Moments after Nick Swisher had taken the air out of Yankee Stadium with his second bases loaded strikeout of the night, Raul Ibanez made the place erupt with delight. Ibanez’s two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth broke a tie and gave the Yankees a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
Russell Martin – who had been marred in a season-long slump and entered the game hitting .178 – got the Yankees on the board first with an opposite field homer in the bottom of the second that just barely made it over the right field wall. After Martin gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead, back-to-back doubles from Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano in the third inning extended the lead to 2-0.
Yankees starter Phil Hughes ended up pitching seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four.
