Yankees lineup: No surprises
Vin Mercogliano here from Citi Field for the finale of this weekend’s Subway Series. I’m incredibly excited for the stellar pitching matchup we have slated for tonight with CC Sabathia and RA Dickey. I’ll have pregame notes up as soon as I can, but Joe Girardi’s press conference isn’t until 6:15 p.m.
1. Jeter, SS
2. Granderson, CF
3. A-Rod, 3B
4. Cano, 2B
5. Teixeira, 1B
6. Swisher, RF
7. Ibanez, LF
8. Stewart, C
9. Sabathia, LHP

I was kind of hoping we wouldn’t face Dickey tonight. Only because I would like to see how long he can continue his unearned run streak. Now of course I want the Yankees to put up a 10 spot.
Can’t see Italy beating Germany especially after playing 120 minutes. Buffon will have to stand on his head to keep the Germans at bay.
Portugal-Spain will be interesting. The way Ronaldo is playing, Portugal might be able to pull the upset.
well, maybe i’ve been smokin the dickey pipe, but i’ll be happy if we get 2 off dickey and 2 more off the bp and win 4-2
Tyler…….I’m playing Portugal for the upset……Germany is the best team I’ve seen in this tourney…..However they’ve been known to cough it up when it counts…….
And the personal catcher crap continues.
Pat-
Schweinstegger might be out with injury but the Germans are so loaded that they will probably be fine. It won’t be a walk in the park but I think they’ll beat the Italians something like 2-1.
Spain really haven’t looked great this tournament but they haven’t been threatened too much either. Portugal are interesting. That team has more quality players than just Ronaldo but they kind of reflect how he’s playing… and he’s been fantastic recently. An interesting subplot will be the Barcelona President comments of Ronaldo being the 12th best player in the world behind Barcelona’s starting 11. A lot of the Barcelona guys are on Spain so that will be interesting to see if Ronaldo has any added motivation there.

Stallone could put together a team and kick the Germans back into the stoneage.
Talking about Stallone, who in the world approved the making of the Expendables 2?
i like the personal catcher thing. they both know which day cc pitches and can plan around that. you have to sit your catcher at some point, why not have it set by the rotation and do it when you have your ace throwing?
…and stewart has been pretty good…

Not that a back issue would affect the decision.

Shame
Yeah, Martin is hurting, and anyway, I like Stewie.
Who cares.
It was one thing when you were taking out a bat like Posada’s so Molina could catch AJ.
Now that was something to be up in arms over.
Stewart’s been everything you could ask for in a backup catcher. Good defense and a few timely hits… I remember all the hatred he was getting around here after trading Kontos and sending down Cervelli. He’s been a good find.
GB……..That was one of Sly’s best movies I thought……..Michael Caine was outstanding
We have two good backup catchers.
Dickey has been great most of the season but it isn’t like the Yankees are facing Sandy Koufax or Bob Gibson tonight.
I look for CC to throw a gem, he is about ready to shut a team down completely…

Pat, I only vaguely remember that movie The Special Services (entertainmen Section) brought the movie out so we could watch it. I expected to see Stallone pop out of the shower with a machine gun.
Stewart is a huge upgrade over Cervelli, that was a good pickup…
Seems like the Red Sox got absolutely nothing for Youkilis…I honestly would have kept him. He doesn’t make enough money to dump for salary sake. The only question is how would he have taken to being a bench player.
I don’t see the upside at all for the Red Sox organization.

Mets are heavily left-handed. Obviously, that’s good for a front-line LHP pitcher who already can get anybody out.
MG…..What’s making Hickey tough is the game has never really seen a floater like his…….He throws what appears to be a hybrid floater……Harder to square up because of the changes in speed……Have to say, he looks tough and it could be a long night…Yanks need to get into the Mets pen in order to improve their chances to win tonight…….

I like “Stewie’s” stroke better, any way.
MLB Network just broke into the Dbacks-Cubs game and Wade Miley is pitching, he really looks like Andy Pettitte out there on the mound.
He’s about ready to blow away David DeJesus with two men on. DeJesus is hitting .212 with RISP, I guess Bret is right about his fitting right in with the Yankees

Pat M, he certainly has been dominant this year but it’s tough to believe he will be lights out like this the rest of the season-I would agree that the Yankees need to get to the Mets ‘pen and scratch out a few runs for CC.
Mason Williams with a solo homer to left center. Wind aided.
Mitchell was doing well until the 5th inning, though his control was off.
Raining now with lightning and high winds. Game delay.
Stewart definitely has a better swing when facing a knuckleballer. Martin’s swing-for-the-fences approach wouldn’t work.
As the guy’s have stated, the key is being selective tonight. That’s tough against a knuckleballer, but they have to balance patience with going after their pitch. Problem is, Dickey’s throwing it with such incredible control. Good match up tonight.
Dickey should be walking people, hopefully the Yankees are prepared to take walks tonight and not swinging out of their cleats for homers.
*should be walking people, but isnt bc he’s pitching against the loser NL.
The key to tonight’s game might end up being how well we run the bases.. if we can capitalize on a passed ball or wild pitch..
I think the key may be luck with BABIP.
Good news, Buchholz was placed on DL with intestinal bleeding. He supposedly needs 10-14 days to recover, but my hope is that the bleeding reappears

You win “Worst Comment On The Night” unless that’s sarcasm
Glorying in a man’s illness is disgusting.
Stierlin Castro just ole’d a hot shot with the bases loaded and no one out in the 8th inning, if he is playing with that little intensity it is no surprise the Cubbies are losing patience with him.
Red Sox did OK in the Youk trade. They had to get rid of him for a promising young bat (must be nice). He always had that hang dog look about him, and who knows, he may have been the clubhouse snitch that divided the team.
The Sox still have a potent offense when Ellsbury and Crawford return. Their pitching staff is mediocre on a good day, sO they’ll have to slug their way to a wild card. They can probably do that.

Um, its not sarcasm. Who here doesnt want that thief to suffer extraordinary amounts of pain?
After having the Italians scare me to death, a smooth ride tonight would be appreciated (stakes are not high, but all the same…).
While I would understand if the match today were a BBC broadcast, I take issue with the two ESPN Brit announcers treating it like it was for an England-centric audience. If it were the BBC, then all the little cute “inside” perspectives on the English side would have made sense. As it was, they weren’t disguising very well that they were hopeful for England throughout.

————————————-
He’s only 22 and is already a .300 + hitter but he has had some awful moments this year. I know he was in trouble for assault or something along those lines in the offseason… he needs to mature because he’s an important piece of the Cubs rebuild.
I think the key to winning is scoring more runs than the other team. Sort of like they have been for more than a month.
I have always liked the way Youk played baseball, if he was a Yankee he would have been unbelievably popular in New York because of that intensity plus his ethnic background.
Even so, shouldnt you all know my M.O. by now? Yes, I despise every boston athlete and wish them death by inordinate amounts of suffering. So what. Thats who I am and always will be.

There honestly aren’t many good American soccer announcers so you’re going to have a lot of English announcers on ESPN.. I didn’t think the two were that biased but they are more familiar with the English side that’s for sure
Today is Minka Kelly’s 32nd Birthday. I hope she got her souvenir basket from the Captain. I guess she deserves it for being with Jeter the longest….

JAP & Fem – Glad to see we agree on yet another important matter in sports!!
Fem – The games have been on at a lot of bars in downtown NYC and Hoboken but none in particular that I’m partial too. I’ve been catching bits and pieces in NY when I’m on my lunch breaks.

Shame, if only we rooted for the same hockey team…
Thanks. I am looking for soccer-oriented places rather than generic sports bars. I watched one of Italy’s World Cup games a few years ago in a Taormina hotel bar. That was a trip. Another year I watched an Italia World Cup game in a DC Italian restaurant with a great spread of Italian food and a bunch of non-English speaking Italians. Last year, we watched the World Cup Final in a Spanish restaurant with a big screen and bountiful paella and Sangria. This year I am in NJ on Thursday, so trying to find a similar experience. Good pizza and a big screen would work. Italia needs all the help it can get.
I see that C.’s “not personal” catcher is catching him, as per usual…

.
They should have done some homework on the Italian team, whom they spoke of in the vaguest of generalities. Like I said, if it were the BBC, this would make sense…
In any case, glad to escape Fox tonight. That split screen Robinson Cano had to share with Sheen was really my limit. Didn’t work – I’m not watching the guy’s show
Johnny Damon is a rare exception, but I despised him and wished him ill following 2004. Turns out he’s actually a decent guy. Tyler, please dont try to sell that. No Yankee could possibly be friends with Josh Beckett. No player in the NBA aside from his teammates could possibly be friends with Kevin Garnett, the dirtiest and scummiest human being in the NBA by far. Same goes for a load of other players.
Tyler Clippard will remain the closer when storen returns.
32.1 innings,15 hits,1.95 era,0.90 whip,.136 baa,and 27 years old.
Absolutely sick numbers.

do you think they have any chance against Germany? They dominated possession against England but they are going to have to convert some chances because Germany is explosive…
” I take issue with the two ESPN Brit announcers treating it like it was for an England-centric audience. If it were the BBC, then all the little cute “inside” perspectives on the English side would have made sense.”
It likely was for an England-centric audience. Latin viewers had the choice of Spanish-language broadcasts. The majority of ESPN’s viewership today tuned in to root for David Beckham.
Also, ESPN did try to get an Italian player to provide balance in the booth, but they couldn’t find anyone who wasn’t implicated in the most recent Serie A match-fixing scandal.
Noesi finally pitches a good game and he’s still on the hook for a 2-0 loss. 6 innings, 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts, picked off a runner and was 2-2 at the plate.
Maybe Ibanez should be batting cleanup tonight. He has had good numbers vs the old Dickey. What is different about the new Dickey who hasn’t lost since 4/30
http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/...../ra-dickey
……………….
Tyler, I’m not an aficianado, by any stretch. I guess they have a chance, but this has got to be the least skilled Italian national team I’ve seen in a while.
Historically, Germany always has had speed on the wing, and one thing we seem able to do is defend well outside. The Italians, even when they have a great offense, always play not to lose. This group might actually need to play that way to succeed, and my uneducated guess is, that would be their best shot against a high-powered German team.
What’s your take?
……..
Tyler, yeah it is stupid, but Im not sure where youre getting your info on Garnett. He is hated around the league because he’s a fake tough guy thats dirty and runs his mouth constantly, even insulting can.cer patients.
ESPN Sunday night baseball program really sucks.
They have to choose 8pm.
JAP-
Yeah I’m far from an expert also but I just don’t see that German team losing… they are loaded. Maybe if Italy does play their tight style and capitalize on 1-2 counter attacks they can pull it out.
The women from back in the day and other “old time regulars” will never return until that stalker and degenerate is removed permanently from here. He’s the major reason they left.
Mo-
I don’t have a “specific” source but listen to guys talk about him. They have a respect for him. He’s very, very intense on the court and that sometimes boils over into him doing stupid stuff. That’s definitely true. Look, I don’t like the guy but every reporter/player I’ve heard talk about him gives him respect even if they want to punch his face on the court. Lebron gave him a lot of credit after their series.
GB7,
Hear, hear!
There are fanatics about the Azzurri all around the world who are not even Italian. Assuming an Anglophile audience doesn’t fly.
Spain 3-1 in final.
Germany? Not this time.
England’s fate is always losing qtr final in PK.
Considering Youkalis probably hasnt changed his Red Socks since he came up its probably best for everyone that hes switching to white.
Tyler, for the Italians, no Skillaccis or Rossis or Baggios on this team. No Maldinis, for that matter.
Giving credit for and respecting his play is one thing, he’s a good talented player, and always has been. Opponents dont like him, though, because he’s scum. We can just agree to disagree. Ray Allen is a classy player. People across the league respect and like him.

I’ll have to pay more attention to league play. Whenever these tournaments happen, I’m reminded how much I like soccer. I hope we pull an upset
I guess I answered my question why the new Dickey is better than the old one.
“As Dickey has thrown his knuckleball harder (70.6 mph in 2008 to 77.0 mph in 2012), he’s gotten better at throwing it for strikes (43 percent ball rate and 43 percent swing rate to 31 percent ball rate and 53 percent swing rate). And the number of whiffs has almost doubled, from 7.7 percent to 15 percent.”

Gumbs started at SS today for Charleston. Could be an interesting thing to follow in the coming weeks. He is one of the best talents when it comes to potential if he reaches it.
I believe Gumbs started out as a SS.
Be interested to see the fallout if Youkalis starts to hit and Middlebrooks hits a struggle period…….I think they needed to deal him and its the right move ….but short term it could come back and bite them a bit.

He played 6 games in 2010 in GCL at SS. Since then, he has played just at 2b and DH. It is a nice little development if this is something more longterm.
If Gumbs can play SS physically then its a smart move to do that….Culver’s bat isnt really progressjng much at all as of yet….
blake, I don’t think Youkilis will never hit again, that’s for sure.
And Gumbs has a very nice upside, one of the best in the system, IF he can reach it.

You might not want to give that award out already. I would bet that there is going to be more crazier things said than that during the game thread.
Youk is getting old.I doubt he all of a sudden hits like old.
Also, they save money, and get something back while middlebrooks is as good,or a better option.
Nice move, after the several bad ones recently made.
I’ve wondered if they might not try Feliz at SS. He’s got range and a great arm.
When I saw Culver-Gumbs, they were pretty slick. Worlds better than anything in Trenton/SWB, and that was short season.
The Red Sox did not pay 5.5 million to get rid of Youkilis. They were paying him that anyhow. They actually saved 2 million dollars by trading him, which is nothing to sneeze at. Maybe they should have tried to get a lower level prospect or two instead, but saving 2 million isn’t bad.
Yeah, I don’t think Gumbs’ upside is going to sneak up on anyone.

Youk is only 33 if he can heal he might have quite a few productive years ahead of him. I wouldnt be surprised is someday he becomes be the fragile utility infielder who plays really well when he’s heathy to fill Eric Chavez’ role with the Yankees. It would be really strange rooting for him instead of against him but its happened before with Boggs and Damon

It’s bad if they don’t do anything with that 2 million dollars. Youkilis is having a better season than Lillibridge! It looks like that guy cannot hit at all. Stewart’s stats are pretty unimpressive, didn’t see a scouting report on the guy but he has a 6.00 ERA and a low strike out rate. And the Sox bullpen is pretty good on last check.
Youkilis is only 33, he’s not on his death bed yet. He wasn’t that expensive. And look no further than Derek Jeter as guy’s declared dead and gone, or Jorge Posada, who had his moments last year (and in the post season). Youk’s upside is far higher than the guy’s the acquired, and he wasn’t that expensive.
What a crock. Nothing wrong with you except your believing that shock remarks will get you attention and your belief that that attention means somebody likes you. You’re nothing more than a jerk.
“They actually saved 2 million dollars by trading him,”
They still have to pay the two guys they received about 500 each, so I guess that brings it down to a mil saved. That’s not enough savings to justify the move. It’s obvious that the Sox just wanted to dump him.
Oh be quiet GB7. I see 2 therapists weekly in an attempt to get better and better myself. 80% of Americans have some form of mental illness, so Im not ashamed of it. And I say nothing for shock value or attention. Whatever I say, I truly believe. And if my beliefs make me a jerk, so be it. Maybe one day Ill change, but until then, Ive got to accept who I am.
RadioKev,
It’s not quite that simple though. Youkilis clearly has declined and the way Middlebrooks is hitting he has made it impossible for the Red Sox not to play him. And since Ortiz DH’s there was simply nowhere for Youkilis to play. If they kept him & just played him every now & then, Youk may have become a huge distraction and it could have become a major headache.
Also, if they kept him the rest of this year, he has a 13 million dollar team option next year. How could they justify picking that up when he will be 34 next year and his production has slipped so much? And Middlebrooks would still be there next season, still way younger and probably better. I’m not saying I would have made THIS specific trade, but I agree with the premise of getting something for him & saving some cash. I would have tried for a couple under the radar type Single A guys instead of Lillibridge & Stewart, but that’s just me. It was just a tough situation and they did what they felt they had to.
We want more says – hang in there!, …….it will get better!!!
This kid Saxon Butler is off to a smoking start to his pro career. 5 doubles, 6 RBI, 1 homer and .444 in his first 5 games.
theRealkevin,
I don’t know, the only argument I see is if Youk would have become bitter playing off of the bench. I don’t know if there was any indication that he would, but barring him requesting a trade, I think this was a bad move.
If they guy’s the Sox acquired continue to play like they have, it’s a talent downgrade. I also don’t think Youkilis has “clearly declined.” His OPS last year (a down year) was .833. He’s been way too good in his career to just fall off a cliff like this and suddenly become a bad player. It usually doesn’t work that way.
