Yankees pregame: Swisher update, Nunez in left, Pettitte’s line

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Apr 30, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Hello there, Brian Heyman here for Chad today. Let’s start with this: There are still no plans right now to put Nick Swisher on the DL due to his low-grade strained left hamstring that he suffered yesterday.

“That’s not my category, guys,” Swisher just told us.

But there is a descrepancy about when he’ll be able to play again. Joe Girardi said he’s aiming for him to return in the field next Tuesday. Swisher hopes to be ready to play again Thursday night in Kansas City.

“Me and Skip, we’ve got to get together and get a game plan,” Swisher said. “From the way I feel right now, I wouldn’t see it being a week.”

“Could I pinch hit him?” Girardi said. “We’ve just got to go day by day to see how he’s feeling and where he’s at.”

The Yankees will have just two position players on the bench for this series. Brett Gardner is eligible to come off the DL Thursday. Girardi talked about a rehab assignment for him, which would probably be brief since the manager said, “We haven’t determined what day yet.”

So Eduardo Nunez is getting a shot in left tonight.

“It’s left field. That’s where they put players who can’t play anywhere else,” Gardner cracked. “He’ll be fine.”

Asked if Nunez could turn into a regular outfielder since infield advancement is blocked here right now, Girardi said, “We have him targeted as being an everyday shortstop one day. But, hey, stranger things have happened because of opportunities. You never what the possibilities are. He’s athletic. He has a lot of speed. There are a lot of different things he can do. We’re going to find out.”

Nunez said he’s comfortable in practice out there, but he obviously doesn’t have much game experience.

“I’m never nervous,” Nunez said. “Errors are part of the game. If you’re nervous, you’ll never be a good player. I’ve played this game all my life.” …

Here’s Andy Pettitte’s line from an extended spring training start today against Phillies organization personnel in Clearwater, Fla.: 5 2/3 innings, six runs, five earned, 10 hits, no walks, 8 Ks. He threw 96 pitches, 71 for strikes. Girardi said his understanding was there was “quite a wind blowing out.”

So does Pettitte need one more? Or is he ready?

“I think it’s something we have to talk about,” Girardi said, “see how he feels tomorrow and the next day and decide what’s next.”

Mike Axisa made a good point that the Yankees seem incredibly averse to the DL. They often let a dead weight sit on their roster for ~10 days, forcing bad lineups/defensive alignments in an attempt to avoid DL time. And then sometimes they end up having to DL the player ANYWAYS and a short sighted attempt to pinch hit the player or play them in a game early ends up with them being DLed for even longer than would have occurred originally.

    I’d give AP one more.

And I’d like to see total domination.

  3. austinmac April 30th, 2012 at 5:27 pm

Pettitte’s line against very young, pre-MILB guys says he needs more time. I would like to hear velocity. While he isn’t a velocity guy, loss of a couple mph can make a difference in the movement and ability to spin it. Hasn’t anyone heard about his arm strength.

  4. bruceb April 30th, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Sounds more like a Phil Hughes or Freddy Garcia line rather than Andy Pettitte. I know we’re desperate but we don’t want to rush him back too soon.

  5. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 5:31 pm

Good parts were the # of pitches thrown, no bb’s, and 8k’s.

  6. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 5:36 pm

4 guys to fill 2 slots.

Everyone is expecting AP to take 1.

That means 3 guys for 1 spot in reality.

3 divided into one is not an even #.

    Who’s it gonna be ?

  7. blake April 30th, 2012 at 5:39 pm

If swisher is going to be out a week then DL him.

  8. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 5:41 pm

    Bring up Tyler Austin.

    “Bring up Tyler Austin.”

    Don’t tempt me ;)

Temptation is what I’m all about.

  12. austinmac April 30th, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Bring me up to DH. I promise the pitcher will have to throw me at least three pitches. How’s that for working the count?

  13. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 5:48 pm

    It’s a deal.

You can bunt can’t ya’ ?

  14. JobaTipsHisCap April 30th, 2012 at 5:49 pm

    last chance for Hughes

  15. Niblick April 30th, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Yikes, that’s one scary line for Pettitte.

  16. Yankee Trader April 30th, 2012 at 5:55 pm

    Good afternoon.
Phelps will get to pitch before his family in KC Thursday May 3rd. The Yankees have an off day the 7th so the #5 spot can be skipped, which might allow for Pettittes return. Hughes better look good and stop relying completely on the fastball with 0-2 counts. :)

  17. austinmac April 30th, 2012 at 5:55 pm

If I bunt, I might just put it in fair territory ruining my three pitch rule. I am a specialist. I take or I swing and miss.

  18. jr1212 April 30th, 2012 at 5:55 pm

If Swisher cant play until next tuesday just DL him. No point in carrying an injured player for a week

  19. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 5:56 pm

I think Phelpsey is gonna be extra motivated.

  20. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 5:57 pm

Just bunt on the 3rd pitch.

    We need ya’ Man !

Tyler Austin 20 yo, Bryce Harper 19 yo. Harper moved fro low A–AA-AAA in a year and is now up.

Will Tyler Austin be able to do the same? His bat has been lethal. How’s the glove?

  22. austinmac April 30th, 2012 at 6:01 pm

Okay I’m off to the batting cage.

My wife has begun her new job and begins training in Logan tomorrow. Weather looks great.

  23. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 6:01 pm

You’d be pretty good too if you were named after a National Park.

Maybe Tyler should change his name to Yosemite Austin ?

    Might work.

  24. Yankee Trader April 30th, 2012 at 6:01 pm

Adrian Beltre had a mild hamstring pull a week ago Saturday. Wasn’t he back vs the Yankees the next Tuesday, playing 3rd?

Hey!! They gave Rondo a game!! I was hoping for multiple games, since this was his 2nd offense in 3 months, but Ill take 1 game. More than I was expecting.

Rondo looks like a criminal of the worst kind. His violence is sickening. I really hope he murders someone so he might get put on trial. Criminal.

Swisher certainly has been boosting the stats in his walk year. Finishing the year with around a .280 BA, 30+ homers,>120 RBIs.

I wonder what the percentages are for batters in their walk year. Do a clear majority perform better?

  30. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 6:09 pm

I do not know the Northern part of the State all that well but I’ll try to help if I can.

    Best of luck to her.

  31. Jerkface April 30th, 2012 at 6:11 pm

I wonder what the percentages are for batters in their walk year. Do a clear majority perform better?

I think it was found that players on average perform better in their walk years, but it was by a pretty marginal percent.

  32. Jerkface April 30th, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Over the past nine years, 177 players performing in the last year of a
contract hit for a collective .282 batting average, with an .824 OPS
(on-base plus slugging percentage, an increasingly used measurement of
the moneyball era). They also averaged 19 home runs, 51 extra base hits
and 73 runs batted in per 500 at-bats.

    That’s not much different
from their collective numbers from the previous year: .283 batting
average, .821 OPS, 19 homers, 51 extra base hits and 74 RBI. Two years
before? A .279 batting average and .809 OPS, with 18 home runs, 50 extra
base hits and 73 RBI per 500 at-bats.

According to the front page of the paper a woman from Maine survived for 4 days in the mts out there with a broken leg.

We had a guy do the same sort of thing out this way not too long ago on a hike out in Canyonlands NP I believe.

Injured and he manged to crawl out alive.

    Lucky, lucky Man.

    Here’s the actual story :

  46. MTU April 30th, 2012 at 6:43 pm

Maybe the reason the guy survived was because he was from Carolina.

    Tough bugger.

    It’s about that time.

    Enjoy the game folks.

I just asked Siri who’s the best center fielder in baseball. While she didn’t name Matt Kemp, she led me to the site of current best center fielders.
    1. Matt Kemp
    2. Curtis Granderson
    3.Jacoby Ellsbury
    4. Michael Bourn
    5. Shane Victorino

Didn’t hear about the one in Maine.

    Knew about the other one.

  52. HebrewHammer April 30th, 2012 at 6:51 pm

Man, I still cannot believe that Brett Gardner did not win a Gold Glove. Probably the usual voters who never watched this guy time and time again and his unbelievable defense. I honestly think he is one of the best or arguably the best defense in MLB !

It’s BS tho, Derek Jeter did not deserve the votes for the AllStar game, as with a lot of players.

  53. Yankee Trader April 30th, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Did you watch the Austin Powers video of Will Farrell. If you want a good laugh before the game:

    Late to the party.

I was on the phone so I missed the other posts.

Soon time to switch to the game and watch Kuroda continue with a second successive great outing.

    Enjoy everyone.

story of the so called Fremantle Six is one of the most unlikely and heroic escape stories in the history of the high seas, said Jared Lipworth, executive producer of SECRETS OF THE DEAD. grit and determination inspired generations of Irish patriots and the resonance of their success helped turn the tide of history in favor of Irish independence. Few of us know about the story of this incredible prison break, even though Americans played a major role in it, so we excited to reveal this pivotal moment in history on SECRETS OF THE DEAD. They had been recruited by John Devoy, who led them in a failed rebellion against Great Britain under Queen Victoria. While the six soldiers were convicted of treason and imprisoned, Devoy, a civilian, was exiled to America. He was working for the New York Herald when the letter that catalytic cry for help penned by his old recruit James Wilson landed on his desk.
