Martin: “We feel pretty confident right now”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 06, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

After last night’s win, the Yankees are a season-high six games above .500. They’re a half game out of first place and could move to the top of the division with a win tonight (and a Baltimore loss). Most of the past month or so has been spent writing and talking about how bad this team has been playing, but the truth is, the Yankees are playing pretty well right now.

“I just like the way were playing,” Joe Girardi said. “I actually felt like we were 6-3 on the road trip, and maybe if we didn’t lose two of the games the way we did you might have felt a lot better about that 6-3 because those were tough losses. But we won the last two at home before we went on that road trip and we’re playing a lot better baseball. So whether it’s a streak or its not a streak, I just liked it.”

The Yankees have won nine of their last 12, and they’ve scored at least five runs in eight of their past 11. Granted, the Yankees started winning against Kansas City and Oakland, but they’ve won five of their past four against the Angels, Tigers and Rays. There are still problems with clutch hitting, and although the bullpen has been terrific, it will get a real boost when Dave Robertson comes off the disabled list, but right now might be one of those times when it’s OK to feel OK.

“Right now, we feel good,” Russell Martin said. “When you get your pitching going and your offense gets going, too, it’s normally a good sign. Right now, we have to just keep the ball rolling. Every day is a different day, but we feel pretty confident right now.”

Said Girardi: “We went through some inconsistent play over the course of this year. And, you know, we’re basically in control of our own destiny, which is a good thing. You get the offense to be consistent and the pitching, I believe, has picked up, the rotation has picked up for us, and it’s extremely important. We’ll start putting together some better streaks.”

Now THIS is enough to get me back to Yankee Stadium:

    Benny,

No prob….it was a good comp.

    LGY,

I agree…..the Yanks should make the playoffs so with Andy the #1 goal is to have him ready for game 2 or 3 of the ALDS……..obviously you have to play the games and winnjng the division is really important….but they have the depth to manage his innings and give hin an extra day here and there when he needs it…..

  3. Doc Iac June 6th, 2012 at 9:26 am

pettite is the man, watchin him on the mound always relaxes me…

  4. ac1 June 6th, 2012 at 9:50 am

AP is 3-2 in 5 starts and Cliffy Lee is 0-3 in 9 starts. They both have the same whip @1.01 however Andy’s era is better and he’s pitching in a much tougher division.
    _____________

Still remember Cliff Lee going on about why he ‘chose’ Philly over NY. Apparently they have a younger team with more talent and will be a top team for years to come unlike the yankees…..

Oh well….. Have fun in Philly losing 2-1 games every 5 days Cliff!

Just read the comments by Dbacks owner re Drew. I used to cringe whenever George called out Yankees players, the most infamous example being labeling Winfield as Mr May.

But if there’s even a shred of truth to the statement about Drew, then it’s not about his performance (as in Upton’s case) but about Drew’s integrity.

It’s one thing not to risk injury on the field … but to collect a paycheck while not playing if you’re able … that’s malingering.

With Texas’s pitching issuea that have cropped up there isnt a team without warts……I have concerns about the Yankees offense for the future but if they get to the dance and everything holds as is then they shoukd have as good a shot as any…..

  8. DONNYBROOK June 6th, 2012 at 10:20 am

My Major concern with the Yanks, is whether Hal will “man up” and spend the jack come July 31 to improve the team. You know Texas will, and Reinsdorf will do likewise with Chicago. If the Yanks merely tread water, they will be falling behind. Hamels appears to be the Biggest fish out there. With Halladay out 6-8 weeks, Philly will be cutting bait shortly.

  9. sunny615 June 6th, 2012 at 10:26 am

The cost of getting Hamels from the Phils (Assuming they’re still in the tank) will be enormous. Probably starting with Banuelos and then some. And with Theo in Chicago, you know he’d start the conversation there too for Garza…

  10. blake June 6th, 2012 at 10:43 am

I dont think they need to trade for pitching……the two guys that are upgrades will be expensive in players and the rest arent real upgrades over what they have…..
Looks for bats and a lefty reliever thats better than Rapada.

  11. sunny615 June 6th, 2012 at 10:45 am

Maybe, but Hamels > Garza >> Nova

  12. Mike Ri June 6th, 2012 at 10:48 am

Like Garza alot .. .but the idea of Cole in pinstripes is enticing …

i do think the prices for both would be out of this world though.

  13. sunny615 June 6th, 2012 at 10:51 am

i do think the prices for both would be out of this world though.

    ……

    agreed

  14. RayVT June 6th, 2012 at 10:54 am

Yes Mike I think it will be, but maybe stealth CashMoney has this plan to talk low & sign Hamels still. Hopefully, the Yanks sign Soler soon too!

  15. Wave Your Hat June 6th, 2012 at 10:56 am

When Gardner gets back there’s no need for another bat, unless you find one at catcher, where there isn’t one likely gettable.

“To the legendary Ray Bradbury, RIP”

Sorry to hear that. A mainstay of my childhood.

  18. RayVT June 6th, 2012 at 10:59 am

I wonder who truly would be in the Market for Hamels?

LAD, O’s, Tex, Cards, RSox??, Yanks??, Phils, ???

I wonder if Yanks could do a deal for Hamels like:
    Yr1 – $5M
    Yr2 – $10M
    Yr3 – $20M
    Yr4 – $30M
    Y45 thru Y9 – $30M

  19. GreenBeret7 June 6th, 2012 at 11:04 am

I first became acquainted with the work of Ray Bradbury back in the late 50s when The Ray Bradbury Theatre showed on wGN Chicago. Was never a big fan of sci-fi or mysteries, but, I enjoyed his work.

  20. LGY June 6th, 2012 at 11:05 am

I wonder if Yanks could do a deal for Hamels like:
    Yr1 – $5M
    Yr2 – $10M
    Yr3 – $20M
    Yr4 – $30M
    Y45 thru Y9 – $30M

    ———-

Are you saying the Yankees should give Hamels 9 years $215M??

  21. longtimefan June 6th, 2012 at 11:08 am

Great game by Andy, I hope some of the younger staff Hughes, Nova, and Phelps paid attention and use this guy as an example of how to pitch and exist in NY–will make a great pitching coach in the near future

  22. longtimefan June 6th, 2012 at 11:12 am

I respect everyone’s opinion on Hamels but IMO he is not a NY type of guy–many talented pitchers came to NY and failed miserabley, Garza would be better suited to playing in NY and cheaper.

  23. Jerkface June 6th, 2012 at 11:17 am

I wonder if Yanks could do a deal for Hamels like:
    Yr1 – $5M
    Yr2 – $10M
    Yr3 – $20M
    Yr4 – $30M
    Y45 thru Y9 – $30M

They could, but it wouldnt help them with the luxury tax

  24. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:22 am

Id much rather Cashman find a creative deal for a young outfielder or third baseman than to over pay for pitching…..if you want Hamels then wait til this winter and pay bjg in dollars…..not prospects + dollars…..they have enough pitching to win if they hit….

  25. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:24 am

Hamels is better suited to pitch in NY than Garza cause hes a better pitcher and hes ldft handed…..I do like Garza but any deal will start with Banuelos plus more…..and then you have to sign him….its just too much IMO for the level of upgrade hed be…..

  26. Wave Your Hat June 6th, 2012 at 11:25 am

“they have enough pitching to win if they hit….”

Sure, but blake, they also have enough hitting to win if they pitch.

I’m not against grabbing a talented young outfielder (hopefully no room at third for a while) but I think that deal is unlikely. I don’t think the Yanks have the pieces necessary to get a good enough young outfielder.

  27. longtimefan June 6th, 2012 at 11:29 am

There have been better left handed pitchers that have failed in NY before, Randy Johnson comes to mind quickly, Hamels seems a little fragile to me, where Garza had the Tampa experience and tutoring of Madden.

  28. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:33 am

“Sure, but blake, they also have enough hitting to win if they pitch.”

Sure….but as I said I think they need offense more overall when you look beyond this year….my issue is overpaying for pitching…..I dont think they can get a real upgrade to the rotation (Garza or Hamels) without paying a lot……if they are going to pay a lot for something id rather it be a position player or just stand pat…..

  29. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:34 am

Randy Johnson was old as a Yankee…..Id be willing to bet if they traded for him in 1999 he would have done just fine in NY.

  30. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:36 am

If they can get Garza or Hamels for less than I think they can then cool……go ahead……ll

  31. tucker June 6th, 2012 at 11:37 am

The contracts are calculated as annual average value, so that contract would cost the Yanks more than $23 million per year … Don’t think Hamels is worth that …

Yanks should make a push for Upton, even if it costs a package starting with Banuelos and Mason Williams. Upton, Cano and Granderson woul be enough to carry the team thru A Rod’s decline and Tex’s inconsistent production.

  32. bruceb June 6th, 2012 at 11:38 am

“they’ve won five of their past four against the Angels, Tigers and Rays”

    Now that is impressive!

  33. djsunyc June 6th, 2012 at 11:42 am

the talented young outfielder will probably be bj upton. even tho he strikes out alot, i think he will benefit being around guys like jeter + arod along with kevin long. and i think with him and gardner, we are really putting more speed out there.

  34. Wave Your Hat June 6th, 2012 at 11:43 am

“Sure….but as I said I think they need offense more overall when you look beyond this year….my issue is overpaying for pitching…..I dont think they can get a real upgrade to the rotation (Garza or Hamels) without paying a lot……if they are going to pay a lot for something id rather it be a position player or just stand pat….”

I just don’t see how. There are 3 places to improve the bat – OF, C and DH. Theyy will probably let Swisher go for CBA reasons, so to replace an OF – Gardner staying put for payroll reasons – you’d need to replace Swisher’s bat, and how are you going to do that in a trade for a young cheap guy? A good hitting catcher is probably a fantasy, and they need to leave the DH open for the geezers.

Given that, you have to look for some pitching. A Garza, or maybe get lucky.

  35. Bo knows June 6th, 2012 at 11:45 am

Everyone is just playing silly bugger. The sure thing. Get pitcher XYZ who will cost 20 mil and there is a budget and the left side of the Inf is 40.

  36. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:45 am

“Yanks should make a push for Upton, even if it costs a package starting with Banuelos and Mason Williams. Upton, Cano and Granderson woul be enough to carry the team thru A Rod’s decline and Tex’s inconsistent production.”

Agree …..doubt theyd rrade him though.

  37. Wave Your Hat June 6th, 2012 at 11:47 am

Upton is not as good as Swisher. He can’t be had in a trade. Paying for him as a free agent is the wrong way to go, IMO.

  38. Bo knows June 6th, 2012 at 11:49 am

The object of the exercise is to get cheap pitching. Banuelos is a year away from trying out on the Majors roster. Nova is going through growing pains as we speak. Pineda might be a little over a year. The BP is backed up through infinity.

Why in God’s name would you trade the farm for Garza or Hamels?

  39. blake June 6th, 2012 at 11:49 am

    – “you’d need to replace Swisher’s bat, and how are you going to do that in a trade for a young cheap guy?”

They have to replace his bat anyway……is rather it be with a young guy that might het better than Tori Hunter or somebody.

Its hard to say because I dont know whats available or what the prices are…..but Cashman should be checking on buying low on guys lije Heyward and Upton….he should be checking on guys that are close but still in the minors like Wil Myers…..he ahould be checking on guys that have two or more years left that are established like Choo…..etc….

I dont know if there is a match for anybody….just saying they should look…..just dont want them to come up in January and say….well we canf afford Swish so lets sign stopgap X for RF…..

  40. tucker June 6th, 2012 at 11:50 am

BJ Upton probably has more talent than he is showing, but I would still rather have his brother. He would be good for 40 HR per year at Yankee Stadium.

Per the earlier conversation, DBacks owner Kendrick is a bit of a loose cannon. Unprompted in 2006, he said there were “whispers”‘about Luis Gonzalez’s use of steroids. Now why would you call out the one player in franchise history who took your team and won a World Series?

  41. Warning Track Power June 6th, 2012 at 11:51 am

Pettitte was outstanding last night. He kept the hitters off balance with that fastball/slider combo.
Did anybody else notice that once again Andy “mouthed” instructions to Martin about
the next pitch & location? He did that when he struck out E. Johnson in the 3rd inning.
The cameras captured Andy saying, “up and in”.
No other pitcher does that as much as Andy. I understand that he does this when the hitter
is NOT looking. Which is a great move on Andy’s part.

  42. Against All Odds June 6th, 2012 at 12:03 pm

well we canf afford Swish so lets sign stopgap X for RF…..

    ———————————————

Unfortunately we all know that’s what they’re going to do.

  43. champ809 June 6th, 2012 at 12:20 pm

The trade scenarios being thrown around here obviously refer to Justin Upton not BJ and wave I’m assuming you are refering to BJ not being as good as Swisher and not Justin who is light years ahead of Nick as a player…

I’m not sure I’d be willing to trade Banny and Mason ++ for Justin if they are serious about the budgets going forward. From a talent standpoint a 2-3-4-5 of Grandy-J Upton-Cano-ARod would be sick though

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
