TV/Radio: MY9/WCBS 880

Umpires: Mark Wegner HP, Mike Muchlinski 1B, Wally Bell 2B, Mike Winters 3B

Weather: 67 degrees, mostly cloudy

Negative numbers: The Yankees are 6 for their last 72 with runners in scoring position and 7 for 37 overall this season with the bases loaded.

More negative numbers, or at least even numbers: This 21-21 start marks the latest the Yankees have been at .500 since they were 33-33 heading into play on June 12, 2008.

Jeter watch: The Captain owns 3,148 hits, 16th on the all-time list. Paul Waner is 15th at 3,152 and George Brett is 14th at 3,154.

Update, 7:12: Impressive start for Phil Hughes, 1-2-3 first, looking for his fourth straight good outing.

Update, 7:28: Hughes hitting 94 mph, two perfect innings now.

Update, 7:34: Boos for Teixeira after rapping into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. Teixeira now 3 for his last 17. Swisher is now 3 for his last 28.

Update, 7:42: Hughes hangs a curve and Humberto Quintero lines it into the right-field corner for a double and a 1-0 lead in the third.

Update, 7:53: Jeter raps into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, doesn’t get booed.

Update, 7:59: Jeff Francoeur takes a 2-0 pitch over the scoreboard in left, 2-0. I began the game wondering if Hughes was going to have to pitch a shutout to tie.

Update, 8:07: Cano puts No. 5 into the Yankees’ bullpen, 2-1 in the fourth, two hits now for the Yankees.

Update, 8:09: A-Rod running aggressively again, single and steal.

Update, 8:22: Seven Ks for Hughes through five.

Update, 8:26: Teixeira on second with no outs after a single and an error, RISP time.

Update, 8:30: Bases loaded, nobody out. They’ve got to get a run in here, don’t they?

Update, 8:34: Jeter lines a single to right, 2-2, bases still loaded. An actual hit with a runner in scoring position.

Update, 8:36: Granderson grounds to second, 3-2 Yankees.

Update, 8:37: Royals intentionally walk Cano, so A-Rod comes up with the bases loaded.

Update, 8:39: A-Rod fans trying to check his swing, two outs for Ibanez.

Update, 8:42: Ibanez goes down swinging. Apparently, this RISP problem isn’t cured.

Update, 8:52: Bases loaded, two outs for the Royals in the sixth. Hughes is at 104 pitches.

Update, 8:53: Hughes gets Falu to fly to left-center. So another good outing for Hughes, two runs, five hits, seven Ks, two walks, six innings.

Update, 9:01: Cory Wade on for the seventh.

Update, 9:04: Boone Logan comes on after Wade gets two quick outs.

Update, 9:16: Hochevar is done after 6 2/3, down 3-2. Lefty Jose Mijares comes on.

Update, 9:23: Logan doesn’t get over to first fast enough, Mark Teixeira can’t get to the bag and Eric Hosmer has a gift infield single thanks to Logan. Cody Eppley comes on with no outs here in the eighth.

Update, 9:27: Eppley gets a fly ball. Girardi mixing and matching. Clay Rapada coming in.

Update, 9:30: Rapada does his job quickly, liner to first, double play.

Update, 9:37: Soriano will try to close it out.

Update, 9:42: Soriano gives up a ground-rule double to Alex Gordon, one out.

Update, 9:47: Yankees win, 3-2.
