After last night’s win, the Yankees are a season-high six games above .500. They’re a half game out of first place and could move to the top of the division with a win tonight (and a Baltimore loss). Most of the past month or so has been spent writing and talking about how bad this team has been playing, but the truth is, the Yankees are playing pretty well right now.
“I just like the way were playing,” Joe Girardi said. “I actually felt like we were 6-3 on the road trip, and maybe if we didn’t lose two of the games the way we did you might have felt a lot better about that 6-3 because those were tough losses. But we won the last two at home before we went on that road trip and we’re playing a lot better baseball. So whether it’s a streak or its not a streak, I just liked it.”
The Yankees have won nine of their last 12, and they’ve scored at least five runs in eight of their past 11. Granted, the Yankees started winning against Kansas City and Oakland, but they’ve won five of their past four against the Angels, Tigers and Rays. There are still problems with clutch hitting, and although the bullpen has been terrific, it will get a real boost when Dave Robertson comes off the disabled list, but right now might be one of those times when it’s OK to feel OK.
“Right now, we feel good,” Russell Martin said. “When you get your pitching going and your offense gets going, too, it’s normally a good sign. Right now, we have to just keep the ball rolling. Every day is a different day, but we feel pretty confident right now.”
Said Girardi: “We went through some inconsistent play over the course of this year. And, you know, we’re basically in control of our own destiny, which is a good thing. You get the offense to be consistent and the pitching, I believe, has picked up, the rotation has picked up for us, and it’s extremely important. We’ll start putting together some better streaks.”
