Sabathia going on the DL

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 27, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

CC Sabathia is going on the disabled list after feeling pain in his left adductor muscle. He felt it in his last start and waited until after yesterdays bullpen to tell the team.

Freddy Garcia will start on Friday.

Sabathia is expected to be back immediately after the all-star break and should miss two starts.

    Panic panic panic.

Not a huge deal if thats all it is…..hopefully it is

Que. . . you can never have enough pitching.

  3. There Will Never Be Another Mo June 27th, 2012 at 11:25 am

    queue – sorry

  4. Chip June 27th, 2012 at 11:27 am

Honestly – I know Garcia’s been better in long relief but I would rather see Warren, Mitchell or Phelps get the start.

Exactly how was the team medical staff supposed to know Sabathia was hurt if he doesn’t complain or even mention it? Look into their crystal ball or read the tea leaves in the bottom of the cup?

    ————————

I dunno.. its sort of like saying ‘how was the medical staff supposed to know Pineda was having arm trouble when his fastball wasn’t there since he didn’t complain about it.’

CC has had some mechanical issues all year so far.. no one noticed or thought it might be him compensating for another issue? I’m not saying that’s the case, but it is that far outside of the realm of possibility that someone should be eying that stuff?

This move is probably because they’re still trying to trade Garcia but I agree.

I guess now we’ll have to depend on Freddy to pop Youkilis with 88 mph heat

  8. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 11:30 am

Well, it’s a new record, I suppose. Only ten minutes after the news hits, the conspiracies have started and the finger pointing about team incompetence begins.

  9. Villa Nova-Ya June 27th, 2012 at 11:30 am

    Oh, for crying out loud.

CC is a veteran. If he doesn’t say something is wrong, then no one looks for anything to be wrong. He felt pain in his start and didn’t say anything until his bullpen (I guess hoping it would be less).

Sick and tired of the “oh, the Yankees are so bad at managing a team, have no idea what they’re doing,” blah, blah, blah.

    That being said. DARNIT!

I blame C.C.’s injury on the way the Yankees handled Joba. Curse you Joba handlers!!

  11. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2012 at 11:32 am

Wang, Hughes, Feliciano.. rushing Arod back last year when we had a comfortable lead.. Gardner’s injury.. I just haven’t liked it.

I’m not placing all of the blame on the medical staff.. I’m allowed to ask questions.

    *********

I prefer to see my Yankees win their game and the starter pitch past the third or fourth inning.

  13. Warning Track Power June 27th, 2012 at 11:33 am

C.C. on the DL, missing at least 2 starts will really test the pitching depth.
Guys like Wade and Freddy Garcia will be needed to pitch well or else one or both might
be looking at a demotion or trade.

  14. Purenyyankee June 27th, 2012 at 11:33 am

God forbid we call up a kid from Scranton to pitch. Nope. Only the Yankees spoon feed all the kids in the minor leagues. Give one of these guys a shot Cashman!

    ————

    Hey there strawman, it’s been a while….

Hughes didn’t have any velo last year and how long did it take to figure out what the hell was wrong with him? Pineda in ST? Feliciano waiting until the end of a season to get surgery after failing to rehab it properly?

I’m not saying its alllll related to the med staff. I’m sure they do a great job overall… but are we not allowed to point this out? Just add it to the list of stuff we can’t talk about at LoHud.

  16. Bo knows June 27th, 2012 at 11:35 am

There is actually a silver lining in this.

CC gets a rest, a chance to showcase Freddy, maybe bring up Mitchell or Warren to piggyback Freddy who won’t go many innings. Phelps is still getting stretched out.

  17. 4 NYY June 27th, 2012 at 11:35 am

I wonder if this is the reason for the absent 95-96 mph FB ?

  18. Hassey June 27th, 2012 at 11:35 am

curious to see whether the 2012 version of Freddy throws just the right speed for the 2012 version of Adam Dunn. He can still make people look foolish, or we may see a 500 foot HR

  19. Villa Nova-Ya June 27th, 2012 at 11:36 am

    Oh stop over-reacting.

No one said you couldn’t talk about anything you wanted.

And I’m allowed to gripe every once in a while.

As I said yesterday – it’s relentless, the amount of criticism this team gets from its own fans.

I think lots of teams have these problems. We’re more focused on the instances when it happens to the Yankees because, well because that’s the team we follow. But I think I remember the Red Sox having similar issues with Ellsbury, Beckett and other guys. I know that Met fans were up in arms over the way that team handled injuries for a long time too.

I just think it’s the nature of the beast.

  21. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 11:37 am

    Marc Carig?@MarcCarig

Warren most likely to be called up. That’s not final though, Cashman says.

  22. The Return of Stoneburner June 27th, 2012 at 11:37 am

Toronto Blue Jays are calling – they would like to trade their injuries for the Yankees’ injuries.

  23. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2012 at 11:39 am

Villa – It was just my first thought.

  24. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 11:41 am

So much for the Yankees not being observant.

    Bryan Hoch?@BryanHoch

Sabathia strained his groin in the fourth inning of his start against the Mets. Told team after throwing a bullpen yesterday.

That’s probably true.. and a completely fair response. I know other pitchers have had the velo loss too, we’ve just had it happen to 4 guys in two seasons (Hughes, Garcia, Pineda, CC).

  26. Chip June 27th, 2012 at 11:44 am

Eduardo Nunez, Claudio Custodio and DJ Mitchell to the Cubs for DeJesus and LaHair.

    Yay or nay?

  27. 86w183 June 27th, 2012 at 11:45 am

No question this injury could have contributed to slight decrease in velocity and command. Can be a good thing for a workhorse who throws as many innings as he goes to get a couple of weeks off.

I guess Warren makes sense since he can give them length and was good in his last outing. He threw on Sunday, so he should be good for Friday.

  28. Jerkface June 27th, 2012 at 11:45 am

Me thinks Girardi had Joe Torre’d Cory Wade. You compare the innings logged already this season vs the previous 2 seasons, and it’s easy to see why the guy is fading fast. Lotta talk around here about stretching guys out in order to become a SP. But the RP’s just get thrown onto the fire time-after-time till their arms fall off.

Cory Wade was injured 2 years ago. And the season before that he received the injury that knocked him out for 2010. In 2011 he split time between the majors and the minors.

Here is Cory Wade’s days of rest before pitching the past 5 appearances:

    1 1 1 3 4

You literally have no leg to stand on with this argument because you don’t understand what normal usage is, and you cannot seem to understand how the former usage of Wade / Logan was irregular.

  29. DONNYBROOK June 27th, 2012 at 11:46 am

Wish these “writers” would just say groin. A hip ailment\injury sounds alarm bells after A-Rod.

  30. Jerkface June 27th, 2012 at 11:47 am

Eduardo Nunez, Claudio Custodio and DJ Mitchell to the Cubs for DeJesus and LaHair.

Why do we need DeJesus AND LaHair? DeJesus is a bum.

  31. 86w183 June 27th, 2012 at 11:47 am

Seems a little light to me. LeHair can really hit, though I have no idea if he can play the OF. Would have to add Laird at a minimum.

  32. Warning Track Power June 27th, 2012 at 11:49 am

I don’t really have a problem with C.C. “hiding” this injury until he threw a bullpen. He might have dismissed the discomfort and figured he would be just fine.
Players are tough. They take the field not always at 100%. Once C.C. threw some pitches, he realized the injury was probably a little more serious and so of course he relayed the info
    to the team.
I don’t have a problem with how this was handle by C.C.
Freddy is the next logical guy to take C.C.’s rotation spot. He might get 1 start and maybe one of the kids will get the 2nd start before C.C. returns.

  33. blake June 27th, 2012 at 11:50 am

Yea i dont see a 2 week break in the middle of the season as a bad thing at all….so lkng as hes 100% after it….

    ——————-

Actually when I suggested this I thought DeJesus only had a one year deal with a team option for 2013 – didn’t realize it was a 2 year deal – that does change my thinking on it. Though if you get him and LaHair then you don’t have to see Raul Ibanez and his glove in LF or his .300 OBP at the plate.

    Unrelated question —-

With Scranton under renovations, any chance of/interest in a Lo-Hud gathering in Trenton? Charleston? Tampa?

  36. UnKnown June 27th, 2012 at 11:53 am

Stone burner welcome back. The twit that caused you to take a break for awhile hasn’t been posting a lot lately, so hopefully this place will continue to be drama free like it has been of late. Its been nice. Enjoy…

    ————-

I’m not sure how light it is – LeHair’s not exactly a kid – he’s 29. Giving them a couple of solid prospects in Mitchell and Nunez and a decent kid with some upside.

As for Laird – he’s not even a throw in at this point. He hasn’t hit above AA in what – 2 years?

  38. blake June 27th, 2012 at 11:54 am

I can think of 4 players in the Cubs entire organization that Id have interest in……dejesis and Lahair arent really on the list.

  39. Jerkface June 27th, 2012 at 11:55 am

    I’m not sure how light it is – LeHair’s not exactly a kid – he’s 29.

But he is good and under team control. And in his prime. I think the cubs would want to get a nice haul for him.

  40. Hassey June 27th, 2012 at 11:55 am

Can you imagine how many White Castle sliders CC is going to pound, now that he has all this free time?

  41. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 11:56 am

    Yanks 19 signed picks

    http://ht.ly/bRzWV

  42. PacoDooley June 27th, 2012 at 11:56 am

The reaction here does not match the injury. His adductor muscle is basically in his groin, which is not an uncommon problem in pitchers (see Mr Clemens) and isn’t an arm issue that we would worry about. Better he takes off some time now and recovers before it affects his delivery and really does screw up his arm.

  43. blake June 27th, 2012 at 11:57 am

Glad the Yanks acted quickly on this with CC….no reason to.chance it ….shut it down and rest for two weeks then come back strong for the 2nd half…..could be a blessing in disguise

  44. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 11:59 am

There isn’t enough time for Dejesus to learn how to hit or play the outfield.

  45. austinmac June 27th, 2012 at 11:59 am

CC will be fine. If he had to have this, now is a good a time as any. I wonder if Garcia can pitch many innings as he hasn’t thrown much in a long time. Keep him where he has been effective and let’s take a look at Warren.

  46. YankeesFanMan June 27th, 2012 at 11:59 am

Losing Sabathia sucks, but the pitching staff has been really good lately so I have faith they can take a few weeks without him.

  47. blake June 27th, 2012 at 12:03 pm

This will be CCs first missed start since April of 2006……incredible.

  48. austinmac June 27th, 2012 at 12:04 pm

Hensley is still unsigned. I thought he would be an easy and quick sign. Now, I hope he signs at all. I think they are trying to get him to go under slot, and he is unwilling. No info, just my guess.

    Has anyone any word?

  49. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 12:06 pm

If they are serious about bringing Warren up as a replacement, the curious thing will be the corresponding move to get him on the 40 man roster.

  50. blake June 27th, 2012 at 12:08 pm

I think Hensley will sign….hes probably just holding out to see if the Yanks have enough left to go oger a bit…..he needs to get going though if he wants to get to the Bronx by 2014 like he says.

  51. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2012 at 12:08 pm

    Mac,

Can only assume that there’s money issue, but, can’t likely be that far apart.
