haven’t seen so many wet noodles in a row since looking into my kid’s half empty pasta bowl last night

  2. JM June 18th, 2012 at 3:34 pm

TheDA53 First real game tomorrow. I’m making the home opening start for your GCL Yankees. I heard its sold out #keepworking

Looks like Aardsma might be back sooner rather than later….

  3. Wave Your Hat June 18th, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Here’s a shout-out to Cashman for putting together a team that has a nine game winning streak and is in front of the AL East by 1.5 games.

  4. Phranchise June 18th, 2012 at 3:42 pm

I can’t imagine you will see Martin and Stewart in the same lineup too often. Fairly ugly for tonight. I feel like they are definitely playing with fire though throwing Ibanez out there along with Chavez and Jones too often. One of the old crew will go down if you keep doing it so the right call for tonight I think. Hopefully a dominant performance from CC tonight.

  5. EA June 18th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

This really is an awful lineup. I guess Minor does have a chance to breeze through our lineup twice in a row.

  6. Shame Spencer June 18th, 2012 at 3:44 pm

I know I’m gonna get blasted for complaining about the line-up but:

    Martin at DH.

    MARTIN at DH.

You just get done with a ton of interleague games where you cant utilize the position and the first chance you get you put MARTIN at DH.

    I hate our roster.

  7. Hassey June 18th, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Martin goes yard twice tonite and Stewart 2-4 with 3 RBI

  8. RadioKev June 18th, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Folks complaining about this lineup shake my faith in humanity.

  9. Niblick June 18th, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Binder Joe just can’t bring himself to break up the CC-Stewart love nest, even though it hasn’t been working too well. Time for a divorce.

  10. Hassey June 18th, 2012 at 3:49 pm

NO worries, guys. Chris Stewart now lives in my mother-in-law’s townhouse development in White Plains – I’ll send her over there to have one of her “talks” with him.

  11. Wave Your Hat June 18th, 2012 at 3:49 pm

SSS, sure, but Martin does have a 1.105 OPS vs LHP.

Just absurd. Stewie catching CC again. Whats with this god damn personal catcher crap? He never needed one before, and has been struggling mightily this year. Stewie just caught yesterday. This is a joke. Im not complaining about the lineup…

  14. Hassey June 18th, 2012 at 3:51 pm

why is everyone so afraid to complain about the line-up on any given night?

Isn’t this the US of A with all of those amendments and freedoms in that thing?

  15. blake June 18th, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Lineup looks pretty decent to me with Swisher still out….they need to get Derek a day sometime…..they may need to trade for a utility guy that can play SS if Nunez cant catch thr ball and they dont feel comfortable putting Nix there.

Cash will be on MLB radio here in a few minutes.

  16. We Want Mo Mo June 18th, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Hassey, I frequent White Plains all the time now, right next to where some of the Knicks and Rangers live in the Trump Towers. Stewie live anywhere near there?

  17. Wave Your Hat June 18th, 2012 at 3:53 pm

The Yanks are facing a lefty, so Ibanez and Chavez are sub-optimal, and Swisher is hurt. Given that, how else would you make the lineup?

  18. blake June 18th, 2012 at 3:53 pm

“It does work like that, but only for trades. The AAV wont change for the rockies going forward, but whoever trades for him gets the remaining portion of the contract. Now if they traded for him at the deadline, that would cut about 2 million per year off the AAV, so then he’d be about 12 and if you really like Cargo that’d be more of a steal.”

You sure? I didnt realize that but its still a good deal moneywise….but not quite as good.

    Hello everyone,

First i have to say to G Love, Yankefem, JAP, DaveD and others. That as usual, you have explained the way i feel toward this FO much better than i could ever do it. Kudos to all.

About Lee…I was never for the trade for him with Seattle and i was against signing him as FA afterwards…So i was very happy that he chosed the Phillies instead of the Yankees…We needed to get younger then and we need to get younger now…i thought at the time, that it would block some of our prospects and would make the payroll more inflexible than it already was…Imagine that contract with this new CBA and budget restrictions, YIKES!. So I say NO to Cliff Lee, let him rot in Philly.

About Hamels…I wouldn´t trade for him either, especially with the new CBA…I wouldn´t want him as FA either, again it would make our payroll too inflexible and we have plenty of options either on the current rotation or in the farm. Have we had a 110 mil payroll i would consider it, but that´s not the case. I would rather use our money to either resign Cano and Granderson and extend Hughes. Those should be our main goals, unless they decide to enter a complete rebuilding process (Don´t see it happening)

I was in favor of the trade of Kennedy, i thought it was a good move.

  20. Warning Track Power June 18th, 2012 at 3:55 pm

Swisher took a shot to his leg. That was a bone bruise a 1st year med student could
    have predicted.
Did anybody else notice “the tag” on ARod during the game by the Nats SS? The play was when ARod was caught between 2nd and 3rd. He was tagged out but after the tag, ARod seemed to glare at the player, as if to say, “i don’t appreciate how hard you tagged me”.
Anybody notice that? Maybe the player verbally abused ARod with some smack-talk as he
    applied the tag?

  21. blake June 18th, 2012 at 3:55 pm

“The Yanks are facing a lefty, so Ibanez and Chavez are sub-optimal, and Swisher is hurt. Given that, how else would you make the lineup?”

Well you never love to have both catchers in the lineup cause if one gets hurt you lose the DH…..but with Swisher down its about the best they can do if he wants to get Martin a day.

  22. Hassey June 18th, 2012 at 3:56 pm

I would much rather keep the Charleston core group together and sign an outfielder in place of CarGo. He would cost Manny Banuelos, Mason Williams, Tyler Austin, Dante Bichette Jr. and Jose Campos. I think Melky + Banuelos + Williams + Austin + Bichette Jr. + Campos is far more valuable than CarGo. It’s not close.

    Agreed.

Chavez, Nix, and co have done a fine job but they don’t cover SS and that’s a clear need so Jeter can get a day here and there without losing too much on D.

Well yea….I wouldnt give all that up for him. That deal is very unlikely…..just something to talk about…..the problem with just signijg somebody instead is that there isnt anybody like that available unless you want to sign Hamilton and all those guys will cost mkre in dollars.

  34. EA June 18th, 2012 at 4:04 pm

They can’t have any high priced player in RF if they want to stick to the budget. That includes Melky or CarGo

    Car-Go makes $63.5 million (10.5, 16, 17, and 20) in years 2014-2017

  44. Shame Spencer June 18th, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Just to be clear – What actually bothers me about this line up is that we’ve now read articles about how Girardi was unhappy with Martin’s game calling, which was supposed to have been taken care of.. yet we still see a Stewie-CC combo.

I don’t really love that Girardi doesn’t seem to trust Martin catching CC… or something along those lines. It could be that CC just hasn’t gotten it together yet so Girardi wants to keep him with one catcher until he does (no doubt in my mind Martin catches every playoff game, btw, so I’m not bridge jumping), but there’s something iffy about this to me.

Eh…. I know it’s probably just Girardi in love with Martin’s stat line against LHP.. but I still think it’s weird.

  45. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Good, now find a way to keep him past 2013.

  46. luis June 18th, 2012 at 4:13 pm

It wasn´t his blueprint….He held to Hughes and Nova, yes….But if pineda doesn´t get hurt and Garcia pitches reasonably well, where would they be?…We are where we are despite him

    Was gonna ask this too.

The real question is, at SS is:

    Nunez > Nix?

The answer could be yes, but I’m genuinely asking.

  50. CountryClub June 18th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

My 2 cents on Clemens (and I have only followed trial loosely):

I think he’s found not guilty. No way there can’t be a little bit of reasonable doubt with that clown as the star gov’t witness.

Nix is doing what Nunez was asked to do, only better. Minus the stolen base threat.
Nix is doing a fine job. He’s earned his roster spot to date.

  52. We Want Mo Mo June 18th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Rich, lets see how the rest of this year goes before we think about extending him.

  53. Ys Guy June 18th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

i have been led to believe that when a player is traded, the remaining guaranteed amount on the contract % by the number of years left determines the aav toward the luxury tax. that works out to $14.2M after this year (it would be a little lower because it would include the last 1/3 of this year’s salary actually)

it’s not that bad, but it may well fall outside what they can fit into the budget and still keep cano/granderson.

don’t forget mo either. if he has a good 2013 and decides to come back, they will have no choice but to pay him $10M or more. he said he was leaning toward coming back next year before his injury.

  54. blake June 18th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

More on Andy: one of the massive leaders under the radar…..takes players under his wing….explains the city and media to new players…..missed him when he wasnt here…..like having an extra life coach.

On bullpen: when “ownership” signed Soriano (lol) it gave us depth and now even without Mo we coukd have 4 or 5 closer arms soon….talked about Eppley and how good Girardi is at managing bullpens.

  55. We Want Mo Mo June 18th, 2012 at 4:15 pm

Nunez isnt better than anyone at SS or at any position. The guy is an error machine.

  60. 4time June 18th, 2012 at 4:16 pm

If he believed in Hughes/Nova, there would be no need to sign Kuroda, AND trade their big chip for Pineda, AND say yes to Andy with a week left in ST. After already giving Garcia $4 mil too.

This wasn’t some grand plan by Cashman.

  61. Warning Track Power June 18th, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Martin can use the rest after that 14 inning game. Since the Braves starter is a lefty, that eliminated Ibanez from the starting line-up. Plus, I’m sure Ibanez can use a day off
as well. We can’t forget the guy is 40.

  62. Ys Guy June 18th, 2012 at 4:17 pm

i havent followed it that much either, but i kinda think roger will be convicted. and from what i hear, he’s got the hanging judge sitting on the case, so he’d better hope not.

if he’s convicted, im sure he’ll win an apeal though.

  63. Bret The Hitman June 18th, 2012 at 4:17 pm

    Luis,

Cashman’s blueprint was to overstock the rotation with pitchers. Had Pineda stayed healthy, maybe Hughes gets injured or Nova struggles or Andy never gets back to being Andy. A hundred different scenarios could’ve played out. Maybe Cashman doesn’t deserve credit for predicting the rise of Hughes and Nova but he does deserve some points for engineering a rotation that was resilient to misfortune.

  66. Wave Your Hat June 18th, 2012 at 4:19 pm

“This wasn’t some grand plan by Cashman.”

It’s not inconsistent with it. Pineda has (or had, let’s not argue) a higher ceiling than either Hughes or Nova. Kuroda was short term. He got lucky with Pettitte but nothing wrong with that.

  67. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2012 at 4:19 pm

“Rich, lets see how the rest of this year goes before we think about extending him.”

If you wait too long, the price could become prohibitive. Under the new financial reality of the current CBA, they are going to have to take risks to lockup some of their own players.

  68. blake June 18th, 2012 at 4:20 pm

Trade deadline : not certain yet what he will do….still waiting to see. Likes the lineup and hopes to get Gardner back.

  74. luis June 18th, 2012 at 4:23 pm

    Bret,

But the reality is that we have a very good rotation with the pieces that were either here ( CC, Nova, Hughes) or could be had at a reasonable cost ( Pettitte and Kuroda). And we still have some depth left either on the BP ( Garcia) or triple A ( Phelps and Warren ). If he doesn´t make the move, then we have Noesi and you know who. He had the depth, he just didn´t trust it. He was forced to do so. Hardly an accomplishment.

  75. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2012 at 4:23 pm

“Talked about all the moves Boston has had to make to make up for losing him…….”

He should also talk about the moves they can’t make because they got him.

Too many variables that can’t be controlled when formulating a hypothesis. Age – injury – development, etc.

  77. blake June 18th, 2012 at 4:25 pm

On Gardner: huge defensive guy and need to get him back….should have won the gold glove last year…..run preventer.

“Too many variables that can’t be controlled when formulating a hypothesis. Age – injury – development, etc.”

That’s why Cashman wanted a deep rotation with alternatives, which he tried to do and which resulted in the current rotation which is pitching pretty well.

  80. Ys Guy June 18th, 2012 at 4:25 pm

if i were hughes, no way would i sign a lowball extension during the season. he seems smart and confident and im sure he’s well represented. he has to think he’s got a shot to win another 10 games this year. that would give him 40 wins in his last 3 seasons, which is a benchmark that will drive his salary way up either in an extension or from arbitration.

i can’t see him thinking his value isnt going to rise and taking less now.

  81. Bret The Hitman June 18th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

    Luis,

I’m glad he planned for the worst and added Pineda on top of the depth. He could not have predicted with certainty that all the other arms would have worked out the way they have. Nova is a sophomore. Hughes was coming off an injury. Kuroda was coming from the NL. Pettitte missed a year.

  82. blake June 18th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

“He should also talk about the moves they can’t make because they got him.”

Well thats not on the script ;)

Cash mention anything about his Casanova alter-ego?

  85. luis June 18th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

    WYH,

Nova will become a good number 2 or even an ace. Hughes will be a number two or three, if he develops a sinker along with his CB and CU he could be even better than that. Pineda when he was brought in, was a potential ace provided that he develop that elusive change

  86. Ys Guy June 18th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

wow, dempster…if he doesnt get back healthy after the break, the cubbies are going to lose one of thier best trade chips.

  87. Wave Your Hat June 18th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

    “That’s my point.”

Then I guess we agree! :)

  88. Shame Spencer June 18th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

Cash believes on overloading the starting rotation. I can’t argue with that. I wanted him to bring back both Garcia AND Colon for the very reason that you can’t just be 3-5 guys deep but have to be like 7-9 guys deep to get through a season.

  89. Locke June 18th, 2012 at 4:28 pm

With all the complaining about the lineup you’d think the Yankees had LOST 9 in a row.

Look at these stats v. LHP:

Maybe not the largest sample size but Martin has 37AB against LHP. He’s got the highest OPS of anybody on the team against LHP. Wow.

I blame ownership, not Cashman, for the extension policy. I would looove to know their thinking on it because it will cost them money, that they can no longer overcompensate for, if they are truly intending to get to $189m.

  94. Wave Your Hat June 18th, 2012 at 4:30 pm

“Nova will become a good number 2 or even an ace. Hughes will be a number two or three, if he develops a sinker along with his CB and CU he could be even better than that. Pineda when he was brought in, was a potential ace provided that he develop that elusive change”

I have to disagree a bit. I don’t think Nova or Hughes has the upside to be a 1 or 2, I think a #3 or 4 is a great result for them. And I still haven’t bought the theory that Pineda needed a killer change to be an ace, although of course it wouldn’t hurt.

  95. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2012 at 4:31 pm

“Cash believes on overloading the starting rotation.I wanted him to bring back both Garcia AND Colon for the very reason that you can’t just be 3-5 guys deep but have to be like 7-9 guys deep to get through a season.”

True, Shame. It’s a worthwhile goal; the issue is the cost to achieve it.

Personally, I thought the Phelps types were fine as placeholders.

  96. Bret The Hitman June 18th, 2012 at 4:32 pm

    Wave,

Most certainly we do. Cashman deserves credit for stockpiling arms, regardless of how things shook out. It’s his job to plan for the future, not control it. I do like Pineda as a potential ace still and feel Montero was sold high. He’s a DH and his value as a hitter was inflated. The Yankees played him to his splits when called up. I wouldn’t be surprise if they love his bat but project it to hit 4 years from now, therefore 6 years of control was not worth much to them, especially at DH. They probably figure by the time he starts to hit (I mean REALLY hit), he will be expensive.

  97. We Want Mo Mo June 18th, 2012 at 4:32 pm

After the inconsistency that has stained Hughes’ early career, I really cant see a good/very good 2012 season driving up his cost that much. Though admittedly, I dont know who his agent is, or if its Boras.

  98. luis June 18th, 2012 at 4:33 pm

    Bret,

I would say that he over reacted. And in doing so, made us more vulnerable to a potential / expected decline of the offense with little wiggle room ( CBA and 189 budget cap ). But that just me.. ;)

  99. We Want Mo Mo June 18th, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Martin is not fully healthy, that is probably why he is DH’ing instead of catching. Girardi said he wants Martin to catch CC, which makes sense because you don’t want to go into the postseason with Martin having not caught CC all year.

  114. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

“of course last week i saw 3 miracles, santana, wang and chris young.”

How is Santana a useful comparison? He now throws 90mph tops, and even before his injury, he learned how to pitch to compensate for diminishing velo. If Pineda finds himself in the same situation, that’s not something he can learn on the fly. He will likely have to start from square one.

  115. Ys Guy June 18th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

i think you guys are wrong about how much a good season this year will mean to phil’s future contract. if he comes into arbitration having won 40 games in 3 years, an average of 13.3 per year, that puts him on a short list which is what drives arbitration. they will produce lists of guys with his service time who have won 40 in 3 years and how much they got and it will definitely drive up the price quite a bit. the rest of this season for huges is a huge derterminant of future pay, imo.

    Wave,

I do….Nova has moxie, the ability to raise to the occasion. That´s very rare, especially on such a young pitcher. Then he has the repertoire ( FB, CU, CB ,SL), the slider and CB being Plus plus and the Fb a plus pitch, the CU is developing.

On Hughes, his upside is right there. He is a little further back in comparison to Nova, but he will develop in to a solid starter even better than that if he keeps developing pitches.

  158. jpmatrixfan88 June 18th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

    Luis,

Saying Nova has a plus-plus slider and curve is ridiculous imo. Id say both are maybe plus pitches when he is on with a good fastball and decent change. Two plus-plus pitches would make him better than Verlander

  159. austinmac June 18th, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I must say I predicted acquittal a long time ago when some people had him convicted by accusation alone. At the end of the day, the case rested on McNamee’s credibility. It was an enormous waste of our money. I hope the one smaking the prosecutorial decisions are held accountable.

I have been in the trial business for a long time, albeit on the civil side. McNamee is an admitted liar. To me, Clemens is vindicated. That is how our system works. No hung jury for him. Complete acquittal. I feel it would be wrong to have a black cloud when the jury didn’t believe he lied.

  165. There Will Never Be Another Mo June 18th, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Saying Nova has a plus-plus slider and curve is ridiculous imo

    *********

I have to second this thought. To me, plus plus pitches would be a Randy Johnson slider, a Pedro Martinez curveball, a Josh Beckett 2003/2007 curveball, a Kerry Wood fastball, a Mo cutter, a 1996 Mo rising fastball. Very few have plus pitches, let alone plus plus pitches. And it is comical to hear prospects have plus pitches in the minors. They may have the “potential” to be a plus pitch, but if it was truly a plus pitch, or a plus-plus pitch, they would be in majors already.

I would also agree with this. I am not seeing Montero making that huge of an impact on the Yankees lineup if he was still here. Now, going forward, that is a better argument. However, going forward, you have to also evaluate whether Pineda and Campos turn out to be anything as well. It is all too early to evaluate that thing from January. Wait for another time.

Not much excitement in the SALLY LEAGUE homer hitting contest. Sanchez wasn’t selected to participate and Austin withdrew. It was alright, nd the set-up was unusual. The second stage of the competion takes place right after batting practice, tommorro, before the game. Top 4 contestants in.

Are there fans that really bought the Yankees company line that Montero is Miguel Cabrera? I remember Cashman saying something along those lines, but Cashman also said once that Bubba Crosby is the CF going into the 2006 season. That was just GM speak.

On another front, is that true, just 1 RBI in last 58 ABs. If so, I am surprised by that. Interesting fact/stat.

  187. MG June 18th, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Randy, I am not delusional-since Montero’s splits against righties and lefties are so different relative to OPS (1.051 vs .610) I am willing to bet most of his catching has been while batting against left handed pitchers and that skews the data more than the position he plays.

    GF,

I have been in the trial business for a long time, albeit on the civil side. McNamee is an admitted liar. To me, Clemens is vindicated. That is how our system works. No hung jury for him. Complete acquittal. I feel it would be wrong to have a black cloud when the jury didn’t believe he lied.

    ————-

I don’t want to open up a can of worms because the topic of government, the legal system, and/or politics is forbidden in this venue for good reason.

I certainly understand your viewpoint, especially considering your own personal experiences in the field and how you earn your living.

But we both know that even though that our legal system (and country in general) is the best the world has to offer….it is still far from perfect.

Many who are actually guilty of their alleged crime – especially celebrities and those with the financial means to hire the best legal representation – have been acquitted in the past (OJ, Robert Blake, in addition to many others I can’t think of off the top of my head).

Again, I completely understand your viewpoint but the cynic in me [and, quite frankly, the realist in me) strongly believes that most Americans in the court of public opinion won’t share that viewpoint.

I do think it will be a long time before Clemens is voted in the Hall, and as blake said, the current crop of voters aren’t going to vote for him – fairly or unfairly.

Yeah, I just finished them! It sounds typical to me to have scouts disagree! LOL! It all depends on what day they watch.

My brother pitched a HS game in the rain once against a weak team & they got 2 runs from 2 errors & a HBP. The scout (Mets) was there for 3 innings & left. (He threw 95 mph in HS) The scout thought he was not destined to be a SP.

The next game was against a top opponent. A different scout (Reds) saw him strikeout 20 batters in 21 ABs. No-hitter & last guy fouled out to 1B. (They played a 7-inning game.) That scout raved about him. LOL!

My year prepared a portfolio and prototypes for new NHS nurses’ uniforms, and Volcom commissioned a younger perspective on women’s sportswear. Wide, spreading canopies can fill gutters with spring and fall debris and even grow under roof tile or shingles, compromising roofing. Aggressive root systems can invade sanitary systems and foundations.
