I’m flying to West Coast this morning, which means my day started with a little bit of a rush. I didn’t have time to eat breakfast, and I certainly didn’t have time to read the papers before I got in the car and headed for J.F.K. I didn’t know about this story until I heard about it on the car radio.
The Daily News is reporting that the Steinbrenner family is exploring the idea of selling the Yankees. There seems to be no indication that a sale is close, but the News cites multiple sources saying the Steinbrenners are looking into it. Randy Levine is quoted in the story saying there’s no truth to the rumor.
“I can say to you there is absolutely, positively nothing to this,” Levine told the News. “The Steinbrenners are not selling the team.”
Based on what I heard on the radio, it sounds like the organization is definitively shooting down the story. On WFAN, Lonn Trost called it a “fabrication” and said it belonged in a fiction section of the paper.
As you’re all well aware, Hal Steinbrenner has talked publicly about cutting back payrole, and he seems to pride himself as a businessman first and a baseball-man second. As ups
