TIME/TV: 3:10 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network
WEATHER: Nothing like celebrating the Fourth by watching a baseball game under a roof.
UMPIRES: HP Mike Estabrook, 1B Rob Drake, 2B Joe West, 3B Sam Holbrook
FIRST AT THIRD: This is the first time Jayson Nix has started a game at third base this season. He’s had two starts at second base, six at shortstop and 10 in left field.
STRONG START, ROUGH FINISH: The Yankees have scored in the first inning in four of their last five games. They’ve gone 1-3 in those games.
IN THE END: The Yankees are 17-9 in series finales this season and have won 10 of their last 12. The Yankees?have won their last six finales on the road and?are 1-2 this season in games when trying to avoid a series sweep.
HAPPY FOURTH: The Yankees are playing Tampa Bay on July 4th for the first time. The Yankees are 28-28 on the Fourth of July in the Expansion Era and have lost their last three road games on the Fourth of July. The Yankees are playing on the road on the Fourth of July for the second straight year, the first time they have done that in consecutive seasons since 1996-97.
UPDATE, 3:46 p.m.: Phelps strikes out the side in the second inning.
UPDATE, 3:47 p.m.: Looks like Keppinger is hurt, maybe on the HBP. Brooks Conrad now playing third for the Rays.
UPDATE, 4:17 p.m.: Rodriguez goes down looking and Price has a no hitter through four innings. Phelps has a no hitter going into the bottom of the fourth.
UPDATE, 4:33 p.m.: The Rays first hit is a two-out RBI single by Sean Rodriguez. Phelps has struck out eight, but he’s also walked three and hit two. It was a leadoff walk in the fourth that really hurt him. He’s thrown 78 pitches through four innings, and that might be all the Yankees get from him.
UPDATE, 4:40 p.m.: Yankees finally get a hit, but Swisher struck out and Jones hit into a double play. Price is through five scoreless, Rays leading 1-0.
UPDATE, 4:42 p.m.: Phelps back out to start the fifth. Rapada and Eppley up in the pen.
UPDATE, 4:50 p.m.: Rapada has been terrific for the Yankees, but he does walk guys quite a bit. He just gave Pena a free pass, now Eppley is in to face B.J. Upton with two on and one out.
UPDATE, 4:54 p.m.: Looked like Martin had a chance to throw out Johnson stealing third, but Nix didn’t get to the bag in time for Martin to even make a throw.
UPDATE, 4:59 p.m.: Cody Eppley. Biggest surprise of the season? He just got back-to-back strikeouts to strand runners at second and third and get out of hte fifth inning. It’s still a 1-0 Rays lead.
UPDATE, 5:29 p.m.: Scoreless sixth for Eppley, followed by a leadoff homer by Teixeira. It’s a tied game.
UPDATE, 5:51 p.m.: Pena gets a two-run homer just inside the foul pole for a 3-1 Rays lead. It came on the first pitch of the at-bat.
UPDATE, 6:18 p.m.: Robinson Cano with a two-run single up the middle to drive in two and put the Yankees in front 4-3 (a bases-loaded walk also brought in a run this inning). Robertson is getting loose in the bullpen to handle the bottom of the eighth.
