Nova remains unbeatable

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Misc on Apr 27, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It seems that nothing can stop Ivan Nova’s win streak. Not wind. Not cold. Not Justin Verlander. And certainly not a parade of baserunners. The young right-hander surrendered 14 of them in 5 1/3 innings tonight and left in line for the loss. But the offense rallied against Justin Verlander and the Tiger bullpen to give the Yankees a 7-6 win tonight at the Stadium.

Alex Rodriguez and Russell Martin each hit home runs. With Rodriguez up and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Avila allowed a passed ball on a 2-0 pitch that allowed Derek Jeter to score the winning run. Jeter had walked and moved to third on a wild pitch on ball four to Curtis Granderson.

The Yanks kept Verlander, the reigning AL Cy Young and MVP, winless in their park. He’s now just 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts here after allowing four earned runs over six innings.

    Angels Release Bobby Abreu

Yanks should pickup Abreau for cheap.. much better option than Ibanez.

    I like that!

I’d take Abreu over Ibanez. Both suck though.

    Good for Girardi.

“I take this stuff seriously. I’ve seen too many times when one game has caused a team a playoff spot.” Talking about bad umpiring.

    Joe G didn’t like West’s smug attitude.

    Bryan Hoch @BryanHoch
The Angels have released Bobby Abreu, whom the Yankees tried to trade A.J. Burnett for this winter.

    ~

told ya awhile back he’d be able to be had for “free” eventually.

The Halos suffered their second straight 9th inning loss tonight (the game day thread has essentially been replaced by a vent thread)

Speaking of 9th inning victories … congrats to the Yanks tonight!

(oh – and, you’re welcome re: the Jays ;) )

    GREAT QUESTION –

Paraphrase: Joe your starting pitching has an ERA over 6. At some point is it going to be hard for the offense to overcome?

I guess the reporters understand the game of baseball.

Can’t believe Justin has never won at Yankee Stadium. CC and them would’ve beaten him in Game 1 last year too if the rain didn’t come.

I second making a move for Bobby. Much better than Raul

  14. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 27th, 2012 at 10:59 pm

Sis – I want the Jays to keep on winning. I like the competitive aspect of the AL East – and also I have a bet with Nick that the Jays will place higher than the Sux! So stay away from those Jays!

Unknown – then all we’ll hear is the whining about how Bobby is afraid of the wall.

    No thanks!

Anyway, I doubt you’re going to see that happen. I loved Abreu but there were too many complaints about his fielding.

  18. 4 NYY April 27th, 2012 at 11:01 pm

The only thing Abreu does better at this stage, is run a little faster. No better in the field and was not hitting, only complaining and is not the clubhouse guy Ibanez is. I’ll stick with Raul for now. But, we’ll see.

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 27th, 2012 at 11:01 pm

mick – people will cry that he won’t get close enough to the wall! Our hitting isn’t doing poorly.

Well gang, troll twins notwithstanding, it was a great game!

Hope the Tigers pitcher is feeling okay about life. Actually he wouldn’t have been in that position had Verlander gotten the job done, so this certainly isn’t all on him.

    Hast manana!

West and CB Bucknor are two of the worst umpires in the game. There are some others like Marty Foster but when I think of the worst West and Bucknor come to mind.

    Funny you should ask…
they were just mentioning Hultzen’s “Pitcher of the Week” award on the post game (Paxton garnered the honor week before last)

“the TRIO” down in Jackson is doing quite well, so far they have combined for…

    67 IP – 2.27 ERA – 1.12 WHIP – 83 K

  34. raymagnetic April 27th, 2012 at 11:11 pm

The Angels need relief pitching. The Yankees need another starter. Dan Haren is having a soso season.
    Haren remaining contract-12: 12.75M, 13:$15.5M club option ($3.5M buyout).
Give the Angels Soriano and his remaining 11M this year and 14M next year and throw in Garcia and call it even!! :)

Anyone who’d want Ibanez over Abreu is on crack. Bobby may be afraid of the wall, but at least he’s capability of catching balls hit his way.

  39. Jeremy April 27th, 2012 at 11:21 pm

I will say that I have no confidence in Garcia on the mound because the guy is done. Either the Yankees slug it out or they lose.

Everybody thinks he’s going to suck tommorrow, I’m not convinced. I say he pitches a good game.

You don’t get prizes for being right after, like, 4 starts……..Freddy will right himself, of that I’m sure.

  46. blake April 27th, 2012 at 11:36 pm

Probably be a slug fest tomorrow ….hope the Yanks bring the lumber.

Wonder if the Abreu move means Trout is heading up soon?

Joe seriously has to stop playing Ibanez in the outfield…..he’s a DH….when is Gardner supposed to be back again?

  47. Yankee Trader April 27th, 2012 at 11:38 pm

Trout I believe was called up when Abreu was released. Now who sits Wells or their CF’er?

  48. jmv April 27th, 2012 at 11:38 pm

The SP has been a disaster (not worried about Nova, he was a BABIP victim tonight) and we are still winning. But still think that Kuroda is gonna be Ok and CC is going to be himself. Good times to come. Andy is coming back

  49. Jeremy April 27th, 2012 at 11:39 pm

Garcia throws slop and hitters hit it hard. Everything has to be near perfect for him to have any chance. Against this Tiger lineup expect a short outing, high pitch count, a lot of hits, and runs.

Maybe after a number of losses Cashman will finally understand that he is done and he shouldn’t be on this team.

  50. jmv April 27th, 2012 at 11:40 pm

    Pat M,
Sshhhh! They are sleeping with their teddy bears

  51. Yankee Trader April 27th, 2012 at 11:42 pm

I hope you are right about Garcia. If the splitter isn’t working and the Tigers are laying off it, I don’t trust the 74-84 mph junk he throws up there. Clearly not the same pitcher he was in the beginning of last year. Every one of his 3 starts have been bad, one worse than the next.

  52. Yankee Trader April 27th, 2012 at 11:43 pm

    Good night all.

  53. austinmac April 27th, 2012 at 11:44 pm

It seems a long time since the last walk off win. I like that AROD and Martin are going the other way. That can only help.

Nova’s line was ugly, but their were many cheap hits and some bad defensive plays. He’ll be okay.

  54. jmv April 27th, 2012 at 11:56 pm

    Over and out. Nite all

  55. Yogi Mantle April 27th, 2012 at 11:58 pm

Good win against a tough pitcher. (Even though I still can’t think of him as a true MVP.)

Nova got hurt by poor play in the field and some lucky hits through the holes. It’s not like the Tiggers are a push over team, even if they are currently on a losing streak. I really don’t like when the Yankees have to face a team that has lost a number of games in a row, especially a good team like the Tiggers are.

Hopefully they will continue the losing streak for a couple more games.

  56. UnKnown April 28th, 2012 at 12:08 am

    Bret you will love this.

    Joe Casale ? @sportsJC16
#Yankees need 4 SP’s. Absent that, it’s an 85 win team. The starting pitching on this team is awful. Can’t spin it any other way.

    Joe Casale ? @sportsJC16
@YankeeSource Team is 2 yrs older, No Damon & Matsui, and they have 1 SP. it’s not 2009 anymore. This team is 6-8 players short.

And lots of people on this blog thought he was some kind of expert guru. Too funny

  57. BD (Boston Dave) April 28th, 2012 at 12:13 am

SJ44 has always overreacted to some things.

He has some good knowledge, but seems like he also has a short fuse sometimes.

He’d still be an asset to the blog if he came back.. but you gotta take this sorta stuff in stride.

  58. BD (Boston Dave) April 28th, 2012 at 12:13 am

Cory Wade has really been great for the Yanks so far. It looked like he might struggle the way he was throwing in ST…

but he has been such a find for hte Yanks since last season. Goes to show you how unscientific creating a bullpen can be.

  59. BD (Boston Dave) April 28th, 2012 at 12:17 am

whether you think the Yanks are in terrible shape or not, you can only hope for the best.

It seems like every single season, without fail, the Yankees at some point of the season look like they’re finished.

but they end up playing in October anyway.

if that’s not enough reason to have a little faith, that means you SJ44, then I don’t know what is.

  60. Nick in SF April 28th, 2012 at 12:20 am

They’ve had some rough patches already, but they are 11 and 8. Does that count for anything?

  61. BD (Boston Dave) April 28th, 2012 at 12:23 am

    Nick,

counts for plenty. I still think they win the AL EAst with ease.
