Yankees pregame (with revised lineup)

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Apr 17, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Brian Heyman here again tonight for Chad. Mark Teixeira has been scratched due to flu-like symptoms.

Here’s the revised lineup:

1. Derek Jeter DH

2. Nick Swisher 1B

3. Robinson Cano 2B

4. Alex Rodriguez 3B

5. Andruw Jones RF

6. Curtis Granderson CF

7. Eduardo Nunez SS

8. Brett Gardner LF

9. Chris Stewart C

On the subject of starting pitchers, Andy Pettitte is down for about 65 pitches Friday when he starts again for Single-A Tampa, this time at Daytona.

And Michael Pineda is down for another bullpen session within the next few days, according to Joe Girardi. The Yankees hope he can start pitching in games after that. …

The Yankees have just two quality starts out of 10 so far, none from tonight’s starter against the Twins, CC Sabathia.

“To me, command has probably been the biggest issue,” Girardi said, speaking about the five starters in general. “Not to where we’ve walked a lot of people, but where we’ve gotten too much of the plate.”

Sabathia allowed nine earned runs over 12 innings in his first two starts, both no-decisions. The lefty is usually better when the weather is warmer.

“CC is a guy who has a really good changeup,” Girardi said. “A changeup is a feeling pitch. Obviously the warmer it is, the better feeling you’re going to have in your fingers. Some guys just enjoy the weather more. CC is one of those guys that you look at him, he doesn’t mind if it’s 95 degrees and really, really hot. I always dislike those days, but it doesn’t seem to bother him.” …

Hiroki Kuroda, who will start tomorrow night, has one of the two quality starts, his last one in the home opener against the Angels when he tossed eight-plus shutout innings. He had faced the Angels with the Dodgers, but the Rays got him for six runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 in his first outing. Kuroda is still adjusting to life in the AL.

“The biggest challenge is to get to know the hitters,” Kuroda said through interpreter Kenji Nimura.

Russell Martin is familiar with him from their Dodger days.

“Russell really helps me out,” Kuroda said.

The AL has taken the bat out of Kuroda’s hands so far.

“I don’t miss it at all,” he said. …

This is the 61st anniversary of Bob Sheppard’s first major-league game here as the PA announcer. April 17, 1951, marked Mickey Mantle’s first game as well. Mantle went 1 for 4. Two years later on this date, Mantle sent up his 565-foot homer at Griffith Stadium in Washington.

One this date in 1961, Mantle hit his first homer of the season.

Gary Sanchez has no passed balls in eight games as a catcher this year. That seems to show a big defensive turnaround. Plus, his 31 percent throw out rate isn’t bad at all.

On a catching note, who is the possible, affordable and available(who know is excluded)if not Martin next year? Cervelli is hitting under his IQ and what is up with Romine’s rehab.

  4. austinmac April 17th, 2012 at 5:17 pm

    GB,

1961 is the best year ever. Got to see a couple games. I can still see it and recite many of the stats. What a team.

“I think he already started it, because i haven’t seen him around.”

    luis-

if he left because of pineda going to the minors, it was a smart tactical move because now stuckey doesn’t have to lose face when the actual time comes.

i mean , what could be worse than telling me i’m an idiot nonstop and then me winning a bet with him over who would be in the minors first, montero or pineda.

there was a certain amount of luck involved because montero could have gotten hurt too being a catcher and have to do minor league rehab.

i was actually figuring that pineda would implode from the stress and pressure of having so much riding on every start in new york.

just look at the pressure hughes and garcia are under right now. it never stops in new york for yankee players.

pineda could be really good , but he’s going to have to do a lot of maturing to get up to speed for yankee stadium. can he shrug off cheap homers to right the way nova does.

thats going to be his biggest problem i think.

    ==============================

Yup, I wasn’t thrilled to see the kid almost crying in his last start. To be honest, i rather see him spend the rest of the season in the minors. I don’t think is going to happen, because the FO will feel the need to save face.

Ideally, i would let him pitch in the minors to get acclimated to the Yankee way and work on the change and get healthy in a pressure free environment. Doing the same they did to Hughes would be borderline criminal, knowing what it already did to him.

What i would do is trade Garcia as soon as Pettitte is ready. Send Hughes to the minors if the FO still has hopes that he can be a SP, if not send to the BP. I would give the chance to Phelps to be the 5th starter. He seems to be ready for the job.

About if he is going to be able to handle things like Nova?….I don’t know yet, i haven’t seen him enough to know. But one thing is for certain, That kind of attitude you either have it or you don’t. You can’t teach mental toughness. Everything else, you can.

  6. Bret The Hitman April 17th, 2012 at 5:24 pm

    Austinmac,

I don’t want Martin back. I’d rather go with Cervelli/Romine or Romine/Cervelli until Gary Sanchez is ready. At this point maybe it makes little sense to give a 3 year deal to Martin because he stinks. And maybe it makes not sense to give Miguel Montero a 4 year deal because Sanchez could be ready before then.

Now that Jeter’s looking at big money in 2014, the budget is blown and it’s hard to get to 189 even if you add just Miguel Montero or solely Melky Cabrera.

NL Teams struggling with starting pitching therefore possible destinations for Hughes and Garcia:

    San Diego

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

I was the best team that I’ve ever seen play. Saw a couple of games in Chicago and a couple in Detroit. Of course, I saw the games those teams played on TV in NY too. The best series was the first series in September against Detroit. Mantle was supposed to be out because he had torn a muscle in his upper arm. He played, but changed bats, going to Bob Cerv’s 38 ouncer to cut down on his swing. naturally, he launched a bomb into the right center bleachers off of Jim Bunning and another off of Gerry Staley to dead right. Saw a homer by Mantle in Chicago and another in Detroit. Maris hit a homer in the Chicago game. One of the games, Maris had a homer, double and triple.

Haven’t seen him this year. Saw him with the Tampa rookie team last year. Pretty swing. Hits to all fields and never saw any real holes in his swing. Putting him in RF is perfect. Good speed and a fine base runner.

  14. luis April 17th, 2012 at 5:57 pm

    Pat M,

Dodgers, Oakland would be good fits for him

  15. Villa Nova-Ya April 17th, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Are we talking about trading Hughes?

  16. luis April 17th, 2012 at 6:07 pm

    I don’t know Villa….But it could be a posibility.

  17. Villa Nova-Ya April 17th, 2012 at 6:10 pm

You know, whatever happens happens. But I feel like we’ve been connected to Hughes for so long, I hope that in the next couple of starts he finds something. Something.

    But, again, whatever happens, happens.

Garcia, I don’t feel as much connection to. He was a good addition, and his experience is certainly a plus in tutoring the young guys.

But the AL East is so ultra-competititve that you can have no dead weight around anymore.

  18. Villa Nova-Ya April 17th, 2012 at 6:11 pm

I’d rather trade Garcia than Hughes, still.

  19. Villa Nova-Ya April 17th, 2012 at 6:16 pm

The Hughes/Joba stuff is a reminder to us all that sometimes life does not work out the way you want it to, or thought it would.

I’m not into the blame game or anything like that. Sometimes things happen and it’s not really anyone’s “fault” per se.

There are so many things in life that we cannot foresee, that no one would ever predict for you. And they happen anyway.

You can do everything right and stuff turns out wrong. Or you can think you were doing the absolute right thing, and still you look back and say, WAS it the right thing? But life doesn’t give you do-overs. And sometimes even the best of intentions, the best of plans, with all the right amount of forethought and research and whatever else, things still turn out topsy turvy.

    Villa,

I tend to agree with your take. The important thing is to learn from the mistakes you make. I do think that in Hughes case he was rushed and in the case of Joba he wasn’t given enough time to proof himself. I do think the FO has two very good examples of how to run things: Nova and Phelps. They have gone under the radar much of the time, so they had their time in the minors. I am not saying that is the same to all pitchers, but it should serve as a guideline.

  24. Villa Nova-Ya April 17th, 2012 at 6:25 pm

    randy l -

I read that. Very interesting, and you coudl see it unfolding the last coupel of years with the extensions being offered and accepted.

Different mindset for htis generation of players, I guess.

So, do the Yankees hop on board the extension train?

  25. luis April 17th, 2012 at 6:28 pm

    Randy,

Good read. It is the undeniable trend in baseball. It is going to be very difficult to find a good player in his prime on the FA market.

    Villa,

Yes, it should be a strategy embraced by the FO.

  26. Villa Nova-Ya April 17th, 2012 at 6:34 pm

    Luis -

The problem is you never get a second chance with the same people. Sure, you can learn generalities from your past mistakes, but you get no do-overs, really.

And each person is so individualized, you can still think you’ve learned and do things a bit differently, and STILL things can go wrong.

In the case of baseball players, the players themselves need to take responsibility, too. there is a mentality that exists even among teenage ballplayers that ends up not being in their own best interests. And to forget that the players do in fact play a part in all the things that happen to them is not a fair way to look at things.

However, we fans are at a disadvantage in being able to apply accurate judgment at all, because we do not know all the facts and circumstances surrounding any of the things that happen.

And that radar that players fly under or shoot over, is as much to do with publications that spout who the new latest and greatest are, and rank them league-wide and within teams.

And there is sometimes no way to really know who is going to take their situations and through whatver they’ve been blessed with change their own realities. Take lemons and make lemonade. Some can, and some can’t and we don’t always know who is who.

Teams like the Yankees have a ton of advisors. No decisions are lightly made. The decision to bring Hughes up in 2007 – you have to look at the situation in context.

With Joba – he was always a risk, from the day they signed him. That’s why they were even able to sign him.

Again, the best intentions even with a wealth of information from the best pr ofessionals available cannot guarantee the results you hope for.

  27. Bronx Jeers April 17th, 2012 at 6:47 pm

From the WSJ article linked above:

“C.J. Wilson, the Angels left-hander who landed a five-year, $77.5 million contract through free agency in December, said the process doesn’t always work out as well as the numbers suggest. He said he has a ball-playing friend who is miserable with his new team after signing as a free agent three years ago. “He told me he’d give the money back to get back on his old team,” Wilson said Friday. ”

    ———————–

No problem Tex. Just say the word and off you go.

  28. luis April 17th, 2012 at 6:48 pm

    Villa,

Very good post. I would only say that i do understand the context in which Hughes was brought up to the team: “Win now, no pitching depth”. At that moment everybody thought that to be the right call. In hindsight, it was the wrong one. He wasn’t ready.

In the case of Joba, i do agree with you that it was a risk, but i still don’t understand why he wasn’t given a chance to be a starter after 09. Hughes 2010 campaign aside, Joba was very good in 09, plus he had already 4 pitches in his arsenal. two of them plus, plus and the other two very good ones.

Nobody good enough to keep us in the race. My argument is directed more against the win at all cost philosophy, i am just using Hughes as an example. Probably with this new CBA they will be forced to develop more and have more patience before bringing the guys up. At least i hope so.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  62. going here August 11th, 2014 at 1:03 pm

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
