ANGELS (48-40)

Erick Aybar SS
Albert Pujols 1B
Kendrys Morales DH
Mark Trumbo RF
Alberto Callaspo 3B
Maicer Izturis 2B

RHP Jered Weaver (10-1, 1.96)
Weaver vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network and TBS

WEATHER: It was raining earlier, but I haven’t seen a drop in about three hours. The forecast calls for possible thunderstorms, but it looks like it may hold off until later in the afternoon. It’s around 86 degrees right now, and very humid.

UMPIRES: HP Tim Welke, 1B Laz Diaz, 2B Mike Everitt, 3B Paul Schrieber

PULLING AWAY: The Yankees enter today’s game with the best record in the majors to go along with the largest division lead in MLB. With yesterday’s 5-3 win, they tied their season-high lead of eight games.

SWEEPING SENSATION: The Yankees will be looking for their eighth series sweep of the season today, which is just one shy of last year’s total. It would also mark the first their first sweep of the Angels in a series of three games or more since 2003.

COMEBACK KIDS: The Yankees lead the majors with 29 come-from-behind wins this season, with no other team having more than 25. They are on pace to have the second-highest total in team history. The franchise record of 61 come-from-behind wins was set in 2004.

(Note: I’ll be updating the action here every so often, but I’ll be much more active on Twitter. To join the conversation, follow me @vzmercogliano.)

UPDATE, 1:16 p.m.: Nova gave up back-to-back homers to Aybar and Pujols in the first to give the Angels a 2-0 lead. Neither was a cheapie, but Nova bounced back with two straight strikeouts to end the inning.

UPDATE, 1:31 p.m.: A-Rod evens the score at 2-2 with a blast over the right-center field wall in the bottom of the first. That was a very good sign, as A-Rod stayed back on the ball and put a beautiful opposite field swing on it. The homer broke a stretch of 49 at-bats without a long ball for A-Rod (and he’s not DHing!). The Yanks hit the ball hard off of Weaver in the first, with Cano lacing a single to center to tie his career-high hitting streak of 18 games.

UPDATE, 1:44 p.m.: Jeter gives the Yankees a 3-2 lead in the second on an RBI single with two outs, but he got tagged out after taking a big turn towards second to end the inning.

UPDATE, 2:50 p.m.: The Angels have retaken the lead thanks to a sac fly from Callaspo and a two-run homer from Izturis. It’s 5-3 in the sixth, in large part thanks to some sloppy play from the Yankees on the basepaths. They’ve run themselves out of an inning or two.

UPDATE, 3:04 p.m.: Nova is done after 6+ innings. He didn’t have his best stuff today, but kept things from getting completely out of hand. Chad Qualls is coming in with runners on the corners and no outs. It’s 5-4 Angels after Granderson hit a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth.

UPDATE, 3:52 p.m.: The Yankees just can’t seem to stop the bleeding. After the Angels scored three runs in the eighth, Trumbo just led off the ninth with a laser over the left field wall. It’s 10-5 Angels.

    repost:

“Great job Sori. BTW who is the genius who wanted to sign him

I think it would be I to whom you are referring?

    :D

Hey all. I did cartwheels when the Yankees signed Soriano. I wanted him so bad it hurt. And I didn’t care about the contract because I typically don’t involve myself in other peoples’ money, especially if it isn’t coming out of my pocket!

Love him, love him, love him, love him, love him.

    ***************

I’ve been MIA for a bit, partly because I needed a break away from my total disgust at the way Ron Washington plissed away another ASG, partly because I was almost apopletic about all the new stuff coming out about Penn State, and partly because I was out of town a few days.

mick, looks like we called it right on the money about the heroic “Joe Pa” didn’t we – despite all the crap we took for it. All I could think, from jump street, was that no matter what he was told, if his grandson was the one in the shower with Sandusky, his (in)actions would not have been the same. Now we find out he was up to his neck in it.

    ***************

I love Joba. These guys are almost magic. I guess I am never surprised that they come back as quickly as they do (well some of them – still waiting for poor Gardy). Ah to be young and athletic! :)

    **************

Some church business today (I’m the parish attorney – not a paying position of course – benefits in heaven, if I ever get there, ha ha :) ) Today is their annual feast. So I get to go and bake outside in the heat and humidity. Hopefully I’ll escape in time to see some of today’s game.)

    GO YANKS!!!

    GO IVAN!!!

    GO RAYS!!!

  2. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Go Nova/Vato/El hombre/El Guerrero!! Go Yankees!!

  3. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Weaver pitching today. Wish I could see the whole game. Should be a good one.

    Later.

  4. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 1:06 pm

    Let’s go, boys!

  5. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:09 pm

    Finally someone got Trout ;)

  6. CountryClub July 15th, 2012 at 1:09 pm

    Austinmac,

It aids the budget by signing them this winter by locking in their cost. The yanks will know how much money they have left to build the rest of the roster. If they wait until after 2013 season there will be a lot of moving targets going into that offseason.

  7. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:10 pm

    Damn

  8. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Welcome back Trisha. I hope all is well. Tough task today.

  9. Against All Odds July 15th, 2012 at 1:11 pm

    Ummmm wtf

  10. Jerkface July 15th, 2012 at 1:11 pm

I am at marlin park on a pilgrimmage to the Dinger Machine and Darth Vader threw out the first pitch, lefty and did not even make it to the dirt around home plate. Poor showing from the Dark Lord Of The Sith.

  11. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:11 pm

    Double damn

  12. GreenBeret7 July 15th, 2012 at 1:12 pm

    That’s not good.

  13. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Oy vey!! When is BP over.

  14. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 1:12 pm

    Right down the middle. Twice.

  15. RS July 15th, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Ump better not give Weaver those low borderline pitches.

  16. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Good way to bounce back…He needs to pitch backwards to this guys

  17. cofuzz July 15th, 2012 at 1:16 pm

    C’mon Nova. That’s enough.

  18. Uncle Ellsworth July 15th, 2012 at 1:20 pm

Over? Over? Nothing is over ’til we decide it is…

  19. RS July 15th, 2012 at 1:21 pm

Alright, so far Weaver doesn’t look impressive

  20. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:21 pm

I think Weaver is having control problems…We should take advantage of it before he settles down

  21. RS July 15th, 2012 at 1:22 pm

    There we go!

  22. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Arod!!! Gb7 Maybe you were right after all

  23. Tar July 15th, 2012 at 1:22 pm

    Alex aint no DH.

  24. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:23 pm

    ABOMB by AROD!!!!!!

  25. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:23 pm

That’s the type of homer that tells you that Arod might be getting in a roll

  26. jacksquat July 15th, 2012 at 1:24 pm

That Arod guy is washed up.

  27. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:25 pm

I agree, Luis. Power to RF…

  28. Tar July 15th, 2012 at 1:25 pm

You could see from Jeter’s AB, he was all over Weaver. It would be great to pile on early before he settles down.

  29. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Even Jeter’s out was a loud one…Come on guys

  30. GreenBeret7 July 15th, 2012 at 1:25 pm

    Weaver hasn’t fooled anybody yet

  31. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Every ball hit on the nose. Let’s get this guy now.

  32. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Spike Lee has an enchanted life…

  33. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:27 pm

I have the TBS feed…Do you guys know the pitch count on Weaver?

  34. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Arod has bailed out nova. Hope he settles down.

  35. Tar July 15th, 2012 at 1:28 pm

  37. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Weaver currently at 20 pitches with swishers 2-0 count.

  38. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:29 pm

    Hey Tar!

Good to see you around man! thanks!

  39. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Hi guys! Hi Trish! – I looked up Longfellow, thanks. Six feet under for all the complicit individuals at Penn state. Nothing worse than taking advantage of a young being . Looking forward to playing your team. Best!

  40. Tar July 15th, 2012 at 1:30 pm

    Thanks Luis

Been real busy. I will be in and out today as well.

  41. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 1:31 pm

26 pitches for Weaver after the first.

  42. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 1:32 pm

The Speedy Eephus. That’s tough .

  43. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:32 pm

We are back on the game…Nova, 123 inning…We need Weaver back in the mound quick

  44. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:33 pm

    Tar,

We need the good guys around more often than not ;)

  45. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Great play by Grandy there….Nova, keep the ball down

  46. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:35 pm

    Fb on the outside corner

  47. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:35 pm

    AROD—-25 Hrs. & 80 RBI’s… Are you satisfied?

  48. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    jackamir,

If you think contract wise….No….But he is 36 years old now, so I would say yes.

    Atta boy Nova

  49. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    There’s your quick inning, luis!

  50. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Shutdown inning on 8 pitches. Good bounce back….

  51. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Nova had a good inning…But he is leaving the ball up in the zone…I hope he adjusts

  52. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 1:39 pm

    ========================

Will have to be ! LOL

  53. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Not one single pitch has been a strike on the k zone. Chavy!!

    Tom,

He is a gentleman…He pleases the croud! ;)

  54. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:41 pm

    *crowd* that is

Glad to see Martin up there swinging ! ( and bunting ) LOL

  56. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

    Lousy bunt, Russell.

Love what Chavez brings to this team….

  57. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 1:43 pm

    Jeter hits it hard again.

  58. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:43 pm

    El Capitan!!

  59. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 1:43 pm

El Capitan!!!!! But he got fooled by the cutoff…..

  60. I Am Winning July 15th, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Rare base-running blunder by Jeter. I will trade that for the run any day of the week against Weaver that’s for sure!

  61. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Ok, we got the lead….Nova keep it here

  62. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Wow, you don’t see that play everyday especially w/ Jeter..

  63. hardwired7 July 15th, 2012 at 1:44 pm

39 straight games scoring 3 runs or more for the Yanks. Amazing.

  64. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Chavez must have gotten an excellent jump. Thought they would have a shot at him.

  65. GregD July 15th, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Weaver’s fastball is nothing to write home about…..he is all about the change up

  66. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Nice way to put up a quick run early in the game. Angels gotta be scratching their head a bit after that one.

  67. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

    Small ball! LOL.

  68. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

Bear down Vato…Don’t walk this guy…The Ump does have a wide zone

  69. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:48 pm

    Atta boy

  70. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    Don’t give in

  71. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Fun question – what brother combination have the most HR’s? And pitching, Niekro or Perry brothers? :)

  72. jacksquat July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    Wow!!!

  73. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    GRANDY!!!!!! what a play!!

  74. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    Willie Mays right there.

  75. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    Holy smokes!

  76. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Don’t ever say Grandy can’t, cause he can !!!!!!!!

  77. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Wow. Call the Cops….Trout was robbed.

  78. GreenBeret7 July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

    out-Trouted

  79. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Fantastic ! Just a fabulous play!!

  80. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

    Hi Jmills….The Niekro brothers

  81. GregD July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Fun question – what brother combination have the most HR’s? And pitching, Niekro or Perry brothers?

    —————–Tommy and Hank Aaron

  82. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Proving once again that UZR is a ridiculous statistic.

  83. cofuzz July 15th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

I’ll take outs of any kind, buy I’d like to see Nova get more on the ground.

  84. I Am Winning July 15th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

That was an almost guaranteed triple, possible inside the parker homer by Trout. For how shallow Granderson plays that is an unbelievable catch. Trout had to be thinking triple or more as soon as he hit it.

  85. Uncle Ellsworth July 15th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

    The Grandyman can.

  86. GreenBeret7 July 15th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

nothing easy about that 3 up 3 down inning.

  87. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Good inning by Nova with an incredible assist by granderson

  88. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:53 pm

    This ump is so bad

  89. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Quick question, is Bourjos available? If so do we want him and what would give up to get him?

  90. Uncle Ellsworth July 15th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

This aint weavers day he’ll won’t see the 6th.

  91. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Greg and Luis,…….you win! Drive up and collect your prize :)

  92. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

It is very hard to hit with an Ump with such a bad and moving k zone

  93. GregD July 15th, 2012 at 1:55 pm

    jmills July 15th, 2012 at 1:54 pm
Greg and Luis,…….you win! Drive up and collect your prize

    ==================

    be right there

  94. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:56 pm

up the middle and an oppo homer…Arod is going to get on a roll

  95. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Gotta be close with Perrys and Niekros !

  96. jacksquat July 15th, 2012 at 1:57 pm

39 straight games 3 runs or more is a single season franchise record.

Is the offense really that inconsistent?

  97. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Atta boy Robbie…Tex, a long fly will do

  98. igotid88 July 15th, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I said yesterday or earlier today the some Yankees have good numbers off Weaver

  99. luis July 15th, 2012 at 1:58 pm

    Should be 3-0

  100. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 1:59 pm

    Base running ?

  101. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 1:59 pm

    Great base running, guys.

  102. jacksquat July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

    Ugh, that was ugly.

  103. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

OMG two baserunning blunders on the same play…i hope the baseball gods are merciful

  104. syd_cash July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

    wow only the Yankees

  105. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Eech. Is that on the base coaches?

  106. igotid88 July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Damn A-Rod should had gone as the defender was falling.

  107. I Am Winning July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I like ARods play to run home, by why not sooner? He was out by a mile.

Jeter, Cano, ARod gave Weaver 3 outs. Good thing for Weaver, because the Yankees were ready to take on a few more runs.

  108. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Enough of the small ball. You can’t screw up baserunning if you hit a homer.

  109. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Utterly speechless after that just speechless

  110. hardwired7 July 15th, 2012 at 2:01 pm

The next kangaroo court should be fun…fines galore.

  111. tucker July 15th, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Pretty obvious Weaver was going to donthe third-to-first pickoff move there. No excuses for that play, yikes.

  112. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Looked like a hit and run and Robbie just jumped too quick.

  113. igotid88 July 15th, 2012 at 2:03 pm

Jeter didn’t give Weaver an extra out. It was just a good play by the Angels

  114. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:04 pm

Don’t drop your arm slot Ivan…

  115. igotid88 July 15th, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Got lucky there on that Pujols foul homer

  116. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:05 pm

    Igotid,

    spot on on the foul

  117. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Kay is extra mundane when he talks about stats.

  118. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Rothschild, time to go to talk to Ivan

  119. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 2:11 pm

    jmills July 15th, 2012 at 1:54 pm
Greg and Luis,…….you win! Drive up and collect your prize

    ==================================

What were the totals for the pitching brothers ?

  120. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:11 pm

He is overthrowing and his arm slot is lower than usual…Phew!!

  121. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Ibanez is a greyhound, isn’t he?

  122. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Angels channeling the Yankees there with the bases loaded :) good job by nova

  123. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 2:14 pm

    Nova “Houdini’d” that inning…

  124. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:14 pm

They need to take good a long at bats here…Nova needs a break

  125. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:16 pm

He is going with the CB on the outside corner

  126. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 2:16 pm

we need back Bobby Meacham at 3rd…hard to believe we’ve had so many guys struck down in the primes of their lives on the bases this season…is ther eany way to tell if we lead the league in that category too?

  127. tucker July 15th, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Swisher put together two tough at bats. He seems to be getting away from the hack at the first strike approach and instead is working the count. Good for the Yanks.

  128. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Silly rule change on the third to first move. Next year it’s a balk.

  129. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Beckett got touched for 3 in the first. 3-1 Rays

  130. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 2:19 pm

we all love Ibanez and ouldn’t have done it without him early on, but is it time to try another lefty at DH for a week?

  131. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Who was first switch hitter to have 30 Hr’s and 50 doubles in a season?

    Hint : He’s still active.

  132. jackamir July 15th, 2012 at 2:20 pm

The 5th is an important inning for Nova.

  133. luis July 15th, 2012 at 2:20 pm

    Texeira

  134. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 2:22 pm

    4 NYY,
Could it be our stalwart first baseman?

  135. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 2:22 pm

You won’t believe the Yankee contract rule I found! I don’t know if they even use it, but it’s there for the taking:

Any Yankee fan who makes any mental error during the life of his conract will be responsible for making a public apology to all fans once the game is terminated. Any fans who are psychologically damaged by any mistake(s) made by any Yankee player are eligible for compensatory damages.* Damages shall include termination of the player’s contract, and/or life-time seasons tickets, and/or monetary damages.

    * – fans who can proven to be psychologically damaged by every Yankee mistake or error, or fans who can be proven to be psychologically damaged only by a specific Yankee player’s mistakes or errors will not be eligible for compensatory damages. (example: if a fan wishes death only to a specific Yankee player but allows life to other Yankee players who make the same mistakes or errors, that fan will not be eligible for compensatory damages.)

  263. 86w183 July 15th, 2012 at 3:07 pm

It’s always a balancing act as to how much rope to give a starter in order to get adequate length out of the rotation.

He nursed Nova thru 6 and got greedy.

Generally I think Girardi has done a great job handling the pitching staff. My biggest gripe has been carrying 12 arms, which is inane and the 6-man rotation last year which screwed up CC

  271. tucker July 15th, 2012 at 3:09 pm

Hate when Michael Kay says the “old Jeff Nelson”‘for the third-to-first pickoff move when pitchers have been doing that move for decades.

  272. 86w183 July 15th, 2012 at 3:09 pm

It’s never stupid to consider trading anyone if the price is right.

    Even Cano.

If the Rays offer Longoria, Price and Zobrist you turning them down?

  273. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:09 pm

    Can Trumbo go 600 feet?

  274. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 3:10 pm

jmills – your compensatory damages were’s specified. I’d say you’d easily get lifetime seasons tickets. You know how much they cost!!!

  275. luis July 15th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

    Good job by Quaills

  276. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

Trumbo only 530 feet short of 600

  277. GregD July 15th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

    we can still come back

  278. tucker July 15th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

Trisha, that is easy to say. How would you get the teammunder $187 million? The team is going to need to make some unpopular decisions to achieve that goal.

  279. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I’d have to check with the tooth fairy first.

And even then, I’d think twice about it.

I’m old school. You don’t dump gems.

  280. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 3:12 pm

jmills, they are definitely yours. I read the rule again. You’ll get them no question.

    :)

  283. luis July 15th, 2012 at 3:17 pm

You know Trisha, with all due respect….But you can’t call those moves stupid in light of the budget limitations…The old Yankee way is over…They need to trade present for future in order to get younger and cost controlled…Unless you want to see a Yankee team that resembles more a nursing home than a baseball team…I don’t mind that you don’t agree and that’s fine…But you don’t need to brand other peoples opinions like that.

  284. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Pirates and Nats – simpy amazing.

It makes you feel great about the game of baseball.

    Chavez is having some year!

  288. luis July 15th, 2012 at 3:19 pm

  289. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 3:19 pm

  299. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 3:22 pm

It’s tough to vote against Jered Weaver. But this game goes to show what all games go to show. There are going to be days when even your best don’t have their best.

That’s why it’s good to be able to chill and enjoy games in spite of those days.

Could any other Baltimore bullpen from the past 30 years have managed to win 10-straight extra inning games? Go Luis Ayala!

  303. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 3:24 pm

I liked Hughes for this start but his numbers against this team are even worse than Nova’s.

  304. tucker July 15th, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Chavez brings so much to this team offensively. When Gardner returns, Chavez gets fewer at bats. I’m not so sure that means a better offense for the Yankees.

Thought Hughes should had started yesterday. Especially with Stewart catching.

  308. JobaTipsHisCap July 15th, 2012 at 3:30 pm

    Trout is so annoying.

  309. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I guess I’d be scared of Weaver if I was a fan of any other team. But the Yanks handle him fairly regularly. Getting spooked must run in their family.

Sometimes I think Bronson Aroyyo is their long-lost brother.

  310. JobaTipsHisCap July 15th, 2012 at 3:31 pm

Martins last hit probably happened in apr.He should just quit now.

  311. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 3:33 pm

    Fark.

  312. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:33 pm

Qualls being on this team gets stranger and stranger

  313. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 3:33 pm

Oh well. Nova had a hard time keeping the yanks in it.

  314. ZachA July 15th, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Girardi’s management in this game has been bizarre. Why is Qualls pitching the 8th in a 1 run game? Have we given up already?

  315. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 3:34 pm

This should have been Joba’s inning.

  316. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Guess qualls is going to eat this game.

  317. tucker July 15th, 2012 at 3:35 pm

    Qualls is no Eppley.

  318. Benny Blanco July 15th, 2012 at 3:36 pm

    There goes our chance.

  319. Northy July 15th, 2012 at 3:36 pm

    Well

Eppley can’t pitch, Soriano and Robertson you don’t use when behind. Rapada i LOOGY and Logan has not been sharp lately…. So what’s the alternative to Qualls?

  320. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:37 pm

none of these guys should brag to their kids about that time 20 year ago that they hit Qualls

  321. Northy July 15th, 2012 at 3:38 pm

This is what’s happening when your starter two days in a row goes 5 and 6 innings….

  322. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Two of three, every series, the rest of the way will be lovely.

  324. scuzzles July 15th, 2012 at 3:39 pm

  325. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Can’t complain about taking two of three from the Angels…

  326. longtimefan July 15th, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Girardi gave this game away in the 8th by leaving Qualls in a one run game Logan could have come in earlier or Mitchell

  327. igotid88 July 15th, 2012 at 3:41 pm

I think Martin was trying to do too much to capitalize on Friday’s game

  328. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 3:41 pm

And the games just keeps getting better.

  329. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

Why is qualls even on this team?

  330. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

if Qualls is not DFA’d after today’s game, I’m personally going to forge the DFA letter and drop it under his hotel room door, with plane tickets home

  331. Doc Iac July 15th, 2012 at 3:45 pm

I think Giradi manages the game dif if we didnt win the first 2, i love Giradi and his BP management, but its hard to defend Qualls in any close game…

  332. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 3:45 pm

4 runs down, 2 innings to go. Piece of cake.

  333. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:46 pm

should we all save Girari time and write his post game statement now?

anyone care to guess wich index card he’ll use? (same cards in wins and losses – but being in first, I guess consistency works)

  334. lil m July 15th, 2012 at 3:47 pm

That extra runs makes it tough . . . offense has done everything they could, unfortunately the bullpen erased their efforts plus interest.

  335. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:49 pm

    dinner plans tonight

  336. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Tough game for the Jays today. Closer Jansen not available ( to be saved for you .) Darren Oliver in his second inning. Cordero warming up ( I hope not needed .) Go Ollie! 2 out, yeah Darren! Next batter. 2 and 1. Go Ollie! 3 and 1 now, runner on second. Got ‘em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jays,…….win :)

  337. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Not much you can do when your starter keeps handing back the lead and the the bullpen starts with qualls.

  338. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:54 pm

OK, really everybody, raise your hand if you thought the game was in the bag when A-Rod and Cano were on 1st and 3rd?

  339. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 3:54 pm

  343. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 3:58 pm

it’s not losing one game, and it’s not how bad we look doing it (everyone looks bad in a loss, but it is how stupid we look after games like this…these are all very astute baseball minds managing coaching and playing but it often looks like the batteries went dead in the flashlight

  344. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Update-Sergio Santos needs surgery, thank goodness for Casey.

  345. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 4:01 pm

    Hassey,
Today, the base running did it, not the coaching. Nova didn’t have anything. Why Qualls, I don’t know. We’ll get’em tomorrow.

  346. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:02 pm

Ron Hassey,…..it can’t be that bad?

  347. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 4:02 pm

this will leave a mark on their Runs Differential…maybe it will start raingin and we can blame the umps for calling the game and not giving us a chance to complete our comeback

  348. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 4:04 pm

no, it’s never bad when you have the top record in MLB, but isn’t it strange how high a % of our few losses seem to have been simply pissed away?

  349. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 4:04 pm

If that was a playoff game, Joe pulls Nova earlier and uses DRob in the eighth.

  350. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 4:07 pm

I’d like to see them at least put a scare into Frieiri to kill his aura of invincibility for the playoffs matchup

  371. luis July 15th, 2012 at 4:22 pm

    Hello everyone again,

It is obvious that Girardi was playing with money in the bank, having won the two previous games. But Eppley was unavailable and he tried to squeezed another inning from Nova without his best stuff today. It happens, I wish we would have someone better than Quaills, but we don’t…It happens…Torre might have played it differently..I am fine with Today’s Girardi”s management.

  381. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

  382. Tyler July 15th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

I’m not convinced that there is little to no hope for Martin at the plate this year. I thought maybe that Friday would ignite him or his walkoff against the Mets but he just can’t keep anything going past 1 at bat.

  383. waka flocka July 15th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

RE: Girardi playing with house money,

you owe it to your guys to try and win every game. i don’t have a problem using DJ but leaving Qualls in the game is inexcusable. on top of him already having a track record of being terrible he didn’t look good. if we expect players to show up 162 games a year then the goal should be to win as many as possible. especially when you’re scoring 5 runs off of a pitcher like Weaver.

  384. Niblick July 15th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

  411. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

This is exciting, baseball at it’s best. Right down to the last pitch.

  412. waka flocka July 15th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

it always comes down to A-Rod.

  413. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

    A-bomb?

  414. luis July 15th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

    Yes!! two more

  415. Benny Blanco July 15th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

    Great ab!!

  416. syd_cash July 15th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Grandy is da king right now :)

  417. Yankee Trader July 15th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Where’s the Angels closer from last year-Walden?

  418. Tyler July 15th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Come on A-Rod. Think right center here. If he shoots the gap out there Grandy scores.

  419. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

No matter HOW this game ends up, Yankee fans should absoutely appreciate how these guys battle.

  420. Yankee Trader July 15th, 2012 at 4:36 pm

I’ll settle for a double with speedster Granderson scoring the winning run.

  421. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:36 pm

“Where’s the Angels closer from last year-Walden?”

I thought at one point he had gotten demoted. Not sure where he is now.

  422. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

I hope u guys win even if I don’t get further ahead :)

  423. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

A-Rod, please don’t take a FB down the middle. Get your swings !

  424. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Man, I love baseball. Doesn’t get any better than this, does it? Okay Al, show you are still the best clutch hitter in baseball. A double like last night’s would be just fine.

  425. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Happy Arod homered earlier. That way anyone who whines if he doesn’t come through looks ridiculous.

  426. luis July 15th, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Very fitting…Regardless, this has been one hell of a game…

  427. Tyler July 15th, 2012 at 4:38 pm

    Trader-

    He’s on the DL

  428. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Don’t try to do too much here, a single ties the game.

  429. luis July 15th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

Shorten up that swing Arod, go oppo

  430. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

    Deuces wild.

  431. TheStraw July 15th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

    Oh well…..

  432. Hassey July 15th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

well – at least we’re hard to kill

  433. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

    jmills – you’re a sweetie. :)

tomingeorgia – to me it doesn’t get any better than this even if Arod fans. This is baseball at its most exciting.

  434. syd_cash July 15th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

somehow i had no confidence in A-rod doing anything……but we took the series so its all good

  435. sunny615 July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

    Game over.

  436. Frozen Rope July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

    Thanks again for arod hank

  437. luis July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Well, we gave them a run for their money…At least they leave NYS with a feeling that no lead is safe against us.

  438. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

love the lohud attitude. Good for you guys. That’s exactly how we should look at this game.

    Proud of you all.

    :)

  439. Niblick July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

And A-roid comes through in the clutch.

Chalk this loss up to brain dead managing in the last 3 innings.

  440. waka flocka July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

at least Qualls got his work in.

  441. 4 NYY July 15th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

He got his swings ( one bad ) Excitement was in the air !

  442. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:41 pm

“And A-roid comes through in the clutch.

Chalk this loss up to brain dead managing in the last 3 innings.”

Oops. Didn’t see this beauty of a post!

    :D

  443. Bronx Jeers July 15th, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Very fitting…Regardless, this has been one hell of a game…

    ———————————-

Yanks have had some very exciting losses this season. Seriously.

  444. JM July 15th, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Uh, the Angels scored 10 runs. I’m not sure I’d blame Arod for the loss.

  445. astrocityfan July 15th, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Too bad we couldn’t close the deal. Still gotta love the fight though

  446. Niblick July 15th, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Glad you liked it, Trisha. My whole purpose in life is to affirm your opinions, didn’t you know?

  447. JM July 15th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

This team never surrenders….Gotta love the fight they showed here

  448. Benny Blanco July 15th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

For anyone talking smack about Arod, I’d like to see what you would do with bases loaded , two outs, facing 98 mph Heat in Yankee stadium.

  449. igotid88 July 15th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

    That was close

  450. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

    trisha,
Bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded. Didn’t quite make it, but did anyone look away? Fantastic ballgame. We’ll get the Jays tomorrow. These guys have no quit in them.

  451. mick July 15th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Chalk this loss up to brain dead managing in the last 3 innings.
    ==============================
what was brain dead was arod and cano on 1st and 3rd, both getting picked off.

  452. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:44 pm

Drat,….I was hoping for a better night for you dudes. I am going to have my daughter say a prayer for me Jays upon the morrow. Great health to all!

  453. tomingeorgia July 15th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

    jmills,
Say that prayer yourself. They need it.

  454. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Thanks Tom,……I geuss :) Hope the weather is fair down there.

  455. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:48 pm

jmills – thanks for that, and I know you mean it. I really want your guys to put in a great season but you know I have to stop a little short when they’re playing my Yanks! Of course I’m always pleased when the Yanks take a series, so I’m sure I’d get through the night if the Jays walked away with a win.

    ;)

  456. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:52 pm

Yup Trish,……and if u people win,……..I can take that! Have a gentle nuit mon ami.

  457. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 15th, 2012 at 4:56 pm

    Vous aussi, mon ami!

    :)

  458. jmills July 15th, 2012 at 4:57 pm

    :)
