Wednesday notes: Hughes’ changeup takes a step forward

Phil Hughes isn’t breaking new ground when he talks about keeping it simple. He talks about not thinking too much about the big picture, controling the things he can control, and taking everything one step at a time. It’s cliche, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

So what was today’s step?

“Probably the changeup,” he said. “I really hadn’t gotten a chance to throw as many changeups as I want. It seems like a lot of quick swings this spring so far, and you don’t necessarily get to have those drawn-out counts. I seemed to have a few of those today where I could really incorporate my changeup. I threw some 3-2 changeups and things like that. If I really think about the one thing that I really took a step forward with today, it was probably the changeup.”

Hughes went to his changeup for two of his three strikeouts, including his strikeout of Matt Joyce two innings after Joyce had homered on a first-pitch cutter. Hughes guessed that he went to the changeup 15 times today.

“It was very good,” Russell Martin said. “He wasn’t as consistent early on with it, but as the game went along it was getting better and better. He got in some crucial situations and he made some good pitches. … I think he’s just getting confidence the more he throws it.”

We could all go back several years to read several articles about the development of Hughes’ changeup, and we could look at any number of Michael Pineda stories written this spring to read about the importance of that pitch for a starting pitcher. Ultimately, for Hughes, the development of the changeup isn’t anything new, it’s just the latest in a series of steps this spring.

“It seems like (last spring) was so long ago, to think back on how I was feeling,” he said. “I know that (the ball’s) coming out better than it was. For me that’s kind of one building block of what I need to do. The changeup needs to come along and the cutter and everything else, but physically I feel better.”

• Obviously Joe Girardi was in Port Charlotte and not in Tampa, but he said reports were positive about Derek Jeter getting through today’s scheduled workout. THe plan is still to have Jeter go through one more full workout tomorrow and then play Friday.

• Girardi is not planning to watch CC Sabathia pitch at the minor league complex tomorrow. There’s really nothing he needs to see there. He said he’s pretty sure Sabathia’s going to make the team. “I think he might even start Opening Day,” Girardi said.

• Chris Dickerson made a nice throw from right field that should have been enough to get Carlos Pena out at third, but the ball got to the bag on a short hop and Alex Rodriguez didn’t really have a chance to make the play. It went down as an error on Dickerson because a runner advanced, but it was really a nice throw.

• Another day, another impressive performance by Justin Maxwell. Today he was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and the go-ahead double in the ninth inning. He’s hitting .435 this spring. Still not sure the Yankees will find a spot for him on the roster (unless this Swisher injury is worse than expected).

• Speaking of impressive, Clay Rapada pitched another hitless inning, this time with two strikeouts. He’s been awfully good this spring, especially against lefties. He struck out two lefties today, and they were pretty good lefties: Luke Scott and Carlos Pena. Those would be exactly the kind of guys Rapada would have to face in the regular season.

• Cesar Cabral also looked pretty good today. “After he gives up the double and the balk, he settled down nicely to get a couple strikeouts and get out of the inning,” Girardi siad. “That was good stuff.”

• No real surprise that Matt Joyce homered off Hughes today. Joyce is a career .400/.500/1.100 hitter against Hughes. “He needs to get traded to the National League or something so I don’t see him as much,” Hughes said. “I’d rather get those out of the way now.”

• Someone asked Hughes whether he’d be happy to have a roster spot locked up and defined year after year. “That would be nice,” he said. “I’ll take a 10-year contract, too.”

knicks still putting out the effort on d tonight! and stat continues to look like he’s gettting stronger and stronger every game.

if the knicks want to avoid finishing in the 7/8 spot and getting wiped out in the first round, they really need this game.

    Erik Boland ? @eboland11

Heard snag in Tebow trade came when Jets hierarchy finally got around to watching film of Tebow playing QB. But seriously, folks…

If he continues to pitch well, the talk of trading Hughes should stop (unless they are offered like Justin Upton, which isn’t happening, so…)

    ron March 21st, 2012 at 6:19 pm
I just can’t see hughes getting yanked,if he is doing well.
I think nova get’s traded or sen’t to AAA before that happens.?If nova slips, even a little, with our plethora of pitching, that would be the logical move.

    Jerkface March 21st, 2012 at 6:28 pm
I didn’t know that, good point….So that leaves Pineda and Nova as potential options…Which one of the two do you see the Yankees sending down?

    Nova.

    MG March 21st, 2012 at 6:51 pm
couple the maturity with his generally good command and fastball and you have a guy ready to blossom as a front line starter (barring injuries, of course).

    MG March 21st, 2012 at 6:53 pm
after watching Doc Halladay up close yesterday just dominate the ‘A’ lineup of the O’s with a fastball that never topped 91 you see how important command and pitch selection is to a big league starter.
Phil already knows how to locate his fastball consistently

    Pat M. March 21st, 2012 at 6:59 pm
Luis…….He’ll win 200 games in his career

    ron March 21st, 2012 at 7:02 pm
I see nova being sent down.

    *********************************************

I see Hughes as the odd man out because he has 2 years on his contract. Why would they tinker with Nova?

  6. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2012 at 7:59 pm

    Health…The Final Frontier

This is the Voyage of the pitcher Phil Hughes. His 6 year mission: To explore strange new mounds, to seek out new pitches like the curve and the change, to boldly go where no other member of generation trey has gone before!

Vmmmm mmmmm, mmmm mmm mmm mmmm mmmmmmm…..

  7. LockDown March 21st, 2012 at 8:00 pm

    WoodSanity :P

  8. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:02 pm

hey lockdown, i go the patent on that…. :)

  9. luis March 21st, 2012 at 8:07 pm

    Bret,

the only way to send down Hughes is out of ST. If not, he can block the option to triple A. Nova and Pineda can’t do that, because they don’t have 5 years of service in the ML. If you send him down in ST or to the BP you destroy any potential trade value. Besides, he is pitching lights out, there is no objective reason to do so.

  10. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    Luis,

They won’t call up Pettitte until they have multiple strong offers for Hughes. If he is so great and the next Doc Halladay as MG implied, then there should be no absence of offers, right? And why would you call up Pettitte prematurely and force a crunch on Hughes? They have a timetable worked out.

  11. LockDown March 21st, 2012 at 8:12 pm

    Ys G – That’s probably were I stole it from. :)

  12. LGY March 21st, 2012 at 8:12 pm

    STAT is back.

  13. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:13 pm

    amar’e is HOT tonight!

  14. Jerkface March 21st, 2012 at 8:13 pm

I see Hughes as the odd man out because he has 2 years on his contract. Why would they tinker with Nova?

Because they can safely option Nova and it will push back his free agency and arbitration. They cannot safely option Hughes and he is in a ‘use it or lose it’ area right now.

  15. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 8:13 pm

I feel the only thing Hughes can do by pitching well is boost his trade value for a pitching starved team (likely in the NL). He probably has one month. I just don’t see him being set up with a leash long enough to protect his future on the Yankees. One month is what they’ll give him (and Pettitte) and best offer wins. If he’s great (which he is, right?), there should be some amazing offers. Who knows maybe the Angels will offer Albert Pujols for him, right?

  16. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Phil Hughes finally puts it together again and right away they’re going to trade him?

Yanks don’t even really have that much leverage. They kind of have to trade somebody. But why would they trade Hughes? this is what they’ve been waiting for all these seasons.

They’re going to trade Garcia. He’s got no future on the team at all.

  17. luis March 21st, 2012 at 8:20 pm

    Bret,

Perhaps, but i think that if a trade is made, it will be after the season or at the trade deadline at the earliest…There is going to be a crunch if and when Pettite is ready ( I think he will). So when that happens, Nova is probably going down, because he has options and he has 4 years of control left.

Strictly talking about a potential trade of either Nova or Hughes, it is probably going to be Hughes because of the years of control and Nova is going to be cheaper for that set goal of getting under 189 mil by 2014. Unless, he becomes so good, that even if he is more expensive, he compensates that with elite production ( which is probable by the results he has been showing ). JMHO

  18. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:20 pm

garcia goes to the met’s for some minor prospect who you’ll never hear of. garcia’s happy b/c he doesnt have to move and goes right into the rotation and the mets get some cred with thier fans for spending a few bucks now that the madoff thing is off their backs

  19. stuckey March 21st, 2012 at 8:21 pm

    I thought Stat was done?

    Oh wait, another forum. Sorry.

    Here Jeter is done.

  20. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 8:22 pm

They can stick Garcia in the pen. They did it last year.

Nova is coming off a 16 win rookie season. Why toy with him? Because the offers for Hughes are weak? If he’s so great, the offers should be strong, right?

  21. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2012 at 8:22 pm

    Jeters only being monitored.

  22. luis March 21st, 2012 at 8:24 pm

They’re going to trade Garcia. He’s got no future on the team at all.

That’s a given, but i don’t think they are going to use either Nova or Hughes in the long man role

  23. stuckey March 21st, 2012 at 8:24 pm

    Bronx,

    Nah, there were some done’s.

But David Ortiz holds the record for being done two different times!

  24. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:24 pm

the boomer and carton hockey highlights lasted longer than the ranger’s highlights…

…must not have been any blood in the ranger’s highlights…

  25. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Hughes has been the best story out of ST, by far, imo.

  26. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2012 at 8:29 pm

Garcia has come out of the pen twice in his career and yeah one of those times was in the first week of last season. But they didn’t stick him in the pen.

He takes forever to warm up. Maybe they will put him there but it’s a terrible idea.

  27. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Hughes would be an even better story if he can go 4-0 in April and boost his trade value closer to true value.

  28. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 8:33 pm

Isn’t there a treatment for tradeaholics yet?

  29. LGY March 21st, 2012 at 8:33 pm

The Knicks free throw shooting may be a big problem in the playoffs. Don’t know how they’ve fallen so far in that area.

  34. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 8:36 pm

Didn’t John Wooden or some legendary coach have his players shoot like 100 FT after every practice? Might be something to consider.

  35. BryanV21 March 21st, 2012 at 8:37 pm

I agree with Jeers. I don’t think Garcia will be successful out of the bullpen, but I’d rather see Hughes in the rotation. I guess the sooner the Yankees can deal Garcia the better. I wonder if they can package him with a younger pitcher and young position player for a future Swisher replacement. Otherwise, what do they go after in return?

  36. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:39 pm

you try that wooden trick now and the kids would all have thier aau coaches on the cel arranging a transfer in about a minute…

  37. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 8:43 pm

  38. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 8:44 pm

    luis

What was the last trade you proposed?

  39. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2012 at 8:44 pm

They’re going to get some moderate salary relief but they could also get something halfway decent in return. The yanks won’t be looking to add payroll but they might just be thinking about a veteran lefty bat if Ibanez doesn’t show any signs of life.

Freddy’s a good value at 4MM and whoevers trading for him would definitely be in some dire straits of their own.

  40. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:46 pm

i disagree, i dont think freddy brings you anything much of value in return. what you get is you don’t have to pay him $4M, imo.

  41. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:47 pm

knicks cough up the lead…they really need this game if they want to do anything this PS…

  42. LGY March 21st, 2012 at 8:48 pm

The Knicks can’t score and Novak is glued to the bench all night? Now Baron is in the game?

    WTF is Woodson doing?

  43. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:49 pm

if carpenter’s back problems linger, the cards might give you something of value for freddy, but don’t get your hopes up.

  44. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 8:50 pm

As soon as they can trade both Hughes and Garcia within the next month or so, they will be able to call up Pettitte. If it takes two months to trade both, then they can wait on calling up Pettitte. But I don’t see them having to wait a very long time to field a strong offer for their spare starters. Hughes has value and so does Garcia.

  45. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:51 pm

novak give you nothing on d. when the going gets tight, woodson goes D. im good with that.

  46. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:52 pm

then what happens if old man pettitte breaks down? i dont see them trading 2 starters.

  47. BryanV21 March 21st, 2012 at 8:53 pm

“if carpenter’s back problems linger, the cards might give you something of value for freddy, but don’t get your hopes up.”

I was looking at Jon Jay and Allen Craig earlier, as Craig is listed as their 4th OFer and wouldn’t be a bad starter. They are both under team control through 2016, hit for good average, and play solid to good defense.

With Gardner, who’s not a killer with the bat, already in the OF though I’m not so sure.

  48. luis March 21st, 2012 at 8:53 pm

    Rich,

I was just imagining being a tradeaholic at a tradeaholics anonimous meeting…It was joke.

  49. BryanV21 March 21st, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Leaning on Pettitte to fill a rotation spot would be a big mistake. They should make sure one of the AAA guys can fill a spot before thinking of dealing any starter depth.

  50. luis March 21st, 2012 at 8:55 pm

For the record: I don’t think i have ever propose a trade here or elsewhere.

  51. GreenBeret7 March 21st, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 8:52 pm
then what happens if old man pettitte breaks down? i dont see them trading 2 starters.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

No team, especially in the AL East and fighting for a title would trade 3 starting pitchers in the same season.

  52. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 8:56 pm

If Pettitte breaks down then the 5th starter role is filled by Mitchell, Phelps, Warren, Banuelos and Betances. And if the Yankees while monitoring Pettitte’s progress in the minors determine he’s a break-down candidate then they might hold onto Garcia by stashing Freddy in the pen rather than trading him. Hughes is the guy who has nowhere to go. He can’t pitch his way onto this team but I bet he can boost his trade value.

::: Pineda wen’t from 47.1 innings in 2009 to 139.1 innings in 2010.A very big increase.

Then 170 something innings in 2011,wich was his yearly highest total.
So almost a 100 innings increase from 2009 to 2010.

Going from 139.1 to 170 or so innings is fine.
It is the almost 100 innings increase in 2010 that is insane.

No wonder why he might be a little tired. ::::

Just catching up and I skimmed through so, sorry if this was already addressed…

Pineda pitched 138 innings in 2008 and then was injured during the 2009 season.
So, while the jump from 47 in 2009 to 139 in 2010 seems like a lot at first blush, it’s not like he went straight from 47 to 139 – he had pitched to that level of innings previously.

M’s game schedule going dark for a couple of days while they travel to Japan.
Guess I’ll have to live vicariously ;)

“Which happens first? Hughes trade or Nova optioned to AAA?”

Hughes is traded. I don’t see Nova going to AAA ever again, unless it’s on a rehab assignment. Whether that’s with the Yankees or anybody else.

  60. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 9:01 pm

i love andy pettitte, but lets face facts, we have no idea if the soon-to-be 40 y/o can pitch at this point. and even less certain is whether he can hold up and not get injured. trading anyone now to make room for him 6 weeks for now is foolish. a pulled hammy a back strain anything like that could move him back a month or more or end his career (again)

realisitcly at this point, andy doesn’t exsist, you go forward as if he wasnt even there. if and when he shows up ready to pitch, you make some decisions but even then you move gingerly.

i hope andy is great, but you can’t count on that yet. as i’ve said a couple of times, at this point its no more than 50/50 that he starts 4 games by the asb.

  61. mick March 21st, 2012 at 9:02 pm

And Hughes had an impressive 18-win season. And is getting paid more than Nova.

I’m not saying Hughes won’t get traded because it’s a possibility.

But my guess is that Phil goes into the rotation and has a good season. Like a 2nd breakout season.

  68. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 9:07 pm

trading anyone now to make room for him 6 weeks for now is foolish.

    *************

For the record, I’m not advocating trading Hughes right now before they 1) Monitor Pettitte’s health, strength, stamina, progress in the minors 2) Take a long hard look at the 5 arms on the AAA staff and determine how many are capable of filling the 5th spot should Pettitte get injured 3) Stash Garcia in the pen as insurance while Hughes shines in the 5th spot, Pettitte shakes of the rust and Cashman works the phone lines for Hughes.

bret – if hughes is traded, then what is your starting rotation for next year, after kuroda, garcia, and andy are gone? cc, nova, pineda,……..

    ***********

CC, Nova, Pineda, Pettitte, Banuelos, Betances.

If not Pettitte then some other year-to-year guy similar to Kuroda, Garcia or Pettitte.

    Hamels.

    Cain.

  84. Nilsson March 21st, 2012 at 9:39 pm

Lin is nailing the free throws.

  85. m March 21st, 2012 at 9:39 pm

Um. At the end of the first quarter Denver is leading Detroit 40-18.

  86. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Hughes is not necessary considering the Yankees have so many candidates to fill the final two spots long term.

They have Betances, Banuelos, 3 other minor league arms, possibly Pettitte and free agents like Hamels or Cain or Greinke.

The staff is not going to fall apart if Cashman trades Hughes for an OF

  87. luis March 21st, 2012 at 9:43 pm

    Bret,

If they are serious about going below the 189mil mark, they can’t afford either Cain or Hamels. So that leaves either Kuroda or Pettitte. That’s why i say that if there is a trade of Hughes, it’s going to be next off season, so they can gauge what they have in Betances and Banuelos.

  88. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 9:43 pm

wow, what happened there?!? they had the time to foul and win the game but they stood around and blew it!

nice quarter by lin, nice win by the knickerbockers!

  91. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2012 at 9:45 pm

That’s also the reason why trading away Hughes is so unlikely but whatever……

  92. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 9:45 pm

There are less streaks, at least losing ones, when you commit to defense.

No, they traded for Pineda because he’s part of the solution of fortifying the staff long term. Hamels or Cain is worth a long term contract as well regardless of the presence or absence of Michael Pineda.

  101. blake March 21st, 2012 at 9:52 pm

  102. Joe from Long Island March 21st, 2012 at 9:52 pm

bret – ah, just get a hamels or cain from the shelf in the market….. ;)

my point would be….. they saw with halladay and lee that getting a stud pitcher isn’t so easy…. i think we got spoiled by cash signing cc, fooled into thinking that this was easy.

i wouldn’t be shocked if they did trade hughes, for the right deal. i just don’t think that’s the current plan (emphasis on the “think”). i think they’ll try to hold onto both phil and nova, and see what their options are and what have to do when andy is ready.

cc, pineda, nova, hughes, and whomever of the five guys at aaa are remaining and ready.

Why are two more years of Hughes essential?

  109. m March 21st, 2012 at 9:58 pm

I can understand the need or desire to trade Hughes away before he starts costing you. But if he’s going to return to FH2010 level the biggest return will be himin the Yankee rotation. And if he’s turned the corner, then he should be part of the Yankees longterm plan. You can’t be thinking about anyone from the minors being a long-term solution until they show they can do it. They have to shed the prospect status first.

  113. blake March 21st, 2012 at 10:02 pm

“And if he’s turned the corner, then he should be part of the Yankees longterm plan.”

the only issue is that if he has turned the corner and starts to fullfill his potential….then he’s going to cost 10-15 million dollars as a FA…..and I don’t think they’ll be able to fit that into the budget if they are serious about reducing the payroll…..

it’s unfortunate because it’s not really the Yankee way to let good players go because of money….but they may very well have to do just that in some cases moving forward if they want to operate efficiently and stay under 189 million (Nick Swisher). ….either way…the best thing Hughes can do for himself and for the Yankees is to pitch well…the rest will work itself out whether he stays or goes.

    ***************

Jesus Montero hit .328 with the Yankees and grabbed a playoff hit as well. He played at a high level and still got traded. And there were 6 years of control on him compared to only 2 for Hughes. Hughes could be the best pitcher in baseball through April and still get traded.

  115. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 10:03 pm

In order to sign Hamels or Cain, Swisher and Martin have to go. That has nothing to do with Hughes.

  116. GreenBeret7 March 21st, 2012 at 10:04 pm

There is nothing close to a rumor on the trading block that better at every position than what NYYs have. They are not trading two or three or four starting pitchers for anything available.

  117. J. Alfred Prufrock March 21st, 2012 at 10:04 pm

Some individuals here who prioritize pitching uber all are remarkably cavalier about getting rid of one who just may be ready to deliver on his upside.

Have you watched the guy pitch this spring??

  118. comet March 21st, 2012 at 10:05 pm

Joe you are right. If Hughes is effective this year it would be crazy to trade him unless the offer was overwhelming. There is next year and the two after that to think about. The Yankees will not be free spenders until they disgorge the huge contracts of ARod, Tex and Jeter. By 2014 Mo is likely retired . When those contracts all done, you free up close to $100 million.

  119. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 10:05 pm

In 2014, Hughes could make just as much as Martin (10) and possibly as much as Swisher (15). So he’s not part of that group, why exactly? Because you don’t want him to be so you separate him out?

  120. blake March 21st, 2012 at 10:06 pm

“Hughes could be the best pitcher in baseball through April and still get traded.”

I don’t think it’s a certainty at all that he will be traded…..I think if folks want to make offers then Cashman will listen….but if he’s pitching great then they will likely keep him unless somebody really make an overwhelming offer and try to win the WS. They don’t have to trade anybody because they have guys with options…..but I would expect them to see what the offers are for both Hughes and Nova and see if any of them make sense for their needs.

  121. Ys Guy March 21st, 2012 at 10:06 pm

but…we dont need him. especially at $20+M per year. i LOVE the guy but let him go somewhere else or stay with the soon to be decrpid phils

we got cc, pineda, nova, hughes, Big Dellin, manny B and whomever else we need next year.

we’re all set, thanks for your interest cole and good luck! :)

There is this little obstacle…….189 mil payroll limit they have express they want to meet by 2014, unfortunately like Blake says, there are going to be tough choices ahead to shed payroll to meet the cap.

  129. Dionysius Thelxinoe March 21st, 2012 at 10:10 pm

Root for the Knicks all you want, maybe they’ll make a show of it from here on out.

But the truth of the matter is, from my pov, they will never ever win with this owner.

He is the root of all their problems, period, much in the same fashion as Jerry Jones in Dallas, only worse.

Dolan has turned a bedrock NBA franchise with a proud history into a joke.

  130. blake March 21st, 2012 at 10:10 pm

I think if the Yanks have any shot to get under that 189 threshold they will need their rotation and pretty much entire pitching staff to be pretty cheap aside from Sabathia…..if they decide they want to committ to Hughes longterm at some point this season then they should talk extension with him and see if something affordable can be agreed upon…..having Cano, Granderson, and Hughes all as free agents that winter would make things very difficult as far as planning.

  131. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 10:10 pm

You want to make up goofy trade proposals? Figure out a way to get a young hitter of Montero’s caliber.

  132. GreenBeret7 March 21st, 2012 at 10:11 pm

No, they traded for Pineda because he’s part of the solution of fortifying the staff long term. Hamels or Cain is worth a long term contract as well regardless of the presence or absence of Michael Pineda.

    ————————–

There is no way they are adding a 100MM + pitcher with the 189MM salary cap so close in sight, the treasure trove of young talented arms they have, all the expiring contracts and the likely 2 year expiration date on the left side of the infield.

    Capiche ?

lets say they’d have to pay him 13 million per to keep him….that’s going to make it even more difficult to sign Cano and fill out the rest of the club and stay under the cap….they’d probably have to let Granderson go to do it…..it’s going to be really tight and I don’t think they can keep all three of those guys and do it.

People don’t want him dealt and so their brains can’t process any scenario that involves Hughes being traded. It’s the same pattern, thus the precedent is valid. Hughes performance has no bearing on his job security on the Yankees…same deal with Montero before him. Watch.

what a great win for the Knicks tonight when they couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn the last 3 quarters.

this is a game they never would have won under D’Antoni because the Sixers were hitting 3′s and they would have had many more wide open looks.

Props to STAT who really played a good game and for Jeremy Lin, who has no fear in the paint and no fear of taking important shots.

With 2 more very winnable games this weekend before the schedule gets tough, they should be over .500 by the end of the weekend.

So I don’t say “Hughes is not getting traded”. I soften my stance by saying I don’t think he’ll be traded.

  145. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 10:17 pm

“Well wrap your head around it.”

Wrap your head around the trades for Jeff Weaver, Kevin Brown, Javy Vazquez 2x because they all worked out so well.

  146. blake March 21st, 2012 at 10:18 pm

    2014.

    arod : 27.5
    Tex: 23
    Sabathia: 23
    Jeter: 8
    Cano: 22
    Granderson: 15
    Hughes: 13

That’s a rough guess there if they kept all 3 of those guys…..that’s 132 million dollars in 7 players…..they’d have to fill out 33 rosters spots and all the bonus jazz with around 55 million dollars….which is doable of course but it wouldn’t be easy at all and you’d have to worry about the quality you’re filling out the rest of the roster with.

You are an exception and I remember you being open minded about Montero being dealt even after he raked in MLB. But the general pattern here is the brain of most fans is shut down to the possibility of trading Hughes because people want him to see him succeed with the Yankees after so many years of promise. I think he’s done. They no what they have. No surprises.

    And your point?

  151. blake March 21st, 2012 at 10:21 pm

by 2014 Gardner will be in his final year of arbitration making good money….Pineda will probably be making good money….Robertson will be an Arb 3 and maybe the closer….they’ll have to have signed a RFer…a catcher….either a DH or a 3rd baseman….etc…..

  152. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2012 at 10:22 pm

    “And your point?”

That…he can cite the Montero for Pineda trade as some type of wonderful example of how a shrewd GM builds a team around pitching, when the available evidence of Cashman’s record of trading for supposedly high end starting pitching is less than stellar.

  153. m March 21st, 2012 at 10:22 pm

    Reading up on Tebow/Jets.

Per the contract, the Jets were supposed to pay back the Denver for the advanced salaries.

  154. J. Alfred Prufrock March 21st, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Yes, luis, since that game was not televised, a Mariners’ blog writer posted a picture of where the ball left the park, with a circle around the spot it landed, right over the 385 sign.

That doesn’t mean Cashman should stop because of prior failed trades. Also, you’re not being fair to Cashman when you mention Jeff Weaver and Kevin Brown as bad trades when they were traded for each other with the Yankees getting significant salary relief by acquiring Brown for Weaver.

Montero they were trying to trade for 2 seasons. Maybe longer.

Hughes has had more Yankee lives than Billy Martin. They love him. And if he’s really about to get his act together? They’ll really love him.

They’ll probably more likely to extend him than to trade him.

“That doesn’t mean Cashman should stop because of prior failed trades.”

We have a difference of opinion on that.

“Also, you’re not being fair to Cashman when you mention Jeff Weaver and Kevin Brown as bad trades when they were traded for each other with the Yankees getting significant salary relief by acquiring Brown for Weaver.”

How much better does that make his record? Did that move cover the hole or make it deeper?

Let’s be honest. The CC signing has saved his butt, which I give him credit for.

But to this point, the only starter he has developed is Nova, so it’s not like he has offset his poor trade record with in-house solutions.

That’s why Hughes’ success is so important to both the team’s present and future and Cashman’s record as a GM.

Yet some people want to trade him just as he may be finding himself, and the evidence cited is…Montero was traded.

by 2014 Gardner will be in his final year of arbitration making good money….Pineda will probably be making good money….Robertson will be an Arb 3 and maybe the closer….they’ll have to have signed a RFer…a catcher….either a DH or a 3rd baseman….etc…..

    =============================

Yup, the thing holding the Yankees up are those big long term contracts….There is no way around them, but i expect them to start expending after those contracts are gone.

  168. Bret The Hitman March 21st, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Yes Stuckey, I have envisioned a scenario where Nova gets traded for an OF. Nova for Heyward. But then I figure the Braves wouldn’t do that so the Yankees will have to trade Hughes for an OF and if they can’t…sign Melky Cabrera and fill another need with Hughes to make room for Pettitte.

The Yankees have control of Hughes for 2 more years.

Could Andy Pettitte pitch those same to years in his place?

    Can you fathom that?

  171. blake March 21st, 2012 at 10:32 pm

If Hughes starts to look like what we thought he was going to be then I’d love to keep him long term…..but given the finances and given the current depth they have in pitching and lack of position players in the upper levels of the minors….I’m not sure that keeping him would actually be best for the balance of the organization IF they could acquire good offense for him at some point….

I’m not saying they should get rid of Hughes…..I like him and he looks great this spring…..I’m saying that if they are going operate on a budget then they need to think about this stuff and use their assets in the way that best balances the team and consider all options to do so.

There may be a dilemma between maintaining balance and keeping quality. I would opt for quality and let balance work itself out over time.

That’s why I think Swisher and Martin have to go Not nearly enough quality.

If Hughes isn’t what the indications are he might finally be, he will go too. If it’s real, he should stay, unless they get an incredible young SS, 3B, OF, C.

“Lost” came on and said Girardi got to make the call on Damin/Ibanez. He said the only thing he could figure is that it’s because Girardi has a huge ego.

I know. It didn’t make sense in his original post either. Sounded like he had inside info, but it was basically a long anti-Girardi rant.

  200. J. Alfred Prufrock March 21st, 2012 at 11:00 pm

luis, I was not happy with the treatment of Posada in his last season with the Yankees, from both upstairs and in the dugout. I will not understand anytime soon why that manager begrudged Jorge his moment with Mo for that all-time save.

They asked Mo if he wanted Jorge back there and he said, ‘That’s my dream.’ Girardi/Cashman knew that the catcher’s name would be forever linked with Rivera’s in that moment, and they begrudged him that; he earned sharing that with Rivera – not Russell bleepin’ “Munson.”

If that wasn’t bad enough – you know he’s the catalyst behind Montero’s departure. I don’t care what his apologists say in here.

I wonder: is Pena was manager, would he have made more of an effort to work with Jesus behind the plate, the way the Mariners are right now?

On Posada, he should have cached 603, that was petty from them. Maybe there was bad blood after the incident of the demotion, but they should have give in to Mo’s wishes.

On Pena and Montero: I have always said that the kid is going to catch…He won’t be Bench or Fisk or Munson, but his bat was going to make up for any shortcomings his D would have. They never gave him the chance, and i do think that he had something to do with that as well…But i think it was more of a FO opinion as a whole rather than Girardi’s .

Why trade Hughes when Garcia, Kuroda, and possibly Pettitte won’t be back next season? We can’t say we have young starters who can come up. Because they might struggle up here. Then what? You’re looking to trade those guys. Or we sign a free agent pitcher and one of those young pitchers gets sent to the bullpen. Then we’ll have to worry about innings limit with that pitcher. Hughes should be fine this year barring injuries. He is a possible #2 or #3 starter. And will pitch like a #1 at times. We still don’t know if Pineda will work out or if Nova will have a sophomore jinx.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
