Nova strikes out 12, still takes the loss

Ivan Nova struckout a career-high 12 batters this afternoon. He also took the loss. Joey Votto’s three-run homer in the fifth inning was the big blow in a 6-5 Reds win at Yankee Stadium. Nova struck out the three batters after the home run — and got his first seven outs on strikeouts –┬ábut the Reds offense did enough to beat a Yankees lineup that did too little, too late with a ninth-inning rally. Raul Ibanez doubled to start the ninth, Nick Swisher and Jayson Nix each had RBI singles — Nix had a three-hit game — but the tying run was left stranded at third base when Curtis Granderson grounded to first.
