Let’s see, the Yankees have a “starting catcher” in Martin who has a back acting up. He of the .200 or so average for the last 8 baseball months, and what exactly would be the reasons behind NY’s hesitancy in putting Martin on the DL in order for him to get his back a little rest?

Does Cervelli suck so bad that he can’t come up for two weeks to spell Martin?

Isn’t Cervelli on the 40 man? Or does NY want to carry 1 catcher who is healthy?

  2. Mike_Boston June 28th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Many of these German players are from Bayern Munich, this would make 2nd place finishes for them in the Champions league, German league and a major failure at the Euros, all within 2 months from each other. Not to mention 3rd in the last World Cup. Ouch!

  3. Nick in SF June 28th, 2012 at 4:18 pm

These Germans are not all sunshine and smiles.

  4. Warning Track Power June 28th, 2012 at 4:18 pm

    Yankee 21
Cervelli is on the 40 man. So is Romine, but he’s on the DL

One of two things is happening: Martin’s bad back is not serious enough to send him to
the DL and lose her services for 2 weeks or the Yankees don’t feel like Cervelli has played
well enough or earned a return trip to the Bronx, only to be sent back down when
Martin is eligible to come off the DL

  5. blake June 28th, 2012 at 4:20 pm

Speaking of ill timed injuries with Banuelos…..how about Romine’s ill timed injury?

  6. Nick in SF June 28th, 2012 at 4:25 pm

No doubt the Giants would take Zack Wheeler back with hindsight, but at the time I don’t think they thought losing him was such an awful price to pay, based on things I read and heard from local media. Someone in the org. said that, basically, they had a few others like him in the system.

But of course they didn’t get all they expected from Beltran, he started out very slowly and then went on the shelf for a while. He did come on at the end, but it was too little, too late.

    Blake-

The Yankees are 46-28. If they play .500 the rest of the way over the remaining 88 games they win 100 games. This might effect the Yankees thinking on making any major moves, especially bringing in rentals that would suck the quality prospects the Yankees have-dry.

I don’t expect any Garzas, Greinkes, Hamels, or even Dempsters on the Yankee horizon.

  9. blake June 28th, 2012 at 4:31 pm

I don’t really blame the Giants for going for a repeat….and pitching was their strength….Timmy hadn’t fallen off the world then……they still have Cain and Bumgardner for a long time…..but still that’s the chance you take…..you go all in to win a title and if you don’t win it you’re often left with nothing.

  10. Ys Guy June 28th, 2012 at 4:31 pm

cervelli’s not ripping up aaa while playing almost every day (.642 OPS). and i certainly hope he’s worked on improving his defense while he’s gettting the chance to play because it was awful last year on the yankees. i hope he’s using his playing time to improve and not sulking.

  11. blake June 28th, 2012 at 4:32 pm

“The Yankees are 46-28. If they play .500 the rest of the way over the remaining 88 games they win 100 games.”

    90 games ;)

if all goes to plan then no I don’t either…..hopefully it will

  13. Yankee Trader June 28th, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Sorry-they win 90 games and miss the playoffs. Go full steam ahead and make that major trade. Too wrapped up in soccer. :(

  14. GreenBeret7 June 28th, 2012 at 4:36 pm

Nice day for AJ Burnett. now 9-2. 6.2 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks 7 strikeouts. He’s won 5 straight, won 5 games in A month, both for the first time. Wish he had done this as a Yankee, but, you could never question his effort or desire to help the team.

  15. luis June 28th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

    Good afternoon everyone,

    About the previous thread:

On Garza, I don´t think we need him at this point. His prize would be too high as well. We can´t afford to gut the farm for a pitcher. The damage for doing so would take years to be repaired, especially with the budget limitations.

FTR I do think that Nova can and will become better than Garza over time as well. He has the make up that very few pitchers have.

Yes, we need a bat…An OF would be nice or a 3 baseman with upside. The problem is that the chip we had for that is in the West coast.

  16. Ys Guy June 28th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

90 wins could put them in the playoffs. boston (and tampa’s) pace puts them at 86.3 wins this season.

  17. GreenBeret7 June 28th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

So, how many players from the systm are you willing to gamble for somebody that didn’t want to pitch in NY a couple of years ago? No thanks.

  18. yankeefeminista June 28th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

    Forza Azzurri!

  19. Hassey June 28th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

ironic that the beating the Yankees laid on RA Dickey may have opened a lane for AJ to start for the NL in the AS Game

  20. luis June 28th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

I am happy for AJ…But i am also happy that i don´t have to take Maalox every time he takes the mound anymore…I do agree that he always tried his best

  21. Nick in SF June 28th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

    “90 games ;)

Why did you have to correct his math??? I was getting excited about cashing in my Yanks over 93.5 wins!

  22. luis June 28th, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Hi YF….Glad to hear that you are happy for Italy!

  23. Nick in SF June 28th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Congrats to the Azzurri supporters and/or bettors.

That goal for the Germans was a big help to me.

Hi Luis. I am triumphantly wearing my Paolo Rossi jersey! Are you finally home?

  27. luis June 28th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

YES! I arrived late last night…I would have loved to go north to NY…But couldn´t :( Too much work….Hopefully i will be able to go in August for the M´s series.

A Yankees win tonight would be a nice way to round out my day..

  29. Yankee Trader June 28th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

    Ciaio Luis-

Nice to see an Italian win!
I’m not in on any FA that will cost major prospects as well as perhaps one of Nova or Hughes, for a 3 month plus rental, only to lose them to FA, signed by a team that can easily stay within the confines of the 2014 LT limits of 189M.

  37. Ys Guy June 28th, 2012 at 4:54 pm

dickey has 2 more wins and an era more that a full run better than aj’s, a better whip and a better opp baa..

nice for aj that he’s able to put it together in a no-pressure environment, but he’s not starting in place of dickey.

  38. LGY June 28th, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Is GB just directing his anger at invisible posters squatting on his lawn or is there a pitcher someone wants the Yanks to trade for?

  39. Yankee Trader June 28th, 2012 at 4:56 pm

    MTU-
Thanks for reminding me of my blunder!! :)

One interesting matchup will be Friday night with Warren vs Jose Quintana who, the Yankees didn’t give a 40 man roster spot, he became a FA, signed this offseason by the WS, and hasn’t issued a walk to 97 straight hitters. Also averages giving up 0.5 homers a game. The Yankees have won one game without hitting a homer-correct? Can they win a game by hitting half a homer :)

  40. MTU June 28th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

    YT-

Warren has the opportunity of a lifetime.

I hope he makes the most of it.

I like guys who command the strike zone but my money is on Warren.

Speaking of guys who command the strike zone- Phelps.

What will Freddy give us ?

No room on the 25 man without DLing Martin. The plan may be to send Warren down after his start tomorrow and bring up Cervelli for the nex 4 games then either send Cervelli back down for the new pitcher or DL Martin.

    Isn’t .5 of a homer a double?

  46. Tarheel In NYC June 28th, 2012 at 5:06 pm

Wow! Nadal’s out in the 2nd round!

That should open up that half of the draw for Murray or maybe Tsonga.

Martin won’t go on the DL in order to clear a spot for him, but at least Cervelli has this:

  51. austinmac June 28th, 2012 at 5:32 pm

    Nick,

I believe the Germans will claim these free spending countries have been overspending on sports while Germany is, in reality, funding the team. Thus, it was a German sponsored team entitling them to go to the finals.
