Yankees trade for Ichiro
UPDATE: The Mariners have announced the deal. It’s exactly as Curry originally reported with Mitchell and Farquhar set to report to Triple-A.
I’m in a cab and cant post a link, but Jack Curry is reporting on twitter that the Yankees have traded for Ichiro Suzuki.
He reports that RHPs DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar are going to Seattle. Yankees also get cash.

Pros: Ichiro will be the 1st or 2nd best fielder on the team depending on how much you value throwing. Offers base stealing and aggressive hitting.
Cons: Seems kind of done offensively, no power.
Bonus Pros: Is Japanese and a cool guy
Bonus Cons: Fills up the OF which kind of precludes getting a deal done that helps the Yankees past this year.
Ichiro is something. It’s along the band-aid type deal I was expecting but a step above of a Austin Kearns move.
Ichiro’s numbers are horrible right now, but you hope being a Yankee wakes him up.
I like this move. It’s something rather than sitting back and saying, “if it ain’t broke”…
Who’s Danny Fahrquar?
Someone please write a thousand-word essay on this guy. Now.
Is anyone else stunned Cashman still calls Jack Z for trades?
Wow!
i think there’s a good chance for an ichiro revival playing for the yankees and having a real chance to win a WS.
G. Love I agree with the sentiment, and Ichiro is a guy I said before that could wake up when there are actual stakes he is playing for. He is a weird guy, with a strong competitive spirit, that definitely has another gear he can kick it into.
Please hit .330 until the end of the playoffs, Ichiro.
I just hope this isn’t the only move.
ichiro has been on a losing team for a long time
a chance to win a title and go out a champ might really light a fire in his belly
let’s hope he gets hot and plays great d
will he play left?
This might make some of us feel a lot better, let’s pretend we traded Montero, Noesi, DJ Mitchell & Farquar for Ichiro, Pineda and Campos.
And then pretend Ichiro was out for the first 1/2 of the season with an ingrown toenail and we’re just getting him back.
We good, lol?
Ichiro’s numbers are horrible right now, but you hope being a Yankee wakes him up.
——————————————————————————————
At least Yanks didn’t stand pat. He’s great on defense and may see better pitches in this line-up.
I mentioned this a few days ago but I just have a feeling Ichiro might find a second wind playing in games that matter…..maybe not but for what they gave I think its worthwhile to see……I doubt they could have gotten Victorino that cheap.
Watch Ichiro become an all or nothing pull hitter on the Yankees going for the RF porch, lol.
What’s Ichiro’s BA with RISP?
My preference by Far was Upton. Yanks Still have a hole in RF when Swish is gone in 2013. This deal shows the importance of long term committed $$$, when deals are being considered.

———————–
Probably still trying to get King Felix *rolls eyes*
Where do they hit Ichiro?
Trading for Ichiro is basically like trading for Kearns.
Maybe he’ll wake up in NY. Doesn’t look too promising but hey, you never know.
Tonight’s game suddenly became a must-watch.
What a surreal sight it’s going to be for M’s fans.
I love the move. Not afraid that they regret giving up on Mitchell.
I would rather have had Victorino BUT he would’ve cost a lot more.
MLB Network says Ichiro will be wearing #51. That I don’t like.
Technically they could still get Upton and move Swisher to DH……or just not play Ichiro
Interesting. whose spot does he take?
G. Love -
That post made me laugh out loud. There’s the spirit!!
Seriously. Another move from where????
And, gee, what timing….
What a waste. Old, washed up, zero as far as HR and RBI’s. Junk that makes a truck load of money. Ibanez and Jones are a better combo than this old man.
Where does Ichiro bat in this line-up? Where is he batting with the M’s? I like this trade
I’m curious to know how much of Ichiro’s remaining salary Jerk Z had to eat ?
In getting Mitchell I would think it would be substantial.
G. Love – I was referring to the 6:11 post, regarding the details of the trade.
And, if Ichiro does what you suggest in your latter post, I just about give up on the Yankees ever having a hitter who doesn’t fall in love with the short porch.
G. Love July 23rd, 2012 at 6:12 pm

——————————————————————————————————————-
I’ll take it.
Has to be better than his 4 hr/28 rbi/.288 obp/.642 ops,in 402 ab.
Ugly.
Basically, ichiro takes gardners spot, rests the old guys more.
Not a huge deal here, outside of the name, and maybe he gets motivated, but at 38,i doubt it.
I bet Ichiro asked to be traded to thr Yankees.

Where do they hit Ichiro?
————————————
I would say 7th.
been nice to know you nick swisher, be sure to stop by a couple of times next year with your new employer…
Turn back the clock Suzuki!
Nice of Buster not to say he broke the news first over Curry this time.
He bats ninth?
If Curry’s report is accurate, I certainly can’t say I saw this one coming. I also can’t say I like this move.
Here’s hoping Ichiro gets a second wind with a team built to win.
May not play in this series against his old team.
Unknown -
Trading DJ Mitchell does not mean they “gave up” on him. It means they probably didn’t see a spot where he’d fit and so he was moveable.
Good for DJ.
cashman strikes again. kinda like with justice
Y’s-
Ichiro is a rental isn’t he ? Why would that impact Swisher.
He’s also 38 yrs. old.
Giuseppe Franco -
I’m more in shock than anything else. I’m not an Ichiro fan. But it is a move. And it sure as heck came out of nowhere, it seems. And it didn’t cost a boatload. And who knows? Ichiro could prove really valuable on the Yankees. Isn’t he the exact type of hitter everyone has been clamoring for?
VN-
“Isn’t he the exact type of hitter everyone has been clamoring for?
”
The old version sure was.
Gotta wonder if Ichiro will want/get #51.
We don’t need another stupid backlash from the fans ala Hawkins.
MTU -
Well, let’s hope for a rejuvenation.
what number will he wear? they can’t give him 51, that’s bernie baseball
I like this trade. I called for this before. Will he lead off?
Ichiro is a HoFer and Bernie is a nice guy, he can wear 51.
Kuroda told them to go get Ichiro before tonight’s start.
Magrane (sp?) suggests that Ichiro take the Brett Gardner spot and bat 9th. Don’t know about that.
VN-
He needs to eat lot’s of Kobe beef and Goji berries.
He’s a contact hitter who can get a runner in from 3rd with 1 out.
This is a good move. I have no doubt that putting on the pinstripes will make him hit over .300 the rest of the way.
I’m totally serious. I think Ichiro is going to come here & rake. He hit .315 last year. He’s not done. He’s just playing in baseball’s wasteland.
I’m excited over this move. He’s a great fill in for Gardner that cost little.
This is a cheap\$$$ move, to acquire a guy you Hope gets hot for 3 months. Also makes me wonder how long Swish is gonna be out.
Trading DJ Mitchell does not mean they “gave up” on him. It means they probably didn’t see a spot where he’d fit and so he was moveable.
Purely Semantics.
———-
It is being reported by MLB Network that Ichiro will be wearing #51.
F YEAH
He hit .315 last year.
–
2010. He hit .272 last year. Now .260
You have got to be kidding me – never saw this coming. I popper over here to complain about the fact that Dave Cameron at Fangraphs has Austin Jackson on his top 50 trade value players, only to see the Ichiro news.
In case you are interested, here is what Cameron says about A-Jax – who is about to pass Granderson in terms of value on the field…
33. (NR) Austin Jackson, OF, Detroit Tigers – Under Team Control Through 2015.
Jackson has enjoyed a breakout 2012 season, already matching his career high in home runs and seeing his walk rate spike as well. The addition of power and patience to a player with good speed have made him an all around performer and one of the best center fielders in the game this season. His track record suggests that the power might be in for a decline, but he’s posted an ISO over .200 in each of the first four months with no discernable drop-off, so there’s a case to be made that the new Jackson is simply a large improvement over the old one. His surge is well-timed, as he’ll be heading to arbitration for the first time this winter, and is probably in line for a lucrative extension if the Tigers decide to buy out his arbitration years. Even with a payday coming, however, Jackson’s performance and athleticism make him a guy that teams would be lining up to bid for.

Source: #Yankees get significant cash from #Mariners in Ichiro trade.
Cant say anything bad about it, Yankees gave up almost nothing
Don’t bust on Ichiro if he doesn’t hit much right away.
I’m told that SafeCo Fields depresses offensive numbers.
Would this move make the Yankees officially the oldest team in the majors?
Dempster is still in a Cubs uniform playing catch in the outfield right now. I guess he doesn’t read Twitter, LOL
Ichiro move is AWESOME!!
can ichiro call bernie and ask his ok to wear #51?
“Yankees get significant cash from #Mariners in Ichiro trade.”
I expected that. At least half the remaining if not more.
Mitchell saw to that.
have seen ichiro play a bit over the years against oakland. last year, he seems a lot less intense on the field. losing does that
winning team, ichiro hits .320. mark it down
Will he play left f? Will he wear bernie’s #? Where will he bat? Will he play tonight? How does joe g feel about it?
Ichiro is old, but this is a no brainer for the Yankees. And he is a line drive hitter with + speed and a cannon for an arm in RF. Now the question is does he leadoff?
What would it take to get Ramon Santiago, Don Kelly, and Brandon Inge?
Jerkface,
.315 was 2 seasons ago. My bad.
?@Joelsherman1
I have learned that the #Yankees will pay just more than $2M of what is left on Ichiro’s salary
Who are the Yanks gonna cut from the 25 Man? Wise?
Ichiro
Jeter
Cano
Arod
Grandy
Tex
Ibanez
Swisher
Martin
Pretty sick.

Yes, although in a perfect world, I would have liked this deal a lot more about 10 years ago.
Shock seems to cover my sentiment as well.
I’m not one of those fans who believes Cashman making a deal is a good thing for the sake of making a deal. It has to make sense, too.
This deal reminds me of the old days with George making a big headline move during a bad stretch.
Of course, I hope it works out but I’m not exactly doing cartwheels right now.
A good mob that could end up being great. I mean realistically ichiro can hit as well as Gardner plus he has a better arm. This has possibilities
Ichiro
Jeter
Cano
Arod
Grandy
Tex
Ibanez
Swisher
Martin

==========
Yeah… right. To me, looks like just a bunch of old guys on paper.
I bet the A’s could (easily) sweep this lineup again.
The MLB TV crew didn’t see this trade coming, but I think Blake and others thought it might be a possibility. Bat him 9th or 2nd. Play RF or LF?
Farquhar was a recent callup to AAA. Pitched 2 shutout innings, no hits Saturday night vs AAA Braves.
Will he be inserted in the lineup tonight?
Giuseppe Franco -
I get how you feel about the headline move, but I disagree here. I have no idea how it will work out, but I think more than anything, Cashman was either going to stand pat or make a low-cost move that could prove helpful.
This move may or may not help, but I don’t think it will hurt.
But I do wonder who is gonna be gone.
I always worry about chemistry.
Ichiro has speed, can catch the ball and with RISP he’ll make contact and drive them in. It won’t be home run or bust with him.
Jerkface July 23rd, 2012 at 6:23 pm
Ichiro is a HoFer and Bernie is a nice guy, he can wear 51.
———
Absolutely, Ichiro is a HoF and should get that number if he wants it.
But Yankee fans don’t always use common sense. Everything will be hunky dory if he produces but it could get stupid if he doesn’t.
Seems like a decent low risk move.
Farquhar was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on June 26 after being DFA’d by the A’s. Mitchell has no future in NY, so really little cost. Let’s see what Ichiro has left.
And they’re only paying him 2 mil?? What a deal!
And let’s not get hung up on uniform numbers please. We should have learned that lesson during the Hawkins debacle.
I’m surprised, because I’m not sure this adds much beyond Dwayne wise.
Having said that, the price was right. Taking that into account, this qualifies as low, low risk, and potentially high reward. When he plays, he bats 1,2 or 9,
Gotta go for dinner. Maybe this will put a charge into the offense, with some fresh “old” legs.
His speed on the bases will help Immediately. I still wonder as to who goes from the 25 Man, and how long Swish is gonna be out.
Unfortunately Ichiro fits right in, hitting .175 with RISP this year
But I do hope being on the Yankees “stokes the competitive fire within him” or whatever he said about facing Matsuzaka.
I’ll take an old Ichiro over needing to play Wise or Nix in the OF. Plus Swisher is hurt at the moment. He still has more speed than everyone currently in this lineup. He has the best arm in the OF. And in Yankees stadium with short porch should have some pop plus a line drive stroke. Yeah lineup really stinks by adding him. And I am not even a fan as he isn’t a patient hitter and doesn’t walk. But he will be far more dangerous in this lineup than on a no-offense like Mariners.
Team doesn’t even get near younger…………old, old, older. LOL !
. I still wonder as to who goes from the 25 Man, and how long Swish is gonna be out.
–
Dewayne Wise easily. Unless Swish goes on the DL.
it’s a no brainer. ichiro, even though he’s old, has more upside than the guy he replaces. it’s not a ton of money. david justice or pudge rodriguez. solid contributor or league average filler
Who gives a crap about age on this? Hysterical. He’s a free agent at years end. What exactly did people think we would get for Dj Mitchel, 2 mill and a thrown in? Justin Upton. That’s what’s laughable. This is a nice move without a doubt.
Tigers made a great move. Rosenthal says marlins will keep selling. Let’s get Stanton !
I would bat him 9th, and see how it goes. Do not want to try too much too fast. The Yankee batting order has worked well over the course of this season.
Who will be deleted from the 25 man to make room for him?
Its about time the Yankees got something from the Mariners.
Doesn’t Ichiro have to pass a physical and go through other certain prerequisites before he can play for the Yankees.
I don’t think he will be available until tomorrow. And who gets the boot off the 25 man
I suppose Wise packs his bags.
“Low risk, potentially high reward. ”
How many times have we heard that before on this site?
And, more importantly, how many times has the outcome turned out to be “high reward”?
For 2 mil it’s worth a flyer.
But Bernue is a HOF too
At least he should be
This is the type of in-season move you see from the Yankees. Bigger deals are usually in the off-season.
IMO Ichiro hits 9th in the lineup. The question for me is where does he play in the OF. Do the Yanks move him or Swish to LF? Ichiro probably covers more ground but has a better arm than Swisher.
Taking everything into consideration, I like the move. But I dont expect him to be the “old” Ichiro, I expect him closer to the old Ichiro maybe a slight improvement.
FYI – Ichiro’s OPS for July is .508. he needs to find some life.
However, on the bright side, his slash away from home is .297 .314 .402 (and we know that that is always an issue in Seattle). He also has a decent platoon split if they want to use him that way down the road when Swish is back.
sorry – haven’t read through the thread so, these might be repeats….
some tweets from Larry Stone…
Larry Stone ?@StoneLarry
Ichiro’s agent Tony Attanassio told me that Ichiro let Mariners know “months ago” that he was willing to be traded.
Larry Stone ?@StoneLarry
Ichiro’s agent, Tony Attanasio: ““He knows that the club has to grow. He knows that the younger players need more playing time…(more)”
It’s going to have to be weird for Ichiro, his very first game as a Yankee in his old park against his old team. He basically just walked across the infield.
Ichiro is a RF with a cannon. After seeing what Reddick’s arm can do in RF, that’s where he is playing. Keeping doubles to singles. Swisher has vastly improved on defense, but you switch him to left.
The difference in this in comparison to other years, this is a luxury addition to this team more than addressing an absolute need. It is a very inexpensive way to replace Gardner’s speed and some defense, plus a guy motivated to win a championship and a career .300 hitter.
I’m really curious to hear how Sterling handles his home run call!
Basically at worst ichiro is Brett Gardner and at best he is closer to ichiro.
Now if we can just fleece the marlins….
My question is – is Swisher more hurt than we thought?
I just woke up to this news. Ichiro will best the same pest, only in the the AL East. Love the deal.
No way they hit Ichiro 9th.
I’d lead him off, followed by Jeter, Cano, ARod, Grandy Tex and Swish against ALL pitching.
I imagine he’ll be really energized to have a chance to win. Bet a buck he hits over .300 the rest of the way.
Gee I hope Hal doesn’t find out that he just spent a lot of money to try and improve the team. He would NEVER agree to something like that.
Ichiro will have to shave his crusty facial growth………..hope they don’t dishonor Bernie and let him wear # 51.
Give # 99 meaning he’s outta here after this year………………………
Ichiro is worth a shot. It could get problematic if he doesn’t hit and play enough to suit him. I never saw much in Mitchell. Good movement on his fastball but nothing else. Here’s hoping. I am glad they are trying.
i like the move, however he hit in the 8th spot last night while granderson continued his quest as a strike out leader, ichiro is much better in the number two slot.he has speed and can put the bat on the ball and move runners, granderson would be better hitting 6th
