    JIM BOWDEN ?@JimBowdenESPNxm

Colby Lewis is out for the yr according to the Rangers even more likely now that Olt and/or MPerez will be dealt for Hamels,Garza or Greinke

This calls for a celebration !

Time for a burrito and a cold one.

    :)

  4. RadioKev July 23rd, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Always fun acquiring a brand name. He’s not the Ichiro of old, but it’s still a nice surprise.

  5. yankee21 July 23rd, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Just caught the news. Excellent pick-up. I believe his game will be elevated coming to a team where the games count. DJ Mitchell and Farquar (Lord Farquot-Shrek) were expendable

  6. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 23rd, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Imagine the surprise of the M’s fans who DON’T get this news before the game tonight…WOW ! :-)

#’s are taken very seriously in NY…when was your last game at YS GF?

  8. Fondo Motz July 23rd, 2012 at 7:55 pm

No one has asked the big question. What will Ichiro look like without the beard???????

    I see a Renaissance Man

  9. comet July 23rd, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Why in the world would Girardi bat Ichiro 8t?h

    MTU was a trifle.

Will scouting further additions to Yankee squad!

  10. Tabbert July 23rd, 2012 at 7:56 pm

As much as he has declined, he is still hitting .268? That’s better than most of our current lineup. Obviously his OBP is putrid, his power is gone, but this guy can still do great things for our club. He is hitting .290 on the road this year, factor that in, Yankee stadium, the fact that he can play for a championship, and its not farfetched to think that he could have a GREAT second half. Not to mention, Ichiro in October? That just makes our lineup even deadlier.

Fangraph’s UZR-150 has Ichiro by far MLB best def OF. But not sure about system since 2d best is Alfonso Soriano. I kid u not. #Yankees

    lol at UZR

  13. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 7:57 pm

as long as the yankees maintain a healthy lead i think we’re gonna see everybody get real days off instead of 1/2 days off through august and september.

given the ages in the lineup this can help keep them fresher into the fall.

Shame Spencer July 23rd, 2012 at 7:40 pm

I dunno, GF, I still think that was more propaganda than anything else. The writers love that stuff and perpetuate it with the help of an organization that likes to remind people of their deep rooted history.

    ———-

It was certainly a media-driven story but I do seem to recall that Hawkins did eventually change his number because of the fan reaction and not wanting to be a distraction.

That would suggest it was more than just a myth. That doesn’t make it any less stupid, though. He didn’t deserve that kind of abuse.

  15. Tyler July 23rd, 2012 at 7:58 pm

You’d think that if your formula to rank these guys came back with the result of Alfonso Soriano 2nd in all of baseball for his defense you’d consider a few tweaks before releasing those results to the viewing public…

I do wonder if they’ll move Felix…. At this point, you gotta wonder why not.

    ~

Because you have to have SOME vets.
Yes, they have TONS of top flight pitching prospects – but, they are just that right now – prospects. You have to have something to build around.

    ======

Shame Spencer July 23rd, 2012 at 7:50 pm
Did Ichiro get a lot of rest with the M’s, Compass? I’m hoping we can give him more than he’s used to and that could help his overall performance.

    ~

No. And there were arguments galore as to why not (because he was ruling the roost and didn’t want days off?) since he seemed to fair much better after a rare day off…

OK – exciting stuff but, I HAVE to try to get some work done ;-)

  17. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:00 pm

didnt ichiro say he picked 51 out of respect for bernie? he should just call bernie and get him to give his blessing and its all set. a feel good story.

    Rosy-

Better pay attention to Ichiro in the stripes.

We’ll see if his time is passed, as you say.

    I kinda doubt it.

    ~

I meant his time is passed on the M’s … which is the only team I care about
I wish Ichiro well, in whatever the future holds for him.

Some of my specific memories are a grand Slam vs. the Red Sox, a walk-off homer vs. Mariano and, one of the most special – I was there with my dad the night he passed George Sissler…

  24. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:02 pm

wow, i wonder what miami wants for jj. he’s not quite right the year back from surgery and might be a great pickup in the long run.

  25. Jerkface July 23rd, 2012 at 8:02 pm

didnt ichiro say he picked 51 out of respect for bernie?

After expressing no preference as to a uniform number, Ichiro was issued #51 by the Mariners. He was initially hesitant because it had previously been worn by pitching star Randy Johnson. To avoid insulting Johnson, Ichiro sent a personal message to the pitcher promising not to “bring shame” to the uniform.

  26. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:02 pm

What is Marchand talking about…..Ichiro’s contract is up after this year …..

  27. JM July 23rd, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I thought Ichiro just said at the press conference that he was going to switch numbers in deference to Bernie

Ichiro wore 51 in Japan and was assigned 51 by the Mariners after stating he had no preference.

  30. DaveD July 23rd, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Boston are going to steal one of these good Marlins players amidst the turmoil, aren’t they?

  31. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Yanks are likely not to re-sign Swisher. If Ichiro plays well, I could see Yanks signing him to one-year deal as they by time for M Williams

  34. mick July 23rd, 2012 at 8:04 pm

he who thinks hawkins was booed for non-performance is the idiot.

  35. Tyler July 23rd, 2012 at 8:05 pm

It’s not a huge deal but this unofficially retired uniform thing is kind of stupid. If nobody is going to ever be able to wear 51 or 21 again just retire them. I don’t think they should be retired but it’s pointless to just have them sit there if nobody will be able to wear them.

  36. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:06 pm

If Ichiro plays well….he’s got to play well first. I think/hope the Yankees will look for a real long term option this winter.

  37. mick July 23rd, 2012 at 8:06 pm

they will retire them when they are good and ready…

  38. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:06 pm

Apparently stealth Cashman was discussing this trade shortly after Ichiro requested a trade around the time of the AS Game. I’m Happy. His splits look good away from Safeco and at night and he’s always played well in YS.

Harold Reynolds feels that Ichiro would end up in RF and Ichiro would be hitting #1, with Jeter #2.
I feel after a transition, #2 would be great.

  47. Tyler July 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Johnson had a string of 10 or so quality starts in a row. He struggled early and his last 3 starts have been bad. I’d love to have him… his season sounds like a guy struggling off a surgery (like Wainwright is in St. Louis).

  48. pat July 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 pm

    You thought what?

Your argument doesn’t make a damn bit of sense.

Do you want to conduct a poll and ask current season ticket holders on this blog whether they believe booing a player because of the number he wears on his back is stupid or not?

    I don’t think you’d like the answer you’d get.

  52. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:10 pm

meanwhile johnson has no hits 6 k’s through 4 innings.

  53. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    Blake-

Weren’t you one of those who mentioned that the Yankees should explore Ichiro?

Tigers made a very good deal for Infante and Sanchez.

Suspect now that Colby Lewis is facing TJ surgery, that the Rangers will be looking for a starter, competing with the Angels for one.

  54. mick July 23rd, 2012 at 8:11 pm

    it worked though didn’t it?
fans didn’t like it and let it be known.

  55. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:11 pm

pat, maybe we can finally get t-bone buhner back…

  56. Tyler July 23rd, 2012 at 8:11 pm

The Marlins finally get a brand new stadium, vow to prove that baseball can work in S. Florida, spend a ton of money in free agency, and then have to start a firesale because they have a terribly put together team…. does anybody think their fans are going to patiently fill that stadium another 2-3 years if they rebuild?

  57. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:12 pm

“Weren’t you one of those who mentioned that the Yankees should explore Ichiro?”

yea I mentioned him awhile back….said I wouldn’t mind taking a shot on him if he’s cheap and Seattle ate most of the money…..I like the move if they can’t/won’t get a long term option.

  58. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:13 pm

YT thats why iim rooting for an extension for hamels. im very curious what he ‘s gonna cost considering no compensation.

depending on the cost, he could look good in pinstripes, too.

  59. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 23rd, 2012 at 8:13 pm

They just got the #10 rated prospect for Anibal Sanchez. They better be demanding Lester and Doubront/Morales at the least. So Johnson has struggled for the last couple monhts. The guy has been a top pitcher for years and is signed to a reasonable contract.

They cant get handed Johnson for nothing.

  60. jr1212 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:14 pm

what would it take to get Josh Johnson? IMO the Yanks dont go anywhere near him. They probably feel gun shy due to the Pineda situation. If they get him cheap sure but dont think they give up a package of prospects.

  61. Tyler July 23rd, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Omar Infante is a pretty good player too… Detroit got him with Sanchez also.

  62. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:14 pm

If Hamels doesn’t sign that extension he will be a Ranger….you can just about bank on that. The Rangers are going to get somebody…..either Hamels, Greinke, Garza, Johnson….Cliff Lee…..they are going to add a starting pitcher…..and if they don’t do that they’ll probably go after Upton

  63. Pat M. July 23rd, 2012 at 8:14 pm

my plane just landed in seattle and i’m hearing that yanks landed ichero. great pickup for the stretch run on all counts. didn’t blake throw this trade out as a possiblitity a week ago ?

  64. Captain Clutch July 23rd, 2012 at 8:15 pm

I hope Ichiro doesn’t cry because he has to bat 8th. I know that he is known to be very moody and you hear that teammates don’t like him. I am sure that Cashman asked Jeter his opinion before this trade was made. Hopefully being on a good team makes him improve his game and he fits into the team well.

  65. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:15 pm

    Pat M,

I just said I’d look at Ichiro if they’d trade him and he was cheap….

  66. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 23rd, 2012 at 8:16 pm

And lets not forget, there are other teams in baseball. I know, its shocking.

But the piece of crap Red Sox arent the only team in baseball, and not the only team in need of SP.

Josh Johnson is a very good young pitcher with a reasonable contract. He should require a boatload from any team.

  67. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Johnson looks good tonight….the no hitter just got broken up but his stuff looks close to back.

  68. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:17 pm

    Ken Rosenthal ?@Ken_Rosenthal

For those who missed it: #Marlins’ trade likely to be first of several. Team wants to change mix, eventually put better club on field.

I would think the #1 guy they’d want to move to “change the mix” would be Hanley.

  69. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:18 pm

yes the rangers will get someone i just think hamels is better than the others. He’s a WS MVP. (then again, so is levon hernandez:))

  70. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 23rd, 2012 at 8:18 pm

Omar Infante??? A good young player??? He’s a role player. He’s a Placido Polanco.

  71. Nick in SF July 23rd, 2012 at 8:20 pm

Yanks are at -191 to win tonight. They were at -168 this morning.

    The Ichiro Effect!

  72. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:21 pm

After Kuroda shuts down the Mariners tonight with Ichiro leading the way, maybe Cashman will instruct Girardi to pitch Phelps in place of Garcia tomorrow, showcasing him for another big deal.

  73. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Phelps and Betances for Josh Johnson!

  74. UnKnown July 23rd, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Obviously Ichiro mans RF while Swish is out. When he comes back is when Girardi will have a decision to make.

  75. jpmatrixfan88 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Mick, Hawkins was booed if I am not mistaken, his first game with the team. I distinctly remember Michael Kay talking about it the day after saying he (Hawkins) had no idea why he was being booed.

  76. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:23 pm

man I hope he plays like Youkalis had….we’ll be in good shape

  77. mick July 23rd, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Joe wouldn’t do that to Freddy, just like he won’t disrupt the lineup and insult grandy.
When the right time comes the moves will be made, not time to panic.

  78. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Girardi said at the press conference that Ichiro would be in left, although we’ll just have to wait and see.

  79. jacksquat July 23rd, 2012 at 8:25 pm

  80. Jerkface July 23rd, 2012 at 8:26 pm

The only Yankee booed during pregame introductions Tuesday night was reliever LaTroy Hawkins.

#Yankees were never told #Phillies Victorino #Dbacks Upton available. Asked on #Twins Span, never got price. Ichiro fell in lap, right price

I thought Span would have been a nice pick up but can complain on getting Ichiro for basically nothing

  82. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:28 pm

Reynolds in the stadium talking to Girardi during BP, no doubt trying to convince him why Ichiro should play RF and bat leadoff. :)

Ichiro just trotted out in a Yankee uniform. He has his warmup jacket on, but apparently he’ll wear No. 31.

  95. MoRings42 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:32 pm

SICK!!!! The 10,000 hit lineup. I don’t know the numbers but Jeter has 3,000ish, Arod is close, Ichiro is 2,000ish and I’m sure if you add up the other guys, they’ll be around 2,000.

  96. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:33 pm

@pgammo think part of deal is at worst, speed/defense; at best, reborn in better lineup, stadium, pennant race.

As intriguing it is to hear that a certain team has a scout at a certain game, isnt that what scouts do?

  98. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:35 pm

yea …there are probably a lot more scouts at that game…..writers just like to tweet that stuff….but I would think both Boston and the Rangers really would have interest in Johnson….hopefully the Yanks would as well.

  99. Johnny. Rocket. July 23rd, 2012 at 8:35 pm

How many homers does Jarrod Saltalamacchia have now? 30? 40?

  101. MoRings42 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:36 pm

Wow.. I know he’s not as good but wow, never thought I’d see this day.

  102. LGY July 23rd, 2012 at 8:36 pm

Saw the title of this thread and thought why the hell is Chad posting Seattle’s lineup.

Then I did a double take when I saw it’s actually the Yankees lineup.

    WTH is going on???

  103. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:36 pm

    Blake-

Looks like many of the key trades will be made before the deadline, by many of the contenders, rather than chancing that only table scraps will be left.

Could the Yankees still be looking for an arm?

  104. jr1212 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:36 pm

    blake,

im sure the Yanks have a scout there, if they didnt I would be dissapointed

  105. Nick in SF July 23rd, 2012 at 8:37 pm

Rangers scouts are everywhere, Nolan Ryan is brilliant. But they never got around to scouting the 2012 Giants or 2011 Cardinals.

  106. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 23rd, 2012 at 8:37 pm

No jr1212. The Red Sox are the only team to send scouts to games. Theyre also the only team to walk on the moon.

  107. mick July 23rd, 2012 at 8:37 pm

    It’s Ichiro-Mania!

  108. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:37 pm

“Have we heard how much cash the Yankees received?”

sounds like almost 16 million since they are only paying like 2 million dollars of Ichiro’s 18 million dollar salary.

  109. jr1212 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:38 pm

Ichiro wearing 31.. Javy Vazquez fans are mad!!

  110. m July 23rd, 2012 at 8:38 pm

So, um. The Nets are introducing their “Core Four”.

    Um, yeah.

Can anyone here name the 4 without looking it up?

  111. mick July 23rd, 2012 at 8:38 pm

    didnt winfield wear 31?

  112. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2012 at 8:38 pm

    Austinmac-

The Yankees will be responsible for $2.25MM of that salary, meaning the Mariners are including somewhere around $4.5MM to facilitate the deal. per MLBTRs

    austinmac July 23rd, 2012 at 8:35 pm
Have we heard how much cash the Yankees received?

It has been reported that the Yankees will pay just over 2 million of what’s left of Ichiro’s contract, so the rest obviously would be the cash.

  114. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:39 pm

“Could the Yankees still be looking for an arm?”

aren’t they always….if they do trade for somebody I’d rather it be somebody that really is a potential front line guy and preferably somebody that’s not a rental…..like Josh Johnson

  115. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 23rd, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Geeze Louise, I heard the news on the radio on my way home from the beach. (Just got home). The only thing I didn’t know was who had been traded.

Here’s the only thing I feel bad about – that we are playing the Ms right now, and in Seattle. It will just have to be so strange for everyone but the Yankees I would say.

I do like this move. You never have to worry about perfect coverage in right and anyone running on Ichiro. Plus he is fast.

    GO YANKS!!!

    GO HIRKO!!!

    GO ICHIRO!!!

    GO RANGERS!!!

  116. UnKnown July 23rd, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Ha, Ichiro just made a behind the back catch on the track. He looks awesome in the NYY road uniform.

  117. MoRings42 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Dear M’s, since you’re in the giving mood.. Can we have Felix for nothing too?

  118. j9d July 23rd, 2012 at 8:40 pm

Blake — agree with you on Rangers which is why I’d be fine with Hamels signing extension. But as you stated, Rangers will get somebody big.

  119. Joe from Long Island July 23rd, 2012 at 8:41 pm

So, rangers are trading for hamels, greinke, and upton….

man, they must have a lot of players to do all that.

  120. Nick in SF July 23rd, 2012 at 8:41 pm

“Can anyone here name the 4 without looking it up?”

Trick question, that Russian billionaire oligarch owner that sends his players to week-long vacations to Moscow brothels is the Nets’ Core 4 all by himself.

  121. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:42 pm

    Evan Grant ?@Evan_P_Grant

If I’m Marlins and Rangers are interested in Olt package for Johnson, I consider that I can deal Hanley Ramirez elsewhere; rebuild quickly.

  122. Jeff in Canada July 23rd, 2012 at 8:42 pm

Pineda/Montero, now Ichiro. This is all foreplay for Felix.

    Cashman…you dog!

  125. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 8:43 pm

  126. Nick in SF July 23rd, 2012 at 8:44 pm

Wonder how his perks were handled?

    08:$17M, 09:$17M, 10:$17M, 11:$17M, 12:$17M

$25M ($5M annually) deferred at 5.5% interest, reducing deal’s average annual value to $16.1M (deferred money to be paid in annual installments Jan. 30 beginning year after his retirement)
limited no-trade clause allowing Ichiro to specify 10 clubs to which he may not be traded without his consent
performance and award bonuses, including $50,000 for All Star selection
interpreter, trainer, transportation for Spring Training & regular season
4 annual round-trip airline tickets from Seattle to Japan
    housing allowance: $32,000 in 2008, $33,000 in 2009, $34,000 in 2010, $35,000 in 2011, $36,000 in 2012

  129. Ys Guy July 23rd, 2012 at 8:45 pm

rangers and red socks are going to be in on pitchers so we have to be, too. the rangers are all-in this year.

  130. jr1212 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:45 pm

Considering the Yanks got an OF, what is the biggest “need” on this team? If Joba comes back soon I dont see any weakness..

  131. Captain Clutch July 23rd, 2012 at 8:47 pm

I hope Montero takes it easy on the Yanks in this series. He has been terrible in July but on the last road trip he went 12-for-26 (.462) w/9 RBIs. It would be tough to see him get big hits in this series.

  132. EA July 23rd, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Hopefully he plays as well for us as Cody Ross is for Boston

  133. Joe from Long Island July 23rd, 2012 at 8:47 pm

I thought darvish was supposed to be rangers’ big pitching acquisition. then it was Oswalt. Now it’s hamels/greinke/garza/johnson? Man, they’re going to have every starting pitcher in MLB! :(

  134. Nick in SF July 23rd, 2012 at 8:47 pm

  135. spidanyc July 23rd, 2012 at 8:50 pm

So it looks as if the Yankees and Mariners are frequent trade partners. Why do the Mariners need King Felix?

Nova, Swish, Tyler Austin, Corban Joseph and Brandon Laird for King Felix

  136. Jeff in Canada July 23rd, 2012 at 8:50 pm

I’m sure he suits the away jersey, but Ichiro might make a run at Randy Johnson for most awkward-looking player in pinstripes ever, amirite?!

I’ll be giving a standing O in my living room, but still…

  137. RadioKev July 23rd, 2012 at 8:51 pm

And just like that the Yankees have the best Japanese position player and pitcher.

  138. MoRings42 July 23rd, 2012 at 8:52 pm

I think the biggest weakness now is Russell Martin. At this point, I’d rather see Stewart get more time because at least he hits the ball.

  139. Nick in SF July 23rd, 2012 at 8:52 pm

I think the pinstripes will suit Ichiro quite well.

    Jose Canseco, not so much.

Pinstripes suit Canseco well.. just not NYY pinstripes.

  142. EA July 23rd, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Amazing that Seattle hasn’t made the playoffs since Ichiro’s rookie year in 2001.

It is actually amazing to see how many franchises have long postseason droughts – Toronto, Baltimore, KC, Nats/Expos, Pirates, Seattle all have 12+ years of no playoffs.

    Good evening everyone,

Just read the news….I don’t know yet how I feel about this move… Knowing how Cashman has been operating, this move was in the realm of possibilty…I guess this means no Upton this TD… But DJ Mitchell was a very nice prospect, not sure if a rental for Ichiro was worth him…. What do you guys think?

  161. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 23rd, 2012 at 9:06 pm

blake, could that be a good thing? Or does that mean Johnson can be had by the Red Sox for less now because of the blister?

  162. Captain Clutch July 23rd, 2012 at 9:07 pm

I am surprised that the Tigers traded Jacob Turner for 2 months of Sanchez and 1 year of Infante. Dombrowski is a very good gm and he definitely isn’t afraid to make a move. Maybe they soured on Turner who knows but he was very highly thought of.

  163. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 23rd, 2012 at 9:07 pm

“OMG, Rosenthal just said the Red Sox have a scout watching Josh Johnson. #endtimesapproaching”

Sux need to pick up an entire starting rotation. Think they’ll get that done by July 31st? If not, feel free to consider John Johnson, if they are to get him, the bandaid applied to the corpse.

The one good signing by the Sux was Cody Ross.

    **********

Saturday was Jason Varitek day at fenway. When they were doing the video presentation of his career, I understand the one of the shots was of him with his glove in Arod’s face. Totally classy organization and that’s why they will continue to play from hell. Something that I saw on the highlights was that when the three stooges (Henry, Lucchino and Warner) were introduced and brought onto the field, they were booed by the fenway faithful. And they stood there with embarrassed grins on their faces.

    *************

Some members of RSN have gone so far as to suggest that the creme de la classe of the Sux team, Lester and hayseed Beckett, are actually leading the tank of games so that Bobby Valentine gets fired.

Whether or not that is true, the one thing that is, is this: ICEBERG AHEAD!

  164. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 23rd, 2012 at 9:08 pm

How many years is Ichiro signed for? Just this year?

  165. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 9:08 pm

The blister should affect much…he’ll make his next start most likely.

    luis,

I think it’s a good risk and worth Mitchell to be honest….I don’t think they could have gotten Victorino that cheaply….Mitchell’s future with the Yankees was either in the pen or as trade bait.

  166. fiveironfromfenway July 23rd, 2012 at 9:09 pm

This is really a no lose for the Yankees.
A nice acquisition that is only on the books for this year. As mentioned before, maybe if things turn at well he re-ups for a year, but this is not a necessity.
They give up a career minor league middle reliever they just picked up on waivers.
Mitchell is a very nice pitcher and will have a major league career. Will he be a back end starter or middle reliever. But, the fact of the matter is he is already behind several arms (Phelps and Warren) this year and probably a whole slew more next year. You have to give up something and the Yankees gave from a position of strength.

A legitimate question and I have not given it any thought, if Marlins are truly in fire sale mode should the Yankees be in on Hanley? I have no idea of his contract. But, with an aging Jeter it could certainly be a good upgrade.

  167. blake July 23rd, 2012 at 9:10 pm

“I am surprised that the Tigers traded Jacob Turner for 2 months of Sanchez and 1 year of Infante. Dombrowski is a very good gm and he definitely isn’t afraid to make a move. Maybe they soured on Turner who knows but he was very highly thought of.”

yea I think they sold low on Turner a bit….but the Tigers are all in to win it now and the move fills 2 needs for them with one deal.

    Martin/Stew

  169. Yank1 July 23rd, 2012 at 9:10 pm

That Ichiro PC was hilarious, where he said Harold Reynold’s question wasn’t important and wouldn’t answer it.

Japanese players’ PC always fascinate me – they are always so respectful and have great analysis of their self-worth in the grand scheme of things. They take questions very literally and do not speculate, they base their knowledge on what they know, not fantasy or projection. Ichiro was asked about what it would mean to play in the WS and he said he cannot answer that because he has only made the playoffs once, so he does not know what it would mean. An American player would have said “umm, oh man, it would be awesome to win a WS and celebrate a championship, um, you know, its what you dream about”

They are also not cringe-worthy in their praise and respect, it is genuine and appropriate, no loaded phrases and excessive adverbs and adjectives and cliches. It is very refreshing to listen to.

I also love the Japanese facial expressions, Ichiro is like a combination of humor and seriousness. I could have watched that PC for hours.

  170. JobaTipsHisCap July 23rd, 2012 at 9:10 pm

    welcome to Yankees, Ichiro!

  171. Tyler July 23rd, 2012 at 9:11 pm

    luis-

Mitchell has a future somewhere in the big leagues but I think he’s one of those guys who just isn’t good enough to crack the Yankees rotation. That would likely leave him as a long reliever or a converted short reliever which makes even 3 months of Ichiro worth it. I like Mitchell and wish him well but the Yanks still have guys like him (Adam Warren etc.)

  172. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 23rd, 2012 at 9:12 pm

“But DJ Mitchell was a very nice prospect, not sure if a rental for Ichiro was worth him….”

Exactly what I’m talking about when I say that fans have to try to position themselves to either buy into the “win now” approach or the “have patience” approach.

I think it was a good move. I would give my eye teeth for great outfield defense and throwing. So as far as that goes, it’s a dream come true. And with the loss of Swisher and the pretty sure season loss of Gardner, the Yankees were really living on borrowed time, even though they did have active bodies in place. But the potential for breaking down from overplay is always there with fill-ins and bench players. So I say, good for us.

  173. RMike July 23rd, 2012 at 9:12 pm

You trade Turner for someone like Hamels or Greinke, not for a mid-rotation started like Anibal Sanchez.

    Dumb move.

    —————–

Let’s not forget that when the Yanks made the Pineda trade the conversation started because the Yanks were trying to get Felix. So obviously they would make his contract fit in if they could get him. Maybe the plan was to let Granderson go if they got Felix…who knows.

    —————————

Luis, from what I’ve read Mitchell might become above average. Phelps has way more upside and a much better chance of sticking. Mitchell’s also had mixed results this season.

Ichiro is a high upside player, even if he’s been on the decline the past couple of years. I’d do that deal any day.

King Felix is a great pitcher and would be an ace in almost every rotation. Saying that right now I dont think it would be wise to give up that much (prospects and contract) for him considering the budget. If it was the Felix of two years ago than you definitively do it.

Maybe the Tigers wanted to give the Marlins a thank you for stealing Cabrera from them for basically nothing. If you trade Turner you have to get back a top starting pitcher. If Cashman just made that trade people would be killing him. Weird move for the Tigers.

I don’t follow either team much, but they got two quality players for a prospect.

Joe from Long Island – absolutely booed them. My understanding is that the fans are not too enamored of the team players right now. There was some kind of survey taken on whether the fans were on the side of Valentine or the players and according to EEI they resoundingly supported Valentine. I don’t know whether you remember this but when the Sux players complained about having to play a double header last season, to placate them Henry took the entire team out on his yacht and they were all give IPADs. I don’t think the players have any breathing room with the fans right now and it appears that they equate the players with the owners.

I’m watching the presser on Yes website now. I believe his speech in Japanese was mostly fir the benefit of the Japanese press. And it’s clear he has a lot of emotions swirling right now, so he is speaking from the heart in his mother tongue.

Thanks guys for your very thoughtful responses… I agree, he would probably have been a long man at best on the Yankees… We needed some outfield help since we lost Gardner and Swisher is hurt, and I guess Victorino wasn’t going to come cheaply as Blake said… I hope it all works out for the best.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  224. Chadwick Ommen August 11th, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  226. click to investigate August 11th, 2014 at 4:51 pm

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
