On the verge of a crushing three-game sweep, the Yankees best player delivered a much needed win. Robinson Cano’s two-run single in the eighth inning sent the Yankees to a 4-3 win in their series finale against the Rays. The win snapped a string of nine consecutive losses at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay first baseman Carlos Pena had put the Rays in front with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, just a half inning after Mark Teixeira had tied the game with a solo home run. But former Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth walked four batters in the eighth before Jake McGee gave up Cano’s game-winning single. Rookie right-handers David Phelps and Cody Eppley combined to deliver six strong innings with 11 strikeouts for the Yankees. Dave Robertson and Rafael Soriano closed out the win with a scoreless inning apiece.
