Yankees fall short in Oakland

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 20, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees streak of three-runs or more continued, but three runs wasn’t enough tonight in Oakland. Nick Swisher’s ninth-inning home run made it close, but the Yankees lost to the A’s 4-3. Freddy Garcia took his first loss since returning to the rotation. Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer in the first inning, Seth Smith had a two-run single in the third and Garcia was charged with four runs through 5.2 innings. The Yankees couldn’t solve A’s rookie A.J. Griffin who made his fifth big league start, all of which have lasted exactly six innings with three runs or less. He had retired 11 in a row before the Yankees finally got on the board with a two-run sixth.

“Luis, Yanks are into seniority, but Phelps has made them take notice.”

YF – yes to both. And they will not put Phelps into the rotation until they are ready to put Phelps into the rotation, no matter how anxious the Yankee fan base is to get him there. That’s the thing they always fail to understand. Their impatience doesn’t typically mirror the Yankees plans.

If he takes Freddy’s place on Tuesday it will be because the Yankees feel it’s the right time for it to happen. If he doesn’t, then he doesn’t.

I just think back to this forum and its furor over wanting Mark Melacon up, and then wanting to dictate when he’d be in games. (Not comparing Melancon and Phelps, comparing lohud to itself.) They were furious, indignant, complaining, always knowing more than the Yankees – and then when Melancon didn’t get the job done, they were immediately ready to throw him in the trash can.)

That’s why I always prefer to see where the Yankees are going rather than to buy into what lohud insists upon. If ever it becomes a union, well then good for both sides.

    ;)

How did Martin get into the game? I watched this one on and off… Did Girardi actually pinch hit someone with the worst hitter on the team?

  3. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 12:40 am

That said, I fully believe Phelps is part of the Yankees plans for next year.

  4. UnKnown July 20th, 2012 at 12:41 am

Gardner’s agent says that even with surgery there is a chance Gardner could play in 2012.

I’m not sure about that. Wishful thinking though can’t hurt.

  5. jacksquat July 20th, 2012 at 12:42 am

Phelps need to take over for Garcia next start.

  6. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 12:43 am

Unknown, Yankees seem to have ways to make magic happen. Look at Joba, and even Mo. So you never know.

  7. 4 NYY July 20th, 2012 at 12:44 am

G-man kind of told us Phelps is gonna start next time. So, that’s just about it. He starts.

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 12:45 am

Didn’t hear that. Will see what he says on that postgame.

  9. 4 NYY July 20th, 2012 at 12:46 am

Gardner gave us a nice 9 hits this year. This thing with him seemed to just get worse and worse. Weird injury.

  10. GreenBeret7 July 20th, 2012 at 12:47 am

Coming off of his last 3 starts including Boston and the Angels, Garcia earned this start. To say it’s a slap in Phelps’ face is just stupid. Whether he draws the next start, who knows. Find out in Seattle.

  11. luis July 20th, 2012 at 12:48 am

    Trisha,

With all due respect….It has nothing to do with impatience…It is OBVIOUS that Phelps is ready for the show…Been saying it since ST…They may like the vet better, but that doesn’t mean it is the right call…At this point in time, Phelps is the better pitcher as he showed tonight without a doubt…Sometimes the Yankee FO is like a big elephant, and I don’t mean this in a nice way, slow to adapt and accept that change is in the air…It is in their best interest to see what this kid can do…Freddy has NO FUTURE with the Yankees, Phelps does…They need to find out if he has what it takes ( I know he does) and the Pettitte injury was the perfect opportunity to find out…Not for this season, but for the several ones to come.

  12. jmv July 20th, 2012 at 12:48 am

I hate to see Freddy start over Phelps. I hate to be beaten by a soft-tosser for the bizillionth time. And hate dogs in tutu.

  13. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 12:49 am

A’s have the best ERA in the AL. Gotta remember that with these games.

  14. Jerkface July 20th, 2012 at 12:50 am

They were furious, indignant, complaining, always knowing more than the Yankees – and then when Melancon didn’t get the job done, they were immediately ready to throw him in the trash can.

LOHUD fallacy, the same people that wanted him up and used properly did not throw him in the trash can.

  15. Jerkface July 20th, 2012 at 12:50 am

Phelps efficiency hurts his ability to get stretched out in the long man role. He hardly ever throws enough pitches. Can’t expect a guy to throw 90-100 pitches when he maxes out at 30 over 3 innings.

  16. jmv July 20th, 2012 at 12:51 am

I don’t think the Phelps’ situation is a LoHud’s infatuation. The guy is better than Garcia, and I agree with Luis and most people here: he has a future, and will be wrecked if misuse. It has happened before

  17. jmv July 20th, 2012 at 12:52 am

    *misused*

So close to tying it up if Teix had only……..hit it a little farther.
    _____
Unfortunately, although he tried to go oppo, it was too high of a pitch for him to drive, esp. with that upper cut swing.

Melancon was never given a fair shake. Yanks didn’t give him much of a chance to success, but that is water under the bridge. The fans’ reaction one way or another regarding the Melancon bandwagon is irrelevant to his success or lack thereof with the Yankees.

    Good Night.

Can’t develop pitching if you don’t give them chances, and you can’t keep waiting for ‘back to the wall plan D’ situations to arise where you’re forced to use youngsters.

  23. luis July 20th, 2012 at 12:57 am

    Good night Yankeefem,

Que descanses y la pases bien donde quiera que estes! ;)

Good post by the way…I agree on your take on Melancon…That’s my beef in general with the FO…That’s why the elephant remark…They don’t see what they have, they always like the vet no matter what and it is frustrating

See this is where I absolutely disagree with you luis. If the Yankees did things according to the lohud temperature, Cano would be on another team, Granderson would have been traded, we wouldn’t have Ibanez, we wouldn’t care about defense behind the dish, we’d have a pretty different rotation – and we’d likely be up the creep without a paddle.

And I say this with total respect to you, and I know you know that, but because you are saying that the time is right for Phelps doesn’t mean it is. I absolutely and unequivocally trust that the Yankees know what they are doing, know how to look at the bigger picture, and know how to win.

If Phelps starts Tuesday, then so he does. If he doesn’t, it won’t mean the Yankees got it wrong. Flexibility isn’t necessarily a hallmark of lohudites.

I totally believe Phelps is part of the Yankees bigger plan. I also believe that he won’t melt in a pool of wax and never be able to successfully start for the Yankees if he doesn’t start on Tuesday.

  26. UnKnown July 20th, 2012 at 1:01 am

There is a lot that goes into running the club. Unfortunately fans aren’t privy to all the reasons why things happen all the time. For example why someone starts over another person.

There might be a really good reason why Garcia would start over Phelps on Tues. that the team has as a source of inside info. Remember Girardi doesn’t tells the media everything, in fact I would argue that more times then not his answers are super vanilla.

But without knowledge of any special inside info, to say that Garcia gives you a better chance to win on Tuesday than Phelps is crazy. No sense even debating that, it is so obvious that Phelps should be your starter.

  27. luis July 20th, 2012 at 1:02 am

    4 NYY July 20th, 2012 at 12:57 am

” Girardi said he plans to use Phelps as more than a long reliever. “

    ======================

Yup, he said that he wanted to use him more like he used Wade…Which I find baffling and shortsighted…If he doesn’t build his innings to 150, it would be the second year in a row that he doesn’t throw that number of innings…If he is put in the rotation next season, we risk another dead arm season afterwards, like the 2011 season of Hughes. They don’t seem to learn from their mistakes.

Uh right. The Yankees don’t know what they’re doing. That’s right, they traded for Pineda, I forgot.

    :)

You people actually believe you know more than the Yankee organization. That’s the funniest part of all!!!

  29. jmv July 20th, 2012 at 1:07 am

Phelps is not LoHud temperature. The guy, right now, is better and with more upside than Garcia, I don’t think anyone can argue with that. And citing JF, “can’t develop pitching if you don’t give them chances”. And even being short-sighted, in baseball usually the hottest gives you the highest chance to win.

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 1:08 am

    Don’t tell this group that.

As always, I believe the Yankees know what they’re doing. Phelps looks excellent no question. But as you said, if they have some reason to start Freddy, then I won’t be convinced that they don’t know what they’re doing just because the same vocal group always decies they know more than the Yankees do about running the team.

Melancon was brought up, and he gave up hits and runs, walked hitters, through wild pitches and hit batters. They couldn’t afford to keep him in there except in blowouts. He settled in down in Houston, but, he’s back to a NY sort of way, this year.

  33. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 1:13 am

jmv – I’m not arguing against Pelps starting. I’m saying that unless the Yankees say next Tuesday is the time he should be starting, then it isn’t, and it doesn’t matter to me how many people on lohud think otherwise. People here are nothing more than fans behind keyboards. As someone pointed out earlier, nobody here has earned a WS ring, has won any championships, or has been a major league lifer.

The Yankee organization has produced all of the Yankee teams and has guided all of the Yankee teams – not the people on lohud.

I say and mean that respectfully. But I will always believe the organization’s choice because they are dealing with infinitely more information than we can hope to have.

  34. GreenBeret7 July 20th, 2012 at 1:14 am

    ***threw***

Keep with your fantasies of the Yankees wrecking pitchers. That’s what you do best.

  35. UnKnown July 20th, 2012 at 1:17 am

I think it can be fun to suggest what the Yankees should do with player personnel and in game strategic decisions. It doesn’t have to be taking so seriously when someone lives on the wild side and God Forbid actually suggests the Yankees do something different then what they are currently doing.

To me that is the fun part of being a fan.

Allowing the Yankees Front Office and Girardi to turn a person into a zombie is pretty boring IMO. And believe it or not the Yankees DON’T get everything right 100% of the time.

With that said, I think the Yankees are the best ran franchise in all of the 4 major sports, but again they do make mistakes.

And when Melancon was brought up the Yankees were either dealing with a very slight lead in the AL East or they might have been a few games behind first place. They didn’t have the luxury they do right now to let someone stick around and hope to get the job done.

But we should never let facts get in the way of a good story.

    No Trisha,

YF meant that sometimes they make mistakes…Like I am saying they are doing it with Phelps…You seem to think that they are always right, that’s your prerogative… I happen to think that sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong, like this instance…This is mine and YF’s prerogative as well

When posters can do that and keep it at that level, you are absolutely right. Unfortunately, not everyone here does it that way. There are posters who become indignant beyond belief, as if the Yankees have taken away their first born and almost turn it into a matter of life and death. They begin to believe their own press and rage on and on about how the Yankees are causing the destruction of civilization! That’s when I think it gets more than a little bizarre.

Trisha, no problem. This is a blog, we try to discuss matters here, in a polite and kind manner, at least for myself. I don’t try to be smarter than the front office. But if we don’t exchange thoughts, it would be very boring, don’t you think?

I believe in the Yankees, they are a winning organization. But they also had been a disaster developing pitchers. That’s a fact. They are trying, but right now I don’t see the light. They are doing Phelps the same they did to Joba and Phil. Didn’t work with them (Phil seems to be rebounding). I just hope they don’t repeat that.

  44. Jerkface July 20th, 2012 at 1:29 am

Melancon was not pitched on a consistent schedule, and when he did in a september callup pitched to a 3 ERA. Robertson was allowed to pitch to a 5 ERA for an entire season without being sent back down. Melancon was sorely mistreated. Girardi pitched him in a blow out, and after he had a fine 1 inning, tried to stretch it and then he gave up some runs and was banished to the minors. The way they handled him wasn’t very good.

He had a very good debut, then 2 days then 3 days without pitching, gave up 2 runs and was sent back down. Came up in July, went 17!! days without pitching and actually had a 2.5 ERA to close out the year from that point on.

In 2010 he only made 2 appearances. One he went a scoreless first then got hung out by Konerko during his very good season when he came out for a 2nd inning. Then had a bad outing vs the Rays. Boohoo, 2 bad outings. Then he got traded.

The Yankees showed no patience with him. He pitched fine in 09 and didn’t deserve the treatment he got, especially with the Yankees keeping guys like Gaudin and Mitre on the roster over him.

  45. Jerkface July 20th, 2012 at 1:31 am

Melancon had a 3.86 ERA in 16 IP in 2009. He did fine, he was not given a chance, then he was traded. He had very good 2 seasons in Houston.

  46. jmv July 20th, 2012 at 1:32 am

    Gotta go too. Nght all

  47. Jerkface July 20th, 2012 at 1:32 am

He has a .55 ERA in 16 IP since being recalled from AAA by the Red Sox as well. Batters hitting .143 .186 .143 .329 , 13 K to 2 BB with lots of ground balls as is his way.

  49. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 1:32 am

luis, it seems that every time you and YF differ with what the Yankees are doing, you automatically assume that you’re right and they’re wrong! And there have been times where I think your position has been almost unsupportable in terms of the reality of the organizational picture. But you still think you’re right.

But as Joe said earlier in a very generic sense, because people on lohud think they have it right doesn’t mean they have it right. Or because you disagree with a position the Yankees take doesn’t mean the Yankees have it wrongg.

If my belief that they know infinitely more about how to run a team and have reams more information that they are dealing with than you, I, or anyone else here could ever hope to know, if that means I think they’re always right, then yes, I think they’re always right. Or I think that they definitely know what they’re doing, as opposed to fans who have the patience of gnats and want what they want when they want it.

I’ve been around this rodeo too long to believe for a minute that the knowledge here is superior to that of the yankees.

Just how I feel. Fans live for the moment. The organization has to life for today, tomorrow, and next year. They’re much better equipped to do it than lohudites are and they have much more information than lohdites could ever hope to.

I guess I’m as entitled to that opinion as you are to whatever yours is.

Lohud is fun, yes fun, for me to come to and read all different kinds of takes. I guess I don’t get worked up over what people say or suggest about this or that. All the emoticon’s in the world can’t always depict peoples tones when speaking on certain topics, so it’s hard to say how worked up people really are getting.

I do think it’s contradictory for people to invite others opinions on certain issues, but then when those opinions are given those same people who were asking for others opinions try their hardest to convince those people that their opinions are wrong.

Not sure at all if that made sense. Probably a sign I need to get up out of here.

I guess maybe I should pick the periods when somebody does well and present that as fact like Jerky. Of those games you chose, half were against NL teams and two others were Oakland and Seattle. Almost every game was a blowout. Really stressful situations. As to his 2 years in Houston, it amounted to 1 year plus a month and a half, or be generous and make it two months.

  63. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 20th, 2012 at 2:12 am

waka, I’m saying that they deal with a lot more information than we can hope to have and so when they make a decision it’s with a heck of a lot more input than the simple stuff we deal with here. You know every time something doesn’t go right, it doesn’t mean the right decision wasn’t made. It could mean that it just didn’t work out – if you know what I’m saying.

If Phelps is chosen to go Tuesday, then he is. If he isn’t, there will be a you-know-what storm here because some people have already decided that he has to go on Tuesday. In a case like that, I believe the Yankees know what they’re doing far better than posters on lohud. If Phelps doesn’t pitch on Tuesday, it isn’t fatal. It isn’t the end of his potential career as a starter.

I don’t care if he does or he doesn’t. It will all work out.

Don’t forget, this is the same cast of characters who told you that the Yankees were going to be in a world of hurt because they didn’t have the offense to carry the team and were predicting all kinds of negative outcomes. (not all of them, but certinly some of them.) Well when the same folks start yammering about what has to happen with Phelps and how the Yankees are doing him wrong, it’s hard for me to take it very seriously. Is all.
