBeret7 March 20th, 2012 at 2:58 pm

Wheth Jurrjens is stepping in a hole on the mound or not, he’s wearing a brace and has two weak knees. If he hurts his arm, he and the Braves are toast. add to the fact that he’s getting hammered all spring.

  25. Ys Guy March 20th, 2012 at 2:58 pm

zimmerman missed 60 games last year and was not himself the rest of the time. they added gio gonzalez and edwin jackson and are going to have strassberg healthy and ready to go. werth is in his second year there and that is often better than a fa’s first time around with a team. young pitching. then there’s harper. does he make it up before the asb as their CF? if he does he’s likely a big upgrade over bernadina. and they added storen as a closer.

they are probably still a year or two away, but that is a team on the rise while the phillies get older and more injured and start the season (at least) without thier best 2 hitters.

  26. Irreverent Discourse March 20th, 2012 at 3:00 pm

shame – lol, excellent :) I just don’t see anyone stepping up and knocking them off yet… and without the Cardinals offense there to chase them down the NL landscape is pretty thin.

  27. Ys Guy March 20th, 2012 at 3:01 pm

…see what happens when you bookmark natsinsider? :) i also have fishstripes but nothing for the braves so far, maybe that ‘splains my prediction…

  28. GreenBeret7 March 20th, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I wouldn’t mind seeing NYYs get Bernadina as the 4th or 5th outfielder. Good defense at all 3 outfield spots, some power and good speed.

  29. Ys Guy March 20th, 2012 at 3:06 pm

think about adding gonzalez, jackson, strassburg, wang and storen to any staff, that’s a serious upgrade.

  30. Irreverent Discourse March 20th, 2012 at 3:09 pm

My toughts on Gio are well known, Wang and Jackson are crapshoots and they are not “adding” Storen…

They already had good seasons from Lannen and Zimmermann… they are not “improving” that drastically at all…

  31. Erin March 20th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

  33. Ys Guy March 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm

strassburg’s not an upgrade? you think zimmerman’s 795 ops and only 100 games is going to happen again? and who’s gonna carry the phils with ryan out for who-knows-how-long and utley the same and maybe done?
lannan and zimmerman, good young pitchers drop from the top to the bottom of the rotation.
this team is coming up and if they don’t beat the phillies this year they will for the next 4 or 5.

  34. DONNYBROOK March 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm

    - Ys -
With the exception of Jackson, I agree. Jackson will blow up a H2H Fantasy Teams WHIP in nothing flat.

  35. Irreverent Discourse March 20th, 2012 at 3:17 pm

did i say strasburg wasn’t an upgrade?

ZimmermaNN is a PITCHER, and he’s not likely going to be as good as he was last year.

They don’t have to beat the Phillies, even without Utley and Howard for the full season they couldn’t beat the Phillies… no one here is even talking about that… and if you are you’re crazy. :)

They are sniffing the wildcard at best this year. That would be a 10 game improvement over last season. They are not 100 runs better than last year, so how are they making up this 10 game gap?

  36. GreenBeret7 March 20th, 2012 at 3:21 pm

•There was a split between upper management and the field staff over whether to sign Johnny Damon or Raul Ibanez, Tom Verducci of SI.com writes. Damon told the Yankees he would play for whatever they were offering Ibanez, but it wasn’t enough.
•Agent Scott Boras says Damon has received nibbles, but no offers. “We have heard from teams who say ‘We have interest in the guy but we want to see what our players are going to do,’” Boras said.

Years like this you will learn what the depth of a 25-man roster does for a good team like the Phillies. Just because the Nats trimmed some fat around the edges doesn’t make the other half of their garbage roster better.

  59. J. Alfred Prufrock March 20th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

If he can just be healthy for a change, the Nats could have Christian Garcia in their future.

  61. NYYROC March 20th, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Andy’s back throwing BPs. Good for him. But if a soon to be 40 year old Petitte, who hasn’t pitched in over a year and who spent a good portion of the 2nd half of 2010 on the DL can outpitch 3 talented young guys in Nova, Pineda and Hughes I’d be surprised.

Ernie Harwell wrote quite a number of songs, not all related to baseball (Move Over Babe, Here Come’s Henry). He wrote 66 songs. He said his claim to fame was that he had more no hitters than Nolan Ryan.

  79. Ys Guy March 20th, 2012 at 4:22 pm

i will say that i have heard that larussa really mellowed in his later years managing and had actually become much nicer and more accomodating.

i had kind of the same start covering mizzou basketball with norm stewart, he was particularly mean to me when i asked pointed questions in the beginning, but later came to kinda like me. we had kind of a sparring but friendly relationship by the time i left i could crack him up sometims, which was pretty hard to do. and then he remembered me very nicely several years later when i was out visiting.

  80. MG March 20th, 2012 at 4:24 pm

I had an interesting afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium today in Sarasota sitting 2 rows directly behind home plate watching Doc Halladay go 6 innings against the O’s.

He is just unbelievable to watch on the mound, it’s like batters basically have no chance most of the time.

He moves the ball in and out with a precision rarely seen-maybe Greg Maddux in his prime or Warren Spahn, that’s about it. Ruiz was behind the plate and barely had to move his glove on most of the pitches.

He still can throw in the low 90′s but everything moves, couple that with the command and it’s like watching a surgeon, you just can’t fully appreciate it until you watch from up close and personal.

In his last inning, he threw Robert Andino two breaking pitches that were swings and misses, I turned to my buddy and said, ‘the next pitch could be 3 feet out of the zone and Andino will swing-sure enough, he waved at the next pitch (in the zone) and missed it by a foot.

In other news, Nick Johnson set a new career record today-he played 6 innings as the DH and didn’t get hurt badly enough to go on the DL :)

Doc is my favorite pitcher to watch right now easily (when he’s not pitching against the Yanks)….he scissor effects hitters as good as anyone ever has……I was a huge Maddux fan and watched him pitch every game back in the 90s….when you consider the strike zone and everything I think Doc is better…..

How do you guys catch him trolling?! IP trace? I want to be on that detective team because I bet we’re only scratching the surface of what blogs Pete trolls.

IP match from his personal emails he so enjoyed sending everyone.

    ——————————————————————————————-

Sorry, I’m not Pete Abraham. If Pete sent those emails from a Gmail his IP is untraceable. And who’s to say he’s not posting from a different IP if he is indeed trolling blogs.

Stop with the IP tracing BS as no one’s exact location from an IP can be found save by law enforcement maybe.

‘Pretty sad you people are so concerned with what Pete Abraham a former Lohud blogger has to say in 2012 you think he’s “trolling”.

Maybe you should ignore and not reply to posts you don’t like hmmm?

no im not a sports reporter. i’ll tell you the story that i never really tell anyone.

i moved out to columbia to get away from some crap (nothing legal i mean), hung at my sister’s in columbia, met a girl moved in with her you know the deal when you’re 18..anyway, i got a job at the mizzou hangout The Olde Heidelburg restaurant, and there was this guy who hung out there who was the sports director of the student radio station. we got to talking and he told me he sometimes got press passes to the royals and i wanted in. he didnt know i wasnt a student at mizzou so i tbyold him i was and wanted to join the radio sports staff. nobody ever asked for student id’s back then and he assumed i was a student. so while working at the berg i faked my way into being a sports reporter and later sports director of the student station. i got to sit courtside at mens and women’s basketball games and do radio reports and got press passes to royals games a couple of times a year.

i also go to do play-by play of mizzou baseball for 5 seasons back when dave silvestri was on the team and robin ventura and pete incavilia were in the big 8.
i stopped doing all this when i joined the navy.

it was fun and nobody ever caught on!

    —————-
He was on first base with 2 out in the 7th (I think) and almost didn’t score on a triple to deep center and was noticeably limping around the bases, I guess that is the reason.

  121. Faiaz March 20th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

I know how you feel man, I have been following Montero since I read this from back in 06.

“The right-handed power hitting catcher drew immediate attention from Yankee officials in Spring Training in a two-day tryout where he participated in intrasquad games this past March, more than holding his own against much older competition.

Montero went 3-4 with a double, a single, and a monstrous two-run home run to right centerfield off of Rolando Japa in a short five-inning game in his second game of the tryout. He not only held his own against much older competition, but he drew glazed and impressed looks from all the Yankees’ prospects that day.

“He’s ‘the’ top International free agent this year,” Carlos Rios told PinstripesPlus.com on March 17th. “He can really hit and he plays a prime position.” ”

I was telling my friends about him before he was even on the radar. I really hope he demolishes pitchers… just not ours.

  122. MG March 20th, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Count me among the confused regarding the Montero-Pineda trade.

Given the Yankees knew Andy was thinking about coming back and had already signed Garcia plus had Kuroda in their sights, you have to believe that Montero, with even 300 ABs, helps the Yankees more in 2012 than Pineda.

The only logical answer is that the Yankees don’t hold Montero in the same esteem as many of the posters on LoHud and decided to dump him for the best young pitcher they could find as quickly as possible.

That is their decision to make, of course, we as fans have to live with it.

  123. Faiaz March 20th, 2012 at 5:02 pm

“The only logical answer is that the Yankees don’t hold Montero in the same esteem as many of the posters on LoHud and decided to dump him for the best young pitcher they could find as quickly as possible.”

why eat their own young by being down on them?

i’ll never understand why the yankees were more down on montero than seattle is. seattle coaches expecting him to be an everyday catcher.

i realize that very few people on the blog have any respect for what i see with my eyes, but my eyes see nothing that says montero can’t catch at the mlb level in most game conditions ( you have to understand cervelli can’t catch against a team that runs ).

yes , you’d want to have him teamed up with a strong defensive back up catcher, but montero can catch.

i also realize this is a sore subject, but the yankees were inexplicably down on wang too. this behind the scenes negativity towards someone who should he highly respected but isn’t is just weird.

cashman didn’t love wang and he didn’t love montero. he got his way, but is that really good for the yankees ?

my personal opinion is that cashman gets very emotional and biased about being objective. in other words he falls in love with his objectivity .

or another way of saying it is , once he things he’s right about being objective, he’s no longer objective.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

In this grand scheme of things you secure a B- with regard to effort and hard work. Where you actually confused me personally was in your specifics. You know, it is said, details make or break the argument.. And it could not be much more correct at this point. Having said that, permit me inform you just what exactly did deliver the results. Your article (parts of it) can be pretty persuasive and this is probably the reason why I am making an effort in order to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that.
