Jeter: “We’ve been playing well for quite some time now”

Joe Girardi saw yesterday’s game as proof that the Yankees are playing well, possibly even building something larger…

“We prepare ourselves and go to work everyday,” Girardi said. “But you hope that’s the case. It can come from different spots. When our club puts together streaks over the year, it comes from all different directions. It has come from different guys in the lineup, it’s guys in the bullpen stepping up, and you need that. Every team is going to go through their difficult times and injuries, and you have to find ways to overcome some of that.”

Andy Pettitte saw yesterday’s game as proof that the Yankees are playing well, but not yet satisfied…

“We had already won the series,” Pettitte said. “So maybe we feel like kinda throwing this one in. Oh, this isn’t our day. Niese was shutting us down, making great pitches, really threw a great game. So it’s just good (to win). It’s a good win. The guys, to keep battling the way they did, not to give up (after) the Mets played us tough today. It was a good win. It was one we could have just chalked up as a loss — a, hey, we won the series, let’s go on to Atlanta — but any time you can sweep anyone, that’s real tough to do. So it was a real nice win for us today. … We feel real good about what we’re doing. The excitement, those are things that carry over.”

Derek Jeter saw yesterday’s game as proof the Yankees are playing well, but it’s early June and there’s a long way to go…

“We’ve been playing well for quite some time now,” Jeter said. “(This week) we’re facing some teams we don’t know too much about, obviously some good teams. But I like how we’re playing, especially our pitchers. Our starters are doing a great job, and hopefully it’ll continue.”
