Powerful eighth inning carries Yankees

The Yankees seemed finished three weeks ago, but they weren’t. They seemed finished after seven innings tonight. But they weren’t. Alex Rodriguez’s grand slam and Nick Swisher’s two-run homer sent the Yankees to a stunning 6-4 win in Atlanta tonight. They were being shutout before the eighth inning, when Rodriguez’s record-tying 23rd career grand slam tied the game before Swisher’s 10th homer of the year put the Yankees in front. The Braves scored three runs in the first inning and another in the seventh. It seemed far too much before the Yankees went to work in the eighth, guaranteeing at least a share of first place, and sole possession if the Mets can hang on to beat the Rays.
