Ichiro will be active tonight
Havent seen a lineup and there is no 25-man move just yet, but a Yankees official just said that Ichiro Suzuki will be on the active roster tonight.
UPDATE: Dewayne Wise has been designated for assignment.
UPDATE: Mariners announce that Ichiro approached them about possibly being traded.

“Low risk, potentially high reward. ”
How many times have we heard that before on this site?
And, more importantly, how many times has the outcome turned out to be “high reward”?
So… if you’re a Mariners fan at the game tonight you…. do what exactly lol?
Cashman gonna get every inning possible for the Yankees $2 Mill.
When Ichiro woke up this AM I wonder if ever could have envisioned this one.
Traded to the greatest Franchise in Sports and playing against his former teammates immediately.
I kinda doubt it.
Ichiro’s in RF tonight for the Yanks?
That’s gonna be quite a shock for M fans coming to the game.
Low risk move. Nothing major. I expected this from Cashman.
From what I saw, Mitchell’s stuff was fringy. Don’t know much about the other guy, only that he has a track record of journeyman middle reliever. Yanks didn’t surrender anything of real value in this deal.
At least it looks like Ichiro’s defensive range is still good, which is a plus.
Compass Rosy-
Comment please ?
(After you get over the shock that is)
They gave up nothing for him and are only paying 2 mil of his salary. It’s not even a low risk move…it’s a no risk move.
It’s going to have to be weird for Ichiro, his very first game as a Yankee in his old park against his old team. He basically just walked across the infield.
Can’t expect much out of him tonight (this has got to be surreal playing his first game against the Mariners) but I really really like this move. I know Ichiro’s declined the past 2 years but he’s the type of bat that this team needs. More of a contact hitter with speed. They gave up next to nothing. I think Ichiro can hit over .300 the rest of the year with a change of sceneary.
fantastic move by Cashman.
can’t wait to see Ichiro in this lineup.
his defense and speed alone makes it a great trade. they needed to replace that when Gardner went down.
Japan will go nuts when they get the news.
Let’s get Matsui back to man the other corner.
Godzilla and Mothra at the corners.
away stats significantly better: .297 .314 .402 .716
home stats: 214 .255 .289 .544
bat him 2nd behind the Capt.
Holy crap ichiro???
If Mariners do anything but give Ichiro a standing ovation tonight they should move that team to Oklahoma City also…
I would think the logical move would be to move Ichiro to LF when Swisher is playing.
He’ll cover more ground at the Stadium.
I like the move…..its no risk and mayne Ichiro can turn back the clock in a playoff race…..if nothing else they got better defensively. Hope they still look to upgrade and then this winter either trade for Upton or Choo.
No matter what happens in the end this was a no-brainer.
And you know he’ll handle NY with ease and be fine to lay low. So pressure won’t be an issue. Also important to note, with having to play Ibanez and Jones so much in the OF with Swish hurt, you increase the chance one would be hurt and leave you short an OF with no minor leaguers to help
Blake-
I think you’ve just seen your upgrade.
jeter-ichiro-cano-alex-tex-grandy-ibanex/jones-victorino-martin
Safeco is hitter death….get him out of there and in games that matter and maybe he wajes up and finds his old form long enough to help.
instead of you can’t predict baseball, it should be you can’t predict cashman. what a coup!
swisher won’t see RF as he will be traded by the deadline
Its either Wise DFA or Swish to DL
I think Ichiro will be in LF when Swisher gets back. This also allows Ibanez/Jones to not have as much wear and tear running around out there. Ibanez has been pretty good out there but he gives me a heart attack with how slow he is
MTU,
Yea id say mkst likely
Ichiro can still utilize the short porch in right at YS, no problem.
Guy is going to turn back the clock, just watch.
astrocityfan July 23rd, 2012 at 6:34 pm
And they’re only paying him 2 mil?? What a deal!
And let’s not get hung up on uniform numbers please. We should have learned that lesson during the Hawkins debacle.
———
I’m not hung up on anything. I don’t care what number he wears.
But I also didn’t care what number Hawkins wore. Too many idiot fans did. That’s the point.

For this season.
We’ll see how it all works out, but how can you not love Ichiro as a replacement for Brett Gardner for the rest of this season???
Raul and Andruw, welcome back to the DH position, I think it’s missed you as much as you’ve missed it.
Yea Ichiro will play LF most likely when Swish gets back
Swisher to DL makes sense
Yanks need to figure out what other moves they’ll make or not make first
Great move at worst he is still as good as Gardner and at best closer to ichiro! Complete no brainer
Ichiro is a pro. He will fit in. No sweat.
Trade swish? Interesting….. Very interesting.
Nick in SF -
That is exactly how you have to see this deal. Ichiro as Gardner.
Abraham also said via Tweet: “Ichiro is not Ichiro any more. But he can probably be 85 percent of himself for 3 months. Nice trade by Cashman.”
=========
Peter Jinx.
Will Ichiro get number 51? He wore because of Bernie….
Get pick by Cash, Ichiro finally in a pennant race without the pressure of carrying a line-up.
I think this is a great move.
Kuroda will be there to smooth Ichiro’s transition.
What a way for 2 old Japanese studs to go out.
Makes your brain explode.
I just hope they got an MRI!

Mariners and Yankees are easily on the list of front offices that work like the KGB.
Wise got DFA’d…. he did a good job when called upon. Somebody is going to pick him up. He’s a useful player.

swisher won’t see RF as he will be traded by the deadline
———
How does that make any sense?
They were short an outfielder two hours ago and now they’ll deal Swisher within the next week with a full outfield?
Don’t bet on it.
I think Ichiro will have a decent run in NY. I like his away BA, but I hope he can find a way to get on base more. Maybe a move to a park that plays well for LH hitters with a better lineup around him will make a difference.
Ichiro hasn’t played a day in LF in his life and he’s an upgrade over Swish, guess again…
And if JU is still around we get him in the OS.
Or Stanton.
MTU -
Certainly don’t want to insult the newcomer.
I figured Wise would go; he didn’t see a lot of playing time. But he came through when called upon and was well-prepared. I guess he’ll catch on elsewhere?

85% of the old Ichiro would great…..Ill settle for 65% even that would be a good player.
Reminds me of the Fielder trade of 96. He had an impact but it wasnt with his power.

Swisher ain’t getting dealt. Or I should say it’s highly unlikely. Even if the Yanks wanted to — which I’m sure they’re not — the new compensation rules removes incentive to do those type of deals. Any team that trades for him cannot receive a draft pick when he walks.
VN-
I wish Wise well. He helped us when we needed him.

.297/.314/.402 line for Ichiro outside of Safeco.
this trade is awesome. i am trying not to make too big of a deal but it really beats the hell out of trading way too much for a rental in Victorino. the Yankees gamble on Ichiro and basically gave up nothing for it. awesome, awesome job by Cashman.
Real shame the Yankees won’t give an inner circle HoFer a players number. Just retire it if the absolute best case scenario for giving it out is still denied.

I doubt they are trading Swisher.
And the smart move would be to play Ichiro in LF since YS LF is much bigger than RF, and Ichiro is probably quite a bit faster than Swisher. The arm is much less important than the range.

LOL, very true!
After expressing no preference as to a uniform number, Ichiro was issued #51 by the Mariners. He was initially hesitant because it had previously been worn by pitching star Randy Johnson. To avoid insulting Johnson, Ichiro sent a personal message to the pitcher promising not to “bring shame” to the uniform.

what a great deal for the Yankees.
Ichiro has been playing in a virtual wasteland for the past few years, he will be pumped to play on a winner once again and is going to rake in Yankee Stadium in the middle of the lineup.
Bat him 2nd behind Jeter, move Grandy down in the order, and they will score runs in big bunches with both Jetes and Ichiro setting the table.

This whole myth was started with Hawkins. Someone decided that obviously fans hated him because he wore #21 and not because he was full of SUCK every time he set foot on the mound. Put #21, #55, or any other semi-untouchable number out there on a guy like Cano and watch fans boo him. Not happening. Yankee fans like one thing above all else: winning. Show them a winner, and they’ll show you the love. Fact.
He’ll mostly play LF
Is there a chance Suzuki won’t do well playin’ for the Yankees ?
Nah !
He gonna bat ninth
Wonder how it all shook out. The Yankees didn’t give up much. Only paying $2M. Is that the entire remainder?
MG – Having an ‘excuse’ (outside of logical, rational thought) to move Grandy down in the order is the best part about this move IMO.
GF-
He’s the fill for GGBG. Obviously he can play either corner though.

“I would strongly prefer that he not wear #51. However, I would never boo him if he did.”
————–
I don’t think fans should boo any player for the # they wear. If the Yankees want, they can retire the #.
Otherwise, it should be fair game.
Boo a player because they don’t play hard, not because they have a favorite # and god forbid want to wear it.

It was more than that. Yes, Hawkins didn’t perform and that’s the bottom line, which is why he didn’t even finish the season in pinstripes.

I agree. the only Yankee player I can remember booing was Neon Deion Sanders, and I do not regret it one bit.
“However, the fans acted as if they were personally insulted that #21 was distributed to someone who wasn’t worthy of the honor.”
That’s true. Honestly I don’t think he was worthy of the honor. But it doesn’t make what happened to him right. It wasn’t his fault, and he should have never been booed.
Cash probably told Jack Z. that he owes him one for the Montero/Pineda deal.
Sounds like the translator has a fear of speaking (reading) to a large audience.
I dunno, GF, I still think that was more propaganda than anything else. The writers love that stuff and perpetuate it with the help of an organization that likes to remind people of their deep rooted history. Does anyone think Ichiro remembered Bernie wore 51? Or was that just a tip from some in the org going “well it means a lot to the fans blah blah blah” and then the writers say how it means a lot to the fans (when repeating Ichiro’s thoughts on it) and then the fans go, ‘OMG that’s right!! He can’t wear Bernie’s number!’ after not giving Bernie Williams a second thought in 5 years.
It’s silly. But the org doesn’t help itself.. part of the ‘aura’ and all that nonsense.
This is a really nice trade, and totally unpredictable, per usual Cashman.
Ichiro has hit better on the road, can handle the spotlight, and he’ll have a little extra motivation now playing on a first place team. He’s also a 4th OF, replacing Wise.
I really think if the Yanks had any hope of NOT retiring #51 they just missed it. Giving it to a HOFer like Ichiro would be a safe bet. This isn’t like someone taking the Babe’s number.
FYI, Hawkins was booed the first time or two he pitched for us. So no, you can’t say it was because of performance. Before he even sucked, he was booed. I remember it was like his first appearance for us and he got booed before he even threw his first pitch. Just saying.

What’s up, comet!! Can’t wait for later… man, I should probably get some sh!t done before the game instead of sitting here talking to you folks!!!
I do wonder if they’ll move Felix…. At this point, you gotta wonder why not.
Greetings Comet-
Your advanced scouting from across the border has netted us Ichiro.
I congratulate you.
New Ichiro thread —–>
Did Ichiro get a lot of rest with the M’s, Compass? I’m hoping we can give him more than he’s used to and that could help his overall performance.
Gotta think that the vets in the league would be happy for Ichiro. .

Rosy-
Better pay attention to Ichiro in the stripes.
We’ll see if his time is passed, as you say.
I kinda doubt it.
~
I meant his time is passed on the M’s … which is the only team I care about
I wish Ichiro well, in whatever the future holds for him.
Some of my specific memories are a grand Slam vs. the Red Sox, a walk-off homer vs. Mariano and, one of the most special – I was there with my dad the night he passed George Sissler…
didn’t ichiro take #51 in honor of Bernie?
thought i read that..
8th? Why not second?

I dunno, GF, I still think that was more propaganda than anything else. The writers love that stuff and perpetuate it with the help of an organization that likes to remind people of their deep rooted history.

It was certainly a media-driven story but I do seem to recall that Hawkins did eventually change his number because of the fan reaction and not wanting to be a distraction.
That would suggest it was more than just a myth. That doesn’t make it any less stupid, though. He didn’t deserve that kind of abuse.
#’s are taken very seriously in NY…when was your last game at YS GF?
